Tokyo 2020 Olympic medal-winning wrestler Bajrang Punia has shared yet another strong comment on social media regarding Vinesh Phogat after the latter reached the final of the women’s 50kg freestyle category at the Paris Olympics 2024. Bajrang and Vinesh were part of many top-level wrestlers who had protested on the streets against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment towards women wrestlers. Now, with Vinesh guaranteed a medal at Paris 2024, Bajrang Punia has made sure that the mistreatment towards Vinesh isn’t forgotten.

On Tuesday, Vinesh became the first female Indian wrestler to reach an Olympic final. If she wins gold, she will become the first Indian woman to win gold at the Olympic Games.

“These are the daughters of the country, who have always brought glory to the country. Those who have always placed thorns in the path of these daughters will at least learn a lesson from these daughters and will refrain from sowing thorns in their path in future,” posted Bajrang Punia on X.

Earlier, after Vinesh had won her quarter-final against Ukraine’s Oksana Livach, Bajrang had hailed Phogat as a ‘lioness’ and said that he had been kicked, crushed, and “dragged on the streets in her country”.

“But let me tell you one thing, This girl was kicked and crushed in her own country. This girl was dragged on the streets in her country. This girl is going to conquer the world but she lost to the system in this country,” Bajrang had tweeted.

Vinesh has had an incredible run to the final. First, she beat world no. 1 Yui Susaki of Japan, who had never lost in her international career prior to that, boasting an 82-0 record. Then, she overcame former World Championships bronze medalist Oksana Livach. Finally, Vinesh completed an incredible day by beating Cuba’s Yesneylys Guzman 5-0 in the semi-final.

Quan sealed a China one-two in the women’s 10m platform, her winning total of 425.60 points keeping team-mate Chen Yuxi at bay for silver with 420.70. North Korea’s Kim Mi Rae took bronze on 372.10, and promptly burst into tears. Quan also won the 10m platform at the Tokyo Olympics, when she was just 14, and then took gold in the women’s synchronised 10m platform in Paris with Chen.

China are the unrivalled superpower in diving and have won all five golds in the sport so far in the French capital.

Three more golds are up for grabs.

China’s divers won all but one of the eight titles in Tokyo, Britain took the other.

Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain crashed out of the Paris Olympics after losing to China’s Li Qian in the women’s 75kg quarterfinal at North Paris Arena on Sunday. With Lovlina’s 1-4 split result, India failed to win any medals in boxing events in Paris. Following her loss, Lovlina spoke to IANS and expressed her disappointment for not being able to recreate her heroics from the previous edition. “I am having trouble accepting this defeat as I failed to achieve what I thought I would. I have to see where I lacked in the contest, if I knew beforehand where I lacked maybe I could have been champion,” Lovlina told IANS.

Alongside the disappointment of Lovlina’s elimination, many fans were left frustrated with the result of Nishant Dev’s quarterfinal bout against Mexican fighter Marco Verde as the Indian dominated the first two rounds but the fight was adjudged 1-4 in favour of the opponent.

Many fans have questioned the transparency of the scoring system in boxing which Lovlina brushed upon during the conversation.

“Boxing is a different sport, it’s difficult to figure out what is happening in the game as you may feel like you have won but it is up to the judges’ perception of how they score the bout. You can’t really say what is right or wrong, you just have to accept it,” she added.

The 2024 Paris Olympics have been a bittersweet one so far for India with many athletes having incredible campaigns but missing out on medals in crucial matchups. However, one of the greatest stories in the opening fortnight has been that of Manu Bhaker.

The 22-year-old became the first Indian woman shooter in the history of the Olympics to win a medal when she bagged bronze in the 10m air pistol women’s event. She followed her history-making win by becoming the first Ievent Indian to win two medals at a single edition of the Olympics post-independence when she teamed up with Sarabjot Singh to secure bronze in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team and just missed out on her third when she finished fourth in the women’s 25m Pistol category.

She has also been given the honour of being India’s flag-bearer at the closing ceremony of the tournament. Lovlina expressed her joy for Manu and thanked her for bringing ‘pride to our nation’.

“I am so happy for her. She did what we could not do in this Olympics and winning two medals is an incredible feat so I want to thank her for keeping the pride of our nation,” concluded the 2020 Tokyo Bronze medallist.

