ISRO has lined up seven launch missions by March next year, including one to demonstrate home-built electric propulsion systems for satellite and quantum key distribution technologies, and the first uncrewed mission of the Gaganyaan project.

The first of the seven launches is expected to take place next week.

India’s heaviest rocket, LVM3, will place in orbit the Bluebird-6 communication satellite for U.S.-based AST Spacemobile through a commercial agreement with ISRO’s New Space India Limited (NSIL), Union minister Jitendra Singh recently told Parliament.

The human-rated LVM3 will soar into the sky early next year, carrying the first uncrewed mission of India’s human spaceflight Gaganyaan with a robot ‘Vyommitra’ onboard the crew module.

One more uncrewed mission is planned later next year before ISRO sends Indian astronauts into low earth orbit in 2027.

“First uncrewed mission of Gaganyaan to demonstrate end-to-end mission, including aerodynamics characterization of human rated launch vehicle, mission operations of Orbital Module, re-entry and recovery of Crew Module,” Mr. Singh said.

Next year will also see the launch of India’s first industry-built Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) that will put in orbit Oceansat satellite. The PSLV will have two more passengers — Indo-Mauritius Joint Satellite and LEAP-2 satellite of Dhruva Space.

To increase commercial launches of satellites, NSIL had given a contract to a HAL-L&T consortium to manufacture five PSLV rockets, under a technology transfer agreement signed in September 2025.

An ISRO-built PSLV will put in orbit an earth observation satellite (EOS-N1) for a strategic user and 18 smaller satellites of Indian and international customers.

The GSLV-Mk II rocket is expected to launch the EOS-5 satellite or GISAT-1A, which will be a replacement for GISAT-1 which failed to reach the intended orbit in 2021.

The PSLV63 mission of ISRO will put in orbit the TDS-01 satellite to demonstrate technologies such as the high thrust electric propulsion system, the quantum key distribution, and indigenous travelling wave tube amplifier.

The High Thrust Electric Propulsion System (HTEP) will enable ISRO to launch all electric satellites in future. This technology will make satellites lighter and reduce the dependence of chemical fuels.

“The technologies and components, once proved in TDS-01, will be employed in navigation and communication missions in the near-future,” Mr. Singh said.

A four-tonne communication satellite carries more than two tonnes of liquid fuel, which is used to fire thrusters to steer the satellite in space. But in case of electric propulsion, fuel requirement reduces to just 200 kg, an official said.

As fuel mass is reduced, the electric propulsion system-based satellite will not weigh more than two tonnes but will still have the power of a 4-tonne satellite.

The indigenous TWT (Travelling Wave Tube) Amplifier will enable self-reliance in critical technologies of satellite transponders.

The Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) will also launch a dedicated satellite before March 2026.

Sriharikota:

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced that the lift-off for the anticipated launch of PSLV-C59/PROBA-3 mission satellites will take place on December 4 (Wednesday), at 4:06 p.m. from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

The mission will entail the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)-C59 carrying around satellites weighing nearly 550 kg in a highly elliptical orbit.

The PROBA-3 mission is an “In-Orbit Demonstration (IOD) mission” by the European Space Agency (ESA).

Posting about the anticipated launch on X, the space organisation said, “The PSLVC59/PROBA-3 Mission, the 61st flight of PSLV and the 26th using PSLV-XL configuration, is set to carry ESA’s PROBA-3 satellites (~550kg) into a highly elliptical orbit.”

“The mission goal is to demonstrate precise formation flying,” said ISRO in a statement regarding the launch.

The mission consists of two spacecraft, namely the Coronagraph Spacecraft (CSC) and the Occulter Spacecraft (OSC) which will be launched together in a “stacked configuration” (one on top of another).

PSLV is a launch vehicle that helps carry satellites other various other payloads to space, or according to ISRO’s requirements. This launch vehicle is India’s first vehicle to be equipped with liquid stages.

The first PSLV was launched successfully in October 1994.

The PSLVC-59 will have four stages of launch, according to ISRO.

The total mass that the launch vehicle will be lifting off is around 320 tonnes.

The space organisation also highlighted how this launch mission also exemplifies the “trusted precision” of the PSLV and collaboration with other agencies.

“This mission exemplifies the trusted precision of PSLV and the collaboration of NSIL (NewSpace India Limited), ISRO, and ESA,” said the post.

The last launch of the PSLV was PSLV-C58, launching the XPOSAT satellite into an “Eastward low inclination orbit on January 1, 2024”.

The ESA said Proba-3 is the world’s first precision formation flying mission. It will study the solar corona, the outermost and hottest layer of the Sun’s atmosphere.

The satellite was also called (Xray Polarimeter Satellite), it is the country’s first dedicated scientific satellite from ISRO to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial sources.

The Aditya-L1 spacecraft is an unmanned observation satellite.

In a significant leap for the country’s space exploration endeavours, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday successfully launched its maiden solar mission, Aditya-L1, carrying seven payloads for a detailed study of the sun.

India’s first solar space observatory mission was launched on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) XL from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 11.50 am. The separation of Aditya-L1 and its injection into an elliptical orbit around the Earth were successful and took about 63 minutes.

Several politicians across party lines congratulated ISRO on the successful launch of the mission and its importance for science and humanity.

President Droupadi Murmu celebrated the significant milestone as a “historic feat,” underscoring its contribution to expanding our understanding of outer space. She conveyed her sincere congratulations to the dedicated ISRO scientists and engineers for their outstanding achievement and offered her utmost support for the mission’s prosperous outcome.

“The launch of Aditya-L1, India’s first solar mission, is a landmark achievement that takes India’s indigenous space programme to a new trajectory. It will help us better understand space and celestial phenomena. I congratulate the scientists and engineers at ISRO for this exceptional feat. My best wishes for the success of the mission,” President Murumu said.

Appreciating the hardworking scientists responsible for this extraordinary accomplishment in India’s space exploration journey, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his confidence in India’s continued efforts to enhance our “understanding of the universe for the welfare of entire humanity.”

“After the success of Chandrayaan-3, India continues its space journey. Congratulations to our scientists and engineers at ISRO for the successful launch of India’s first Solar Mission, Aditya -L1. Our tireless scientific efforts will continue in order to develop a better understanding of the universe for the welfare of entire humanity,” PM Modi said.

The main opposition party in the Indian parliament, Congress, hailed the launch of Aditya-L1 as a “stupendous achievement” for India, as it shared a timeline of the mission from its conceptualization for understanding the “continuity in the ISRO saga”.

In a post in Hindi on X, the Congress said ISRO has given many opportunities to the country to be proud.

“After Chandrayaan-3, ISRO has again raised the nation’s prestige by successfully launching Aditya L-1,” the party said.

The entire Congress family is proud of this unprecedented achievement of the country’s scientists, it said.  Best wishes to the entire ISRO team, the party added.

In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Today’s launch of Aditya-L1 is another stupendous achievement of ISRO and for India!” “While saluting ISRO once again, it is worthwhile recalling the recent timeline for Aditya-L1 to understand the continuity in the ISRO saga,” he said.

According to ISRO, Aditya-L1 is the first space-based observatory to study the Sun. The spacecraft, after travelling about 1.5 million km from the Earth over 125 days, is expected to be placed in a Halo orbit around the Lagrangian point L1 which is considered closest to the Sun.
