Prajwal Revanna Case: Revanna is ex-Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda’s grandson.

New Delhi:

Karnataka lawmaker Prajwal Revanna – who fled to Germany last month, shortly after horrific sex crimes allegations by women who said he forced them into sexual acts – released a statement Monday, claiming comments and “political drama” by opposition leaders, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, “drove me to depression and I was pushed into isolation”.

“I apologise to my parents… I was in depression. I will come (back to India) and appear before the SIT (a special investigative team set up by the state government) on May 31 (Friday),” Revanna said.

“I will cooperate to the best of my abilities and provide all answers. I have full faith in the legal system (and) I will come out of these false cases against me. I have the blessings of God and my family…”

On May 1, four days after he fled the country, Revanna posted a message on X. He said, “I am not in Bengaluru… I have communicated (to the police) through my lawyer. The truth will prevail soon.”

Revanna is a Janata Dal (Secular) leader and the grandson of party patriarch and ex-Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, and nephew of senior leader and ex-Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy.

He is also the sitting MP from Karnataka’s Hassan Lok Sabha seat, which he has been nominated to defend in the 2024 general election. The JDS is allied with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP.

Revanna’s message – his first public comment on charges against him – comes after a warning from Deve Gowda, who told his grandson to return home and surrender “or face your family’s anger”.

Deve Gowda said he had warned Revanna to “not test my patience” and that it took him time to recover from the “shock and pain”. The former Prime Minister – targeted by the ruling Congress, former allies turned political rivals, over claims it was he sent Revanna abroad – stressed he had called for “the harshest punishment under the law” for his grandson “if (he is) found guilty…”

Revanna’s uncle, HD Kumaraswamy, has also made an appeal.

The ex-Chief Minister last week also appealed to his nephew. “I have openly appealed to him… told him, ‘if you have respect for the party and Deve Gowda, come back…’ Cooperate with the probe. If you have not done anything prove it. If you have, then face the punishment,” Revanna was told.

Revanna’s return home may be complicated by the fact the Ministry of External Affairs is set to cancel his diplomatic passport. A request to this effect has been made by the state government.

The centre is in the process of cancelling the travel document, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said. Mr Jaishankar also took the chance for a jibe against Karnataka’s ruling Congress, declaring the request to cancel the passport was made only on May 21, several days after the scandal broke.

The Congress and the BJP have attacked each other over the Revanna case.

The former has pointed to the alliance between the BJP and the JDS to claim Prajwal Revanna is being shielded, while the latter has criticised the state government for delayed reactions.

Prajwal Revanna – who faces an arrest warrant from a MP/MLA court – has denied all charges.

Prajwal Ravanna is facing charges of multiple instances of sexually abusing women

New Delhi:

The Ministry of External Affairs has received a letter from the Karnataka government for the cancellation of the diplomatic passport of suspended Janata Dal Secular MP Prajwal Revanna, official sources said on Thursday.

The Karnataka government’s request to the Centre came after Prajwal Revanna, who is facing charges of multiple instances of sexually abusing women, fled the country using his diplomatic passport last month.

“The MEA has received a letter from the Karnataka government for cancellation of diplomatic passport in respect of MP Prajwal Revanna. This is being processed,” official sources said.

Prajwal Revanna, who is former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda’s grandson, is at the centre of a political storm after hundreds of explicit videos allegedly featuring him leaked late last month. The 33-year-old MP faces multiple cases of rape, sexual harassment, voyeurism and criminal intimidation.

Revanna, who is the NDA nominee for the Hassan Lok Sabha seat, reportedly fled to Germany on April 27, hours before the first case was filed against him.

Karnataka police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) is now probing the high-profile case and a lookout notice and a Blue Corner notice have been issued to track Revanna down.

In the wake of the allegations, Prajwal Revanna had said in a social media post on May 1, “As I am not in Bangalore to attend the enquiry, I have communicated to C.I.D Bangalore through my Advocate. The truth will prevail soon.”

His father and Mr Deve Gowda’s son HD Revanna, a JDS MLA, is also accused in cases of molestation and kidnapping. He was arrested earlier this month and is now out on bail.

The veteran leader faces a case, in which a man has alleged that he was involved in kidnapping his mother, who worked as a house help at his home for six years. The complainant has alleged that a video showing Prajwal Revanna sexually abusing his mother leaked recently and his mother went missing soon after.

HD Revanna, however, has termed the case a “political conspiracy”.

The MP is allegedly involved in the sex scandal that has rocked Karnataka.

New Delhi:

Amid the political row over sex scandal-accused Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna, the Ministry of External Affairs has said that he travelled to Germany on a diplomatic passport and no political clearance was either sought or given by the ministry.

Mr Revanna, who is the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and nephew of former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, was suspended from the Janata Dal (Secular) over videos in which he can allegedly be seen sexually assaulting multiple women. The Hassan MP had left for Germany on Saturday, a day after voting for the Lok Sabha elections had taken place in the constituency.

The videos of the alleged sexual assault had begun circulating online the same day.

To a question on whether Mr Revanna was travelling on a diplomatic passport and whether political clearance was given by the ministry, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at the weekly media briefing on Thursday, “No political clearance was either sought from or issued by the MEA in respect of the travel of the said MP to Germany. Obviously, no visa note was issued either. No visa is required for diplomatic passport holders to travel to Germany.”

“The ministry has also not issued any visa note for any other country for the said MP. He travelled on a diplomatic passport,” he added.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had, on Wednesday, written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked for the cancellation of the diplomatic passport of Mr Revanna and the initiation of other necessary steps to ensure his swift return.

When he was asked about this and whether Mr Revanna has been located anywhere in Germany Mr Jaiswal said a diplomatic passport can be revoked under the Passport Act, 1967. “Under the provisions of the Act, the passport can be revoked based on the directions of a court. We have not received any such directions so far,” he said.

To another question on whether taking political clearance is mandatory while travelling on a diplomatic passport, the spokesperson only said Members of Parliament are entitled to such passports and that no political clearance was taken.

Earlier on Thursday, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said the suspended JDS leader has to appear before the Special Investigation Team investigating the sex scandal and also hinted that he could be arrested if he did not do so.

The political slugfest over the issue has also escalated, with the Congress attacking the JDS and the BJP, inviting sharp retorts from both parties.
