The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a bail plea of former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who faces charges of rape and sexual assault.

A bench of Justices Dela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma rejected the plea and observed that Revanna is very influential.

Appearing for Revanna, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi said that a charge sheet has been filed in the case and section 376 of the IPC was not there in the initial complaint.

The bench said it could not interfere with the Karnataka High Court’s October 21 decision denying him bail.

Rohatgi sought the liberty to approach the court after six months. The bench, however, said it could not say anything about that and dismissed his plea.

In August, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Karnataka which is probing four cases of sexual assault and harassment against Revanna submitted a 2,144-page charge sheet.

The charge sheet relates to a case in which the former MLA is accused of raping a woman, who worked as a domestic help for his family. There are two rape cases against the JD(S) leader and a sexual assault case.

Prajwal Revanna is the son of Holenarasipura JD(S) MLA H D Revanna and grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda.

Denied bail by the Karnataka High Court in two rape cases, former MP Prajwal Revanna has approached the Supreme Court, which will hear his petition on Monday.

On October 21, the High Court had denied bail to Revanna, who is the grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda and nephew of Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy, in two cases of rape and a case of recording a video of sexual harassment. He faces another case of rape as well. 

The cases were filed after several women alleged in April that the then MP had forced him into sexual acts which were then filmed. 

Lawyers representing Revanna have approached the Supreme Court challenging the High Court’s denial of bail and the hearing has been scheduled for Monday.

Videos showing Prajwal Revanna sexually assaulting multiple women had begun surfacing on April 23, three days before polling in the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, from where he was a Janata Dal Secular (JDS) candidate. As the row escalated, he left for Germany on April 27, a day after voting took place. 

An SIT was formed to investigate the charges and a Blue Corner notice was also issued to help trace the MP, but he remained elusive. Finally, after appeals and a warning from Mr Gowda and Mr Kumaraswamy, the JDS leader returned to India and was arrested in the early hours of May 31.

He lost the election in Hassan, results for which were declared on June 4, by a margin of over 40,000 votes. He was also suspended from the JDS. 

Bengaluru:

The Karnataka High Court on Monday rejected three bail petitions filed by prime accused Prajwal Revanna, a former MP and grandson of former PM HD Deve Gowda, in the sensational sex video scam.

A single-judge bench of Justice M. Nagaprasanna passed the order, denying the bail in connection with two rape cases and a case of recording of video of a victim of sexual harassment.

The court is yet to give its order on another rape case.

Prajwal Revanna is facing four cases in connection with the sex video scam.

Senior counsel Prabhuling Navadgi appeared for Prajwal Revanna and senior counsel Prof. Ravi Varma Kumar argued for the prosecution and submitted before the court not to grant bail in the case.

One of the victims from Hassan had filed a rape case against Prajwal Revanna in Bengaluru Cyber police station. The court had rejected the bail in the matter.

Another case is related to the sexual assault of a maid at the farmhouse in Holenarasipura. The disturbing video of the incident has gone viral on social media during the Lok Sabha election. The alleged videos of the aged maid pleading to spare her as she is an elderly lady, who served food to his father and other elders of the family as she was sexually assaulted had stirred outrage. The victim was kidnapped after the video surfaced on social media and the police arrested Prajwal Revanna’s father, JD-S MLA HD Revanna. Presently, he is out on conditional bail.

The police had also issued an arrest warrant against Prajwal’s mother Bhavani Revanna in the case. However, she managed to obtain bail. The bail order was challenged by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the Supreme Court and the apex court upheld the bail order by the Karnataka High Court.

Another case relates to forcing a woman from Hassan to strip and record her video when she approached Prajwal Revanna for her son’s admission to a reputed school. Both cases were registered at the Cyber police station in Bengaluru.

The High Court has stated that it would pass the order in connection with the rape case of a former ZP member in his office in two days. Prajwal Revanna has been lodged in the Bengaluru Central Prison for four months.

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to set aside the anticipatory bail given to Bhavani Revanna, the mother of suspended JD(S) leader and rape accused Prajwal Revanna, in a kidnapping case while dismissing the Karnataka government’s plea.

