Shops and markets remained closed in different parts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after a protest call by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), as over 20 people have reportedly been killed in recent police action in the region.

About 2,000 protestors associated with the JAAC launched a protest march from Bhimber on Tuesday (June 9, 2026_ and they would reach Mirpur for onward travel to Muzaffarabad, BBC Urdu reported.

It added that some protesters would reach Rawalakot and then proceed to Muzaffarabad. Police and security forces personnel are patrolling the roads and other areas.

JAAC has been staging protests demanding subsidised flour and electricity. The group was outlawed on Friday (June 5, 2026) by authorities, citing concerns over public order and security.

The streets in Muzaffarabad were deserted, with hardly any vehicles on the roads, Dawn reported.

It added that riot police and paramilitary personnel remained deployed in the city. However, no protests were witnessed in the city.

It reported that hundreds of people had gathered in the Quaid-i-Azam stadium of Mirpur, another major town of PoK.

“Shops are closed here, and traffic is off the roads,” local journalist Sajjad Jarral told Dawn by telephone.

The legal fraternity of PoK boycotted judicial proceedings on the Bar Council’s call to protest the alleged arrest of senior lawyer Amjad Ali Khan, a core member of the JAAC.

Pakistan’s human rights body on Monday (June 8, 2026) said that it was “deeply alarmed” by the ongoing violence in PoK during violent clashes.

Authorities on Tuesday (June 9, 2026) announced a reward for those who helped in the arrest of the key leaders of the JAAC.

According to an official notification, a “Rs 10 million reward money” will be given to any person who provides information leading to the successful arrest of the central leaders of the JAAC, including Shaukat Nawaz Mir, Omar Nazir Kashmiri, Sardar Aman and Khawaja Mehran.

The notification states that the identity of those who provide information that helps in the arrest of the wanted persons will be kept confidential.

Meanwhile, PoK’s Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore urged a return to the negotiating table to end the tensions that have gripped the region over the past few days.

Mt. Rathore also acknowledged that while some of the demands of protesters, particularly related to refugee seats, require careful review, the solution must come through discussion rather than confrontation.

The JAAC has long been demanding the abolition of 12 “refugee seats” in the so-called Legislative Assembly in PoK. The seats are reserved for refugees from Kashmir who settled in Pakistan after 1947.

Pakistani strikes killed at least 12 people in Afghanistan near the border between the two countries, Afghan government officials and local sources said on Wednesday (June 10, 2026).

“Last night, the Pakistani military once again violated Afghanistan’s airspace and bombed civilian homes in the provinces of Kunar, Khost, and Paktika. As a result of these attacks, 11 children, one woman, and one elderly man were killed,” Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid wrote on X.

An official in Khost province who requested anonymity told AFP a strike hit a house in Spera district, killing nine people and wounding 10 others.

In neighbouring Paktika province, a resident said a separate attack killed three people.

Pakistan’s military did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment.

The strikes are the deadliest in weeks and follow a period of relative calm at the border, after a war between the two countries erupted in late February.

A UN report published last month found that at least 372 Afghan civilians were killed and 397 others wounded in that conflict in the first three months of this year.

Pakistani security forces have killed at least 17 suspected terrorists following a bomb attack on a shuttle train in Quetta city of the restive Balochistan province last week.

At least 16 people, including three security personnel, were killed and scores injured in the suspected vehicle-borne suicide attack on a shuttle train near a station in Quetta on May 24.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) of the Pakistan Military, after the incident, security forces conducted multiple intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across various districts of Balochistan, killing 17 terrorists.

According to the ISPR statement, security forces effectively targeted several terrorist hideouts during operations conducted in Mastung, Nushki, Zehri, Khuzdar, and Kech.

It said that in a heavy exchange of fire with terrorists belonging to the Fitna-al-Hindostan, 17 of them were killed.

The ISPR also said that security forces recovered weapons, ammunition, a large quantity of explosives, and prepared Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from the terrorists.

The killed terrorists were involved in numerous terrorist activities in the region.

The ISPR said that search operations are ongoing in the affected areas to eliminate any remaining terrorists.

