Jammu and Kashmir team celebrates after winning the Ranji Trophy 2025-26, on the final day of the match between Karnataka vs Jammu And Kashmir, at KSCA Rajnagar Stadium (The D.R. Bendre Cricket Stadium Hubli) in Hubballi, on February 28, 2026.

On a baking, early-summer afternoon at the KSCA Rajnagar Stadium here on Saturday, Jammu & Kashmir steamrolled Karnataka to win its maiden Ranji Trophy title.

As J & K went into day five a massive 477 runs in the green and with six second-innings wickets still intact, the result was seldom in question. Yet, the visitors refused to move, even by an inch, the foot they had had on Karnataka’s neck since the start of the contest.

Paras Dogra & Co. batted for 56 overs, added 156 runs and did not lose a wicket. Karnataka’s downfall was slow and painful, with little heed to its reputation as an eight-time champion. Death by thousand cuts it truly was.

It was fitting that the men in the middle, when draw was called at 2:10 p.m. and J & K declared the champion, were Qamran Iqbal (160 n.o., 311b, 16×4, 3×6) and Sahil Lotra (101 n.o., 226b, 8×4, 3×6).

Both were last-minute injury replacements for experienced opener Shubham Khajuria and young all-rounder Vanshaj Sharma. Qamran’s was his second First Class ton and Sahil’s his first. J & K had an assembly line of heroes.

For Karnataka, it will be a chastening experience, for even a star-studded team couldn’t stop the State from losing a second straight home final, albeit 16 years apart.

In the time since Karnataka won its last title in 2014-15, Vidarbha has won thrice, Saurashtra twice, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh once each.

With J & K now joining the list, the democratisation of Indian cricket is all but complete – Kanyakumari to Kashmir.

The scores: Jammu & Kashmir — 1st innings: 584.

Karnataka — 1st innings: 293.

Jammu & Kashmir — 2nd innings: Qamran Iqbal (not out) 160, Yawer Hassan b Prasidh 1, Shubham Pundir c sub (Shrijith) b Vyshak 4; Paras Dogra b Prasidh 16, Abdul Samad c Vyshak b Shreyas 32, Sahil Lotra (not out) 101; Extras (b-17, lb-9, w-2): 28; Total (for four wkts. decl. in 113 overs): 342.

Fall of wickets: 1-6, 2-11, 3-72, 4-145.

Karnataka bowling: Vyshak 10-1-30-1, Prasidh 12-0-42-2, Vidyadhar 13-0-51-0, Shikhar 31-10-50-0, Shreyas 36-13-84-1, Karun 7-2-21-0, Rahul 2-0-15-0, Mayank 2-0-23-0.

Jammu & Kashmir put Karnataka through the wringer again as it reached 527 for six at stumps on day two of the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy final at the KSCA Rajnagar Stadium here on Wednesday.

It wasn’t a display of unqualified control and superiority but more like how weaver ants are super-efficient in their team work.

There were half-centuries for skipper Paras Dogra (70, 166b, 8×4), Kanhaiya Wadhawan (70, 109b, 9×4) and Sahil Lotra (57 batting, 93b, 7×4) as J & K added 243 runs to its overnight total before a combination of bad light and a drizzle brought an end to the proceedings 40 minutes before scheduled close.

The morning began under partially cloudy skies and the previous night’s rain appeared to have rendered the outfield a tad sluggish. The Karnataka bowlers kept it tight, not allowing a boundary for nearly 40 minutes, as V. Vyshak bowled four straight maidens.

Though Abdul Samad pulled Vyshak for a four, it was far from pressure-releasing. Centurion Shubham Pundir (121, 247b, 12×4, 2×6) and Samad (61, 104b, 6×4, 1×6) fell in the span of six balls, with the former caught at square-leg off Vidyadhar Patil and the latter edging Prasidh Krishna behind.

Dogra, who had retired hurt on Tuesday, came in at 307 for four and the Karnataka pacers resumed their ploy of peppering him with bouncers. The close-in fielders joined in by being chirpy and even succeeded in provoking Dogra into head-butting substitute K.V. Aneesh — albeit, ever-so-slightly — at silly-point.

But the experienced man soon cleared the fog that had settled over his head and combined for 73 runs with Wadhawan to take J & K to 380 for four at lunch. Similar to the first day, Karnataka’s intensity dropped at an inopportune time, as Dogra and Wadhawan collected a series of fours through cover, backward-point and wide of the slip fielders.

However, Wadhawan fell trying one too many, as K.L. Rahul at slip latched on to a dab after a juggle. Dogra’s day, though, continued to be eventful when a bouncer from Vidyadhar ricocheted off his helmet, hit the stumps but couldn’t dislodge the bails.

Luck finally ran out when a defensive stroke to Shreyas Gopal ended with the cherry crashing into his stumps after bouncing off the ground.

Jammu and Kashmir's captain Paras Dogra vainly tries to stop the ball from dislodging the bails off the bowling of Karnataka's Shreyas Gopal, on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Elite 2025-26 final at the KSCA Rajnagar Stadium in Hubballi, on February 25, 2026.

