Abhishek Sharma bossed Punjab Kings bowlers with yet another explosive half-century as Sunrisers Hyderabad cruised to a four-wicket win in the IPL in Hyderabad on Sunday. Opting to bat on a flat track, Punjab Kings posted an imposing 214/5 riding on Prabhsimran Singh’s 45-ball 71 and skipper Jitesh Sharma’s final over heroics. But SRH looked in complete control of the tall chase after losing Travis Head off the first ball and chased down the target with five balls to spare.

The win took them second place in the table with 17 points from 14 matches as they would need to wait for the result for the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals.

Rajasthan, who have 16 points, can topple SRH for the prized No 2 spot with a win over KKR in Guwahati.

Finishing inside top-two gives the teams an extra chance of making the final.

Abhishek went about his business with utmost nonchalance for a 21-ball fifty, his third half-century of the season.

He smoked six sixes and five boundaries in his knock of 66 from 28 balls to completely tilt the equation in their favour.

Henrich Klaasen (42) Rahul Tripathi (33) and Nitish Reddy (37) made handy contribution in their complete domination act.

Shashank Singh dismissed Abhishek against the run of play with the batter getting beaten by a slower ball and ended up gifting a catch to Shivam Singh at covers.

But with SRH in top gear at 129/2 at the midway stage, the chase was just a formality and Klaasen continued their strong momentum, slamming three fours and two sixes.

Looking to seal the chase, the South African wicketkeeper-batter was bowled by Harpreet Brar in the final over.

But by then, SRH just needed seven runs from 10 balls and Sanvir Singh sealed the issue with a four in the first ball of the final over.

Earlier Arshdeep gave SRH an early blow, cleaning up the dangerous Travis Head for a golden duck.

After losing a wicket of the first ball, SRH showed little sign of panic with Rahul Tripathi seizing the momentum in a 18-ball 33.

Playing only his second match of the season, Tripathi took Rishi Dhawan to clearners with two fours and one six in a row that set the tone for their tall chase.

Abhishek then came on his own, smashing Arshdeep for two fours and one six as the duo continued their assault dealing only in boundaries to cruise to 50 in four overs.

Harshal Patel leaked 22 runs in his first over but returned with a wicket, dismissing Tripathi with a slower ball.

But with 72/2 in five overs, there was no looking back for SRH when Klaasen came to the party to record their third highest powerplay score of 84/2.

The new look opening pair of Prabhsimran and Vidarbha’s Atharva Taide put on 97 runs from 55 balls as PBKS did well to see through the power play without losing a wicket.

Prabhsimran smashed seven fours and four sixes for his 45-ball 71, while Taide will regret missing out on a fifty after being dismissed for a well-made 46 off just 27 balls.

Taide hit five fours and two sixes and after his departure, Prabhsimran in the company of Rilee Rossouw as the duo put together 54 off 32 balls to keep the momentum going in the middle overs.

It looked a one-way traffic at 151/1 in 14 overs when leg-spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth (1/37) dismissed the set batter Prabhsimran off a quicker delivery that took a faint edge and Klaasen did well to take a one-handed catch behind the stumps.

Cummins (1/36) ended his spell taking the wicket Rossouw one run shy of a half-century in the 18th over that left two new batters at the crease — Jitesh Sharma and Ashutosh Sharma.

T Natarajan (2/33) then did well to remove the inform Ashutosh in the penultimate over.

PBKS went on to lose four wickets for 44 runs in five overs before the stand-in skipper Jitesh’s last over assault took them to a fighting total.

Jitesh (32*) finished with two sixes against Nitish Kumar Reddy in a 20-run final over.

KKR Assistant Coach Urges ‘Anti-Skill Innovations’ To Counter Ruthless Batters https://artifex.news/kkr-assistant-coach-urges-anti-skill-innovations-to-counter-ruthless-batters-5533934/ Sat, 27 Apr 2024 08:45:47 +0000 https://artifex.news/kkr-assistant-coach-urges-anti-skill-innovations-to-counter-ruthless-batters-5533934/ Read More “KKR Assistant Coach Urges ‘Anti-Skill Innovations’ To Counter Ruthless Batters” »

Bowlers need to find “innovative ways to execute deliveries with a touch of “anti-skill” to challenge the range-hitting batsmen in the ongoing IPL, reckoned Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate. Punjab Kings successfully mounted the highest run-chase in T20s when they surpassed Kolkata Knight Riders imposing 261/6 with eight balls and eight wickets to spare in their IPL match at Eden Gardens on Friday.

“The game is almost unrecognisable from 10 years ago when you get past 160 you can almost pack your bag and feel you’re going to win the game. Now, you need 160 before the 13th over to have a chance to get a big score,” Doeschate said during the post-match media interaction.

Jonnny Bairstow led the chase with a scintillating 108 off just 48 deliveries after Impact Player Prabhsimran Singh set the tone with a blistering 54 off 20 balls.

After Prabhsimran’s exit, Shashank Singh provided a helping hand with an unbeaten 28-ball 68 in a match that witnessed a record 42 sixes in total.

The former Dutch allrounder, who was part of KKR’s 2014 title winning side, emphasised the need for bowlers to adopt unconventional tactics by bowling “anti-skill,” in order to be successful in the face of aggressive batting strategies.

