Out-of-favour Indian cricket team batter Prithvi Shaw has been in the headlines lately for all the wrong reasons. Prithvi was dropped from the Mumbai team due to his fitness and the batter did not find any buyer in the IPL 2025 auction. Released by Delhi Capitals, the batter had a base price for Rs 75 lakh but he failed to attract even a single bid. It was a shocking turn of events for a batter who was considered to be a major young talent by experts and was the opening batter for India in Tests just a few years ago. Former India batter Pravin Amre, who coached Prithvi during his time with DC, said that he is “his own enemy” and pointed out that being “God-gifted” is not enough for a cricketer.

“What we want, to be honest, is that he loses 10 kg and becomes match fit. What is stopping him is his fitness. Nobody has a doubt about his cricketing skill. He is God-gifted but the problem is, he is his own enemy. Now, I don’t think anybody can motivate him. Everybody tried and I think he has to motivate himself now. Nobody else can help him. If you are going through a tough time, go and hit the nets. He has to hit the gym and the nets both,” Amre told The Indian Express.

Amre went on to say that Prithvi needs to work on his fitness and loss at least 10kg soon.

“But in his case that time has been long and that is what we are worried about. He should not go in a reverse direction now from here. He is now an adult, to be honest, he has to help himself right now. He has good hand-eye coordination. But for that timing, he needs to have proper footwork. And because of that body weight, he is late on the ball. He is not able to transfer the weight, his feet are not moving. He is not in the right position. And that is why we want him to work on his fitness,” Amre pointed out.

Prithvi Shaw made headlines as he went unsold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. Shaw, who had been released by Delhi Capitals (DC), did not fetch a single bid at his base price of INR 75 lakh. In recent months, Shaw was also dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad. Speaking on the 25-year-old’s downfall, former DC talent scout and assistant coach Pravin Amre speculated that earning close to ‘Rs 30-40 crore’ at such a young age may have put Shaw off-track with regards to his career. Amre, who played a big role in bringing Shaw to DC, also revealed that he had given Vinod Kambli‘s example to Shaw, but even that did not work.

“Three years back, I gave him Vinod Kambli’s example. I’ve seen Kambli’s downfall from close quarters. It’s not easy to teach certain things to this generation,” Amre stated, in an interview with The Times of India.

Vinod Kambli came through at the same time as legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, unlike Tendulkar, Kambli’s career derailed at a young age, as he played his last Test match at the age of 23.

“Thanks to Delhi Capitals, he (Shaw) must’ve earned Rs 30-40 crore by the time he was 23. Will even an IIM graduate get that type of money? When you earn so much at such a young age, you tend to lose focus. It is important that you know how to manage money, have good friends and prioritise cricket,” Amre said further.

Shaw was retained by Delhi Capitals for Rs 7.5 crore in the IPL 2022 retentions.

“It was indiscipline which hampered Prithvi’s career. The hunger to come back and do well was missing,” Amre said.

“It’s so disappointing to see that a talent like him is going in reverse direction. Someone told me that before he left for Mumbai for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, Prithvi cracked a superb century in a practice match at the Cricket Club of India Even today, he can hit a 30-ball fifty in the IPL. Maybe he couldn’t handle the glamour and money, the side-effects of the IPL. His example can be a case study in Indian cricket. What’s happening to him shouldn’t happen to other cricketers. Talent alone can’t take you to the top. The three Ds – discipline, determination and dedication – are important.”

Shaw has received guidance from several massive names in the cricket fraternity, having worked with the likes of Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly at DC, Rahul Dravid during his U19 days and has even reportedly received advice from Sachin Tendulkar. But it has been to no avail.

Delhi Capitals assistant coach Pravin Amre opened up about the exclusion of Prithvi Shaw from the playing XI for the past couple of matches after the franchise concluded their Indian Premier League 2024 group stage. Shaw was retained by the Capitals ahead of the season and didn’t feature in the first two games. In his first game of IPL 2024, he struck a quick 43 off 27 balls against Chennai Super Kings. The right-handed batter went on to score 66(40) against the five-time champion Mumbai Indians. But his form started to waver after that.

On the other hand, Abhishek Porel made the most of the opportunity and smacked 327 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 159.51.

Porel starred in DC’s final game of the group stage on Tuesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium against the Lucknow Super Giants. DC stood victorious with a 19-run win.

He left the opposition bowlers gobsmacked with his knock of 58 off 33 deliveries. He aided DC in the powerplay, which saw them amass 73 runs. He also forged a 92-run stand with Shai Hope for the second wicket.

“He [Shaw] was our retained player, and as you see, last four [of five] games he was also on the bench. But that’s the IPL. If you are not in form, you can’t [keep your place]. Ultimately, the pressure for the team is so much that every game is important and we have to win,” Amre said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

“And we had done that. Without playing him, we won the games. And whoever got the opportunity… I think Abishek grabbed the opportunities with both hands,” he added.

