Julian Alvarez‘s strike helped Atletico Madrid move top of La Liga with 1-0 win over Osasuna on Sunday. Diego Simeone’s side climbed one point clear of champions Real Madrid and six ahead of third-placed Barcelona at the halfway mark in the Spanish league season. Atletico claimed a 14th consecutive victory across all competitions, a new club record, and have lost just one top-flight game all season. It was their eighth straight league win and a fifth clean sheet from those matches, with Simeone’s side back to their miserly best in defence. Atletico started well against an Osasuna side with several regular starters left on the bench, including their top scorer, striker Ante Budimir.

Antoine Griezmann had an early goal ruled out for handball, while his strike-partner Alvarez missed Atletico’s best chances of the first half.

The clearest came when Rodrigo De Paul scooped a pass over the top for the Argentina international, but Alvarez’s effort, which bounced awkwardly off his shoulder, was saved by Sergio Herrera.

Vicente Moreno‘s visitors, 11th, improved as the first half progressed and managed to keep Atletico largely at bay.

However early in the second half a clever Rojiblancos corner routine helped them break the deadlock.

Griezmann’s whipped cross to the back post was nodded back into the danger area by Clement Lenglet and Alvarez was able to slam home from close range for his sixth league goal since joining last summer from Manchester City.

Atletico were not at their very best but had more than enough to seal another victory and claim top spot, with Osasuna not troubling Jan Oblak.

Earlier Getafe earned a 2-1 win at Las Palmas to climb three points above the relegation zone.

Vinicius Junior scored a hat-trick to help Real Madrid bounce back from two consecutive home defeats with a 4-0 win over Osasuna in La Liga on Saturday. Hammered by Barcelona in a league Clasico and then outplayed by AC Milan in the Champions League, Carlo Ancelotti’s side badly needed this confidence-boosting victory at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Spanish and European champions thrashed Osasuna thanks to Vinicius’ treble, while Jude Bellingham scored his first goal of the season for Los Blancos.

However Madrid’s superstar striker Kylian Mbappe failed to find the net again and has scored one goal in his last seven matches, while Brazilian duo Eder Militao and Rodrygo were taken off injured along with Lucas Vazquez.

Second-placed Madrid reigned in Barcelona’s lead at the top of La Liga to six points before the Catalans visit Real Sociedad on Sunday.

“We won by a margin, we had a complete game in terms of work and effort, looking out for our team-mates, so I’m happy for the win that we needed,” Madrid attacker Brahim Diaz told Real Madrid TV.

“Madrid always have to win and we’d suffered two consecutive defeats…

“The fans deserved a victory, we can still give more, we are an incredible team.”

Ancelotti brought Rodrygo into the line-up after the Milan defeat, reverting to a 4-3-3 formation.

The Brazilian winger drew a save from Sergio Herrera but was forced off with a knee problem during an intense start to the match.

Militao was taken off on a stretcher before the half-hour mark holding the back of his right knee, after going to ground in Osasuna’s area.

The defender missed most of last season with a severe knee injury and with David Alaba, Aurelien Tchouameni and Dani Carvajal out hurt already, his departure was particularly bad news for Madrid.

Ancelotti replaced Militao with 21-year-old defender Raul Asencio, making his debut after progressing through the youth academy.

Despite the setbacks, Madrid took the lead in the 34th minute when Bellingham teed up Vinicus, who whipped home at the near post.

England international Bellingham, whose goals were vital for Madrid last season, broke his duck this campaign with a fine lob after Asencio played a fine long ball to send him running through on goal.

Vinicius netted his second after Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, in for the injured Thibaut Courtois, found the forward with a long ball and he rounded the goalkeeper to finish.

The Brazilian finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting despite being favourite to win the award at the end of October, losing out to Manchester City midfielder Rodri, but soon completed his second hat-trick in four games.

Brahim Diaz won the ball back deep in Osasuna territory and teed up Vinicius for a simple finish to complete the rout.

After Vinicius was replaced in the final stages Mbappe could play in his preferred position on the left flank but was unable to find the net as his personal travails continued, even as Madrid’s abated.

Los Blancos’ clean sheet helped end a run of nine goals conceded in three consecutive home matches.

Once Madrid had opened the scoring Osasuna, fifth, faded rapidly.

“We lacked intensity, rhythm… it was a game to forget,” admitted Osasuna’s Jon Moncayola, speaking to DAZN.

“(It was) 4-0 and they could even have scored more.”

Osasuna shattered La Liga leaders Barcelona’s perfect start to the season with an emphatic 4-2 victory on Saturday and their coach Hansi Flick said he would take the blame. The Catalans won all seven of their opening fixtures but Flick’s heavily rotated side came badly undone in Pamplona as Ante Budimir scored a brace either side of Bryan Zaragoza’s strike. Pau Victor had given Barca a lifeline to pull them back into the game before Budimir bagged his second from the penalty spot.

