India’s successful run in the ongoing T20I series against England came to a sudden halt after they faced a shocking 26-run defeat in the third match. Playing in Rajkot, the hosts restricted England to 171/9 after opting to bowl first. However, in the chase, India kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and could manage only 145/9, falling short of 26 runs. The entire batting lineup of India miserably failed to put up a good show as Hardik Pandya‘s 35-ball-40-run knock became their only saving grace.

As the scoreline of the five-match series now reads 2-1 in the favour of the hosts, former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel slammed Hardik for his slow approach in the match.

“One cannot take 20-25 balls to get set in a T20I. Can’t take 20-25 balls to get set. I understand taking your time but you have to keep rotating the strike. Hardik may have ended up with 40 off 35, but there were a lot of dot balls at the start of his innings,” said Parthiv in the post-match show on Star Sports.

Apart from Parthiv, former England skipper Kevin Pietersen also questioned Team India’s decision of pushing Dhruv Jurel at No.8.

“India didn’t get the batting order right. Dhruv Jurel is an accomplished batter. Having him lower down the order for the left and right combination was not right. I’m a firm believer in your best batters batting up front,” said Pietersen.

“Left and right combination is alright till No.4 but after that you should send your best batters. Jurel is a proper batsman. He could have constructed a big innings,” he added.

Despite being on the losing side, India also had a silver-lining in spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who took a five-wicket haul. Chakravarthy has been a revelation for the T20I side since his return to the set-up last year, having last played for India in 2021 before that.

During the third T20I, Chakravarthy shined with figures of 5/24 in four overs, getting wickets of skipper Jos Buttler, Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer.

Gujarat Titans have entrusted former India keeper-batter Parthiv Patel with the dual responsibility of serving as their assistant and batting coach in the upcoming IPL, the franchise said on Wednesday. Parthiv will perform the dual role in the support staff led by head coach Ashish Nehra. “The Gujarat Titans are pleased to announce the appointment of Parthiv Patel as their new assistant and batting coach. With a distinguished 17-year career as a former Indian wicketkeeper-batter, Parthiv brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the team,” the franchise said in a statement.

“As the Titans prepare for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Parthiv’s insights into batting techniques and strategies will play a crucial role in enhancing the players’ skills.

“Parthiv, who is known for his sharp cricketing acumen and ability to mentor young talent, will strengthen the coaching staff and contribute to player development and performance,” GT added in the statement.

This is the first coaching role in the IPL for Parthiv, who retired in 2020.

Right after his retirement, he served as talent scout for Mumbai Indians for three seasons until 2023, and also the batting coach for MI Emirates in the inaugural season of ILT20.

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Gujarat Titans (GT) are set to expand the Indian core in their coaching staff by roping in former India wicket-keeper batter Parthiv Patel as their batting coach for IPL 2025. Parthiv is set to replace South Africa’s Gary Kirsten in that role, after the latter became Pakistan’s head coach, as per a report by Times of India. Parthiv is likely to feel at home at GT, having been born in Gujarat as well as having played over 15 years for the state in domestic cricket.

Prior to this, Parthiv Patel had been involved as a talent scout for five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI). After his retirement in 2020, Parthiv had been involved in the role, alongside duties as a cricket commentator and pundit.

Parthiv will join Ashish Nehra in Gujarat Titans’ coaching staff. As head coach of the franchise, Nehra led GT to two IPL finals in its first two seasons, winning the title in its first season 2022. Former English cricketer Vikram Solanki will continue to be the Director of Cricket for Gujarat Titans, the report further added.

Parthiv Patel has close to 3,000 IPL runs over 139 games for several franchises. He is also a three-time IPL winner as a player, having won the title as part of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2010, and as part of MI in 2015 and 2017. He had also played for Kochi Tuskers Kerala (KTK), Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

During his career, Parthiv represented India in 25 Test matches and 38 ODIs.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans are expected to retain Shubman Gill as their captain ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, with the likes of Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, B Sai Sudharshan and Mohit Sharma also touted as potential fellow retentions.

Ahead of India’s three match Test series against New Zealand, former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel firmly believes the Rohit Sharma-led side is capable of beating any side in the world currently in the longest format of the game. Since the time New Zealand beat India in 2021 World Test Championship final, India made it to another final in 2023 and is currently the top-ranked side in this format. They are also coming off after a 2-0 series win over Bangladesh, especially after batting aggressively in the rain-hit Kanpur Test to register a remarkable triumph.

