Manickam Tagore moves adjournment motion in LS, seeks Amit Shah’s reply on alleged police action against students

Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Tuesday moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, demanding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on alleged police action against students during a protest held at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on July 20, 2026.

In its notice, Mr. Tagore alleged that lathi charges, pellet guns, tear gas, and water cannons were used against students, including women participants, resulting in injuries and widespread public concern, emphasising that these allegations require a full, fair and transparent examination by the Lok Sabha House.

“I seek leave to move an Adjournment Motion to discuss a matter of urgent public importance concerning the police action during the student protest held at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on 20 July 2026. Reports and allegations arising from the incident have raised serious concerns regarding the nature and proportionality of force used to disperse the protesters. It has been alleged that lathi charges, pellet guns, tear gas, and water cannons were used against students, including women participants, resulting in injuries and widespread public concern. These allegations require a full, fair and transparent examination,” the Congress leader said.

Expressing anguish over repeated disruption of proceedings, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday (August 11, 2026) asked the government and the Opposition to arrive at a common ground so that the House can debate on key Bills that bring far-reaching changes in the country.

Making a statement in the House amid noisy Opposition protests, Mr. Birla said the government has agreed to the Opposition’s demand on a response from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the police action here against students protesting against the NEET paper leak on July 20.

Mr. Birla said other issues raised by the Opposition can also be discussed, provided the House functions without disruptions.

He said the government has to run the House and the Opposition and Treasury benches have to arrive at a common ground and engage in constructive discussion.

“I feel anguished when the House does not function,” Mr. Birla said, and asked Opposition members not to display placards inside the House as it is against parliamentary norms.

Since the Monsoon Session began on July 20, the Lok Sabha could not complete the Question Hour and several Bills were passed amid din without a debate.

Mr. Birla said that the Question Hour is very important as it helps members hold the government accountable and also brings transparency in the functioning of the executive. The Speaker underlined that he has already issued directions stating that only listed questions will be asked during the Question Hour. Question Hour is held between 11 a.m. and 12 noon in the Lok Sabha.

“The people of the country also want to see discussions in Parliament,” Mr. Birla said.

Mr. Birla’s fresh appeal to opposition came a day after the government had said the Opposition should not run away from debate and listen to the home minister without disruptions.

But the Opposition has insisted that the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya should also be discussed.

As the stalemate continued on Tuesday, Mr. Birla adjourned the proceedings till 2 p.m.

Separately, NDA members staged a protest outside the main entrance of Parliament against the police action on protestors in Jharkhand. They also questioned the ‘silence’ of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on the police action in Jharkhand and accused him of changing goal post at a time when the government has agreed for a response of Home Minister Shah on the police action on protesting students at Jantar Mantar here.

Opposition MPs, including Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, protested in Parliament House complex on Monday over the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya and the “police excesses” against student protesters.

They demanded that Home Minister Amit Shah must come to Parliament and make a statement on the alleged police excesses during the July 20 student protest over the paper leak issue.

Carrying placards against the government, the MPs protested in front of the Makar Dwar of Parliament with slogans such as ‘chhanda chor, gaddi chor’, ‘Amit Shah jawaab do’ and ‘chanda chor kahan milenge, BJP ke daftar mein’.

The MPs also kept a donation box at the spot to symbolise the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple and lined up around them to raise slogans against the government.

The Opposition MPs, mostly from the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, lined up behind a big banner that read ‘Amit Shah jawaab do”, and raised slogans against the Home Minister.

The INDIA bloc has vowed to corner the government on issues of alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple and the use of “brutal force” against students during their protests last week.

K.C. Venugopal moves Adjournment Motion in LS over alleged Ram Mandir donation theft case

Congress MP K.C. Venugopal moved an Adjournment Motion notice in the Lok Sabha to discuss what he described as “shocking revelations” of massive financial fraud and embezzlement of public donations at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

In his notice, Mr. Venugopal alleged, “There is an urgent need to discuss the shocking revelations of massive financial fraud, theft, and embezzlement of public donations at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Recent reports indicate a highly organised racket operating within the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, where bundles of cash and valuable jewellery donated by millions of devoted citizens have been systematically siphoned off.”

He further alleged a coordinated effort to cover up the irregularities, saying, “The deliberate destruction of 7 to 8 months of crucial CCTV footage to cover up these crimes, coupled with the unceremonious removal of the former Chief Accounts Officer who red-flagged these irregularities as early as 2020- 21, points to deep-rooted institutional complicity.”

The Congress leader dismissed the existing investigation by the State government as “mere eyewash”.

Congress MP submits notice seeking urgent discussion on Ram Temple donation ‘scam’

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala on Thursday (July 20, 2026) submitted a formal notice under Rule 267, seeking the suspension of listed business to discuss alleged financial irregularities, embezzlement, and donation looting linked to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.

In his notice addressed to the Rajya Sabha Secretary-General, Mr. Surjewala urged the Chair to set aside all pre-scheduled legislative work for an urgent, high-priority debate to establish government accountability.

The notice highlights that millions of devotees across the globe contributed thousands of crores of rupees through collective, individual, and secret donations out of deep religious faith.

“This is because the matter of theft of donations, looting of offerings, and embezzlement in the Shri Ram Temple is not only a dacoity on the faith of millions of devotees, but it is also a direct case of loot, embezzlement, and corruption committed by the members and associated employees of the Shri Ram Temple Trust constituted under the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court,” the notice read.

The Congress party has lined up top leaders, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K.C. Venugopal, and Gaurav Gogoi, to address the Lok Sabha during the discussion on ‘The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026’, according to INDIA bloc sources.

The Lok Sabha is likely to begin the debate on the anti-paper leak Bill at 2 p.m.

“We are neither against the paper leak Bill nor discussion on it; we fully support any move to strengthen exams, but we need an answer on pellet guns and excessive use of force against protesting students,” an INDIA bloc source stated. The stance indicates a willing yet conditional approach from Opposition ranks to engage in the debate, provided the government addresses safety and accountability concerns surrounding student demonstrations.
