Following his side’s playoff qualification in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after beating Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Rajat Patidar lauded star batter Virat Kohli for bringing energy on the field that helped everyone step up their game and in maintaining a great atmosphere in the team. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) completed their fairytale comeback in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season, securing the playoff spot with a 27-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Bengaluru on Saturday.

Following his side’s win, Patidar said, “Virat Kohli bhaiya’s energy infectious on the field. Whether we are behind or ahead in the match, his energy always lifts the whole team. His energy on the field, gives us the motivation and confidence to play better.”

RCB’s road to playoffs was not easy. They had lost seven of their first eight games. Sitting at the bottom of the points table, they were written off from the playoffs race. But sheer belief and fearless gameplay in remaining games helped them secure six successive wins. Also other team’s results went in their way and made their journey to top four easy.

On RCB’s belief that they could overcome a poor start to the season, Patidar said, “We believed that we could change the points table. It has happened before and RCB have done it in the past. We had examples and experienced players around us, so it was a great environment. Everyone believed we could change this.”

On his performance and the support from the senior RCB players, Patidar said – “My role was clear and all I wanted to do was execute it correctly. Our team has many experienced players, such as DK (Dinesh Karthik), Virat, Faf (Du Plessis), and (Cameron) Green. The things I have gotten a chance to learn from them have helped me a lot.”

In 14 matches and 12 innings this season, Patidar has scored 361 runs at an average of 30.08 and a strike rate of 179.60, with five half-centuries. His best score is 55. His run of form in the second half of the season, quickfire half-centuries and assault on spin-bowling proved to be instrumental in RCB’s qualification on the basis of net-run-rate.

Coming to the match, CSK won the toss and opted to bat first. RCB put on a fine score of 218/5 on the board, with skipper Faf Du Plessis (54 in 39 balls, with three fours and three sixes), Virat Kohli (47 in 29 balls, with three fours and four sixes) put on a 78-run partnership, setting a fine platform for Rajat Patidar (41 in 23 balls, with two fours and four sixes) and Cameron Green (38* in 17 balls, with three fours and three sixes) to put on a 71-run stand for the third wicket.

Cameos from Dinesh Karthik (14 in six balls, with a four and six) and Glenn Maxwell (16 in five balls, with two fours and a six) took RCB to a 200-run plus total.

RCB needed to restrict CSK below 201 runs to qualify for the playoffs and surpass their net-run-rate.

In the run-chase of 219 runs and task of scoring 201 runs atleast to book the top four spot, CSK lost two wickets early and were reduced to 19/2. Rachin Ravindra (61 in 37 balls, with five fours and three sixes) and Ajinkya Rahane (33 in 22 balls, with three fours and a six) put up a 66-run stand to bring the side into the game.

RCB sunk CSK to 129/6, but a partnership between Ravindra Jadeja (42* in 22 balls, with three fours and three sixes) and MS Dhoni (25* in 13 balls, with three fours and a six) threatened to take the match away from RCB. However, Yash Dayal defended 11 runs in the final over, restricting CSK to just 191/7 in 20 overs.

RCB is in fourth place with seven wins and seven losses, with 14 points. CSK is in the fifth spot with seven wins and seven losses, but they have slid down to fifth due to a lower net-run rate.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) face a date with destiny when they take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday, with the contest being dubbed as a virtual knockout in the race for the IPL 2024 playoffs. One of the four teams yet to win the IPL, RCB seemed down and out after losing seven of their first eighth league matches. However, with five wins on the trot, RCB could possibly make it to the playoffs with if they beat CSK in Bengaluru on Saturday, depending on their Net Run Rate.

Middle-order batter Rajat Patidar, who has been one of the catalysts in RCB’s ‘rise from the ashes’ journey, has credited the franchise’s impressive revival in the tournament to the team’s renewed mantra of ‘playing for pride.’

“To get support from the franchise and the team management allows the players to do their best on the field. The environment was good in the team even when things were not going our away. I think that plays a huge role in building the character of the team. I think that of course it’s a big franchise and playing for pride that was turn around. We have done earlier also in 2016. So I think we have an example in our own team pricing there,” Patidar said in a media interaction on Tuesday.

