Piyush Chawla, the veteran India leg-spinner, believes left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav is in prime form and is ready to make a substantial impact for the Rohit Sharma-led side in their 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup semifinal clash against England at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday night. After not featuring in Group A matches due to fast-bowling friendly conditions in New York, Kuldeep has yielded fruitful returns to be India’s controller of proceedings in the middle overs, picking seven wickets at an average of 10.71, and economy rate of just 6.25 in India’s Super Eights games in the Caribbean.

With the venue in Guyana expected to aid spinners, Kuldeep is expected to bring his adaptability to the fore and lead India’s charge against England through his subtle changes in pace, variations and using the crease well to bamboozle the batters.

“Kuldeep Yadav’s resurgence has been one of the greatest comebacks in the history of Indian cricket. His absence in the 2022 semi-final was a significant miss for India, but this time, he’s in prime form and ready to make a substantial impact. Kuldeep’s unorthodox left-arm wrist spin and the ability to extract turn and bounce, coupled with his deceptive variations, can be a game-changer in the middle overs,” said Chawla, an expert in ‘Caught and Bold’ show on Disney Hotstar, to IANS.

Chawla also noted that Kuldeep has fared well against England on various occasions at the international level. He had also picked a six-fer against England in the Nottingham ODI in 2018, as well as five-fer in the Manchester T20I in the same tour. More recently, he took a five-fer in the final Test at Dharamshala, as India won the series 4-1.

Kuldeep also has a good record against England skipper Jos Buttler, who he has dismissed three times in T20s. More recently, in IPL 2024, Kuldeep had trapped Buttler lbw on reverse-sweep during the Delhi Capitals-Rajasthan Royals game at Jaipur in March.

In the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup game at Lucknow, the left-arm wrist spinner produced a magic moment when he pitched one outside the off-stump with a flatter trajectory and got the ball to turn sharply by nearly a mile to castle captain Jos Buttler through the gate with precision.

“He also has a good record playing against England. In the upcoming semi-final, Kuldeep will be crucial in disrupting England’s aggressive batting mantra. He will be India’s trump card against England’s explosive batting order. Given his current form and confidence, Kuldeep Yadav is poised to be a significant threat, making the middle overs a challenging period for England batsmen,” added Chawla, a member of India’s 2011 ODI World Cup winning team.

From England’s bowling perspective, leg-spinner Adil Rashid shapes up as a crucial figure in controlling the middle overs. In the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final meet between England and India at Adelaide, Rashid picked 1-20 in his four overs, including taking out an in-form Suryakumar Yadav, as Buttler & Co won by ten wickets.

Chawla reckons Rashid, who has picked nine wickets in the ongoing tournament with his immaculate control on pace and variations, will be an important bowler for England to control the middle overs and put the pressure on India in the highly-anticipated semi-final clash.

“Adil Rashid has been a crucial component for England in the middle overs. Rashid’s variations, including his googly and subtle changes in pace, makes him a formidable threat on the West Indian pitches. In the upcoming semi-final against India, Rashid’s role will be pivotal for England to win.

“If he can maintain his discipline and keep the pressure on, he could very well be the key for England putting pressure on Indian batsmen. His knack for breaking partnerships is especially valuable in the middle overs, a phase where the game often shifts decisively. England will be counting on Rashid to deliver a spell that not only controls the run flow but also provides breakthroughs at crucial moments,” he concluded.

India’s all-round performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup is earning them praise from all quarters with former India spinner Piyush Chawla calling the current bowling line-up “one of all-time great” as they prepare for the Super Eight challenge. Chawla asserted that India’s bowling attack has transformed in recent years to become top-notch in the world. The veteran bowler credited the pace quartet of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya along with spinners Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel for making it a great bowling unit.

Indian bowlers have stepped up to the occasion in the T20 World Cup so far in the low-scoring encounters including the mega clash against Pakistan.

“Over the past few years, India’s bowling attack has truly transformed. We now have one of the most complete and formidable bowling units in the world that has provided balance to the side allowing the batsmen with more freedom to play their natural game. In the game against Pakistan, our batting collapsed and it was our bowlers who got them over the line.

“There have been many such occasions where our bowlers stepped up and contributed more than our batters. With the lethal pace quad of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh and top-notch spinners like Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel this is surely one of all time great bowling attack of India.” said Chawla on the ‘Caught & Bold’ show on Disney Hotstar.

With three wins and a washout against Canada, India topped Group A with seven points and will face Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Australia in the Super Eight.

In their first Super Eight clash, Men in Blue will take on Afghanistan in Barbados on Thursday, June 20.