“I don’t see pitches being like what they were against Bangladesh. It won’t be seaming as much as it was in Chennai and Kanpur, but looking at this squad, I don’t think India needs those kinds of pitches or even turners. This Indian team is good enough to beat any side in the world at this point.”

“Obviously, they would like to get some runs from Rohit Sharma with the way he has been playing and Axar Patel may get an opportunity. Against New Zealand, you want to win the series and India will be challenged at some point. But I think India has the personnel to defeat New Zealand,” said Parthiv to JioCinema.

India will play the opening game against New Zealand at Bengaluru on October 16, followed by playing next two matches in Pune and Mumbai. Parthiv, who earned 25 Test caps, feels India need to be wary of challenge from left-arm spin duo of Mitchell Santner and Ajaz Patel, owing to the batters’ previous struggles against them.

“With the WTC in mind, I’m sure India would like to win 3-0, and that’s a likely outcome. But India will be challenged, and their biggest challenge will be handling left-arm spinners, Mitchell Santner and Ajaz Patel. India has always struggled against left-arm spinners, so that will be their biggest test.”

Ex-keeper and selector Saba Karim thinks India have to be focused on the task at their hand, instead of thinking about the all-important five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia later this year.

“I think India’s biggest challenge will be to stay focused on the present and not think too far ahead to the Australian tour. They need to build on the positives we’ve seen in recent home series, like the emergence of exciting young pace bowlers.”

“Akash Deep was a revelation, and India also has several spinners to choose from. The selectors and team management will have to figure out the best combination to play, but personally, I’d love to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli firing at the top.”

India also have four traveling reserves in Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mayank Yadav and Prasidh Krishna for the Tests against New Zealand, which caught Karim’s curiosity. He signed off by cautioning India over taking New Zealand, who lost 2-0 in Sri Lanka, lightly.

“I think this is the first time since COVID that we are seeing four travelling reserves, which means that the Indian team management is already looking ahead to the Australian tour. The team looks well-equipped and well-balanced in terms of quality.”

“However, New Zealand has always been a very competitive side. Although they suffered a heavy defeat in Sri Lanka and may feel deflated, they have an inner strength that could surface. Since they’ve played in India before and managed to draw a game last time, India will have to work hard.”

India star Virat Kohli‘s lean patch in international cricket continues. The right-handed batter failed to fire in the recently-concluded first Test against Bangladesh held in Chennai. In both innings of the Test, Kohli delivered subpar scores of 6 and 17. Kohli’s poor form has put him under harsh criticism. However, former India opener Parthiv Patel has backed the underfire batter. Parthiv said that Kohli is facing the pressure of expectations because of the standards he has set for himself. Pathiv added that neither of Joe Root or Kane Williamson or Steve Smith — the rest three members of the ‘Fabulous 4’ — will be facing the kind of pressure that Kohli has been subjected to.

“I don’t think he’s feeling that kind of pressure. And as you rightly mentioned that. I don’t think Smith or Joe Root or Williamson can even think of the type of pressure he must be feeling. The pressure of expectation, that is huge. He has set his standard so high that even if he scores 60 or 70, that comes across as a failure. Because every time he walks in, we expect him to score 100. We expect him to play with that kind of intensity, which he has always been playing,” said Parthiv ahead of second Test between India and Bangladesh as quoted by Sportskeeda.

Virat is having a poor run of form across all formats this year. In 15 matches and 17 innings this year, he has scored just 319 runs at a sub-par average of 18.76, with just one half-century to his name and a best score of 76 made during the T20 World Cup final against South Africa.

Now, in Tests, Virat’s average is at an eight year low. In 114 Tests, he has scored 8,871 runs in 193 innings at an average of 48.74, with 29 centuries and 30 fifties. The last time his average was lower than this was during November 2016, when he averaged 48.28.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel feels there is “no harm” in trying Yash Dayal in place of either Jasprit Bumrah or Mohammed Siraj for the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur, beginning on Friday. Before the beginning of the Test series against Bangladesh in Chennai, skipper Rohit Sharma asserted that the workload management of their pacers will be monitored throughout their jam-packed Test schedule, which will last till January next year. India stamped their authority in the opening Test by sealing a 280-run victory. In the pre-match press conference on Thursday, assistant coach Abhishek Nayar didn’t dwell on the details of the playing XI.

Parthiv feels that Dayal, who has “tremendous potential,” can come in place of either Siraj or Bumrah, presenting a chance for everyone to see a left-arm pacer in action for India.

