A clash on the restive border between Afghanistan and Pakistan killed one person and injured five, Pakistan officials said Wednesday (October 28, 2026).

The countries went to war earlier this year and, with no permanent resolution reached on security issues, there have been sporadic attacks since a March truce.

Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of harbouring militants responsible for deadly attacks on its territory, an allegation the Taliban government in Afghanistan denies.

Homes and shops were targeted in the market town of Angoor Adda during the cross-border fire from Afghanistan, according to the office of the deputy commissioner in Pakistan’s South Waziristan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

It blamed the “unprovoked” attack on Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities.

A senior administrative official in South Waziristan, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP the casualties were caused by mortar fire from Afghanistan.

Pakistani forces responded with a “brief operation targeting the Afghan side with artillery fire”, targeting an Afghan checkpoint, the official said.

They said they could not confirm any casualties on the Afghan side of the border.

A security official in Angoor Adda also confirmed the attack.

The governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Faisal Karim Kundi, condemned the “unprovoked and blatant aggression by the Afghan Taliban regime against civilian homes”.

Hundreds of civilians have been killed in fighting between the two countries since October last year, according to figures from the United Nations’ mission in Afghanistan.
