A young-Indian cricket team under National Cricket Academy head VVS Laxman left for Zimbabwe to play a five-match T20I series starting in Harare on July 6.

The team will be led by Shubman Gill while the likes of youngsters Riyan Parag and Abhishek Sharma have been rewarded for their exploits in the last IPL with maiden India call-ups.

Skipper Gill, the reserve opener for the T20 World Cup was on a break and will link up with the Zimbabwe-bound squad directly in Harare from the US.

The BCCI took to X to post pictures of those who boarded the flight, which includes Sharma, Parag, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, Tushar Deshpande and NCA head Laxman.

Five members of the squad — Shivam Dube, Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh and Khaleel Ahmed were either part of the T20 World Cup-winning team or were travelling reserves are stranded in Barbados due to hurricane Beryl. They will join the squad later.

With Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja retiring form the shortest format of the game, the T20 series against Zimbabwe will provide the youngsters with the perfect opportunity to cement their places in the team for future series.

Sudharsan, Jitesh and Rana added to India’s squad

The trio of Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma and Harshit Rana was on July 2 named as replacements for Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Indian squad for the first two matches of the T20I series against Zimbabwe.

Dube, Samson and Jaiswal, all part of the T20 World Cup-winning squad, were slated to join the Zimbabwe-bound group but are stranded in Barbados due to hurricane Beryl.

The trio is set to fly back home, along with the other players, aboard a charter flight on July 2 evening and arrive in India on Wednesday at 7.45pm (IST). The players will later be felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here.

The unforseen circumstances has forced BCCI to name replacements for the three players.

Pacer Khaleel Ahmed and batter Rinku Singh, travelling reserves for the T20 World Cup, are also currently in Barbados. The BCCI has not named replacements for the duo even though they are in the squad for Zimbabwe series.

Sudharsan is currently playing county cricket for Surrey at the Oval in London. He is expected to leave for Harare immediately.

India’s updated squad for first two T20Is against Zimbabwe

Shubman Gill (captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Tushar Deshpande, Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Harshit Rana.

Nitish Rana paid tribute to Gautam Gambhir on Instagram after Kolkata Knight Riders broke a ten-year drought to win their third IPL title in 2024. Gambhir returned to the KKR dugout ahead of the season, taking on the role of a mentor, after two years with the Lucknow Super Giants. His influence has clearly been enormous, with Rana hailing him. After two titles as KKR captain in 2012 and 2014, this is Gambhir’s first as a mentor of the franchise.

“In this era of Mamba Mentality, we’re soon all going to embrace the GG Mentality too,” captioned Rana on Instagram.

Rana also shared a screenshot of a conversation with Gambhir dating back to November 22, 2023, where Gambhir had spoken about “creating something special” in the season to come.

Rana has not been the only one to credit KKR’s success to Gambhir. Earlier in the season, Sunil Narine had also spoken about how Gambhir had been instrumental in convincing him to open the batting again.

Even owner Shah Rukh Khan offered a special thanks to Gambhir during KKR’s post-IPL 2024 Final celebrations, in a video on the team’s official YouTube Channel.

“My special thanks to GG (Gautam Gambhir),” Shah Rukh said. “I just have one request… we have to make GG dance tonight,” he joked.

Kolkata Knight Riders were dominant during IPL 2024, finishing with the highest Net Run Rate (+1.428) in IPL history. They bowled out the Sunrisers Hyderabad for a paltry 113 in the final on Sunday night, before cruising to victory with nearly half the innings to spare.

KKR’s resurgence upon Gambhir’s arrival has led to rumours circulating on social media tipping him as the favourite to succeed Rahul Dravid as India’s next men’s head coach. BCCI are yet to disclose their final shortlist of candidates.

As the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) vs Gujarat Titans (GT) clash was washed out, the 2-time champions were assured of a top-2 finish in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign. The result means KKR would be given two chances of sealing a spot in the final. As Knight Riders star Nitish Rana caught up with commentator Harsha Bhogle after his side’s match against Mumbai Indians, a hilarious conversation took place between the two. Rana, who hasn’t played much cricket this season due to injuries, gave an epic reply when informed by Harsha that he can’t take his eyes off his hands.

“Yeah, it’s fine now, but I can’t show it here on camera because it’s the middle finger (chuckles). I’m happy to be back in the team after missing 10 matches. It was a challenging period for me, as I’ve never sat out for so many games in the IPL. I’m grateful to the KKR management for their faith in me and their belief that I can still make an impact in the game,” Rana told Bhogle.

This season, Rana has faced a frustrating period on the sidelines after injuring himself in the first game of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The all-rounder missed 10 games in a row, with youngster Angrish Raghuvanshi taking his place in the side and delivering goods with the bat.

The left-handed batter made his comeback against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Saturday (May 11) in Kolkata and scored 33 runs in 23 balls.

