Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a three-day visit to Australia, met the country’s Leader of the Opposition, Angus Taylor, on Friday (July 10, 2026) and discussed bilateral ties, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

“They held productive discussions on the growing India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The warm and cordial meeting reflected the strong bipartisan support in Australia for deepening ties with India,” the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on X.

Sharing details of the interaction, Modi also posted on the microblogging platform.

“Met Mr. Angus Taylor, Leader of the Opposition of Australia. We had an engaging conversation on the growing strength of India-Australia ties and the many opportunities ahead. I deeply value the warmth and broad support that our partnership enjoys across Australia,” he wrote.

The Prime Minister landed in Australia on July 8 after completing his visit to Indonesia. From here, he is scheduled to leave for New Zealand — the last leg of his six-day, three-nation tour.

During his three-day visit to Australia, the two countries sealed a raft of landmark pacts spanning civil nuclear energy, maritime security and critical minerals sectors.

PM Modi held summit talks with his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, and both leaders reinforced the vital role of the bilateral partnership in ensuring a peaceful Indo-Pacific.

A major highlight of the summit talks between the two leaders was their focus on significantly ramping up defence ties, especially in the maritime domain.

An agreement on civil nuclear energy to facilitate the commercial supply of uranium from Australia to India to fuel New Delhi’s nuclear power projects was sealed after over two years of negotiations.

In another significant decision, India and Australia decided to work expeditiously to firm up the proposed Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement as well as a bilateral investment protection framework to further enhance the trade and investment relations.

A joint declaration on defence and security cooperation, a maritime security collaboration roadmap, a joint statement on energy security, and a partnership for cyber, critical technologies and supply chains were among 18 pacts signed following summit talks between the two prime ministers.

PM Modi also pitched for early finalisation of the proposed India-Australia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) as it will further accelerate bilateral trade and investment ties.

The Prime Minister also addressed an Indian diaspora event, ‘Melbourne meets Modi’, also attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The declaration, adopted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, outlines an ambitious roadmap to elevate defence ties through closer strategic consultations, enhanced interoperability between the armed forces, expanded military exercises and greater collaboration in defence science, technology and industrial supply chains.

In a statement released by the office of the Australian Prime Minister, it was mentioned that under the declaration, the two sides agreed to hold regular consultations on defence-related developments in the Indo-Pacific affecting their shared interests, increase the complexity of bilateral and multilateral military exercises, accelerate efforts to improve interoperability and information sharing between their armed forces, and expand aircraft deployments from each other’s territories.

The agreement also envisages deeper personnel exchanges through education, training and liaison appointments, while exploring opportunities to cooperate in recruiting skilled personnel for their respective defence workforces.

Recognising the strategic importance of the maritime domain, India and Australia agreed to enhance the depth, sophistication and frequency of maritime security cooperation. The two countries will implement an India-Australia Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap to strengthen coordination across the Indian Ocean and the wider Indo-Pacific.

The declaration also places significant emphasis on defence industry cooperation. Both sides committed to encouraging greater integration between their defence industries, building resilient supply chains and expanding collaboration in defence innovation, advanced science and technology.

The leaders noted that the new declaration builds upon the India-Australia Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation signed in 2009 and complements existing institutional mechanisms, including the Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue, the 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial Dialogue, and the Defence Ministers’ Dialogue.

Expressing concern over growing geostrategic uncertainty and threats to regional peace and stability, India and Australia called for disputes to be resolved peacefully, without the threat or use of force or coercion, and in accordance with international law.

The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific underpinned by international law, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and adherence to the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), including freedom of navigation and overflight.

They also reiterated support for regional institutions, including the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), ASEAN-led regional architecture and the Pacific Islands Forum, describing them as key platforms for addressing regional challenges.

“Thousands of people turned out to receive PM Modi in Sydeny,” said Milton Dick.

New Delhi:

Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia this year, politician and the 32nd Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, Milton Dick has said that the reception he got in Sydney was of a rockstar one.

Praising the popularity of PM Modi across the globe, Australian speaker Milton Dick, in an exclusive interview with ANI on Thursday, said, “Our PM (Anthony Albanese) visited here, and indeed Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Australia earlier this year. I can’t underscore just how important those visits are. We have seen our PM visit twice and a very successful visit by PM Modi to Australia. In my lifetime, I have never seen such a response or such avidly pouring support for a world leader and it was such a privilege for our country to host the Prime Minister.”

“The reception he received in Sydney was really one of a rockstar. Thousands of people turned out. And, if you go to Australia, there are 1 million people of Indian heritage…Not only does that make our country stronger but it makes our link even stronger between India and Australia,” he said.

Speaking further on PM Modi’s popularity as a world leader, he added, “I think the Prime Minister has worked hard on building those relationships… even our Prime Minister values those friendships as well. I guess it is about ensuring over the last year to year and a half where we have seen ministers visiting from here to India. This is not my first visit to India and I came to India as a newly elected member of the parliament in 2018. It was a very visit for me as a parliamentarian and it shaped my views and values about the Indian economy and the Indian community. And now as the 32nd speaker of the House of Representatives to lead a delegation to India has been the honour of a lifetime.”

During his three-day visit to Australia in May this year, PM Modi held bilateral talks with his Australian counterpart Albanese and also addressed a historic community programme. He also met several business leaders and eminent Australians. Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney Olympic Park, the venue for the community event, saw thousands of overseas Indians.

At the community event, Australian PM Albanese compared PM Modi’s mass appeal with that of the famed rockstar Bruce Springsteen, who incidentally is famed among his fans as “The Boss.”

The Australia-India relationship is already strong, but both saw the potential for growth and an opportunity for a better future.

PM Modi also thanked the people of Australia, the Government of Australia and his Australian counterpart for the warm welcome and hospitality. PM Modi reassured that the two leaders would work together to strengthen the friendship of the two countries.

The Australian speaker also spoke about the G20 Summit which was conducted under India’s Presidency this year.

He said, “I will be discussing important issues as part of presiding officers of the G20 which India has done a brilliant job by hosting this year.”

On the question related to SDGs and climate, he said, “The title of the G20 agenda is one earth, one family, one future —and I think the unification that we have seen is a result of the G20 conversations that we could walk at the beginning to now, have really dealt with really some important issues…Australia places great importance on G20.”

Emphasising on strong bilateral partnership between India and Australia, the Australian politician said that both countries share a love of Democracy, and the ties are emerging stronger than ever.

“Australia and India share a love of Democracy and our parliaments are getting stronger and stronger all the time. We will be looking forward to meeting with Speaker Om Birla– a speaker of great respect around the region and across the globe…Our relationship has never been stronger or I believe never deeper in its engagement,” he said.

Furthermore, he also said that the people-to-people ties between India and Australia are also at their best and that Australia is open to more business with India as the future is strong in the region.

“I think if you look at one specific…– the economic agreement that was signed last year, and the ongoing work that is ongoing between the two countries around the comprehensive free trade agreement…as negotiations continue…we will see sooner rather than later…We certainly are open for more business in Australia with India…we know the future is strong here in this region and those economic partnerships continue to strengthen the people-to-people relationships,” he added.

Notably, the Presiding officers of G20 member countries and invited countries have begun to arrive in New Delhi for the opening of the 9th edition of the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20 Summit).

The Australian speaker is also in the national capital to participate in the Summit.

The P20 Summit brings together speakers/heads of legislatures of G20 member countries and guest countries to explore how Parliaments might effectively advance global governance, bringing a parliamentary perspective to governance challenges and solutions towards addressing them.