“This will be a great chance to see a left-armer. It has been a while since India had a left-arm seamer, so I feel if he gets the chance, it will be good. We will know. Yash Dayal has tremendous potential. So I don’t think there is harm in trying,” Parthiv Patel, who is an expert on JioCinema and Sports18 told ANI.

Another aspect that will be keenly looked at will be the middle-order setup of the Rohit-led side. Sarfaraz Ahmed and Dhruv Jurel are knocking on the door after impressing during India’s 4-1 series triumph over England earlier this year.

With the return of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul in the Test setup, Parthiv finds it hard to see the duo feature in the playing XI and could have to wait for their opportunities.

“I don’t think Sarfaraz and Dhruv will make a comeback to the side. Rishabh has just made a comeback. Both of them are very very talented players and very much ready for Test cricket. But they will have to wait for their chances,” Parthiv added.

Jurel earned his maiden Test cap for India against England in the 3rd Test in Rajkot. In his debut Test, the young wicketkeeper batter played a promising 46-run knock.

In the fourth Test, he played a match-saving knock of 90 (149) in the first inning, which propelled India’s score to 307.

Sarfaraz acted as the backbone of the Indian middle order. He garnered 200 in three matches at an average of 50.00.

Jurel and Dayal have been drafted in the Rest of India’s squad for the upcoming Irani Cup. On the other hand, Sarfaraz has been selected in Mumbai’s squad. If they are unable to make it to the playing XI against Bangladesh, they will be available to feature in the Irani Cup.

There has been a lot of speculations around the wicket-keeping position in the Indian cricket team when it comes to the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Ahead of the team selection, multiple players were in the fray but the selectors decided to go with Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant with KL Rahul becoming a high-profile exclusion. India captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that they were looking for middle-order batters when selecting wicket-keepers and that is why they excluded KL Rahul – someone who opened the batting for Lucknow Super Giants. Former India wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel named his pick between Samson and Pant for the playing XI in the T20 World Cup.

“There is no doubt about Sanju Samson when it comes to the way he has led and scored runs this season in the IPL. But Rishabh Pant comes with a different kind of variety. In the Indian batting lineup, we need the one left-hander in between. Looking at this point in time, Rishabh Pant looks like the favourite but they both are very capable players,” Patel said at an event in New Delhi.

Earlier, former India batter Yuvraj Singh also named his pick between Samson and Pant.

“I would probably go for Rishabh. Obviously, Sanju is also in great form, but Rishabh (is a) left-hander, and I believe that Rishabh has massive potential to win games for India, which he has done in the past. Lot more in Test cricket, and he’s someone who I feel can be a match-winner on the big stage,” Yuvraj told ICC.

Yuvraj also named a cricketer who will have to perform well for India to have a good T20 World Cup campaign.

Suryakumar Yadav (is India’s key player). Because the way he plays, he can change the complexion of a game in 15 balls. And he is definitely a surety… for India to win this T20 World Cup, Surya is going to be the key,” said Yuvraj.

New Delhi:

A team like India, which doesn’t have players competing round the year in T20 leagues across the globe, doesn’t need two separate coaches for the limited overs and Test format, feels former England spinner Graeme Swann. The BCCI has invited fresh applications for the head coach position, with a deadline set for May 27 as Rahul Dravid is unlikely to continue after the T20 World Cup. “For a nation like India, because of the IPL and the fact the players don’t play other leagues, people are based in India whole year round. You don’t need split (separate) coaches,” Swann replied to a PTI at the launch of the Legends Intercontinental T20 league here on Thursday.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, who is currently with the Kolkata Knight Riders as team mentor, has emerged as the front runner to succeed Dravid as the likes of reputed overseas coaches like Australians Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer and Zimbabwean Andy Flower have ruled themselves out of contention.

England have adopted split coaching with Brendon McCullum serving as the red-ball coach while Matthew Mott presides over white-ball formats.

South Africa (Shukri Conrad and Rob Walter) and Pakistan (Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie) also have separate coaches for limited overs and red ball cricket.

“In England, we have three teams that go all around the world cause our summer is in a different time, that’s one of the main reasons that split coaches in England. You don’t need it in India,” the 45-year off spinner, who has played 60 Tests, 79 ODIs, and 39 T20Is for England between 2000-2013.

“A good coach is a good coach, he’s the right man for all three forms so be it. If the guy is specialist in white ball cricket and he’s available then you can use him,” Swann added.

But BCCI secretary Jay Shah has already ruled out the possibility of having different coaches for red and white ball formats.

India doesn’t need overseas coaches: Parthiv

Former wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel believes that India boasts an abundance of talented coaches and sees no need to look beyond its borders for a new head coach.