As for the match against GT, rain played spoilsport, forcing the entire match to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. As points were shared, KKR strengthened their position at the top of the points table while Gujarat Titans were officially knocked out from the playoffs race.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) players took a short flight from Mumbai to Lucknow ahead of their next game of IPL 2024 on Sunday. After breaching the Wankhede Stadium, a venue where they hadn’t won against Mumbai Indians (MI) in 12 years, KKR have now set their sights on a league double over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), having beaten them at Eden Gardens earlier this season. During their match against MI, KKR were without emerging pacer Harshit Rana, who was serving a one-match ban for a Code of Conduct breach.

Harshit had been handed a one-match suspension along with a 100 per cent of his match fee fine for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during a match against Delhi Capitals.

The KKR pacer was found guilty of committing a Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. Rana admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction.

For the unversed, Harshit has made the headlines multiple time this season due to his “flying kiss” celebration. He had given a fiery send off to SRH batter Mayank Agarwal earlier during the season, and came close to doing the same to DC wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel.

However, former KKR captain Nitish Rana poked fun at Harshit during their flight to Lucknow. In a video shared by KKR on their official X handle, Nitish asked Harshit by saying, “How about another flying kiss?”

While Harshit couldn’t contain his laughter, he said “no” to Nitish’s request without any second thoughts.

During his last outing, Rana picked two wickets against DC. In total, he has bagged 11 wickets in eight matches.

With 12 points, KKR is currently ranked second in the rankings and has the highest NRR of any team in the competition, at 1.096.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ assistant coach Abhishek Nayar said on Thursday that Shreyas Iyer had taken some major disappointments, including an injury setbacks ahead of a crucial international season, in a “positive way” and will return to the grind of playing domestic cricket to come back stronger.

Iyer was grappling with a back problem ahead of IPL 2024 and there were reports he could even miss a few games for KKR in IPL 2024. But the skipper has come back strongly, scoring more than 250 runs, including a half century.

The BCCI also dropped Iyer from the annual central contract list.

“Mentally, to have a mindset like that after being rejected or not getting his due, he has taken it very positively. Even when he talks about it, he is not negative, he understands he needs to go back and do well,” Nayar told the media during KKR’s training session.

“His mindset is to score runs, whether he plays the IPL, the Ranji Trophy or for India. He looks to score runs, it (disappointments) has affected him but the way he has handled it, kudos to him because I can imagine a lot of people reacting very differently than he has,” he added.

“Having known him for a really long time, without any bias, he is one of the strongest people mentally I have ever known, just in terms of how he has accepted certain things that have happened with him.

“I would have seen a lot of people cribbing and talking about it, but I haven’t heard him whine about it or complain about it at all. The way he has approached life is in a positive manner, what is in front of you, you try and accept it.

“His fitness is in his control, and he is feeling a lot better now. He is great on the field, he is batting longer hours, he’s trained really hard. Our strength and conditioning (coaches) and physios have worked hard with him,” Nayar added.

Under Iyer’s captaincy, KKR have secured six victories in nine games and are placed second on the table with 12 points, which positions them strongly to progress to the playoffs. But Nayar did not want to commit anything.

“I wish I could tell you that 16 (points) is good or 14 is good, but we never know. I think this competition is one of the toughest in the world. It’s a two-month competition which is a long competition,” said Nayar.

He drew parallels between IPL and Ranji Trophy, saying teams have to perform consistently throughout the tournament to achieve their goals.

“I often think about it like a Ranji Trophy, wherein you have to constantly play well and it’s not so much about how you play the first half but it’s also as important to play the second,” he said.

“Just in terms of points, we have seen teams that have been at the bottom of the table do really well against table toppers. It’s very hard to say this is going to be safe and this is enough. The more (points) the merrier (it is) for any team,” Nayar added.

Giving an update on batter Nitish Rana, Nayar said no timeline had been set for his return from a finger injury.

“He is on his way back to recovery. We are hoping that he is fit soon. We don’t have the timelines yet. But hopefully, he (has) started batting now. Still, getting match-fit is something he is working towards,” Nayar said.

Nayar said the motivation to beat Mumbai on their home turf, be it the IPL or Ranji Trophy, drives several rival sides.

“…wanting to go out and beat Mumbai, whether it is Ranji Trophy or the IPL, everyone wants to beat Mumbai,” he said.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) vice-captain Nitish Rana is hopeful that star batter Shreyas Iyer can shrug off his injury concern and lead the franchise in IPL 2024. Iyer, who missed IPL 2023 due to injury, arrived at the KKR camp carrying a back issue. There has been rumours that Iyer might miss the first few games, with Rana set to lead KKR. Rana stepped up in Iyer’s absence and led KKR. However, the two-time champions failed to qualify for the playoffs, finishing seventh in the points table.

Addressing Iyer’s fitness issue, Rana hoped that the star batter can lead the team throughout the season.

“Shreyas is back with the team and is quite fit. Of course he had fitness issues in the past and we cannot take anything for granted. I hope I do not have to take up this responsibility again, as we are hoping Shreyas leads in all the matches. Having said that, if a situation arises where I
have to wear the captain’s band again, I am ready for it. I was made the captain last year and that was the biggest thing for me. Although we did not achieve everything we wanted, yet it was the greatest experience for me,” Rana told the Times of India.

