Known as the “GST scam”, the case came to light in June 2023. (Representational)

Noida:

In a breakthrough in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) fraud case, the Noida Police on Wednesday said it has arrested two Haryana-based “billionaire businessmen” who allegedly masterminded the multi-crore revenue loss to the exchequer.

The accused are in the business of metal scrap and have collectively caused a revenue loss of around Rs 25 crore to the exchequer, a senior police officer said.

Known as the “GST scam”, the case came to light in June 2023 and pertains to revenue loss to the exchequer through input-tax credit (ITC) being claimed by thousands of bogus companies that were floated using forged documents.

The police investigation has shown the involvement of hundreds of bogus firms and transactions of around Rs 10,000 crore by those, and more than two dozen people have so far been arrested in the case, according to officials.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shakti Mohan Avasthy said a few months ago, a team from Noida’s Sector 20 police station busted a racket and arrested some suspects who were allegedly behind floating around 2,600 bogus companies.

“In pursuance of that case, the masterminds of the racket who fraudulently claimed ITC from the government and caused revenue loss to the exchequer were arrested on Wednesday. The masterminds are billionaire businessmen and have been identified as Sanjay Jindal and Ajay Sharma,” Avasthy told reporters here.

“Jindal runs a company by the name of AS Brownie Metal and Alloys located in Sonipat district of Haryana. He fraudulently claimed Rs 16.9 crore worth of ITC. This amount was later frozen by enforcement agencies. Sharma used six companies to cause a revenue loss of Rs 8.57 crore. This amount was also frozen later by the GST department following a report by the Noida Police,” the officer said.

Avasthy, who has been leading the investigation in the matter since it came to light, said both the accused are “billionaire businessmen” and have “huge businesses” in Sonipat.

Jindal and Sharma were wanted by the Noida Police for long and carried a reward of Rs 25,000 each on information leading to their arrest, the DCP added.

“Jindal and Sharma are the masterminds of the racket. They were the real beneficiaries of this fraud business of floating bogus companies and claiming ITC on their behalf. So far, we have arrested 32 people in connection with the case and some more linked to it will be held soon,” he said.

Police said an FIR was lodged at the Sector 20 police station under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating), 467, 468, 471 (all related to forgery) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).

Last month, the Noida Police attached assets worth approximately Rs 12 crore of the gang members involved in the GST “scam”, including immovable properties at multiple locations in Delhi.

The case came to light in June 2023 after thugs applied for the registration of bogus companies by fraudulently using the PAN details of a journalist and got two firms registered –” one in Punjab and one in Maharashtra — while the request for a third such company to be registered in Delhi was rejected by the GST authorities.

Snake venom case: Elvish Yadav is now in 14-day judicial custody. (File)

Bigg Boss OTT winner Elvish Yadav was arrested in the snake venom-rave party case and remanded to 14-day judicial custody on Sunday. Mr Yadav faces a case under the Wildlife Act in Noida for arranging snake venom at rave parties. The 26-year-old YouTuber, who initially denied any involvement in the case, has now admitted that he arranged snake venom at rave parties, said police sources.

What is the case?

The case surrounds the alleged use of snake venom as a recreational drug at rave parties in Noida last year. Mr Yadav is accused of arranging the snake venom at his parties and using snakes in his video shoots.

The police busted a snake smuggling racket in November last year after it raided a banquet hall in Noida Sector 51. Five people, including four snake charmers, were arrested from the banquet hall for supplying snake venom. Nine snakes including cobras and poison were also recovered from them.

A forensic investigation later revealed the use of venom of cobra and krait species in samples seized from there.

The breakthrough came after a trap was laid by an NGO, People For Animals.

A rave party is a vibrant dance party focussed on the youth-oriented rave culture, which often gets into trouble with authorities over drug use and safety reasons.

How Is Elvish Yadav Involved?

Questioned about the snakes in his video shoots, Mr Yadav has told the police those were arranged by Bollywood singer Fazilpuria, sources said.