Aditi Ashok will be determined to make up for her near-miss at the Tokyo Games, while Diksha Dagar will look to overcome the trauma of a car accident as the two Indian golfers begin their campaign at the Paris Games on Wednesday. Two-time Olympian Aditi had come agonisingly close to securing a medal before finishing fourth three years ago in Tokyo and will seek redemption this time. Diksha, on the other hand, escaped unhurt after being involved in a car accident that left her mother hospitalised. But the 23-year-old from Jhajjar has shrugged off all problems and is determined for Olympic success.

A quarter of the field, which means 15 out of 60 players, in the women’s Olympic golf competition have played in all three Games since the sport returned to the programme in 2016 and Aditi is one of them.

Her teammate Diksha Dagar, who is making her second Olympic appearance, is one of the 36 players in the field, who have played at least one Olympic Games before this one.

Aditi tees off with Gaby Lopez (Mexico) and Esther Henseleit (Germany) at 9.22 am local time (12.52 pm IST), while Diksha plays with Wei-Ling Hsu (Chinese Taipei) and Emma Spitz (Austria) from 10:55 a.m.

The women’s competition runs from Wednesday to Saturday.

A rookie winner at her home event, the Hero Women’s Indian Open back in 2016, Aditi has now won five times on the Ladies European Tour but is still awaiting her maiden success on the LPGA. She has been on the LPGA since 2017.

Aditi’s big moment came in 2021 when she was within a whisker of an Olympic medal, but finished fourth. Despite missing out on a medal she was appreciated by the entire country including the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Diksha is a rare athlete, who has competed in both the Deaflympics (Olympics for hearing impaired athletes) and the main Olympics. A double medallist in the Deaflympics, Diksha qualified for Tokyo almost at the last minute. This time, her consistent showing in 2023 and 2024 won her a place months ahead.

In Paris, Diksha suffered an unexpected scare when the car she was travelling in with her family, including her father Col Narendar Dagar, who also caddies for her, suffered an accident.

While Diksha and her father were totally unhurt, her brother got some minor injuries. However, Diksha’s mother hurt her back and had to be hospitalised. She is now recovering.

Aditi is coming off a tie for 22nd at the LPGA Tour’s Portland Classic that ended this past Sunday. She played four weeks in row since the Amundi Evian and this is her fifth week on the trot.

Aditi had her father, Ashok, on bag in 2016 and then it was her mother Maheshwari caddying for her in Tokyo. Her father, who has been with her on the LPGA most of the time, will be doing the duty again in Paris.

In Tokyo, Nelly Korda (United States) won the gold, while Mone Inami of Japan beat Lydia Ko (New Zealand) for the silver medal with a two-putt par on the first extra hole. Ko got the bronze and India’s Aditi ended a heart-breaking fourth.

In Rio 2016, Inbee Park (Republic of Korea) won the gold, while Lydia Ko took the silver and Shanshan Feng (China) was the bronze medallist.

So Lydia is the only player to have medalled twice and is looking for a third one and a first gold.

A total of 33 countries are represented in the 60-athlete field. Twelve of the top 15 players are competing this week.

Six players who are or have reached World No. 1 in the Rolex Rankings, Jin Young Ko (Korea), Lydia Ko (New Zealand), Nelly Korda (USA), Atthaya Thitikul (Thailand), Lilia Vu (USA), Ruoning Yin (China) are among the players in the field.

Minjee Lee of Australia will be making her third Olympic appearance following her brother Min Woo’s Olympic debut in the men’s competition last week. The Lees are the only brother-sister combination in the Olympic golf fields.

Celine Boutier is one of two players to represent France in the women’s Olympic golf competition, along with Perrine Delacour. Boutier had the best season of her career in 2023 where she earned four wins, including a major championship, The Amundi Evian Championship, in her home country.

Prior to 2016, women’s golf was contested in the Olympics twice in the early 1900s (1900 and 1904).

It was a highly successful day for India at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday as Neeraj Chopra qualified for the javelin final while wrestler Vinesh Phogat registered two massive victories to book her semifinal berth. Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj produced a mammoth throw of 89.34m on his very first attempt in the qualification round to begin his campaign in Paris. On the other hand, Vinesh pulled off a stunning win over Japan’s Yui Susaki who has lost only five bouts in her career since 2010. She continued her momentum in the quarterfinal as she defeated Ukraine’s Oksana Vasylivna Livach. (Olympics 2024 Medals Tally)

It has been a tough year for Vinesh who was a leading voice in the protests against former President of Wrestling Federation of India Brij Bhushan Singh. She competed at the 2024 Asian Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and earned a quota place for India.

