Florida :

Ahead of their clash against Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Ireland coach Heinrich Malan expressed his feelings about the ongoing mega event saying that this tournament has gone pretty weird so far. Ireland is currently placed last in Group A, with just one point out of three matches they have played in the ongoing tournament so far. They have already failed to qualify for the Super Eights of the ongoing marquee event. In their last group stage match of the competition, the Irish team will go up against the Men in Green at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida on Sunday.

The Ireland coach asserted that the team has not trained at all since they have been down in Florida last week.

“We’ve been quite lucky. We played them a couple of weeks ago back home in Ireland. It’s been a challenge from a preparation point of view. We haven’t trained at all since we’ve been down in Florida the last week, so I mean, that is what it is. We’ve been having our unit meetings and our preparation meetings and just going over some of those plans that we’ve managed to execute pretty well back home and won the first game. We can piggyback on, that for a little longer period and hopefully, we can go well again tomorrow,” Malan said in the pre-match press conference.

The Irish coach further stated that the management has tried to keep the team busy.

“It’s been a pretty weird World Cup, as you say. Yeah, look, we’ve tried to keep the lads busy as much as we can, obviously doing our preparation and our analytics work in the background, and just keep them active physically. The boys are at the minute playing a bit of soccer and trying to just get the competitive juices flowing as well leading into tomorrow,” Malan added.

Squads:

Pakistan Squad: Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Babar Azam (c), Usman Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Amir, Abrar Ahmed, Saim Ayub, Azam Khan, Abbas Afridi.

Ireland Squad: Paul Stirling (c), Mark Adair, Ross Adair, Andrew Balbirnie, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Graham Hume, Josh Little, Barry McCarthy, Neil Rock, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Ben White, Craig Young.

Cricket Ireland officially confirmed their first men’s tour of Pakistan in August and September next year. While the particular fixture of the white-ball tour has yet to be decided, Cricket Ireland announced that they will go to Pakistan next year for a tour tentatively scheduled for August/September. The two sides are presently competing in a three-match T20I series in Ireland in preparation for next month’s ICC T20 World Cup, and Cricket Ireland Chair Brian MacNeice met with PCB Chair Mohsin Naqvi to discuss their 2025 visit to Pakistan.

MacNeice stated that the conversations were positive and that Ireland will travel to Pakistan next year, marking their men’s team’s first visit to the country.

“We are delighted to have welcomed Chairman Naqvi to Dublin and we had a very productive meeting. The presence of the PCB chairman in Ireland was very much appreciated and is a strong indicator of the excellent relationship between the two boards,” MacNeice said as quoted bt ICC.

“Discussions were wide-ranging and included exploring men’s, women’s and Wolves-level fixtures in the future. I’m very pleased that we were able to agree a men’s tour next year – this will be yet another historic first, coming after the tour to Pakistan by our senior women in 2022,” he added.

The ongoing series between Ireland and Pakistan is now tied at one game apiece, with the series’ third and final encounter planned for Tuesday in Dublin.

“The Pakistan squad have been excellent ambassadors for their country over the last week and have been very generous in their interactions with fans throughout their time in Ireland. We very much look forward to the deciding game in the series tomorrow and of course our meeting in the T20 World Cup next month,” MacNeice added.

“The cricketing friendship between Ireland and Pakistan runs very deep – indeed, the first meeting between the two sides was in 1962 here in Dublin, and Pakistan has been our opponent for both our inaugural women’s and men’s Test matches. We look forward to this auspicious tour and thank Chairman Naqvi and the PCB for their ongoing friendship and support,” he added.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) first issued a statement claiming that Ireland will also play a Test series in Pakistan, which was not part of the FTP.

“Chairman Cricket Ireland said that the Irish team would visit Pakistan next year in August-September for a Test series and would also review the possibility of a women’s team tour to Pakistan soon,” the PCB statement said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Pakistan is currently in Ireland for a three-match T20I series. The teams have levelled the series at 1-1 and to crown the champion the series decider will be played on Tuesday.

