Scientists have cast doubt on the reliability of America’s most celebrated rodent forecaster — whose apparent knack of predicting how long winter will last forms a hallowed tradition in the United States.

Punxsutawney Phil, made famous by the 1993 film “Groundhog Day,” attracts thousands of onlookers every February 2 to the Pennsylvania town that he takes his name from.

The US state’s tradition of using a large rodent to predict the seasons dates back to the Pennsylvania Dutch belief that if a groundhog left its burrow and saw its shadow, it would scurry back inside and winter would go on for six more weeks.

But professional forecasters have warned ahead of Phil’s appearance this Sunday that his prediction is likely to be way off the mark.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has concluded that only 35 percent of Phil’s forecasts have proved to be accurate — placing him at a lowly 17th compared to other rodent forecasters.

Staten Island Chuck, a New York-based groundhog, tops the rankings with an impressive 85 percent accuracy rate on his forecasts.

Phil and his predecessors, also called Phil, have been forecasting since 1887.

Washington:

Having survived two assassination attempts this summer, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Sunday suggested that he would not mind if somebody took a shot at him through fake news.

Addressing his supporters at an election rally at Lititz in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, Trump generated another controversy by saying that he should not have left the White House after his defeat in the 2020 elections.

“I shouldn’t have left, I mean, honestly. We did so well,” Trump said in his speech but immediately changed the topic. “So now, every polling booth has hundreds of lawyers standing there.”

Trump had refused to accept the results of the November 2020 elections. His supporters ended up attacking the US Capitol on January 6, which is considered to be the worst day in American democracy.

The former president, who is now 78, expressed frustration over the enhanced security around him after his recent assassination bids.

“I have a piece of glass over here. I don’t have a piece of glass there. And I have this piece of glass here. But all we have really over here is the fake news, right? And to get me, somebody would have to shoot through the fake news. I don’t mind that so much. I don’t mind. I don’t mind that,” Trump said, referring the thick bullet proof glass around him and the gap in his protective glass.

“I have a piece of glass here. The problem with that glass is it’s – I don’t look great on television when you have a four-inch piece of glass that a howitzer can’t go through. No, when you see yourself on television, you say, boy, you’re really not very recognizable, to be honest with you, which is good. But here’s the problem. So I have glass here. I have glass here. Now, I’m not worried about this. Look, what do I have? A couple of people. And they’re friends, generally. There are a couple of people I don’t like in that group, but that’s like,” he said.

His remarks were criticized by the Democrats. Harris-Walz Director of Rapid Response Ammar Moussa said as Harris spent today at church in Detroit, talking to voters about her vision to lift up all Americans, Donald Trump was busy violating the Ninth Commandment.

“Trump is spending the closing days of his campaign angry and unhinged, lying about the election being stolen because he’s worried he will lose. The American people deserve a leader who tells the truth and will walk into the Oval Office focused on them – that’s Vice President Harris,” Moussa said.

Steven Cheung, Trump Campaign Communications Director, said Trump was talking about the two assassination attempts on his own life, including one that came within 1/4 of an inch from killing him, something that the media constantly talks and jokes about.

“The President’s statement about protective glass placement has nothing to do with the Media being harmed, or anything else. It was about threats against him that were spurred on by dangerous rhetoric from Democrats,” he said.

“In fact, President Trump was stating that the Media was in danger, in that they were protecting him and, therefore, were in great danger themselves, and should have had a glass protective shield, also. There can be no other interpretation of what was said. He was actually looking out for their welfare, far more than his own!” Cheung said.

New Delhi:

Votes in the US state of Pennsylvania hold the power to make or break the chances of entering the White House for both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Pennsylvania holds 19 electoral votes. It was pivotal for the Democrats win in the 2020 election.

Here’s your 10-point cheatsheet to this big story

  1. Formally called the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Democrats (blues) have enjoyed good strength in Pennsylvania since 1992, except in 2016 when the Republican (reds) leader Donald Trump was elected President.
  2. Not getting big numbers in Pennsylvania could worsen Kamala Harris’ chances as no Democrat has entered the White House without Pennsylvania since 1948.
  3. There are six lakh Asian-Americans in Pennsylvania, with Indian-Americans comprising the largest group. The Trump and Harris campaigns have acknowledged they face the toughest challenge in this state.
  4. The major concerns in Pennsylvania include rising inflation and pressure on cost of living. For some time grocery prices have been rising the fastest in Pennsylvania.
  5. Though Pennsylvania is considered a swing state with 19 electoral votes, it is no longer what it used to be a century ago when it had 38 electoral votes, double of what it has now. Many industrial states in the northern parts of the US have seen people migrate to other areas. Pennsylvania was no exception.
  6. To win the US elections, a candidate needs 270 of the electoral college votes. The results in seven battleground states of Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia will decide who will be the next President.
  7. Along with Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia have an inordinate influence on deciding the winner because unlike the other states which are firmly with either party, these states can go either way – with the reds or the blues.
  8. Donald Trump has been talking about illegal migration, crime, bringing back manufacturing and jobs, and inflation while also going off the teleprompter to add impromptu comments. In Pennsylvania, he mostly dumped the machines and went extempore.
  9. A day before the election, the presidential race appears to be hurtling toward a photo finish, with the final set of polls by The New York Times and Siena College finding Kamala Harris gaining new strength in North Carolina and Georgia.
  10. Pennsylvania is also known as a “keystone state”, to mean a central, wedge-shaped stone which holds all the other stones of a structure in place to form an arch. In early America, Pennsylvania played a vital geographic and strategic role in holding together the states of the newly formed Union.