Patidar has scored 320 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 179.8 smashing five fifties in his last seven outings. He is RCB’s third-highest run-scorer only behind icon Virat Kohli (661) and captain Faf du Plessis (367).

Sharing his views on Kohli, Patidar added: “He (Kohli) always keeps the team first, which is a good thing to learn for every player,” said Patidar, as quoted by India Today.

RCB IPL 2024 Playoffs Scenario

For RCB to qualify, they have to beat Chennai Super Kings to reach 14 points. They would then hope that their NRR is above the other sides vying for the fourth spot in the playoffs. They would also hope SRH to lose both their remaining games or LSG don’t win their last match by a big margin.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru continued their resurgence in the IPL 2024 with their fifth consecutive victory in this year’s competition as the Faf Du Plessis-led side defeated Delhi Capitals by 47 runs on Sunday. The victory was extremely important for RCB as they remain in contention for the playoff spots – something that was highly unlikely after their dismal start. Virat Kohli‘s wife – Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma – was in attendance during the match and her reaction to the victory truly showed how much it meant for the side and their fans. He jumped up in excitement as RCB claimed the final wicket of the match and folded her hands to pray as the crowd erupted at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Coming to the match, Rajat Patidar scored a brilliant half-century before Yash Dayal and Lockie Ferguson bundled out DC for just 140 to guide RCB to a crucial victory. Thanks to the win, RCB can now qualify for the playoffs with a big win over Chennai Super Kings considering other results also go their way.

“Brilliant, we put some good performances and really pleased. 1st half of the season, things didn’t quite come together and from that batting perspective and bowling perspective we have been able to put it together now. Sometimes people talk about match-ups and all, but as a left hander with the ball spinning in, you hope that works out sometimes and he’s (Swapnil) done brilliantly for us. Lot of work has gone behind the scenes, and we are getting it right and I feel there is a lot more variety in our bowling now and Yash and Lockie have been exceptional the last few games. We wanna play a style of cricket, to be bold and put some performances together and keep going,” Faf said after the match.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru kept their playoff dreams intact through Rajat Patidar’s blazing fifty and a strong-willed effort from the bowlers, who set up the hosts’ 47-run victory over Delhi Capitals in the IPL on Sunday. The target of 188 was not insurmountable, but the Capitals’ chase descended into disarray once they lost four wickets inside 3.3 overs upfront, eventually finishing at 140, with Axar Patel 57 (39b, 5×4, 3×6) playing a lone hand. RCB now have 12 points from 13 matches – same as the Capitals – and need a win against Chennai Super Kings in the last league match here on May 18 to push their case for a playoff berth.

The Capitals also need a win in their final league game against Lucknow Super Giants on May 14 to stay in the hunt.

Cutting back to the match, Impact Player David Warner, who missed the action for close to a month due to a wrist injury, slog-swept left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh into the waiting hands of Will Jacks at deep.

The dismissal flagged off Capitals’ train of disaster. Left-arm pacer Yash Dayal (3/20) consumed Abhishek Porel, caught at covers by Lockie Ferguson, in the first ball of the third over.

Delhi suffered a body blow in the very next ball. The in-form Jack-Fraser McGurk, who smashed Mohammed Siraj for two fours and a six in the second over, backed up too far as Shai Hope’s straight drive rattled the stumps after taking a deflection of Dayal’s outstretched left-hand.

Siraj trapped Kumar Kushagra, who came in for the suspended Rishabh Pant, plumb in front with a nip-backer as DC slumped to 30 for four.

Axar and Hope (29, 23b) added 56 runs for the fifth wicket off 36 balls but the partnership offered only temporary relief than any real hope to the visitors.

Axar, who took over the reins of DC in the absence of Pant, played a handy innings, but it just delayed the inevitable.

The rest of the DC batters were bogged down by a confused mind, best exemplified by the run out of Tristan Stubbs.