Mumbai Indians (MI) spinner Piyush Chawla is hopeful of extending his playing career in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after his exploits in the ongoing edition. After going unsold during the IPL 2022 auction, Chawla was picked up by MI ahead of IPL 2023. He picked up 22 wickets last season, and has 10 is as many games this term. Chawla’s form has been one of the positives for MI this season, with the five-time champions already out of the playoffs race. However, it os highly unlikely that MI will retain him going into the IPL 2025 mega auction.

On being was asked if the fans will get to see him playing next season, Chawla came up with a cheeky reply, leaving the journalists in splits.

“You tell me, if I should be playing with the way I’m bowling? If you have given your permission, of course I will see you somewhere next time,” Chawla said during the post-match press conference.

Chawla has played 191 matches in the IPL for four different franchises including  Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and MI.

The 35-year-old surpassed Dwayne Bravo earlier this season to become the second all-time leading wicket-taker in the tournament.

He has picked up 189 wickets and was part of the KKR team which won the IPL in 2014.

Chawla picked two wickets on Saturday but MI went down fighting against KKR in a rain-hit game at the Eden Gardens.

Speaking on the defeat, Chawla suggested MI failed to gather momentum, while also praising KKR spinnners Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine for turning the tide.

“T20 is about momentum, and we didn’t get that momentum right from the beginning. Some days we bowled well, but our batting didn’t click, and sometimes our batters did well, but the bowlers ended up leaking runs,” he said

“As a unit, we have failed in a few games, and we have to accept that as a team. We have a brilliant lineup, but things didn’t fall into place. Today also, we started off brilliantly, but that spell of (Sunil) Narine and Varun (Chakravarthy) actually made the difference. You have to give credit to their bowlers,” Chawla added.

Suryakumar Yadav’s special hundred after a disciplined bowling effort set up Mumbai Indians’ seven-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 on Monday. Suryakumar smashed 102 not out off 51 balls for his second IPL hundred, taking his team to an emphatic win in 17.2 overs. SRH had recovered to post 173 for eight. The win lifted Mumbai Indians from the bottom of the points table to the ninth spot while SRH, despite the loss, remained fourth with 12 points in 11 games. Joining forces inside the powerplay with MI left reeling at 31 for three, the pair of Suryakumar and Tilak Varma (37 not out off 32) did a superb recovery job with 143-run unbeaten stand to script a comprehensive victory. Suryakumar’s sensational knock included 12 fours and half a dozen sixes.

For that matter, MI could have been reduced to 31/4 had a Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivery in the fifth over not pitched outside the leg stump with the veteran seamer pinning Varma in front of the wickets.

Ishan Kishan (9) perished early once again while Naman Dhir (0) endured a nine-ball duck.

With their backs against the wall, Suryakumar picked Marco Jansen to attack as he collected 22 runs off the seventh over with two sixes and two fours to begin his job.

But shortly after he completed his fifty off 30 balls, Suryakumar was seen stretching and wincing in pain while looking to manage a strain, presumably to his groin — one of the reasons why he missed cricket for nearly four months from late last year.

However, to his credit, the world No 1 T20 batter hung around till the end to take MI over the line as he finished the game with a flurry of boundaries — two sixes and as many fours off his last four balls.

Apart from Suryakumar’s struggles while batting, the decline in Rohit Sharma’s form also came to the fore with the India captain mistiming one to be dismissed for a mere four — his fourth score in single digits this IPL in last five outings.

Earlier in the first half, Pandya struck form before the T20 World Cup while veteran Chawla also bagged three wickets as Mumbai Indians restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad for a below-par total.

Pandya found rhythm and momentum to return 4-0-31-3 while Chawla (4-0-33-3) produced an impactful performance to trouble the SRH batters.

However, to his credit, SRH skipper Pat Cummins chipped in with a 17-ball 35 (2x4s, 2x6s) late in the innings to take them past the 150-run mark.

In complete contrast to last time these teams met earlier in this IPL when SRH hammered 277/3, their usually free-flowing batters struggled for momentum and lack of initiative meant they could never really trouble the Mumbai bowlers.

Travis Head top scored with 48 while skipper Pat Cummins made a quick 17-ball 35 not out.

Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered their 8th loss of IPL 2024 on Friday, going down at the expense of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium. Chasing a below-par 170, Mumbai lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 145 off 18.5 overs. The win saw KKR end their 12-year winless run at MI’s den. The defeat, on the other hand, leaves MI all but out of IPL 2024. After the match, MI spinner Piyush Chawla shared a fitness update on former captain Rohit Sharma, who was not named in the playing XI but came out to bat during the chase.