Abel Bretones added a sensational fourth from the edge of the box, before Lamine Yamal pulled one back with a fine effort of his own.

Victory would have matched Barcelona’s best ever start to a league campaign with eight consecutive wins, but they were not able to build on their four-point lead on second-place Real Madrid.

The Spanish champions visit Atletico Madrid, third, in a derby clash on Sunday.

“In the first half we made a lot of mistakes, it’s not normal we play like this — we had a lot of changes in the team and this is maybe one reason for that,” Flick told reporters.

“I think it was necessary. We had so many matches, a lot of players had so many minutes, I have to take care about that. This is my responsibility.

“If you want to blame someone for this defeat then take me.”

Ahead of a Champions League match against Young Boys on Tuesday, Flick felt he had to shuffle his pack, especially after Barca lost at Monaco in their European opener.

The coach, missing several key players through injury, handed starts to inexperienced defenders Gerard Martin and Sergi Dominguez as well as Pablo Torre in midfield and Victor in attack.

The coach rested Spain Euro 2024 starlet Yamal and Brazilian winger Raphinha among other regular picks.

As a result Barcelona failed to ignite in the first half and Osasuna winger Zaragoza took centre-stage.

Last season Zaragoza struck twice while playing for Granada in a 2-2 draw against Barca, a performance which helped earn him a move to Bayern Munich.

On loan from the German giants, Zaragoza created the opener for target-man Budimir with a fine cross, which the Croatian nodded home with ease in the 18th minute after escaping the attentions of Dominguez.

Zaragoza finished the second himself 10 minutes later after being sent through on goal, with the winger bypassing goalkeeper Inaki Pena with a fine ball roll and then slotting into the empty net.

Barcelona complained there had been a foul on Victor in the build-up but the referee waved their complaints away.

The leaders created little themselves, with the best opening falling to Ferran Torres. However the Spanish winger miscontrolled on the edge of the box and was quickly swallowed up by the Osasuna defence.

End-to-end

Victor pulled Barcelona back into the game after Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera gave the ball away with a poor throw and then could not keep out his early shot from distance.

With Yamal and Raphinha thrown into the fray Barcelona began to threaten increasingly, although top scorer Robert Lewandowski was taken off with 20 minutes remaining after a flat display.

Against the run of play Osasuna increased their lead.

Dominguez, 19, scythed down Budimir in the area as he went to shoot and the striker buried the penalty.

Ruben Pena wasted a glorious chance to grab a fourth but Bretones made no mistake with a vicious effort from the edge of the box.

Yamal hit back brilliantly from range and teed up Torres who struck the post, but it was too little, too late.

“It’s normal there are rotations, there are a lot of games, it’s not an excuse,” Barcelona midfielder Pedri told Movistar.

“In the second half we deserved a bit more but we let in goals when we were at our best.”

Osasuna rose to sixth and Zaragoza said his team had been determined to beat the leaders.

“We knew Barca were an incredible team, they had won everything and we knew we had to get stuck into it, and that’s how we went out there,” explained the winger.

“It’s a special game and really nice to play in.”

Earlier Real Sociedad defeated Valencia 3-0 and Getafe won their first game of the season with a 2-0 home victory over Alaves. Rayo Vallecano and Leganes shared a 1-1 draw.

Girona returned to winning ways by beating Osasuna 2-0 on Saturday to move back into second place in La Liga, as Atletico Madrid ceded further ground on the top three with a shock defeat at Cadiz. A goal inside the opening 15 minutes from Cristian Portu and a late Savinho strike allowed Girona to leapfrog Barcelona back into second spot. “Getting the three points at home is the most important thing to be at the top,” said defender Yan Couto. “Thanks to the fans for their support.”

Girona dominated the early exchanges against their 10th-placed opponents and were rewarded with just 13 minutes on the clock.

A clever slide-rule pass by Viktor Tsygankov set Portu free in the box and the Spaniard’s unerring first-time finish set Girona on their way.

Tsygankov nearly got a second assist three minutes after the break but his compatriot Artem Dovbyk could not supply the finish inside the box.

Daley Blind came close to doubling Girona’s lead just shy of the hour mark but his 12-yeard strike was well blocked by the Osasuna defence.

Savinho then struck in the 85th minute but the goal was disallowed for a foul committed by an team-mate.

However, the disappointment was short-lived for the Brazilian when he again netted two minutes later and this time it stood.

Miguel Gutierrez fed Aleix Garcia, whose backheel fell perfectly to the oncoming Savinho and he stabbed home a left-footed finish to put the game beyond Osasuna.

‘First dangerous situation’

Atletico Madrid were shocked by lowly Cadiz as Diego Simeone’s men sank to a 2-0 defeat on the south coast.

A brace either side of half-time from loanee Juanmi secured an invaluable three points for the 18th-placed Andalusian side and condemned Atletico to a seventh defeat this term.