“There are a lot of coaches from NCA that have joined Indian team, I don’t see the need for overseas coaches,” Parthiv said.

“India has so many capable coaches. Every other year our U-19 team wins the World Cup, India A team does well on overseas tours. They are coached by Indians so why do we need outside coaches? Chandrakant Pandit is a huge example,” he added.

National Cricket Academy (NCA) head VVS Laxman has been regularly stepping in for Dravid and “We have seen when Rahul Bhai is coach, Laxman bhai filling in for him. Though it’s not just the two coaches as there are other NCA coaches,” Parthiv said.

On Saturday, Royal Challengers Bengaluru chased down a target of 148 against Gujarat Titans in just 13.4 overs in Bengaluru. While the number of overs left might make one believe that RCB had it easy, it was not so. RCB lost six wickets and had it not been for some rearguard action by Dinesh Karthik and Swapnil Singh, things would have been tricky for RCB. The chase started on a string footing for RCB as they crossed in the Powerplay.

Just when it looked like RCB would cruise to the target, they started losing wickets. From 92/0 in 5.4 overs RCB were reduced to 111/6 in 10. 4 overs. Faf du Plessis (64) and Virat Kohli (42) were the only good performers as stars like Will Jacks (1), Rajat Patidar (2), Glenn Maxwell (1), Cameron Green (1)  fell like a pack of cards.

It prompted former Indian cricket team wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel to call Glenn Maxwell over-rated. “Glenn Maxwell….HE IS THE MOST OVERRATED player in the history of ipl…#IPL2024 ….” he wrote on X.

For that comment, he was brutally trolled and even body-shamed.

Talking about the match, Royal Challengers Bengaluru pressed the self-destruction button halfway but a blazing fifty by captain Faf du Plessis had enough torque in it to carry them to a four-wicket over Gujarat Titans in their IPL match on Saturday.

Du Plesiss (64, 23b, 10×4, 3×6) and Kohli (42, 27b, 2×4, 4×6), who added 92 runs in just 35 balls for the opening wicket, were in prime touch as Royal Challengers moved past a frail target of 148, braving some nervy moments, most of it their own creation.

The win also lifted RCB to seventh place on the table with eight points from 11 matches, and kept their mathematical chances of making it to the play-offs alive.

Former cricketer Parthiv Patel said on Tuesday that Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah had got the full backing of Rohit Sharma when they were struggling in the early part of their IPL stints at Mumbai Indians. Parthiv compared Rohit’s leadership with CSK talisman MS Dhoni, saying the Mumbai cricketer never “made a blunder”, while the Chennai captain had erred on a few occasions during his long IPL stint.

“I think the most important thing is that he (Rohit) supports his players. The best examples of this are Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah came into the MI set up in 2014 and by 2015, his performance wasn’t great,” Parthiv told Jio Cinema on Tuesday.

“They even pondered sending him back after half the season. But Rohit Sharma believed in his ability and from 2016 onwards, his performance has been excellent,” added the former India wicketkeeper, who played 25 Tests.

Bumrah, who came into the MI setup in 2014, has gone on to become the country’s go-to pacer in all three formats and played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s success in IPL.

Pandya, after becoming a part of the five-time champions in 2015, went on to lead Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in 2022 and is now back as MI skipper, replacing Rohit.

“Same with Hardik Pandya. He came in 2015 and became popular. His 2016 season wasn’t great but MI stuck with him and Pandya became the player he is today.” He added that Rohit brings a sense of calm to the side, which is unmatched.

“The best example is the two IPLs MI won by just one run each. That would not have been possible if you don’t have a captain who can stay calm on the ground.

“When there’s a tense match, sometimes wrong decisions or blunders are made. But the hallmark of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy is that in the last 10 years, you don’t remember that he made a blunder.

“Even Dhoni has made blunders like giving Pawan Negi an over, but if you see Rohit, you’ll never see a blunder. Keeping the process simple is something that Dhoni advises but we see Rohit practice that in games,” added Parthiv.

Former India pacer Zaheer Khan said Rohit takes decisions based on circumstances, which is one of the most difficult tasks for a captain in IPL.

“You can plan for a game in advance but nobody knows how proceedings will unfold in the middle. He (Rohit) acts according to situations and takes decisions, and many times they are different from what may have been planned in the run-up to the game.

“I think that’s his strength. In the IPL, taking on-the-spot decisions is one of the biggest challenges for captains and he did that well for MI,” he added.