In a setback to the Karnataka government, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan took into account that the chargesheet had been filed in the case and refused to interfere with the Karnataka High Court order.

During the hearing, the state government counsel claimed the mother was directly involved in allegedly procuring women for her son.

The apex court noted that the principal accused in the case had been arrested and put under custodial interrogation.

After the Karnataka government sought the cancellation of the anticipatory bail to Bhavani, the top court on July 10, refused to set it aside and sought her response.

The high court had on June 18 granted anticipatory bail to Bhavani emphasising she had already answered 85 questions during the investigation, making it unfair to claim she was not cooperating with the special investigation team (SIT) probing the alleged sexual abuse cases against her son.

The SIT had sought her custody in connection with the purported kidnapping of a house-help in K R Nagar in Mysuru district after she failed to appear for questioning.

The high court while granting the pre-arrest bail said media trials should be avoided and highlighted the state’s allegations of non-cooperation were unconvincing since Bhavani had already provided extensive responses during her interrogation.

The court dismissed the SIT’s argument that she had given misleading answers.

On June 7, with the reprieve, the high court prevented Bhavani from entering Mysuru and Hassan districts while extending the embargo on June 14.

The court had permitted the SIT to take her to Hassan and Mysuru districts for investigation.

Bhavani is accused of trying to prevent the survivor, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by her son, from filing a complaint.

Prajwal is currently in judicial custody at Parappana Agrahara Jail for allegedly sexually abusing several women and video-recording the alleged crime.

The cases of sexual abuse came to light after pen drives containing his alleged videos were reportedly circulated in Hassan ahead of the Lok Sabha polls on April 26.

SIT officials arrested Prajwal soon after he landed at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport from Germany on May 31. He had left for Germany on April 27, a day after polls in Hassan.

A “blue corner notice” seeking information about his whereabouts was issued by Interpol, following a request by the SIT via the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The Bengaluru police has filed a chargesheet in the second case registered against former MP Prajwal Revanna, who is facing charges of rape and sexual assault, in a special court here.

Revanna is currently under judicial custody at Parappana Agrahara Jail here, and a Special Investigation Team is probing four separate cases against him, officials said on Friday.

According to police, the second case against Prajwal Revanna was filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on May 1 after a 44-year-old former member of the Hassan Zilla Panchayat accused him of repeatedly raping her.

In a statement, police said the SIT team conducted a comprehensive investigation of the case and during the probe, more than 120 witnesses were interrogated and statements of victims, key witnesses were recorded.

“A 1691 page comprehensive chargesheet has been filed against former Hassan Lok Sabha constituency MP Prajwal Revanna. The chargesheet has been submitted to a special court here after collecting evidence and obtaining expert opinions,” it stated.

He was arrested by the SIT on May 31 upon arrival at Bengaluru Airport from Germany in connection with a case registered at the Holenarasipura Town Police Station. Prajwal Revanna was remanded to custody the following day.

Revanna had failed in his bid to retain the Hassan parliamentary constituency in the recent polls.

A Karnataka court on Tuesday rejected the bail petition of former PM HD Deve Gowda’s grandson and JD-S MLC Suraj Revanna in the unnatural sex case.

The order was pronounced by the 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) as the court took up the petition submitted by the counsel of Suraj Revanna in the first case lodged against him at the Holenarasipura police station.

Suraj Revanna, who is facing charges of indulging in forceful unnatural sex with JD-S workers, is in judicial custody till July 18.

He was investigated by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the CID after the victims registered cases against him at the Holenarasipura Rural police station. He was arrested on June 22 after being summoned for questioning.

The government later handed over the case to the special wing of the CID.

Suraj Revanna’s brother and former JD-S MP Prajwal Revanna is also in jail in connection with the sex video scandal. Their father and JD-S MLA HD Revanna was arrested but later released on conditional bail in connection with a kidnap case linked to the sex video scandal, and mother Bhavani Revanna is also out on conditional bail in the same case.