“The team started well, with enthusiasm and the desire to generate good things, but in the first dangerous situation, Cadiz found the goal and another different game was presented,” said Atletico coach Simeone.

Atletico’s season has hit some turbulence and the loss follows on from defeat over two legs in the Copa del Rey semi-final against Athletic Bilbao and a 1-0 first-leg loss at Inter Milan in the Champions League last 16.

Spanish international striker Juanmi was left unmarked in the box to head in midway through the first half before he sealed the victory with a scuffed finish just after the hour mark.

The first period was defined by a litany of fouls as neither side was able to get into their groove.

Ruben Sobrino got to the byline on 24 minutes and his left-footed cross found the head of Juanmi, who gleefully headed home from five yards out to give Cadiz the lead.

Simeone rang the changes at half-time, replacing Memphis Depay as well as experienced midfielders Saul Niguez and Rodrigo de Paul but to no avail.

It was Juanmi, on loan from Real Betis, who was again the difference maker.

With 64 minutes gone, he latched onto Javi Hernandez’s long pass and outfoxed Jan Oblak with an untidy but effective volleyed finish.

The result pushes Cadiz closer to safety as they provisionally move to within two points of 17th place, while it leaves Atletico four behind Girona in third.

Real Sociedad required late goals from Robin Le Normand and Andre Silva to come from behind and win at second-from-bottom Granada.

Myrto Uzuni twice gave the hosts the lead in the first half, cancelling out Sadiq Umar’s equaliser just after the half-hour.

But Le Normand struck 10 minutes from time to level matters and Silva pounced in the 85th minute to nick a 3-2 win for the Basques.

Earlier, Valencia climbed to eighth with a 1-0 win at home to Getafe, courtesy of a clever lofted finish by Hugo Duro five minutes before the break.

Robert Lewandowski rolled home a late penalty to earn Barcelona a hard-fought 2-1 win at Osasuna in La Liga on Sunday. The striker won the penalty when he was tugged back in the box by Alejandro Catena, who was sent off. Barcelona took the lead through Jules Kounde’s header in the first half but Chimy Avila drilled the hosts level with less than 15 minutes remaining. Xavi brought on new loan signings Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix in the second half as Barcelona, third, stayed on league leaders Real Madrid’s tail — they are two points behind their arch-rivals after four games.

The coach started 16-year-old Lamine Yamal on the right wing again after his impressive display last weekend and his first call up to the Spanish national team on Friday.

However it was veteran forward Lewandowski’s penalty which was crucial for Barcelona this time.

“I think we lacked some good play, some patience, and we have to generate more in attack,” Barca coach Xavi told DAZN.

“The team worked hard, we really had to today, and the team suffered, but we won. We had the personality to suffer until the end and it’s always difficult to win at El Sadar.

“I’m happy with the team’s attitude … they are a very intense opponent. I’m content and satisfied with the victory.”

Barca should have taken the lead early on but Lewandowski fired wide with the goal gaping after Frenkie de Jong‘s effort rebounded off the post into his path.

Osasuna, often hard to beat at home, offered as good as they got in the first half.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen denied former Barcelona forward Jose Arnaiz at his near post and then thwarted Aimar Oroz, who should have done better when well placed.

Barcelona snatched the lead just before half-time when Kounde rose to nod Ilkay Gundogan‘s corner across goal and beyond the dive of Aitor Fernandez.

– New faces –
Xavi brought on new arrival Joao Cancelo just before the hour mark, with his Portuguese compatriot Joao Felix having to wait until the final stages for his debut.

By then Osasuna were level, with Avila dribbling across the face of the box without sufficient interference and firing past Ter Stegen.

Last season’s top scorer in La Liga, Lewandowski, who was having another frustrating night, turned it around by winning and converting a penalty to restore Barcelona’s lead.

The Polish forward hit the deck after Catena pulled his arm back, and the defender was sent off after a long VAR review, before the 35-year-old sent Fernandez the wrong way from the spot.

A third Barcelona debutant, centre-back Inigo Martinez, came on in stoppage time.

“We know it’s always very hard to win here, they’re a team with very good players and they put great intensity on,” said Kounde.

“(Felix and Cancelo) are two very good players with experience at a high level.

“They will give us a boost in an attacking sense, they both have very good technical ability.”

Girona climbed to second earlier Sunday after Portu‘s late strike earned the Catalan side a 1-0 win against promoted side Las Palmas, 18th.

The winger returned to Girona from Getafe this summer and made a swift impact after being given his second ‘debut’ as a substitute.

Atletico Madrid’s game against Sevilla was called off because of expected torrential rain in the Spanish capital, although the predicted downpour did not materialise in the time the game was scheduled to take place.

League leaders Real Madrid beat Getafe 2-1 on Saturday with another late Jude Bellingham winner, maintaining their 100 percent start to the season.