The five people arrested in the case have told the cops that they used to supply snake venom at rave parties allegedly organised by Elvish Yadav.

Their arrest came after PFA member Gaurav Gupta complained to the police that he had contacted Elvish Yadav for snake venom as part of a trap. During the call, Mr Gupta was given a phone number after which he contacted the five accused, the police said.

Former Union minister Maneka Gandhi too had accused Mr Yadav of involvement in illegally selling snake venom and sought his immediate arrest.

What is snake venom addiction?

Snake venom addiction is an unusual form of substance abuse where individuals intentionally expose themselves to snake venom for intoxication effects. The venom can induce a range of symptoms like intoxication due to the neurotoxins present in it. This form of addiction, also known as ophidism, is extremely dangerous and life-threatening and is not a common practice in India.

The effects of snake venom can be unpredictable and potentially deadly and can last for days. In the long run, it may trigger physical and psychological dependence among users.

The use and possession of drugs, including substances derived from snake venom, are governed by the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985. But the cops have not invoked the NDPS Act against Mr Yadav as drugs were not found at the spot, according to an official.

The body bore injury marks around its neck, leading to a suspicion of murder.

Noida:

Three people, including a woman, were arrested here on Tuesday for allegedly killing a 57-year-old contractor inside his house, police said.

The police said the victim, Shashi Sharma, was allegedly in an illicit relationship with the wife of the key accused who was in good terms with him until two years ago.

According to the police, Mr Sharma’s body was found inside his rented accommodation in the Janata Flats in Sector 40 on Monday morning. The body bore injury marks around its neck, leading to a suspicion of murder.

DCP (Noida) Harish Chander said three accused, identified as Bharat Chauhan, his wife Seema Devi and Raja Tiwari, have been arrested for the alleged murder by a team led by ACP Rajneesh Verma.

“During investigation it came to light that Bharat and Sharma had come in contact in 2021, and both started living in the same neighbourhood. However, after sometime the same year, Bharat once found Sharma and his wife in an objectionable condition at his house. Later, he relocated to another house,” Mr Chander told reporters.

“Recently Bharat came to know that his wife and Sharma are still in contact, after which he confronted his wife who apologised for her actions,” the officer said.

Meanwhile, Bharat had started a tea shop and came in touch with Tiwari who studies at a private university in Noida. Tiwari visited Bharat’s stall regularly and the two became friends.

Bharath planned revenge on Mr Sharma and the other accused also came on board, according to the police.

On Sunday, the trio reached Mr Sharma’s residence and they discussed the matter, during which an argument broke out and Mr Sharma allegedly slapped Seema after which the three got together and slit his throat, the police said.

A majority of these schools have students enrolled up to Class 12. (Representational)

Noida:

The Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration on Wednesday ordered 14 schools to shut their operations with immediate effect after they were allegedly found to be running without any official recognition.

A majority of these schools, which have students enrolled up to Class 12, are in villages of Noida, District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) Dharmveer Singh said.

He said a survey of schools was conducted by the Uttar Pradesh government in recent days to find out if any institutes were operating in violation of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.

Dharmveer Singh said as per the law, it is mandatory for any entity involved in imparting formal education to be recognised by state authorities.

“During the survey in the district, 14 such schools were found to be in violation of the law and today, an order has been issued for them to shut operations with immediate effect. They were found running classes illegally and without having any recognition from authorities,” he told PTI.

“There have been serious lapses on the part of one school and I have issued directions to my department to ensure that an FIR is lodged against it by the police and legal action taken against it,” Me Singh said.

The officer warned of strict action against educational institutions operating in violation of laws.

According to the department, seven of these schools are located in Harola, four in Jalpura, and one each in Shahdara, Mangrauli and Chhijarsi. These schools on average have around 150 students enrolled.

There are over 2,000 recognised schools, including those affiliated to the CBSE, ICSE and Uttar Pradesh Boards, functioning across Noida and Greater Noida in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, the officials said.