The story so far:

Around 24.4 crore people are eligible to vote for the U.S. presidential election slated for November 5. In 2020, two-thirds of the eligible voters voted. The next President of the U.S. will be decided less by these national numbers than by a few thousand voters in some key places, which are called battleground or swing States, thanks to the unique features of the country’s electoral system.

What transpired in the last two elections?

The last two elections of 2016 and 2020 demonstrated the outsize impact of the swing factor in several States, even as the country became more polarised. In 2020, President Joe Biden had a national lead of around 70 lakh votes over Donald Trump, but what mattered more were the small margins with which he won key States. Of around 67 lakh votes cast in Pennsylvania, Mr. Biden led over Mr. Trump by 81,660; in Michigan, he had 1.54 lakh more, of the total 54 lakh polled; in Wisconsin, Mr. Biden led by just 20,682 votes in a total of more than 32 lakh votes.

Editorial | Neck and neck: On the U.S. presidential election

In 2016, Mr. Trump had trailed his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton by two percentage points, which was in excess of 20 lakh votes, but he could still emerge as the winner because he won key swing States. For instance, he won Pennsylvania by 44,292 votes of the total 61.7 lakh votes polled; Wisconsin by 22,748 of the 30 lakh votes; and Michigan, by 10,704 of the 48 lakh votes polled.

How is the winner chosen?

The winner of the U.S. presidential contest is selected not by a majority of national popular votes, but by a majority in the electoral college of 538, which is 270. Members of the electoral college are apportioned between the States. Most U.S. States have a “winner-takes-it-all” system that allots all electors to the candidate who gets more popular votes. So, whether a candidate has one or one million votes more than their opponent in California, for instance, all 54 electoral college votes of the State, will be awarded to him or her.

Similarly, all 19 electoral college votes of Pennsylvania will be awarded to the winner of the popular votes within that State, regardless of the margin. This system could create the anomaly of a candidate winning the election, without winning more popular votes than the opponent, nationally. That is also why the main opponents this time, Mr. Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris, are trying to turn the battleground States in their favour in the last lap of campaigning ahead of election day.

Which are the key States that will play a role in picking the winner?

Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, and North Carolina are the battleground States of 2024; and the contest between Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris is a dead heat, going by all opinion polls. The average polling error for more than five decades in the U.S. is 3.4%. In all the seven swing States, in nearly all the polls, the leading candidate has a lead well within this margin. Like the last two elections, the margins could be very narrow and these States will decide who will be the President for the next four years. It is also possible that most of these States could swing to either side, as it happened in the last two elections, rather than being evenly divided between the two.

Even a minor swing among significant voting blocs in these States could turn the tide either way. Both candidates are trying to tailor their messages, particularly targeting these States. For instance, Latinos make up nearly a quarter of Arizona’s voters. That possibly explains Mr. Trump’s recent attempts to portray his opponent as being disrespectful of the Catholic church. In Georgia, Black votes count considerably, and Mr. Trump has been trying to mobilise them behind his anti-immigration politics. Latest polling figures show Mr. Trump gaining more ground among Latinos and Blacks. Michigan, a State that turned Republican in 2016 and Democrat in 2020, has around two lakh Muslim voters. Democrats, and Ms. Harris, face a crisis of credibility among them, against the backdrop of the conflict in West Asia. They may not vote for Mr. Trump but could turn indifferent towards Ms. Harris. Mr. Trump had won North Carolina in 2016 and 2020, but Ms. Harris is making some new inroads, according to polls.

In the last stretch, there will be further concentration of firepower by both sides on the small numbers that count as big in the elections. Catching the swing voters in these States is what both candidates are focussing on now.

Erie, Pennsylvania:

The command center for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign in one of the most hotly contested counties in the most important election battleground state of Pennsylvania sits in a small room of a strip-mall office rented by Erie County’s Republican Party.

The otherwise sleepy office comes to life a couple times a week when the two-person staff hosts the volunteer network the campaign calls Trump Force 47.