Stubbs sprinted out of the non-striker’s crease as if chased by a lion after Axar defended a length ball from Cameron Green, who quickly grabbed the ball and completed the simple task of hitting the stumps.

Earlier, RCB could not exploit Patidar’s quick fifty to the optimum, settling for an underwhelming 187 for nine.

Patidar (52, 32b, 3×4, 3×6) and Jacks (41, 29b, 3×4, 2×6) added 88 runs off 53 balls for the third-wicket as RCB overcame the early departures of skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli.

Du Plessis’ slice off pacer Mukesh Kumar was gobbled up by McGurk near third man.

Kohli gave signals of another T20 masterclass while creaming 27 off 13 balls, including two sixes off Ishant Sharma and one off Khaleel Ahmed (2/31).

But a waft outside the off-stump with little foot movement resulted in a catch to stumper Abhishek Porel.

RCB, however, found Patidar in full flow. His first scoring shot was a magnificent cover driven four off Mukesh and he never let that early momentum fade.

The elegance soon gave way for brute force as Patidar brought forth his six-hitting abilities, smashing Axar for two sixes and sending Kuldeep Yadav over long-on for a maximum.

The DC fielders too helped Patidar copiously. Hope dropped the right-hander on 42 off Kuldeep and five runs later Axar grassed him off pacer Rasikh Salam.

At the other end, Jacks, who was given a reprieve on 19 by Axar off Kuldeep, displayed his untrammelled power and the left-arm wrist spinner was at the receiving end, watching the ball sailing over long-on twice.

Just as the alliance was blossoming, DC managed to latch on to a catch.

Axar atoned for his previous failures as he made a fine tumbling catch off Salam to terminate the stay of Patidar.

Jacks soon followed his partner as a weak slap off Kuldeep ended in the hands of Axar at the edge of the ring.

The dismissals of two set batters affected the run-scoring rate of RCB. From 137 for four in 14.4 overs they could only add 50 runs in the remaining overs.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has criticised Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) icon Virat Kohli for his knock in their IPL 2024 match against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Thursday. Kohli, who raced to 32 off his first 18 balls, had to slow his innings down after the quick dismissals for skipper Faf du Plessis and Will Jacks, respectively. After that, he only managed 19 off his next 25 balls, before perishing to Jaydev Unadkat. He ended up with a strike rate of 118.6.

On the contrary, Rajat Patidar smashed 50 runs off just 20 balls, including four sixes in one over off Mayank Markande.

Kohli’s dip in strike-rate, however, left Gavaskar fuming on-air. The legendary batter suggested that Kohli should’ve taken more risk as RCB had a few decent batters to come after him.

“It’s just been singles, singles and singles from Kohli. There is [Dinesh] Karthik to come; there is [Mahipal] Lomror to come. You’ve got to try and take a few risks now. Look at Patidar. He had already hit three sixes in that over. If he had wanted, he could have taken a single or left the ball for a wide. But no, he went for it because the opportunity was there,” Gavaskar said on commentary.

Explaining the reason behind Kohli’s dip in strike-rate, Gavaskar said that the batter went into a shell after one point and couldn’t get out of it despite his best attempts.

“That’s the approach RCB now need. Yes, Kohli has played and missed; it’s not easy, because when you’ve been in your shell, you’ve just been working the ones, and suddenly connecting is not going to be easy. But that is what Kohli needs to do; needs to attempt. He has got to attempt the big shots no,” he added.

“In the middle, he just seemed to have lost touch. I am not sure of the exact numbers, but I think from 31-32 to the time he got out, he did not hit a boundary. So at the end of the day, when he got out when you are facing the strike in the first ball of the innings and you get out in the 14th or the 15th over, you have got strike rate of 118, that’s not what your team expects from you.”

Rajat Patidar’s explosive fifty and a collective effort from the spinners set up Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s 35-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 game on Thursday, bringing an end to their six-match losing streak. Patidar’s 50 off 20 balls stood in stark contrast to Virat Kohli’s measured 51 off 43 balls as RCB put up 206 for seven after opting to bat. For a team that has breached the 250-run mark thrice season, the target was very gettable but the in-form SRH batting line-up could not deliver on this occasion and ended at 171 for eight in 20 overs.

