At least 31 people were killed and 169 were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a Shia mosque during Friday prayers in Pakistan’s capital, police sources said.

The powerful explosion occurred at Tarlai Imambargah in the Shehzad Town area of the federal capital.

The suicide bomber was stopped at the gate of the Imambargah, but he blew himself up, killing 31 people and injuring several others, they said.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.

However, police sources said that the attacker was a foreign national and had links with Fitna al Khwaraji, a term used for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Rescue teams and police rushed to the site of the attack and began rescue operations.

An emergency was declared in the hospitals of the capital to deal with the situation, as the injured were being shifted to hospitals.

The attack came less than three months after a suicide bomber killed 12 people in a blast outside a district and sessions court building in Islamabad.

Today’s attack came when Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was visiting Pakistan. He arrived on a two-day state visit on Thursday.

President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas condemned the attack.

“Targeting innocent civilians is a crime against humanity,” Mr. Zardari said.

Pakistan condemns attack

Strongly condemning the attack, Mr. Abbas said that targeting places of worship is a direct attack on humanity, religion and social values, which cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.

According to police officials, the nature of the explosion was being probed, but the explosion seems to be a suicide attack.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry visited the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) hospital in Islamabad and met the injured.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry strongly condemned the attack in a post on social media platform X, expressing grief over the loss of lives in the “cowardly act”.

“Such acts of terrorism cannot dampen the morale of the nation. The need of the hour is that we all stand united for peace, tolerance, and stability, and express solidarity with law enforcement agencies,” the Minister stressed.

Mr. Chaudhry is a native of Islamabad and belongs to the area where the blast occurred.

At least 12 people were killed and 20 others injured in a suicide attack outside a court in Pakistan’s capital on Tuesday (November 11, 2025), according to the state media.

The attack occurred near the entrance of the court complex in the G-11 area of the capital.

The rescue authorities have retrieved 12 bodies, state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) reported.

“The bodies of 12 individuals killed in the blast have been transferred to PIMS (Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences) Hospital,” it said on X.

It added that 20 injured individuals have been shifted to the emergency department of the PIMS Hospital.

PTV further reported that it was a suicide bombing. “The bomber’s head was found lying on the road,” it reported.

No group or individual claimed responsibility for the blast, but the attack came days after the third round of talks between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban failed to reach any agreement to tackle the issue of terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited the site of the blast and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the type of explosives used.”

A former Pakistan senator running in a by-election was killed on Wednesday along with four others in a targeted attack on their car near the border with Afghanistan.

“It appears that a remote-controlled bomb targeted the car carrying the former senator,” a district police spokesman told AFP, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media.

“An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the type of explosives used and who was behind it. But miscreants have stepped up their activities in the region lately.”

Former senator Hidayatullah Khan, his two companions and two police guards were killed in Bajaur district, just 45 kilometres (28 miles) from the Afghan border, in an area where militancy has been rising since the Taliban took control of Kabul in 2021.

The deadly blast took place ahead of by-elections due on July 11 in which he was running as an independent candidate.

In January, a candidate supporting jailed former prime minister Imran Khan was shot dead in the same district ahead of the general elections, in an attack claimed by the local chapter of the Islamic State group.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) — a separate group from the Afghan Taliban but with a similar ideology — and groups linked to it are the most active in the region, largely targeting security officials.

No group has claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack, which the TTP denied involvement in.

Last month, the government announced the launch of a new counterterrorism operation to support armed forces in their fight against militancy.

“At least two people were killed and 22 others injured when a suicide bomber rammed a vehicle laden with explosives against a convoy of the security forces in Pakistan’s restive northwest region on March 21,” police said.

The incident happened in the Dera Ismail Khan district of the country’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when the security convoy was on the move from one part of the district to another.

“In the suicide blast, at least two people were killed and 22 others injured. The two deceased are believed to be from the Army. However, it is not confirmed yet,” said a senior police officer. The injured have been shifted immediately to a nearby hospital.

The security forces and the police have rushed to the site and blocked the main Tank-Dera Ismail Khan road for all kinds of traffic. An official of the Bomb Disposal Squad said “we are determining the quantity of the explosives used in the suicide hit”.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is a very restive state and attacks on security forces occur very often. Last week, an armed group attacked a military post in northwestern Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan using a vehicle laden with explosives as well as suicide bombs, killing seven security force members.

In December last year, a total of 23 soldiers were killed when militants linked to a Pakistani Taliban affiliate rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a security forces’ post in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
