A UK employment tribunal has awarded a pregnant employee 93,000 pounds (around ₹1 crore) in compensation after her boss unfairly dismissed her. According to the Independent, the woman’s employer, Ammar Kabir, terminated her via text, citing business difficulties and the need for an in-office worker. The message, which abruptly ended her employment and was punctuated with a “jazz hands” emoji, was ruled unjustified by the tribunal.

Notably, Mr Kabir’s remarks came after Paula Miluska requested to work from home due to severe morning sickness. The termination message concluded with a vague promise to “catch up outside of work” and a dismissive “jazz hands” emoji, which featured a smiling face with outstretched palms.

The UK employment tribunal awarded her 93,616.74 pounds in compensation after ruling that her pregnancy was the reason for her unfair dismissal from Roman Property Group Limited in Birmingham.

Ms. Miluska, an investment consultant, began experiencing morning sickness after learning of her pregnancy in October 2022. Due to increasing nausea, she requested to work from home, citing her midwife’s advice that this would be best during the peak period of pregnancy nausea.

She wrote in her text, “The midwife was saying that at the moment if I can work from home it’ll be best as these next two weeks are usually the peak of pregnancy nausea due to hormones. Also, she mentioned that when I go back to work you need to do a health and safety assessment. I’m not sure what that is.”

The tribunal judge noted aid there were “no other text messages” between the pair until 26 November when Mr Kabir asked Ms Miluska how she was feeling.

The following evening, Mr. Kabir asked Ms. Miluska if she could work a few days the next week, with shorter hours, but the tribunal deemed this request insincere. Despite Mr. Kabir’s claim that he needed her to cover his holiday absence, the tribunal concluded that this was merely a pretext and that Ms. Miluska’s pregnancy was the true reason for her termination.

Buldhana:

A 32-year-old pregnant woman in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district has been detected with ‘fetus in fetu’, an extremely rare condition in which a malformed fetus is located within the body of another fetus, an official said.

The rare congenital anomaly was detected a few days back when the woman, who is 35 weeks pregnant, went to Buldhana District Women’s Hospital for a regular check-up, he said.

Doctors came to know about the condition during the woman’s sonography at the hospital, the official said.

Obstetrician and gynaecologist at the hospital, Dr Prasad Agarwal, told reporters on Tuesday that ‘fetus in fetu’ is one of the rarest cases — one in five lakh.

Only about 200 such cases have been reported (across the world) till now, that too after delivery, including 10-15 cases in India, he said.

“But I was lucky and vigilant enough to notice something very unusual with this baby, which is almost of 35 weeks, grossly normal growing fetus with a few bones and fetus-like structure in its abdomen,” he said.

“It struck me immediately that this is not normal. It was ‘fetus in fetu’, one of the rarest cases in the world. We had asked for a second opinion and the case was confirmed by radiologist Dr Shruti Thorat,” he said.

The woman has been referred to a medical facility in neighbouring Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for a safe delivery and further procedure, the hospital authorities said.

Karimnagar:

The Telangana Road Transport Corporation (RTC) employees at the Karimnagar bus station facilitated the delivery of a woman who developed labour pains while waiting for a bus.

The 35-year-old woman, a labourer from Odisha, developed labour pains at the bus station when she was waiting for a bus on Sunday along with her husband.

After being informed by her husband, a place was arranged for her delivery in the bus station itself, Karimnagar bus depot manager Rajani Krishna told PTI on Monday.

Female supervisors and sweepers put up sarees around the woman and she had a normal delivery. She gave birth to a girl, he said.

Later, the mother and child were shifted to a government hospital in Karimnagar.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy appreciated the female RTC personnel of Karimnagar bus station for their timely help to the woman.
