Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has reacted to the criticism he has received for condemning Chennai Super Kings’ move of letting New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra practice at their academy ahead of the side’s recently concluded Test series in India. Ravindra emerged as the highest scorer for New Zealand in the Test series as the visitors registered a historic 3-0 whitewash over India. Ravindra was part of the CSK squad in IPL 2024 and the franchise allowed him to practice at their academy in order to get acclimatised to the Indian conditions. Uthappa was highly critical of CSK’s decision and said that when the country’s interest in at stake, a line should be drawn by the teams.

“Rachin Ravindra came here and practised at the CSK Academy. CSK is a beautiful franchise that will always look after its franchise players but a line has to be drawn where the interest of the country comes ahead of your franchise players, especially when he is a foreign player and comes and plays against our country,” Uthappa said on his YouTube channel.

“I am not surprised that CSK always go over and above for their players but somewhere in that kindness, maybe I am not saying the right thing, I absolutely love CSK, but when it comes to the country, there should be a line somewhere where we do not cross that line,” he added.

But there are some who didn’t agree with Uthappa.

“I am glad we can have an exchange of ideas even while disagreeing. Do you guys want to discuss this further over a Live session? Let me know in the comments.”

Many of the fans didn’t agree with the opinion of Uthappa, while other criticised him for his stance. Reacting to the comments, the ex-India star said, “Yesterday, I posted a video where I shared my thoughts about Rachin Ravindra training at the Super Kings Academy ahead of the Tests in India. A lot of you seemed to disagree, which is absolutely fine!

Rohit Sharma praised Rachin Ravindra for his match-winning performance as New Zealand defeated India by eight wickets in the opening Test at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday. Ravindra was named Player of the Match after the Black Caps (New Zealand) secured their first Test victory on Indian soil in 36 years. Ravindra’s crucial innings of 134 in the first innings allowed the Kiwis to establish a commanding lead of 356 runs after they bowled out Rohit’s team for just 46.

His century also made him the first New Zealand batter in 12 years to score a Test century in India, following Ross Taylor’s hundred in 2012.

Rohit mentioned that the Indian spinners aimed to contain Ravindra but commended him for playing his natural game and confidently taking his shots.

“Our spinners tried and did everything possible to extract whatever was there on the pitch. Some of the shots that Rachin played were really really good. He played very good cricket and played well against the spinners. They challenged him but you got to give him credit. He understood what our spinners tried to do and did not back off from playing his natural game, which is what gave him the result against our quality spinners,” Rohit reflected about Ravindra in the press conference.

Reflecting on how visiting teams manage to score runs in India, Rohit also mentioned Ollie Pope’s remarkable 196-run innings that led England to a 28-run victory at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

“There will be times when some of the batters who come to India will play against our spinners. We saw in the first Test of the England series where a couple of the batters scored hundred,” Rohit said.

“Even here, Rachin and Devon Conway played well and put our bowlers under pressure by playing different shots which we are expecting from their batters. Anyone who is coming to India is trying to put pressure on the Indian bowlers by doing different things but we know exactly what we want to do, they played well, they got the results, they got the runs,” Rohit added.

The second Test is set to begin on Thursday, October 24, at the Maharashtra Cricket Stadium.

The biggest find of New Zealand’s World Cup campaign in India, Rachin Ravindra on Wednesday became the youngest recipient of the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal after becoming the country’s best male cricketer of the year. Among women, Melie Kerr grabbed the major prizes at the New Zealand Cricket Awards. Kane Williamson was recognised for his outstanding form in the Test arena with the ANZ Test Player of the Year Award, and winning the Redpath Cup for men’s first-class batting.

At 24, Ravindra is the youngest winner in the award’s history, after a season that’s seen him become a mainstay of New Zealand’s red and white ball sides.

After breaking into the side in March last year, Ravindra shone in the ODI World Cup in India, scoring 578 runs at an average of 64, including three centuries and two half-centuries, including an unbeaten 123 in the tournament opener against England in Ahmedabad.

As a result, Ravindra was named as the ICC’s Emerging Player of the Year for 2023, and also secured a USD 350,000 Indian Premier League contract with Chennai Super Kings.

The Sir Richard Hadlee Medal capped off a breakout season for Ravindra on the international stage, on which he contributed for the Kiwis across all three formats.

Ravindra continued his meteoric rise in the Test arena, registering New Zealand’s highest ever maiden Test century with 240 during the first Test against South Africa at Bay Oval, and playing a key role in the BLACKCAPS first ever Test series victory over South Africa.

He also shone on the T20 international stage, featuring in 14 of the BLACKCAPS’ 26 T20I matches over the season and scoring a blistering 68 from 35 balls in the first T20I against Australia at Sky Stadium.

Kerr claimed a clean sweep of the major female awards, winning the Debbie Hockley Medal after being named ANZ ODI and T20I Player of the Year, and the Dream11 Super Smash Women’s Player of the Year.

The leg-spinning allrounder was the WHITE FERNS’ leading ODI run-scorer with 541 runs at an average of 67, notching her third and fourth ODI centuries along the way.

She was also the team’s joint leading T20 wicket-taker and second highest T20I run scorer with 252 runs at an average of 42 and a strike-rate of 118.

Kerr’s performances on the international front were recognised with selection in both the women’s ODI and T20I ICC Teams of the Year for 2023.

Kerr also led the way on the domestic front, captaining the Wellington Blaze to their fourth Dream11 Super Smash title in six years, topping the run-scoring charts with 437 runs at an average of 72, and the wicket-taking charts with 20 wickets at 8 and an economy of 4.47.