A second case of sexually assaulting a man was registered against Janata Dal (Secular) MLC Suraj Revanna on Tuesday at Holenarasipura police station in Hassan district.

The case was registered based on a complaint by a close aide of Suraj Revanna.

Revanna’s aide had earlier filed a complaint on behalf of the Member of the Legislative Council against a JDS worker, apparently to protect him.

The first case of sexual assault was registered against Revanna on Saturday night. The next day, he was arrested and remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody. On Monday, the court remanded him to eight days’ police custody.

“The process of registering the second FIR is on against Suraj Revanna,” a senior police officer from Hassan told PTI.

Suraj, a doctor, is the grandson of former Prime Minister and JDS patriarch HD Deve Gowda and son of Holenarasipura MLA HD Revanna.

He is the elder brother of former Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, who is also in police custody for allegedly sexually assaulting several women in Hassan and filming them.

Suraj and Prajwal’s parents, HD Revanna and Bhavani, are out on bail on charges of kidnapping a woman who had figured in one among the huge cache of explicit videos showing many women being sexually assaulted, allegedly by Prajwal.

Prajwal had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election as the NDA candidate as his party JDS formed an alliance with the BJP in September last year.

A court here on Monday remanded JD(S) MLC Suraj Revanna, who has been arrested in connection with a case of alleged sexual abuse of a man, in the custody of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) till July 1.

Suraj Revanna, brother of former MP Prajwal Revanna who is facing allegations of sexually abusing several women, was arrested by police in Hassan on Sunday. The case was then handed over to the CID by the state government.

After shifting him to Bengaluru from Hassan, the CID had on Sunday night produced the 37-year-old before the 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court (ACMM) judge, who remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days.

The police have filed an FIR against him under IPC sections 377 (unnatural offences), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) following a complaint filed by the 27-year-old, a JD(S) worker, who alleged that he was sexually assaulted on June 16 by the MLC at his farmhouse in Ghannikada.

After getting the case filed, the CID approached the court on Monday seeking his custody. The judge remanded him to their custody for eight days till July 1.

Suraj Revanna, who is the eldest son of Holenarasipura MLA H D Revanna and grandson of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, has categorically denied the charge.

He had also alleged that the JD(S) worker had filed a “false complaint” in a bid to extort Rs five crore from him.

On Friday, the police registered a case of extortion against the man on a complaint by Suraj Revanna’s close aide Shivakumar.

Shivakumar had alleged that the party worker was trying to extort money from Suraj Revanna by threatening to lodge a false case of sexual abuse against him.

It has been alleged that while the man demanded Rs 5 crore from Suraj Revanna, later it was reduced to Rs 2 crore.

Suraj’s father was arrested recently for allegedly kidnapping a sexual abuse victim of Prajwal Revanna to prevent her from testifying against the former MP, and is out on bail. His mother Bhavani Revanna has secured anticipatory bail in the same case.

Janata Dal-Secular leader Suraj Revanna, the brother of Prajwal Revanna who is facing sex crimes allegations by multiple women, has been arrested allegedly for sexually assaulting a male party worker. 

A case was filed against Suraj Revanna based on a complaint registered by the 27-year-old party worker who accused the JD(S) leader of sexually assaulting him at a farm house in Karnataka’s Hassan district on June 16.

Suraj Revanna, meanwhile, has refuted the charge and alleged that the man filed a false complaint against him after he refused to pay him Rs 5 crore.

Suraj Revanna’s friend Shivkumar had also yesterday filed a police complaint, alleging that the JD(S) worker had approached him earlier this month and demanded Rs 5 crore, threatening that he would file a sexual abuse case against Suraj Revanna if his demands were not met.

Shivkumar said that the man had first approached him to help him find a job. Shivkumar gave him Suraj Revanna’s number and asked him to contact Suraj. But he started blackmailing Shivkumar and Suraj after he failed to get the job, the complaint said.

Suraj’s arrest comes days after former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna was sent to judicial custody. The 33-year-old grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former PM H D Deve Gowda had failed in his bid to retain the Hassan parliamentary constituency in the recent polls.