It was a much-needed result for RCB, who lost seven of their first eight games. The loss was SRH’s third in eight matches.

Considering the effectiveness of the spinners in the first innings, RCB opened the bowling with part-time off-spinner Will Jacks. The English man had the destructive Travis Head (1 off 3) caught at third man to give RCB a massive boost.

Head’s opening partner Abhishek Sharma (31 off 13) did entertain the home crowd until his attempted slog ended up in the hands of wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik.

Left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh, making his RCB debut, struck twice in his first over removing the dangerous South Africa duo of Aiden Markram and Henrich Klaasen. While Markram missed a full toss to be adjudged lbw, Klaasen was caught at mid-on after mistiming a lofted drive, leaving SRH at 56 for four in five overs.

Leggie Karn Sharma then dismissed Nitish Reddy and Abdul Samad to shut the door on the opposition.

Earlier, Patidar did the bulk of the work in his 65-run stand with Kohli who was focused on giving the strike to his partner, an approach which was questioned by Sunil Gavaskar on air.

Cameron Green (37 not out off 20) and Swapnil Singh (12 off 6) came up with timely strikes in the death overs to take RCB past 200.

RCB were all guns blazing in the first three overs with Kohli and Faf du Plessis (25 off 12) going hard at the SRH bowlers, including opposition skipper Pat Cummins who conceded 19 runs in his first over.

However, from 43 for no loss of the first 18 balls, RCB could only reach 61 for 1 by the end of the powerplay.

Du Plessis was deceived by a slow short ball from T Natarajan to be caught by Aiden Markram at mid-off. Will Jacks (6 off 9) went for a wild slog sweep off a flighted delivery from leg-spinner Mayank Markande but could not make contact to be bowled, leaving RCB 65 for two in seven overs.

That was when Kohli and Patidar got together to take the innings forward.

The spinners were able to put pressure on the batters after the powerplay. As Kohli went for rotation of strike in this tough phase for RCB, Patidar broke the shackles by smashing Markande for four straight sixes in the 11th over.

The first two hits were down the ground before Patidar read Markande”s googly to send it over mid-wicket. The fourth and final six came off a wide and loopy delivery which Patidar dispatched over extra cover.

Such was the contrast in the style of approaches that Patidar took 19 balls to reach his fifty, while IPL”s leading run-getter Kohli took 37.

Karn Sharma’s scarcely believable last-over assault on Mitchell Starc gave Royal Challengers Bengaluru a glimmer of hope but the Kolkata Knight Riders kept their nerves to eke out a one-run win off the last ball in their IPL match here on Sunday. The Royal Challengers required 21 runs off the last over bowled by left-arm pacer Starc while chasing a daunting 223-run target set by the Knight Riders. The result seemed a foregone conclusion with Karn and Mohammed Siraj at the crease, but the former nearly turned the match on its head. Karn, a leg-spinner with no real pedigree with the bat, hammered three sixes off Starc to reduce the margin to three runs off two balls. But Starc redeemed himself taking a return catch to dismiss Karn (20, 7b, 3×6) and Lockie Ferguson was run out off the last ball as RCB ended up at 222 all out in 20 overs.

However, in a match with more twists and turns than a hilly road, it was KKR who first snatched the initiative making 222 for six around opener Phil Salt’s aggressive 14-ball 48 and skipper Shreyas Iyer’s composed 36-ball 50.

But the Royal Challengers were not bogged down by the imposing nature of their chase. Will Jacks (55, 32b; 4×4, 5×6) and Rajat Patidar (52; 23b, 3×4, 5×6) laid a fine foundation through a 102-run alliance for the third wicket that came off just 48 balls.

But from 137 for 2, RCB soon slipped to 155 for 6 with Andre Russell inflicting a double blow dismissing both Jacks and Russell inside three balls with his clever variation of slower balls.