Pakistan military chief Asim Munir arrives in Tehran in push to end Iran war https://artifex.news/article71012397-ece/ Fri, 22 May 2026 20:55:00 +0000 https://artifex.news/article71012397-ece/ Read More “Pakistan military chief Asim Munir arrives in Tehran in push to end Iran war” »

]]>

Pakistan’s powerful army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Friday (May 22, 2026), with Islamabad mediating as the Islamic Republic examines a new U.S. proposal to end the West Asia war.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, however, said the visit did not necessarily mean “we have reached a turning point or a decisive situation”.

The disagreements between Iran and the United States were “deep and extensive”, he added in quotes carried by Iran’s ISNA news agency.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had earlier voiced hope of progress on ending the war, which broke out on February 28 when the U.S. and Israel launched attacks against Iran.

A ceasefire on April 8 halted the conflict, but negotiation efforts, including historic face to face talks hosted in Islamabad have so far failed to yield a lasting agreement.

Previous comments by President Donald Trump had suggested weeks of stop-start negotiations to strike a permanent end to the war were teetering on the “borderline” between a deal and renewed attacks.

Pakistan’s military said in a statement that Mr. Munir had “arrived in Tehran as part of ongoing mediation efforts”.

It said he had been welcomed by Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and Pakistani counterpart Mohsin Naqvi.

Mr. Naqvi visited Iran for the second time in a week on Wednesday (May 20, 2026) and met President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Mr. Baqaei said a delegation from Qatar had also held talks with the Iranian Foreign Minister on Friday (May 22, 2026).

“In recent days, many countries — both regional and non-regional — have been trying to help bring the war to an end… However, Pakistan remains the official mediator.”

Pakistan, Iran’s eastern neighbour, hosted in April the only direct negotiations between U.S. and Iranian officials to take place since the war began.

Mr. Munir was at the centre of the action during that round of talks, greeting both delegations on their arrival and displaying bonhomie with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.

But the talks ultimately failed, with Iran accusing the U.S. of making “excessive demands”.

Since then, the two sides have exchanged multiple proposals, with the threat of renewed war looming all along.

Hormuz

Iranian media had reported on Thursday (May 21, 2026) that Mr. Munir had been due in Tehran that day in order to continue “talks and consultations” with Iranian authorities.

Mr. Rubio later said to reporters of the Pakistani visit: “Hopefully that’ll advance this further.”

On Friday (May 22, 2026), he said that Mr. Trump’s “disappointment” with America’s NATO allies over a lack of support in the Iran war would need to be “addressed”.

Mr. Rubio added that he told European countries they may have to come up with a “Plan B” to help force open the Strait of Hormuz if the war with Iran drags on.

Tehran effectively closed the key shipping lane, through which large amounts of oil and gas usually travel, in retaliation for the U.S.-Israeli strikes launched in February.

The future of the Strait of Hormuz remains a key sticking point in negotiations, with fears growing that the global economy will be hit hard as pre-war oil stockpiles are depleted.

European Union nations moved on Friday (May 22, 2026) towards imposing sanctions on Iranian officials and others responsible for blocking the strait.

Mr. Baqaei also listed the situation in the strait and a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports as issues to be examined.

“The issue of ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, is very important,” he added.

Lebanon front

Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the West Asia war with rocket fire at Israel in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s supreme leader in U.S.-Israeli strikes.

Since a truce began on April 17, Israel has continued to launch strikes, carry out demolitions and issue evacuation orders in south Lebanon, saying it is targeting Hezbollah, which has also kept up attacks.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said Israeli attacks have killed at least 3,111 people in Lebanon since March 2.

The Ministry said Israeli strikes on the south killed 10 people on Friday (May 22, 2026), including six rescuers and a child.

The Israeli military also announced a separate airstrike that killed two people in an area in southern Lebanon where it is fighting Hezbollah.

The United States on Thursday (May 21, 2026) sanctioned nine Hezbollah-linked individuals it accused of “obstructing the peace process in Lebanon”, including two officers.

It marked the first time Lebanese officers have been sanctioned by the United States.

Three people, including a tribal chief, were killed and four others injured in an improvised explosive device blast at a marketplace in northwest Pakistan on Monday (May 18, 2026), police said.