A few miles away in a bustling office in downtown Erie, paid staff and volunteers on Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign make phone calls, press new campaign buttons and organize watch parties and phone banking. A chalkboard keeps score of door-knocking: 12,000 households so far toward a goal of 20,000, or nearly one of five in the county.

With just four weeks before the November 5 presidential election, the battle for Erie County – a historically must-win county in a must-win state – demonstrates the urgency of identifying and contacting individual voters in a campaign that remains stubbornly close, according to campaign staff and volunteers for both campaigns.

While the Harris campaign is using its sizable cash advantage and newfound enthusiasm to build a towering ground-game operation aimed at mobilizing supporters and identifying new voters, the Trump campaign is focused on infrequent voters and betting on a voter registration drive that has cut into the traditional Democratic advantage.

Harris and the Democratic Party raised $361 million in August compared to Trump and the Republicans’ $130 million, and she spent nearly three times as much as her opponent that month, federal financial disclosures show.

Reuters interviewed some 40 supporters, campaign staff, volunteers and voters who said that Harris’ ground game advantage could test whether brick and mortar campaigns still prove useful in campaigns that are defined by viral moments, influencers and social media ad wars.

“Trump and his team appear to be banking on the power of his personal pull,” said Chris Borick, a pollster and political science professor at Pennsylvania’s Muhlenberg College.

“Harris and the Democrats are investing deeply in a more traditional ground game here and thus this election will be a test of dramatically different strategies.”

The volunteers and voters also described rising tensions as the campaigns dump millions of dollars on divisive digital and television ads, robo calls, text messages and door-knocking.

“I’ve been pretty bombarded with mail, phone calls and texts,” said Erin Miller, 38, a bartender and mother of six who recently moved to the state from Colorado and has yet to vote locally in a presidential election, making her a prime target for the campaigns.

With 19 electoral votes, Pennsylvania is the biggest prize among the battleground states that will decide the election.

Erie County, a blue-collar region with 177,000 registered voters, has voted with the winning presidential candidate for the last four elections.

Biden won Erie County in 2020 by less than 1,500 votes, or 1.03 percentage points, an even closer margin than his 1.2 percentage point win in Pennsylvania overall. In 2016, Trump won Erie County over Hillary Clinton by fewer than 2,000 votes.

The Harris campaign and the Democratic Party have three offices in Erie County and eight paid staff along with more than 300 volunteers.

“It’s the bellwether part of it. It’s the mere fact that this particular city, in this particular state, could ultimately decide who’s president and they know it,” said Marie Troyer, 60, a retired teacher who got a job on the campaign answering phones and managing volunteers.

BOOTS ON THE GROUND

Despite the ground game advantage, the Harris campaign has found it hard work to mobilize Black voters who make up about 16% of the city’s population, especially Black men, according to Reuters interviews.

Howard Pratchett, 48, a barber, said he plans to vote for Trump because he is more “factual” than Harris. “We don’t care about LBGT rights. We don’t care about, you know, abortion rights. We’re not worried about that. They don’t offer anything to the straight Black male voters,” Pratchett said.

Monty Davis, 51, who runs a local youth program, said he appreciates President Joe Biden’s efforts to lower costs and plans to vote for Harris. But he warned the energy among the Black community is not as high as it was with Presidents Barack Obama or Biden.

“It’s just not that intense,” Davis said.

The Trump campaign’s two paid staffers in Erie also oversee two other counties, according to Erie County Republican Chairman Tom Eddy.

The Trump campaign and local Republicans declined to say how many volunteers they have in the county, but local officials conceded they have fewer than the Democrats.

As in other battleground states, the Trump camp is relying on deep-pocketed outside groups – like billionaire Elon Musk’s America PAC – and a much looser network of supporters and volunteers to mobilize voters.

Since 2015, when Trump emerged as a leader in Republican politics, Republicans and outside groups have significantly narrowed the Democratic advantage in voting registrations in Erie and in Pennsylvania overall.

In 2015, Democrats enjoyed a roughly 33,000 voter registration advantage in Erie County, but that has been whittled down to 10,000, according to current county election records.

Statewide, Democrats have a roughly 338,400 voter registration advantage over Republicans, down from the commanding 892,624 advantage Democrats held in 2016, state voter data shows.

Sam Talerico, the county’s Democratic chairman, conceded the Republican surge in registrations is unwelcome news.

“We certainly don’t like to see those registration numbers converge, but that’s the bad news. The good news is, you know, I still think we have an advantage with independents turning our way, and that’s making a difference,” he said.

Republicans also are banking on Trump’s frequent visits – five rallies over three campaigns in Erie, including two visits this election. The rallies represent mobilizing opportunities as organizers register voters and collect cell phone numbers and email information.