Amidst this chaos, Lotra kept his head, reaching an unbeaten 57, his first half-century of the season. A few more runs on Thursday will leave Karnataka with a mountain to climb in a final where the first-innings lead is seemingly all important now.

The scores: Jammu & Kashmir — 1st innings: Qamran Iqbal c Rahul b Prasidh 6, Yawer Hassan c Rahul b Prasidh 88, Shubham Pundir c sub (Aneesh) b Vidyadhar 121, Paras Dogra b Shreyas 70, Abdul Samad c Kruthik b Prasidh 61, Kanhaiya Wadhawan c Rahul b Shikhar 70, Sahil Lotra (batting) 57, Abid Mushtaq (batting) 20; Extras (b-14, lb-16, w-4): 34; Total (for six wkts. in 156 overs): 527.

Fall of wickets: 1-18, 2-157, 3-303, 4-307, 5-417, 6-471.

Jammu and Kashmir captain Paras Dogra pulled off a sensational catch to dismiss Ajinkya Rahane during Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy encounter against Mumbai on Friday. The 40-year-old cricketer was at full stretch when he completed a brilliant one-handed catch that left both fans and experts impressed. During the 27th over of the Mumbai 2nd innings, Rahane was batting on 16 and he played a full delivery by Umar Nazir Mir. The ball was travelling at a brisk pace between cover and mid-off. However, Dogra pulled off the perfect dive to reach the ball and complete the catch with just one hand.

Meanwhile, a fifty on Ranji comeback was not meant to be for India captain Rohit Sharma who fell for 28. Playing his first game for Mumbai in domestic red-ball cricket in nearly a decade, Rohit’s first day on the field was a disaster with the 37-year-old falling for a 19-ball 3 in the opening hour of the Ranji Trophy clash against Jammu Kashmir.

But on Friday, Rohit gave a far better account of himself to notch up a fluent 28, his best in first-class cricket since a 52 in the second innings of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand last year.

It indeed has been that long for Rohit, who has since scored 0, 8, 18, 11, 3, 6, 3 and 9 in subsequent outings against New Zealand and Australia.

Back then in mid-October, India were cemented on top of the World Test Championship points table and the house was in complete order for the national side.

But it all came crumbling down following defeats to New Zealand and Australia which forced Indian superstars to play domestic cricket.

On Friday, he looked for a big one but it wasn’t to happen. Rohit’s knock of 28 was mixed with hits and misses in the initial stages, which all began with a tough dropped chance by Nazir in the fourth over when he could not grab a return catch on his follow through.

Rohit immediately responded with a pull shot for a six over the square leg.

A thick outside edge then flew between the fielder at gully and second slip, and on the final ball Rohit flashed hard and wide to put the ball away for another four on the off-side.

Dropped on one, Rohit had raced to 21 off 11 balls at one stage but he remained cautious mostly, even though there were a few times he was beaten.

With comparatively no moisture on the second day wicket here at the BKC, J&K bowlers also had to work hard to keep it tight but could not stop Rohit from freeing up his arms for a total of three sixes and two fours.

Eventually, it took a perfectly-timed leap for a one-handed grab from J&K’s Abid Mushtaq at mid-wicket off Nazir, who dismissed Rohit for the second time in the contest, to end the Indian captain’s stay in the middle.

While the lanky Nazir had the last laugh, Rohit walked off with an innings that had elements of all that was and could have been, hits and misses infused with promise that a big knock could just be around the corner for the struggling mainstay.

Jammu and Kashmir skipper Paras Dogra seemed frustrated with the standard of umpiring in their Ranji Trophy game against defending champions Mumbai, and hoped that the match officials were a “bit more attentive”. The 40-year-old Dogra, a veteran of 140 first-class games who is playing his last season in domestic cricket, lamented that it “has been going on for years now”. On the second day, ICC elite panel discard Sundaram Ravi couldn’t hear a loud nick off Shreyas Iyer’s edge when it was heard by one and all and later shown on replays.

Then he adjudged Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane caught behind and the batter had crossed the boundary ropes when he was called back again. Ravi ruled Umar Nazir’s delivery as a no-ball but this time there was no replay to corroborate his call. “What to say. This has been going on for years and there’s nothing much that we can do about it. Umpires are human after all and can make mistakes. But had they been a bit more attentive, it would have been fun,” Dogra, a former Himachal Pradesh legend, told reporters after the end of day’s play.

“But it’s part and parcel of the game. That’s why they got DRS. It would have been a good experience to have DRS here, but we can’t control it since there are 10-15 games happening simultaneously. So, it does not make any difference.” Struggling 101 for 7 in their second innings, Mumbai rode on Shardul Thakur’s (113 not out) unbeaten hundred to take their lead to 188 runs by the end of seconds day’s play.

The J&K skipper was all praise for Thakur’s effort.

“Shardul played really well. The ball stopped moving, so that had an impact. That’s when we tried doing something different and tried out bouncers, which did not work. It was one of the best innings (in domestic cricket) that I have seen,” Dogra said.

Dogra believes that if the target stays within 250-run mark, there is match in hand.

“You have to be patient. Still the wicket is playing out well, they are 188 runs ahead. We will have to bat well and I am hopeful. We scored 200 in the last innings and the wicket is getting better, so there’s hope,” he said.