The blast occurred in a busy plaza in Wana town of South Waziristan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Rescue teams and residents rushed to the scene after the explosion and shifted the injured to Wana Headquarters Hospital for medical treatment, along with the dead bodies, police said.

According to District Police Officer Mohammad Tahir Shah Wazir, the explosion occurred near Gulshan Plaza when the vehicle of Malik Tariq, chief of the Ahmadzai tribe, was passing through the market area.

The powerful blast resulted in the deaths of three individuals on the spot, including Tariq, while four others were wounded, he said.

The blast caused widespread panic in the market area, eventually leading shops and businesses to shut down.

Locals and community leaders condemned the attack and urged the state to review its security policies.

Authorities have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the matter.

In a separate incident, six members of a family were injured in a suspected drone strike on a house in the Bajaur district of the province.

Those injured were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Khar, where they were being provided medical treatment, according to the police.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.

No group claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the Pakistan government accuses the banned terror outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan of carrying out attacks on civilians as well as government infrastructure, especially in provinces bordering Afghanistan, after its ceasefire deal ended in November 2022.

Security forces gunned down five terrorists in intelligence-based operations in northwest Pakistan, police said on Sunday (May 17, 2026).

The operations were conducted late on Saturday (May 16, 2026) in the Bannu district of restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to police.

The Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sajjad Khan said that the operations were launched following a recent attack on a police checkpost in Fateh Khel area in the district.

At least 15 security officials were killed and several were injured in the attack at the police post on May 10. However, no particular group claimed responsibility for it.

The terrorists killed were allegedly involved in attacks on security forces, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and civilians, RPO Khan said.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police for eliminating the terrorists in Bannu.

Pakistan continues to reel under terrorism, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa being the worst-hit province, according to a 2025 report by Islamabad-based Centre for Research and Security Studies.

Today, China has built and launched satellites for Pakistan and in 2026 announced that it will send one Pakistani astronaut to the Tiangong space station. (Representational image)

The Chinese space programme has undertaken major strides since it built and launched its first satellite in 1970. In last half a century Beijing has conducted satellite launches, built its own navigation system, carried out successful spacewalks, and built and operated its own space station. China is also in the process of undertaking a manned moon mission by 2030. China has also consistently promoted its space technologies and pushed for cooperation under Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) dubbed the space silk road. This entails “a service network weaved by satellites and ground stations among the BRI partner countries has promoted the space industry to better benefit the local people”. China has also used its launching platform, the Long March, to promote its soft power by launching satellite for a number of other countries.

The ‘all-weather friendship’ between China and Pakistan has been replicated in their space cooperation as well. The partnership began in 1990 with China launching Pakistan’s Badr-I satellite, the momentum took time. Today, China has built and launched satellites for Pakistan and in 2026 announced that it will send one Pakistani astronaut to the Tiangong space station.

The incident occurred on Sunday (March 29, 2026), during the quadrilateral summit meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Egypt as they discussed the West Asia conflict.

Mr. Dar fell down while calling Badr Abdelatty to the stage after he arrived at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He was captured on camera falling down but getting up and joining his guest for the ceremonial photo session.

Mr. Dar did not show any signs of injury, but his son revealed that he was on pain killers to manage discomfort and only agreed for a medical checkup late at night.

“Ishaq Dar Sahib, despite sustaining an injury during the reception of the Egyptian Foreign Minister today, completed all highly important meetings throughout the day on painkillers, Alhamdulillah, in the best possible manner,” Ali Dar said on X.

He added that around 9 pm, after recording the official statement, a medical examination was conducted at the insistence of the family.

“His X-rays are Alhamdulillah overall fine. There is a hairline fracture in the shoulder. In the coming few days, his pain will be managed through medications and other precautionary measures,” he said.

Mr. Dar is the leading member of the government of Shehbaz Sharif who is active both on domestic and international fronts.

He is also a confidante of former three-time premier Nawaz Sharif, with whom he is related due to the marriage of his son with Mr. Sharif’s daughter.

The elder Sharif is president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

A chartered accountant by education and training, Mr. Dar served as Finance Minister more than once in the previous governments of the PML-N.