Harris will make her first visit to Erie on October 14. Her running mate Tim Walz visited in September.

And then there’s Trump Force 47, the volunteer network that knocks on the doors of infrequent voters to determine whether they plan to vote, and for whom. Volunteers win awards, such as hats and sweaters, for knocking on more doors.

“We are not trying to persuade anyone. It’s more just that the campaign is trying to make sure that people who are already inclined to vote for Trump get out and vote,” said volunteer Justin Berkheimer, 39, who works at a group home for people with mental disabilities.

A HEATED CAMPAIGN

For both campaigns the intensity of the fight for Erie has spilled over into threats, antagonism and uncomfortable conversations, volunteers said.

A half-dozen die-hard Trump fans told Reuters they are uncomfortable being seen as public supporters of the former president.

That’s a departure from 2016 when Erie was flooded with Trump signs, according to local officials and volunteers.

Patrick Fuller, 50, a credit union employee who said he has knocked on more than 2,000 doors for Trump this election, said he leaves his red MAGA hat at home to avoid confrontation.

“A lot of people are afraid to get involved, because they are afraid that somebody will swear at them or threaten them,” Fuller said.

Other volunteers said they had their cars spit on for displaying Trump bumper stickers.

County Democrats said they ran into tensions when they pushed into rural areas, opening up a satellite office in a part of the county that Trump won with 72% of the vote in 2020.

Volunteer Kelly Chelton, 62, described a man lunging at a volunteer because he was angry about the large wooden sign reading: “Christians Against Trump.”

“He came in looking for a fight,” Chelton said. “He asked how do you know that Trump isn’t Christian.” She added: “He was just screaming and yelling.”

The county party later installed video security cameras, Chelton said.

Elon Musk said he would attend a rally that Donald Trump is holding on Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, the setting of the first assassination attempt on the former president.

In a post late Thursday New York time on his social platform X, the billionaire wrote, “I will be there to support!” in response to the Republican presidential nominee’s post about his return to the site.

Musk, the chief executive officer of Tesla Inc. and SpaceX, has already committed millions to Trump’s third White House bid, with a super political action committee he started spending $71 million mostly on canvassing and field operations to get out the vote.

Trump’s rally at fairgrounds in Butler, Pennsylvania, comes exactly one month before Election Day. At a rally there in July, a gunman’s bullet grazed his ear. The gunman killed Corey Comperatore, a firefighter, as he shielded his family, and gravely wounding two others.

The image of a bloodied Trump standing up after the shooting, fist pumped and mouthing “Fight!” has become one of the most iconic images of the campaign, emblazoned upon T-shirts, vehicles and splashed across social media.

Donald Trump recalled the moment he was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania.

New Delhi:

Donald Trump recalled the moment he was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania last month and narrated the events that followed, during a live conversation with X owner Elon Musk.

Trump, who survived the assassination bid but was left with a bloodied ear, said he’s “more of a believer” now.

“I knew immediately that it was a bullet. I knew immediately that it was at the ear…,” he said as over a million listeners joined to listen to the 78-year-old former president.

“For those people that don’t believe in God, I think we all have to start thinking about that,” he added.

He also pointed out that he turned his head at the “perfect angle”, which saved his life.

“You know, I’m a believer. Now I’m more of a believer, I think. And a lot of people have said that to me. A lot of great people have said that to me, actually. But it was, it was amazing that I happened to be turned just at that perfect angle,” the Republican presidential candidate said.

The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, wounded two rally-goers and killed another before he was shot dead by the Secret Service.

Elon Musk’s much-trailed interview with Donald Trump got off to a rocky start this morning after what the tech entrepreneur said was a cyberattack on his microblogging platform.

“There appears to be a massive DDOS attack on X. Working on shutting it down,” Musk, the world’s richest man, wrote earlier on the platform, formerly known as Twitter.

The world woke up to a shooting incident that took place during former US President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. As per the 78-year-old’s communications director Steven Cheung, he is “fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility.”

While world leaders have expressed their shock and condemned such an act of violence, a section of people on X (formerly Twitter) has tried to lighten the mood by referring the incident to the all-time hit show The Simpsons. For context, The Simpsons is known for its bizarre predictions.

It all started after a user claimed that Donald Trump’s shooting incident was predicted by The Simpsons.

Sharing a set of screenshots from the episode, the user said, “Simpsons got some explaining to do.”

Another added, “No way The Simpsons predicted Donald Trump getting shot.”

A few were shocked to know that The Simpsons “actually predicted Donald Trump’s assassination attempt.”

Meanwhile, in his first statement after the shooting attempt, Donald Trump said, “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.”

Mr Trump has also thanked the Secret Service and the law enforcement for their “rapid response. He added,  “I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response to the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.”

He added, “It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA.”