“You want to bowl with anti-skill. I think, you know, short and wide really works, dragging guys wide and then going straight.” Citing the example of Sam Curran dismissing Phil Salt, he said: “You almost need to catch guys off-guard a little bit like Sam Curran caught Phil Salt off-guard. Set off-side field, he dragged him across and then fire one at leg stump.” “We have to come up with innovative ways. We have to keep changing literally ball by ball. I don’t think you can bowl two balls the same. I don’t think you can bowl bowlers back-to-back anymore unless they really have a grip on the game.

“It’s all in the batter’s favour. The challenge and the upside for bowlers to not punch back is really there,” he added.

The previous record chase in T20 was by South Africa against the West Indies in Centurion in 2023 when they overhauled 259 in 18.5 overs.

In IPL, both the record chases now have come against KKR in the space of 10 days at the same venue of Eden Gardens.

KKR had failed to defend 223/6 with Jos Buttler smashing a 55-ball century to pull off the heist on April 16,.

Dismissing any bowling concern, the KKR assistant coach said there was no point in crying about it as they would have to quickly recover.

“We’re not concerned, but bowling with the new ball and bowling seam, and everything in Kolkata is really tough, and we need to find a way to do better.

“There’s two ways you can look at it. You can step back and say, oh, it’s unfair, we’re bowling machines, or you can say, we are going to find a way and try new things and embrace the challenge “It’s going to be tough, we’re going to get panned all over the show, but you have to find innovative ways. We’ve got four weeks left, it’s going to be around for at least that long, there’s no point crying about it.

“I feel sorry for the bowlers, I think it’s gone even more towards that (batting) side, but those are the realities, and my way of going about it would be to find a way to land a punch back to the batter as quick as possible.” Giving an update on their premier pacer Mitchell Starc, Doeschate said the Aussie left-arm quick may need one or two games to return.

KKR next face Delhi Capitals here on Monday, before taking on Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants in two successive away games.

“As far as I know, he’s very close to being back, which will either be the next game or the game after,” he said.

Impact Sub an opportunity: Prabhsimran

Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran, who came in as an Impact substitute for Arshdeep Singh and blazed his way to his maiden fifty of the season, termed the rule as an opportunity for him.

“I see this as an opportunity for a youngster,” said the diminutive opener.

On the record chase, he said: “We just wanted to cash in on the power play and carry the momentum forward.” For PBKS, the inclusion of Bairstow paid off as he returned to form in style.

“He is such a big player, we all know what he’s capable of. In cricket, you just take one match to recover from your bad form and you saw that today how he dominated the bowlers and struck a century,” added Prabhsimran.

R Sai Kishore starred on a dominant day for the spinners as Gujarat Titans tamed Punjab Kings by three wickets for their fourth win in the 2024 IPL in Mullanpur on Sunday. The spin trio of Sai Kishore (4/33), Rashid Khan (1/15) and Noor Ahmed (2/20) exposed an ill-equipped Punjab Kings with their guile to dismiss them for a below-par 142. Liam Livingstone, who juggles between leg-break and off-spin, struck twice in the middle overs to keep Punjab Kings alive in the game. However, he did not get much support from fellow spinner Harpreet Brar, who leaked 35 in his four overs in a low-scoring affair.

With 42 runs to get off 30 balls, Titans eventually recorded a comfortable win in 19.1 overs courtesy a pressure releasing cameo from Rahul Tewatia (36 not out off 16).

It was Gujarat Titans’ fourth win in eight games while Punjab Kings suffered their sixth loss in eight matches.

Shubman Gill (35 off 29) got tough runs at the top of the order before falling to a mistimed aerial hit off Livingstone. Sai Sudharsan (31 off 33) also found stroke making hard while the dangerous David Miller was Livingstone’s second victim.

Punjab Kings were able to apply the pressure in the middle overs but Tewatia defused their threat with a timely onslaught comprising six boundaries.

Earlier, there was enough help for the spinners and Punjab Kings’ surrender against Sai Kishore and Co made the visitors’ task easier.

Punjab Kings, who have been among the worst performing batting teams in the powerplay this season, made brisk start to reach 45 for no loss in five overs.

However, their innings went downhill thereafter as the spin trio of Sai Kishore, Rashid and Noor exposed the opposition with their guile.

Struggling up till now, Prabhsimran Singh (35 off 21) found some much needed rhythm before he fell in the sixth over, triggering a dramatic collapse.

Soon after guiding Mohit Sharma (2/32) for a six over third man, Prabhsimran charged down the wicket only to be caught behind.

The spin trio then broke the backbone of Punjab batting. Left-arm spinner Sai Kishore, who led Tamil Nadu to the Ranji Trophy semi-final this season, varied his pace effectively to trouble the opposition batters.

Pressure was maintained from other end as well via Noor and Rashid.

Noor’s first victim was Rilee Rossouw (9 off 7), who was trapped lbw while attempting a sweep shot. Skipper Sam Curran (20 off 19) departed in the following over from Rashid and the DRS call that ruled him lbw left him and his opponents surprised.

Livingstone (6 off 9) tried to work a Noor googly towards mid-wicket but leading edge went to Rahul Tewatia stationed at the first slip.

Sai Kishore also got rid of an out of sorts Jitesh Sharma (13 off 12) to make it 86 for five in 12th over.

As often has been the case this season, the uncapped duo of Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma were required to do the heavy lifting but they fell cheaply this time to make matters worse for Punjab.

Thanks to Harpreet Brar (29 off 12), the hosts got past the 140-run mark.