Chawla revealed that Rohit had some stiffness on his back so they decided not to risk him during the fielding.

“Rohit Sharma just had a mild back-stiffness so it was a just precautionary thing,” Chawla said in the post-match press conference.

Speaking on the defeat against KKR, Chawla said that it was just a one-off day as the team was not able to click.

“If you talk about the wicket, it was good, but sticky at the start and credit goes to KKR bowlers, they bowled really well. Sometimes it happens that things are not going your way and the other team comes and bowls in really good areas. It was just one off day,” he added.

Chawla further said that the Mumbai-based franchise will now play for their pride and reputation in the remaining games of the 17th edition of the cash-rich league.

“We are going to play for our pride and reputation because sometimes you enter the field you never know whether you are going to qualify or not. You have to play for your name and that’s what we are playing for,” the former India cricketer asserted.

Chawla said that T20 cricket is all about momentum and that is what the team hasn’t got so far in the ongoing tournament.

“As a unit, I don’t say it is just about batting or bowling, it’s just the complete unit. You must have heard that T20 cricket is about momentum and just that we didn’t get going into this season. It can happen to any team, it’s not that happening to us,” the leg-spinner stated.

As the countdown for the ODI World Cup begins, the Indian cricket team is fortunate to have its skipper Rohit Sharma back in full form. Having put in some valuable performances in the Asia Cup 2023, Rohit seems to be getting back to his best, in time for the World Cup. Seeing the Hitman go berserk while playing some effortless shots, however, many fans wonder how he does what he does. Veteran Indian spinner Piyush Chawla, explaining Rohit Sharma’s brilliance, labelled his playing style “lazy elegance”.

In a chat on Star Sports, Chawla said that the way Rohit regains form just when a big tournament is approaching proves his identity as a big player.

“This is the identity of a big player, just as we approach a big tournament, he comes back into form in some way or the other, and he has shown this at the Asia Cup. This is the Rohit Sharma we all know. He is not trying to hit the ball hard; it’s just lazy elegance. He is focusing on timing the ball, and from the outside, it looks so fun to watch because he makes batting look pretty easy.

“And these are good signs for Indian cricket because when your openers are giving you a good start, you get a bigger score, and it helps the middle order. And it is very important that when your middle order is good, then if your openers give you a good start, it becomes very good for the team.”

Chawla also had a few inputs on Virat Kohli‘s struggles against left-arm spinners. Against Sri Lanka, the India great fell to Dunith Wellalake, a left-arm spinner.

“See, that depends on the day; if he really had a problem against left-arm spinners, and you’ve played so many matches, you will get out against someone or the other. If every team thought this way, they would include a left-arm spinner in their team always. But even in the shot he got out to recently (against Sri Lanka), it’s one of his scoring shots; the ball came on late from the pitch and he got out.

“Generally, that goes between square leg and mid-wicket, and he scores a lot of runs like that. And if we talk about him having a problem against a left-arm spinner, then I don’t think he would have scored 47 centuries in One Day cricket,” he stressed.

As skipper Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India’s squad for the ODI World Cup 2023, only 15 players got the nod while a number of those who were in contention, were left with broken hearts. Yuzvendra Chahal and Sanju Samson were among those players whose absence pinched many fans while the inclusion of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer didn’t convince everyone. Veteran Indian spinner Piyush Chawla said that while there’s plenty of talk on the role KL Rahul will play for the team, even Shreyas Iyer’s spot should be questioned.

After Ishan Kishan‘s heroics took India to 266 runs in the Asia Cup match against Pakistan, many feel that the young wicket-keeper batter has cemented his spot in the team. In the middle-order the experts feel there will be a fierce fight between him and KL Rahul. But, Chawla feels even Iyer’s place in the team should be discussed.

“We are talking about both of them, why not Shreyas Iyer? Shreyas Iyer’s place should also be questioned. Ishan cannot remain in the reserves now because of the way he has batted in the top order,” Chawla was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda.

“People had a question about how he would bat in the middle order and the way he batted in the middle order after coming into bat in a tough situation, he is going through good form and he solves the problem of the absence of a left-hander in the middle order, which we often talk about.”

For Chawla Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul look like certain picks in the middle-order while Shreyas Iyer might not be an automatic selection.

“So he is straightaway a walk-in for me. If we talk about KL Rahul, his track record is so good and he has done so well over the years,” the spinner said.

With Rahul available for selection from the Super-4 stage of the Asia Cup, it would be interesting to see what sort of composition the team management opts for in the middle-order.
