Star opener Smriti Mandhana, wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh and all-rounder Deepti Sharma were on Saturday named in the ICC Women’s T20I Team of Year 2024 which was dominated by the Indians. Besides the three Indians, the ICC team has two South Africans, and one player each from Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, Australia, Ireland and Pakistan. Mandhana and Deepti were also named in the ICC ODI Team of the Year 2024 on Friday. Mandhana had an outstanding 2024, beginning the year with a brilliant 54 against Australia as she finished the year with three consecutive half-centuries against the West Indies at home.

Her consistent performances propelled her to the second spot in the ICC Women’s T20I batting rankings, amassing 763 runs from 23 matches.

With eight half-centuries, including a highest score of 77, she maintained an impressive average of 42.38 and a strike rate of 126.53.

Richa’s explosive batting made her one of the standout performers for India last year, establishing her as one of the most exciting young talents in world cricket.

Having kicked off the year with a blistering 64 not out off 29 balls against UAE, she scored 365 runs with two fifites from 21 matches, at an average of 33.18, maintaining a strike rate of 156.65.

Deepti’s all-round contributions were key to India’s success in 2024.

With her off-spin, Deepti claimed 30 wickets at an average of 17.80, maintaining a tight economy rate of 6.01.

Her best performances included figures of 3/13 against Nepal and 3/20 against Pakistan in the Women’s Asia Cup, ensuring that she had a significant impact with both bat and ball throughout the year.

The ICC all-star team is captained by South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt, who led her team to significant victories, including a standout win over Australia in Canberra, where she scored 58 not out off 53 balls.

Wolvaardt’s remarkable performances earned her the No.5 spot in the ICC Women’s T20I batting rankings.

Wolvaardt is joined by her teammate and all-rounder Marizanne Kapp in the Team, having contributed both with the bat and ball.

She scored a brilliant 75 against Australia in January and a quickfire 57 against India in Chennai.

Kapp also claimed 11 wickets with her seam bowling.

Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu also made the cut having led her team to victory in the Women’s Asia Cup, scoring two centuries, including a match-winning 119 not out in the final against India.

The team also has West Indies all-rounder Hayley Matthews, England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt, Melie Kerr, the Player of the Tournament in their T20 World Cup triumph.

Kerr claimed 29 wickets in 18 matches at an average of 15.55. Her best performance was a 4/26 against Australia, which helped her team claim the title.

Irelish pace bowling all-rounder Orla Prendergast and Pakistani left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal complete the XI.

ICC Women’s T20I Team of 2024: Laura Wolvaardt (c), Marizanne Kapp (both SA); Smriti Mandhana, Richa Ghos (wk) and Deepti Sharma (all Indians); Chamari Athapaththu (SL); Hayley Matthews (WI); Nat Sciver-Brunt (England); Melie Kerr (Australia), Orla Prendergast (Ireland) and Sadia Iqbal (Pakistan). Sonam Yadav and G Kamalini powered India to a massive nine-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening Group A match of the inaugural U19 Women’s Asia Cup on Sunday. Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first at Bayuemas Oval but the move backfired them as they were restricted to 67/7 in 20 overs with Sonam Yadav returning with the figures of 4-6 in her four overs. For Pakistan, wicketkeeper-batter Komal Khan top-scored with a score of 24 studded with four boundaries as no other batter barring Fatima Khan (11) was able to reach a double-digit score.

India were completely disciplined in the bowling and bagged wickets at regular intervals to keep Pakistan at bay in the encounter.

Chasing a mere 68 total, India suffered an early hiccup as opener Gongadi Trisha was caught and bowled by Fatima Khan for a two-ball duck in the first over. However, Kamalini and Sanika Chalke scripted a match-winning 68-run partnership to take the side over the line in just 7.5 overs.

Kamalini, who was named Player of the Match, struck 44 not out off 29 balls laced with three sixes and four fours while Sanika was unbeaten for 17-ball 19 including three fours to give India a dominating start in the tournament.

India will next take on Nepal on December 17 while Pakistan will lock horns with the same opponents on December 16.

Brief scores: Pakistan 67/7 in 20 overs (Komal Khan 24; Sonam Yadav 4-6) lost to India 68/1 in 7.5 overs (G Kamalini 44 not out, Sanika Chalke 19 not out; Fatima Khan 1-22) by nine wickets.

The India-Pakistan clash in the women’s T20 World Cup here on October 6 set a new record for the highest attendance at a group stage match in the history of the showpiece, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Thursday. The match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, which India won by six wickets, was watched by 15,935 spectators. “The India versus Pakistan match at the Dubai International Stadium on 6 October set a new record for the highest attendance at a group stage match in Women’s T20 World Cup history,” the ICC said in a statement.