Vinesh also had a massive setback as she injured the Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on her left knee during a training session that ruled her out of the Asian Games.

Following his qualification for the javelin final, Neeraj had a special message for Vinesh as he acknowledged her massive win against the much-decorated 50kg freestyle wrestler Yui Susaki.

“This is extraordinary. To beat Susaki is unreal. The effort she has put in shows. After what she has been through, I pray for her that she wins a medal. All best to her,” Neeraj said according to RevSportz.

Vinesh, who is participating in her third Olympics, narrowly missed a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics 2016 after suffering an injury. In Tokyo 2020, she lost to Vanesa Kaladzinskaya in the quarterfinals.

Coming to Neeraj, the reigning world champion came up with his all-time second-best throw at a men’s javelin event, with his top throw coming at Stockholm Diamond League 2022 with a distance of 89.94 m. It was also the 26-year-old’s best throw in any qualification round.

Indian quarter-miler Kiran Pahal finished sixth in heat 1 of the women’s 400m repechage round at the Paris 2024 Olympics and failed her place in the semi-finals on Tuesday. Pahal clocked 52.59s in the repechage round, a time slower than her 52.51s finish in the first round. The 24-year-old did not secure a semifinal as only the top athletes in each heat, along with the two best in repechage overall, advanced. At Paris 2024, a repechage round introduced for all individual track events from 200m to 1500m (including hurdles). The new format covers a total of six different distances in both men’s and women’s races, which include four rounds instead of the usual three.

In the new repechage format, athletes who do not qualify by placing in round one heats, will have a second chance to qualify for the semi-finals by participating in repechage heats.

This new repechage format will replace the former system, when athletes would advance through fastest times, sometimes known as ‘lucky losers’ in addition to the top placings in the heats.

Kiran punched her ticket for Paris in the women’s 400m during the Inter-State Athletics in June. She ran a blistering pace to clock 50.92 seconds to better the Paris Olympic Games qualification time of 50.95 on the opening day of the event.

She has also emerged as the second-fastest Indian female 400m runner of all time. Notably, Hima Das holds the national record of 50.79 seconds clocked in 2018.

Kiran is the first Indian female quarter-miler to have qualified for the Olympic Games after a gap of eight years since Nirmal Sheoran (Haryana) qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Defending champion Neeraj Chopra turned on the style as he stormed into the men’s javelin throw final of the Olympic Games with a season’s best effort of 89.34m in his very first attempt in the qualification round on Tuesday. Much like his performance in the Tokyo Olympics, the 26-year-old crossed the automatic qualifying mark of 84m in his opening throw to occupy the top spot in Group B. The tremendous effort, which is the second best of his career, also set aside concerns surrounding Chopra’s fitness after he revealed that he had been battling an adductor niggle in the build-up to the Games. His personal best continues to be 89.94m achieved back in 2022.

The other Indian in fray, Kishore Jena, bowed out of contention to make the 12-man final on Thursday after managing a poor throw of 80.73m.

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who is the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, also qualified for the finals with a throw of 86.59m in Group B.

From the same group, Grenada veteran Anderson Peters too made the cut with a throw of 88.63m.

Chopra produced the most eye-catching performance of the day lasting just a few minutes — quite literally a case of ‘he came, he threw and he conquered’.

Earlier in the day, Jena finished ninth in Group A qualification round with an underwhelming throw of 80.73m, which has pushed him out of contention for a slot in the finals.

All those who throw 84m or above, or at least 12 best performers from Group A and B combined will advance to the final to be held on Thursday.

Jena’s opening throw was 80.73m, and he fouled his second attempt before coming up with 80.21m in his last effort.

Julian Weber of Germany topped Group A with a first round throw of 87.76m while former world champion Julius Yego (85.97m) of Kenya and Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch (85.63m) of Czechia were second and third respectively.

Toni Keranen (85.27m) of Finland was the fourth athlete to go past the automatic qualification mark of 84m.

Jena had booked an automatic Olympics berth with his 87.54m throw for a silver medal in the Asian Games in October last year.

After that, he crossed the 80m mark in just one out of six competitions before Tuesday.