Sunil Narine (2/34) also claimed two wickets in his final over to reduce RCB to 155 for six but Dinesh Karthik kept their hopes alive in a splendid partnership with Impact Sub Suyash Prabhudesai.

Returning to bowl in the penultimate over, Russell dismissed Karthik with a slower ball to make the equation tougher for RCB — 21 runs off six balls. Karn nearly dragged RCB over the line but the Eden Gardens night belonged to the Knights as they aced the final moments of a heart-stopper.

KKR now have five wins from seven matches and climbed to second spot with 10 points, two behind leaders Rajasthan Royals.

This was RCB’s sixth loss on the trot, and seventh in eight matches, as their campaign is as good as over, lying on 10th with just two points.

But RCB had their moments as Jacks was at his furious best against Starc, spanking him for 22 runs in an over en route his 29-ball fifty, his second in four matches.

Jacks’ show rubbed on Patidar who produced a 21-ball fifty, taking KKR’s best bowler Narine to cleaners as RCB maintained a run-rate over 12.

Virat Kohli began with a first-ball boundary and pulled Harshit Rana for a six in the first over before taking on Starc with disdain.

He backed away to a delivery on his legs to hammer it over fine-leg and the whole Eden was chanting ‘Kohli, Kohli’.

But his inning was cut short in a debatable fashion when Kohli was given out to a delivery that seemed a waist-high full toss with Rana taking a return catch.

He was out of his crease at the time of impact but the replays confirmed that the ball was dipping in its trajectory as the decision was upheld upon review.

Kohli was seen in an animated discussion with the on-field umpire before leaving the field with his anger in full view.

In the next over, Varun Chakravathy dismissed Faf du Plessis for a seven-ball seven.

Earlier, On a day when Narine (10, 15 balls) failed to get going, Salt, the world’s No. 2 T20I batter, was on fire smashing three sixes and seven fours to give KKR an explosive start, which later was exploited to the hilt by Iyer who hit seven fours and one six.

Andre Russell (27 not out, 20b) and Ramandeep Singh (24 not out, 9b) gave the home side some late impetus.

However, the under-fire RCB bowling unit made a spirited effort to reduce KKR to 75/3 at the end of power play, as KKR lost four wickets in 26 balls in that crucial middle-phase.

Venkatesh Iyer (16) and Rinku Singh (24) failed to convert their starts as RCB kept chipping away at the KKR batting order.

But Iyer held his nerves to produce his 20th IPL fifty, his first fifty this season, as KKR kept moving along.

He got out in the next ball after reaching 50 in 35 balls.

Russell was unusually quiet during his 27 from 20 balls (4×4). It was Ramandeep Singh’s cameo of 24 from nine balls with two fours and two sixes that lifted them to their third successive 200-plus total at the Eden Gardens.

Siraj bowled wisely with his yorkers and wide yorkers for his 1/40, while Cameron Green was the best among RCB bowlers returning with 2/35.

Yash Dayal also picked 2/56 but was given away one too many runs.

Virat Kohli’s funny quip about Dipika Pallikal left Dinesh Karthik stunned© X (formerly Twitter)

Royal Challengers Bengaluru teammates Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik engaged in a hilarious banter during a recent questions and answers session with Kohli’s ‘your wife’ remark catching Karthik completely off-guard. In a video that was posted by the franchise on social media, Kohli and Karthik along with teammates Faf Du Plessis, Mohammed Siraj and Rajat Patidar took part in a fun discussion. Karthik asked his teammates to guess his favourite sportsperson other than cricket and Kohli quickly replied “your wife” referring to well-known squash player Dipika Pallikal. Pallikal has won gold medals in both Commonwealth Games as well as Asian Games and she is considered to be one of the top squash players in the country. The answer stunned Karthik for a second who broke into laughter and even admitted that he agrees with Kohli but initially, he had a different answer in his mind.

Dinesh Karthik: Who is my favourite sportsperson other than cricketer?

Virat Kohli: Your wife?