Shaw made a total of eight appearances for DC in the ongoing season. In eight matches, he has 198 runs at an average of 24.75 and a strike rate of 163.64. In his eight appearances, he has a sole fifty to his name.

While Porel featured across various positions for DC. In the three matches the left-handed batter played as an opener, Porel amassed 159 runs at a strike rate of 165.62.

Sanju Samson reacts after his dismissal against Delhi Capitals© BCCI

Delhi Capitals assistant coach Pravin Amre believes that umpire’s decision should be respected when it comes to the controversy over Sanju Samson‘s dismissal during the IPL 2024 match against Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday. Samson, who was playing on 86, played a lofted shot straight down the ground off the bowling of Mukesh Kumar but Shai Hope ended up completing the catch at long-on. However, he was extremely close to the boundary line and replays showed that there was a chance that he touched the boundary line before the catch was completed. The third umpire ruled in DC’s favour resulting in Samson getting involved in a heated argument with the on-field umpires regarding the matter.

There has been a lot of conversations surrounding the matter but Amre believes that it was a close call and considering the technology available, the umpires’s decision is the final decision.

“In IPL some moments are very crucial, and it was a deciding moment in the game. Sanju was batting so well. We have to give credit to the way Hope judged that catch. Umpires are there, and there is so much technology. We also thought from the dugout that he has (touched the boundary) but it (happens) in the game, and the umpire’s decision is the final decision. It wasn’t an easy catch, it was really travelling. After the game also I spoke to him and he said the ball came very, very fast,” Amre told reporters.

DC kept their IPL 2024 playoff dreams with a crucial victory over RR.

“The way our bowlers executed at the back end was the main positive and it was really good to see. We will try to learn from every game. Even when we lose or win, we will keep our head down and keep moving forward. As always Kuldeep delivered which was great to see. It was close to par and at the same time we were thinking that if we can restrict them to 200 that would be fair and that was the thought process,” DC captain Rishabh Pant said after the match.

Delhi Capitals (DC) assistant coach Pravin Amre justified his team’s decision to use Lalit Yadav in the powerplay during a clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Saturday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. An all-round SRH overcame a scare from Jake Fraser McGurk and secured a 67-run win over DC in the IPL 2024. SRH’s opening pair Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head with their extravagant batting carnage from smoked Lalit in the first over of the game, gathering 21 runs with the help of two boundaries and 2 maximums.

Delhi captain Rishabh Pant gave Lalit the ball to bowl another over during the powerplay, and the off-spinner conceded 20 runs in the fourth over as SRH raced to 83 for no loss in only four overs. In the fourth over, Abhishek struck Lalit Yadav for two sixes and Head hit him for one six. Lalit Yadav did not bowl another over in the game, finishing with no wickets and 41 runs in two overs.

The DC coach claimed that the team’s management intended to deploy Lalit on the powerplay due to his expertise in the local conditions.

“SRH’s strength was the openers. The other teams also could not control it. We thought that Lalit Yadav was a local, Delhi boy, so we took a chance on that. We have to give credit to Abhishek, for the way he handled the spinners. Lalit can be useful because he is a local boy and that’s why we gambled on that.” Amre said in a post-match presentation.

“We were thinking on righty-lefty. We saw dew last time but it was unfortunately not there today but credit to their batting as they put on a record 125 in powerplay. Credit also to Natarajan for taking wickets in such a good batting track.

Sunrisers once again relied on the outstanding power-hitting of openers Head and Abhishek, who helped them set a record 125 for 0 in the powerplay, the highest in men’s T20 cricket. Head’s 32-ball-89 and Abhishek’s 46 off 12 balls, sealed SRH’s match-winning total of 266 for 7 in their 20 overs.

“Credit to the way Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma batter during the powerplay. The intent we have shown was incredible. We have also seen how Jake Fraser-McGurk can bat in his innings. If he had batted 2 more overs, we would have had a chance. Abishek Porel is a finisher but we wanted to use him in powerplays also,” said Delhi Capitals assistant coach.

In the match, SRH was put on the field first by DC. Head (89 in 32 balls, with 11 fours and six sixes) and Abhishek (46 in 12 balls, with two fours and six sixes) put on an explosive stand of 131 runs in 6.2 overs. Later, contributions from Shahbaz Ahmed (59* in 29 balls, with two fours and five sixes) and Nitish Kumar (37 in 27 balls, with two fours and two sixes) came in handy to take SRH to 266/7 in their 20 overs.

Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for DC with 4/55. Mukesh Kumar and Axar Patel also got a six.

In the run chase, DC managed to keep up with SRH’s run rate in the first half of their innings despite losing wickets. Knocks from Jake Fraser McGurk (65 in 18 balls, five fours and seven sixes) and Abhishek Porel (42 in 22 balls, with seven fours and a six) kept the Capitals alive. However after their dismissal, DC lost momentum and despite skipper Rishabh Pant’s fighting (44 in 35 balls, with five fours and a six), the Capitals were restricted to 199 in 19.1 overs.