“This Group A clash in the 2024 edition drew an impressive crowd of 15,935, showcasing the intense rivalry between the two neighbours.” The world governing body also said that the women’s T20 World Cup 2024 drew 91,030 fans in total, an impressive 30 per cent increase from the previous edition.

“The thrilling final between New Zealand and South Africa at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday saw 21,457 fans in attendance, a remarkable 68% increase from the last final in South Africa,” the ICC said.

“The group stages and semi-finals also witnessed strong support, attracting 69,573 fans, a 21% rise compared to the previous edition, highlighting the expanding global appeal of women’s cricket.” The ICC said the big turnout was “an exciting indicator of the expanding interest in women’s cricket among new and diverse audiences”.

As the Pakistan women’s cricket team took on New Zealand in their final group stage match of the T20 World Cup 2024, it wasn’t just their own country that was cheering for them. On one of the rarest occasions, the Pakistan team also received support from across the border as the Indian team’s chances of semi-final qualification also relied upon their neighbours. However, Pakistan went on to produce one of the worst performances in the history of the tournament, losing the match by 54 runs, thanks to as many as eight dropped catches.

Pakistan restricted New Zealand to 110/6 in 20 overs but not before a whopping eight catching chances were put down and even a couple of run-out possibilities. Pakistan’s Fatima Sana herself dropped as many as 4 catches, most of them regulation as the Kiwis continued to ride their luck.

While chasing the target of 111 runs, Pakistan barely managed to get hold over their opponents’ bowling, with some poor shot selection and rouge style of play resulting in them being bowled out for 56. The total is the second worst in the history of Women’s T20 World Cups.

In an erratic display of cricket, especially in the field, even Pakistan’s former women’s team captain Sana Mir was stunned seeing the butterfingers display by her team.

“I’ve never seen this in 15 years of playing,” said Mir in the final over of the innings.

Pakistan’s Dropped Catches Against New Zealand: Overs 4.2, 5.2, 7.3, 15.5, 17.2, 19.1, 19.3 and 19.5

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana admitted in the post-match presentation ceremony that her team needs to improve fielding.

“We were good in the bowling but we need to improve our fielding and batting. We were not up to the mark in batting and the seniors need to step up in that kind of matches. As a bowling unit we were up to the mark, but we need to improve in batting, otherwise we can’t survive in women’s cricket,” she said.

Courtesy of New Zealand’s win, both India and Pakistan were knocked out of the semi-finals race.

India were eliminated from the Women’s T20 World Cup after New Zealand scripted a commanding 54-run victory over Pakistan in Dubai on Monday to reach the semifinals for the first time since the 2016 edition. India’s only chance to make the semifinals was depended on a Pakistan win with an inferior Net Run-rate compared to theirs. Pakistan were very much in the game after restricting New Zealand to a meagre 110 for six in 20 overs.

However, Pakistan’s batting crumbled badly as they were shot out for 56 in just 11.4 overs as White Ferns entered the semifinals with three wins from four games in Group A.

Australia topped the group with eight points while New Zealand came second with six points. The loss to New Zealand in their tournament opener effectively cost India a place in the last four.

Spinner Amelia Kerr took three wickets but it was seamers Lea Tahuhu (1/8) and Eden Carson (2/7) who opened the floodgates.

Pakistan were supposed to reach the target in less than 12 overs to qualify but they ended up being all out before that.

Earlier, Pakistan bowlers gave a good account of themselves restricting New Zealand to a modest total.

While openers Suzie Bates (28) and Georgia Plimmer (17) added 41 runs for the opening stand and just when it seemed that the duo has created a solid foundation, the Pakistani spinners suddenly applied the choke on the opposition.

The two spinners — off-break bowler Omaima Sohail (1/14 in 4 overs) and left-arm orthodox Nashra Sandhu (3/18 in 4 overs) — were brilliant through the middle overs with 21 dot balls and four wickets between them for only 29 runs.

India were left hoping old rivals Pakistan can rescue their Women’s T20 World Cup dreams after suffering an agonising nine-run loss to defending champions Australia on Sunday. Australia made sure of their semi-final spot by topping Group A with a perfect four wins from four matches. India, on four points after two wins and two losses, must hope that Pakistan beat New Zealand on Monday to leave the second semi-final place to be decided on net run-rate.

A win for the Kiwis, however, will put them into the last-four and eliminate India.