Ireland captain Paul Stirling took a cheeky dig at Pakistan after beating the Babar Azam-led side in the first T20I of a three-match series in Dublin on Friday. Former captain Andrew Balbirnie’s 77 helped guide Ireland to their first victory over Pakistan in 17 years. It was just Ireland’s second win against Pakistan following their shock triumph at the 2007 50-over World Cup in the West Indies. Speaking after the match, Stirling took a swipe at the pitches in Pakistan, labelling them as the ‘flattest decks in the world’.

“We are absolutely delighted. We wanted to start the summer off well and it was almost a perfect day for us. When you come here, especially from Pakistan, the flattest pitches in the world, ask them to bat first and see what they can get. We were happy to chase 180. Brilliant knock from Balbirnie, he got through the powerplay and picked up the pace later. It was a fantastic knock. We have had great games here especially against Pakistan. Absolutely delighted to get over the line,” Stirling said after the match.

After Ireland opted to bowl, Pakistan captain Babar Azam and opener Saim Ayub added 85 runs for the second wicket after the early dismissal of wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan.

Babar top-scored for the tourists with 57 in a total of 182-6 while Ayub hit 45. Iftikhar Ahmed (37) and Shadab Khan (14) added some crucial runs down the order to steer Pakistan to 182/6.

In response, Ireland reached a target of 183 with a ball to spare.

Ireland needed 40 to win from the last four overs, with Abbas Afridi dismissing George Dockrell for 24.

With Ireland needing 11 off the last over, Curtis Campher under-edged a boundary off Abbas and eventually sealed victory with a leg bye.

“I didn’t watch the last over. (I) went to the tent and put a towel over my head. I felt it was my job to get the team over the line… Harry said if we could bat normally till the 13th over, we could get the runs. That was a partnership which set it up,” Balbirnie, who was dismissed in the 19th over, said after the match.

Ireland claimed victory in the first T20I of their three-match series against Afghanistan in Sharjah on Friday, winning by 38 runs. Ben White and Josh Little starred with the ball for the tourists, while Harry Tector hit an undefeated half-century as Ireland took a 1-0 series lead against hosts Afghanistan. “Really happy. It was a fantastic team performance,” said Ireland captain Paul Stirling, according to Cricinfo. “We have a big two months ahead. So we’ve got to put this behind. We have to perform at our best to win games,” he added, looking ahead to the T20 World Cup starting in June.

Needing 150 to win, Afghanistan got off to a nightmare start when Mark Adair claimed the wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz with the very first ball of the innings.

Gurbaz’s opening partner, Sediqullah Atal, soon joined him in the stands when Little had him caught off Tector for one.

The Irish left-armer then bowled Azmatullah Omarzai first ball to set up a hattrick opportunity in just the second over of the innings.

White then took over the attack and dismissed top-scorer Mohammad Ishaq for 32, Mohammad Nabi, Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai and Nangeyalia Kharote to finish with figures of 4-20.

The tail were left with too much to do and despite resistance from Naveen-ul-Haq, who scored a knock of 13 off 15 balls, Afghanistan were all out for 111 after 18.4 overs.

Returning Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan earlier won the toss and sent Ireland in to bat.

Harry Tector struck an unbeaten 56 off 34 balls, including seven fours and two sixes, to guide Ireland to 149-6.

Stirling and Andy Balbirnie started well for the tourists and put on a first-wicket stand of 38, before Balbirnie fell to Azmatullah Omarzai on 22.

Khan, in his comeback after an injury lay-off, was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-19 and he claimed his first in Ireland opener Stirling for 25 in the 11th over.

The leg spinner then immediately got the dangerous Curtis Campher for a golden duck and later broke Gareth Delany‘s blossoming partnership with Tector in the 17th over.

Tector battled gamely in the middle but was unable to strike up a partnership of merit with those around him until the arrival of Delany and then Adair to the crease.

The right-hander put on stands of 35 with Delany and an undefeated 42 with Adair to set Afghanistan a target of 150, which eventually eluded the hosts.

Already a successful tour thanks to Ireland’s very first Test match win on March 1, the tourists can sew up the T20I series by winning the second match on Sunday in Sharjah.