Dinesh Karthik: It’s a great answer for sure (laughs). I had a different answer in my head. You caught me off guard, completely, I swear.

RCB slumped to a 25-run loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024 after conceding the highest team total in the history of the tournament. SRH went on to score a record 287/3 in 20 overs.

“Much better (batting performance) from us, that was a proper t20 wicket. Just tried to get close in the end, but 280 was very far. It’s tough. We tried a few things, we tried different things. There’s no way to hide when your confidence is low. The fast bowlers found it quite difficult out there. Similar to the batting perspective, we need to work on few areas. Need to make sure the run rate doesn’t go down after powerplay. The guys put up their hand and never gave up (in the run chase). It was good to see the fight, 30-40 runs from the bowling perspective was a bit too much. It’s important to go away and freshen your mind, it’s such a mental game. Sometimes you feel your mind is going to explode. When you get back to the contest you have to give full commitment,” RCB skipper Faf Du Plessis said after the match.

Following his side’s 28-run win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) pace sensation Mayank Yadav expressed happiness with his performance, with a heartwarming social media post. A three-wicket haul by Mayank and a barrage of top-class pace bowling destroyed the RCB top order and helped LSG hand the home side their third loss at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday. Following the win, Mayank took to Instagram and wrote, “Look mom I can fly”. Within just two matches, Mayank has gathered headlines for his sheer pace, touching the bowling speeds of 150 kmph-plus consistently.

During the match against RCB, Yadav bagged three wickets in his four-over spell, giving only 14 runs. Following his remarkable spell, the pacer was named the ‘Player of the Match’.

The LSG seamer scripted history at the age of 21 as he became the first bowler in the history of IPL to win the ‘Player of the Match’ award in their first two matches.

He clocked 156.7 kmph during the game against RCB and bowled the fastest delivery in the ongoing edition and overall the fourth fastest in the history of the entire tournament, breaking his own record made during the Punjab Kings match which was his debut, where he clocked 155.8 kmph. During his debut game, he took 3/27 in four overs.

It is not just Mayank’s pace that has many terming him as the next big Indian pace prospect, it is also the control over his line and length and intimidation that he has produced in a matter of couple of matches which stands out.

His consecutive three-wicket hauls in his first two games also helped him enter the elite list of players. Yadav became the sixth bowler to scalp three-plus wicket hauls in each of their first two IPL matches. The 21-year-old pacer now has embarked his name along with Lasith Malinga, Amit Singh, Mayank Markande, and Jofra Archer.

Coming to the match, RCB elected to field first after winning the toss. Openers Quinton de Kock and skipper KL Rahul (20 in 14 balls, with two sixes) gave LSG a measured start with a 53-run opening stand. There was a 56-run stand between Kock and Marcus Stoinis (24 in 15 balls, with a four and two sixes) which helped LSG cross the 100-run mark. RCB bowlers did put pressure on the batting towards the end, but Nicholas Pooran (40* in 21 balls, with a four and five sixes) finished off well for LSG, taking them to 181/5 in their 20 overs.

Glenn Maxwell (2/23) was the pick of the bowlers for RCB.

Mohammed Siraj, Yash Dayal and Reece Topley took a wicket each for RCB. In the run chase, openers Virat Kohli (22 in 16 balls, with two fours and a six) and Faf Du Plessis (19 in 13 balls, with three fours) started off with a 40-run opening stand. But a game-changing spell from Mayank Yadav (3/14) put RCB on the backfoot, reducing them to 94/5. Mahipal Lomror (33 in 13 balls, with three fours and three sixes) and Rajat Patidar (29 in 21 balls, with two fours and two sixes) tried to put up a fight, but RCB could score just 153 in 19.4 overs.

Besides Mayank, Naveen-ul-Haq (2/25) was the pick of the bowlers for LSG. Siddarth, Yash Thakur and Stoinis got a wicket each.

Mayank got the ‘Player of the Match’ for his spell. RCB is in the ninth spot with a win and two losses, giving them three points. LSG is in the fourth place with two wins and a loss, giving them a four points.