“It’s something which is not in our control,” admitted India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur.

“If we get the opportunity to play another game, that will be great. But otherwise, whoever deserves to be there, that team will be there.”

Six-time champions Australia overcame the absence of skipper Alyssa Healy to become the first team to guarantee a semi-final berth.

Tahlia McGrath led Australia after Healy dropped out with a foot injury, suffered while batting in a victory over Pakistan on Friday.

Healy’s replacement Grace Harris top-scored with 40 and McGrath hit 32 as Australia posted 151-8 after electing to bat first.

In reply, India finished on 142-9 with Kaur hitting an unbeaten 54 as she put on a fourth-wicket stand of 63 with Deepti Sharma, who made 29, and took the fight to the final over.

India needed 14 off the last six balls, but lost four wickets as Australian bowler Annabel Sutherland gave away just four runs.

The victory extended Australia’s winning streak to 15 in the tournament.

“We want to win every game we play,” said McGrath.

“We knew it was going to be a really big challenge for us today. They came really hard at us. I am just really proud of the group. We held our nerve at the end there.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan stand-in skipper Muneeba Ali said her team has not given up hope of squeezing into the semi-finals.

As well as beating New Zealand on Monday, Pakistan also have to significantly improve a run-rate which is inferior to that of both the Kiwis and India.

“We know that the pool is still open. We have a chance to win tomorrow’s match and if we win by a good margin, we have a chance to qualify for the semi-finals,” said Muneeba.

Pakistan will be boosted by the return of skipper Fatima Sana who missed the nine-wicket loss to Australia after briefly returning home following the death of her father.

‘Keep the momentum’

In Group B, England crushed Scotland by 10 wickets with openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge putting on an unbeaten century partnership.

England restricted Scotland to 109-6 in 20 overs after left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone returned figures of 2-13 in a disciplined bowling attack.

England romped home with 10 overs to spare as Bouchier hit 62 off 34 deliveries, earning herself player of the match honours as her team closed in on a semi-final spot.

Wyatt-Hodge smashed 51 off 26 balls in a commanding display by the 2009 champions.

A third successive win sent England top of Group B ahead of South Africa, who have three wins out of four, and the West Indies.

England face the West Indies on Tuesday in Dubai with the Caribbean side, champions in 2016, needing to win to stay in contention for the semi-finals.

“Just try and win, exactly the same way we have approached (the tournament so far),” skipper Heather Knight said of facing the West Indies.

“You want to keep winning, keep that momentum and we want to go again, get some momentum and make it to the semis.”

Scotland, who ended winless after qualifying for the tournament for the first time, and Bangladesh have already bowed out of the 10-team competition.

“Pretty tough tournament in general but a massive honour to be here and to be leading the team out in a tournament like this,” skipper Kathryn Bryce said. “Only learnings to be taken from here.”

India lost to Australia in the Women’s T20 World Cup Group A match© X (formerly Twitter)

India’s hopes of reaching the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals were dealt a massive blow as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side slumped to a 9-run loss against Australia in a crucial Group A encounter in Sharjah on Sunday. India were completely outplayed by Australia as Harmanpreet’s half-century could not clinch the match for her side. As a result, Australia qualified for the semifinals with 8 points from 4 matches but India’s fortunes still hangs in balance. India have 4 points from 4 matches with their losses coming against Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand have 4 while Pakistan have 2.

However, India can still qualify for the semis if Pakistan can beat New Zealand in the final Group A match on Monday. If Pakistan win, they will have 4 points along with India and New Zealand. However, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will qualify for the knockout stage thanks to a better Net Run Rate (NRR).

India lost to defending champions Australia by nine runs in their last group match to find themselves in a difficult position to qualify for the semifinals of the women’s T20 World Cup, on Sunday.

Chasing 152 for a win, India ended at 142 for 9 with captain Harmanpreet Kaur top-scoring with 54 not out off 47 balls. Deepti Sharma and Shafali Verma chipped in with 29 and 20 respectively.

India ended their Group A campaign on four points after two wins and two losses.

Australia, who topped the group with all four wins, qualified for the semifinals while New Zealand (4 points) need a win against Pakistan on Monday to make it to the last-four stage.

Opting to bat, Australia were restricted to 151 for 8 with opener Grace Harris top-scoring with 40 off 41 balls. Stand-in captain Tahlia McGrath and Ellyse Perry chipped in with 32 each.

For India, Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma took two wickets apiece while Pooja Vastrakar, Radha Yadav and Shreyanka Patil got one each.
