The story so far has been more about fireworks than finesse.

In Lucknow, Shreyas Iyer’s maiden T20I hundred powered India to victory in 14.4 overs. Ranchi brought a jolt, as Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford ended the host’s run of 10 straight wins in completed T20Is. Indore swung it back, with Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh engineering a 14-run triumph.

Now the series moves to the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday (October 14, 2026), which has long been kind to T20 batters. In India’s last outing in Hyderabad, against Bangladesh in October 2024, it ended three runs short of 300. It is also home to Sunrisers Hyderabad, the IPL’s most trigger-happy side.

The host will lean on a top-order that has taken turns to blaze away. While the West Indies has struggled to contain the firepower, it has been far from a pushover. That said, it will need a more complete performance to unsettle the reigning world champion and keep the series alive.

Only one match out of six on this tour has been won while defending a total, when India did so in Indore, where dew stayed away and made a difference for the Indian bowlers. It could be the same case in Hyderabad too, which has seen average temperatures vary between 31-34 °C the last few days.

Bowling is India’s big question, especially in the absence of pace ace Jasprit Bumrah. It couldn’t defend 249 in Ranchi and head coach Gautam Gambhir flagged concerns over white-ball pitches after the run-fest.

The surface in Hyderabad adds another twist to the contest. Its top layer has been re-laid (with an 80-20 black-red soil mix), and how differently it will play, if at all, remains to be seen.

Either way, bowlers will be tested in a format where, to borrow from Keemo Paul, they either get to execute their plans or get executed.

Arshdeep’s three wickets carried India home in Indore, Naman Dhir, too, proved clinical, providing the side with another useful bowling option. For the visitor, Roston Chase leads the bowling charts and will relish another crack at Abhishek, whom he has dismissed twice in 13 balls this series.

A series win is within touching distance for India but the Windies have the nerve to make the host sweat. Between them lies a strip of freshly laid earth and 40 overs that will remember who blinked first.

Match starts at 7 p.m.

Secretary Jeevan breathing new life into Hyderabad cricket https://artifex.news/article71492254-ece/ Mon, 21 Sep 2026 15:05:00 +0000 https://artifex.news/article71492254-ece/ Read More “Secretary Jeevan breathing new life into Hyderabad cricket” »

Changemaker: Jeevan wants cricket to do the talking, not association politics.

Cricket administrators in Hyderabad have long made more headlines for infighting and allegations of financial impropriety than for cricket. Now the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) is trying to change that, and at the centre of that push is M. Jeevan Reddy, who took charge as HCA’s secretary in March.

Two key appointments followed: Ambati Rayudu leading the Cricket Operations Committee and Wasim Jaffer as mentor to every team under its umbrella, both coming on board only after being guaranteed an interference-free environment.

The inaugural edition of TG20 followed, a small but important new feather in a dusty, worn-out cap.

“Anybody in Hyderabad has the opportunity to engage with the best sporting infrastructure. But how about rural Telangana? They don’t have basic facilities, like grounds or nets to practice, or coaches. I wanted to focus on rural cricketing activity when I came in,” Jeevan told The Hindu.

Jeevan has not been shy in seeking help when required. For instance, he roped in people associated with the Tamil Nadu Premier League for the smooth functioning of TG20. This helped more than 150 players get a grand stage to showcase their talent, with some even snapping up trial opportunities with IPL teams.

Jeevan said the Gymkhana Ground is undergoing major changes ahead of the upcoming domestic season.

While international cricket returns to the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium after two long years next month, the bigger talking point has been the recent announcement by the State government of a world-class cricket stadium spread across a 100-acre site in Future City.

“We are working towards having a capacity of around 80 to 90 thousand. It’ll also have an academy attached, along with a hotel, a recreational area and three or four practice grounds.

“When you look at where the existing stadium is located, it is not possible to expand it. We are limited by safety challenges. The road approaching the stadium is very narrow, and it is between residential areas. So holding any event there creates a lot of challenges for the residents.”

An interest in being part of an expanding Women’s Premier League canopy is another reason he cited for wanting a new venue.

“In the next two years, there could be three more teams coming in, and then hopefully the matches will also come to Hyderabad. If everything goes according to plan, somebody from Hyderabad itself could own a team,” he explained, stopping short of revealing much more.

On the domestic front, the Gymkhana Ground, a regular Ranji Trophy host in the city, is undergoing major changes ahead of the upcoming season.

“Most pitches are flat these days. There is not a lot of swing now. So we wanted to create an environment where both batters and bowlers can do well and have surfaces that give momentum to the bowlers too.”

At 25, Abhishek Sharma is already in his eighth season at Sunrisers Hyderabad. Having been traded to the franchise after just one season with Delhi Capitals in 2018, the southpaw from Punjab has acquired an imposing aura in orange, garnering the unconditional affection of a quintessentially easy-going Hyderabadi crowd with his daring stroke-play.

On Tuesday night (April 21, 2026), Abhishek’s stature at Sunrisers rose further as his second IPL hundred helped the side hammer his former franchise by 47 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