Despite KKR finishing seventh last season, Rana revealed that there is real optimism in the dressing room that the two-time champions can go all the way this time.

“This time, our team is very positive and you can feel it in the dressing room. There is a determination to win, which wasn’t so strong last year. Everyone is thinking about the trophy,” he added.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) IPL 2024 squad: Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Shreyas Iyer, Phil Salt, Sunil Narine, Suyash Sharma, Anukul Roy, Andre Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakaravarthy, KS Bharat, Chetan Sakariya, Mitchell Starc, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Ramandeep Singh, Sherfane Rutherford, Manish Pandey, Mujeeb Ur Rehman, Dushmantha Chameera, Sakib Hussain.

After an underwhelming season last time around, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be eager to make a strong start to their Indian Premier League 2024 campaign under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer. At the mini-auction in December 2023, they spent a whopping INR 31.35 crore, with Mitchell Starc being their most expensive acquisition. In the previous edition, KKR finished in seventh place on the points table, winning six matches and losing eight. They have failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs since 2021.

However, the return of one of KKR’s favourite sons Gautam Gambhir will have lifted the team’s spirit. After his stint with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Gambhir will mentor the team he led to two IPL trophies as skipper.

Apart from acquiring the services of Starc for the upcoming season, Kolkata bought Chetan Sakariya, KS Bharat, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Ramandeep Singh, Sakib Hussain, Manish Pandey and Sherfane Rutherford at the mini-auction. Skipper Shreyas Iyer will also be back in the squad after being ruled out of the 2023 season due to an injury.

As per the IPL 2024 schedule released by the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI), Kolkata Knight Riders will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the league’s third match at their home ground in Eden Gardens on March 23.

With KKR gearing up for the upcoming IPL season, let’s have a look at their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Strength

Kolkata Knight Riders are among several teams in the IPL that possess an explosive batting lineup. Players like Phil Salt, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Shreyas Iyer, Rinku Singh, Dre Russ (Andre Russell), Sherfane Rutherford, Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana and Sunil Narine have shown their hard-hitting credentials in the past.

Even though Narine has not performed with the bat in recent seasons, he has consistently delivered with the ball in hand courtesy of his spin wizardry that has left batters spellbound over the years. His spin partner Varun Chakravarthy is another effective spinner that the KKR team management can unleash on the spin-friendly pitches at Eden Gardens. He bagged 20 wickets in IPL 2023 and will be hoping to enjoy another solid season in 2024.

Besides Narine and Chakravarthy, the Knight Riders have also acquired the services of Mujeeb Ur Rahman. The Afghanistan right-arm off-break bowler is the youngest player in the history of ODI cricket to take a five-wicket haul and he’s certain to add to the variety of options in KKR’s spin armoury.

Weakness

A formidable batting lineup and a strong spin attack are not the only factors that are crucial for a team to win the IPL. Pacers also play a key role in guiding teams to victory and their role, especially in the death overs cannot be overstated. Containing batters in the backend of the innings is something KKR has struggled with their pacers in the past and we’ll have to wait and watch how they fare in IPL 2024.

They bought Mitchell Starc for a whopping INR 24.75 crores at the mini-auction but released Umesh Yadav, Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee. As a result, the team management will be heavily dependent on the experience and performance of Mitchell Starc.

The overreliance on the Aussie pacer could be a major cause for concern for the Knight Riders. The two-time champions have added Chetan Sakariya and Dushmantha Chameera to their fast-bowling unit but both of them don’t come with much experience of playing on the IPL stage.

Opportunities

The return of Shreyas Iyer and Gautam Gambhir to the KKR family will be a massive boost. Shreyas missed out on captaining the Knight Riders due to a back surgery last year. However, he has shown good form since his return from injury last year and will be hoping to thrive under Gambhir’s mentorship.

Another positive for KKR is their numerous finishers like Rinku Singh, Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell. These batters have shown how devastating they can be when in full flight by demonstrating that they can get their team over the finish line with their power-hitting in nail-biting contests.

Threat

Andre Russell is one of the most important players in the team and when on song, the Jamaican all-rounder has shown that he can get the better of any opposition. But lately, his form has been a bit erratic with factors such as injuries, lack of consistency and the added burden on expectations seeming to weigh heavily on his big shoulders.

Sunil Narine could perhaps also do a bit better with his batting after failing to contribute significantly in recent times. Needless to say, the two former West Indies internationals need to come good if KKR want to enjoy success in IPL 2024, given the impact the Caribbean duo can have when playing at their best.

Probable Playing XII

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Venkatesh Iyer, Shreyas Iyer (c), Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mitchell Starc, Chetan Sakariya, Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana, Manish Pandey (impact sub)

Veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and a fully-fit Mohsin Khan’s superb bowling effort was complemented by Nitish Rana’s power-packed half-century as Uttar Pradesh comfortably beat Gujarat by six wickets to enter the quarter-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament in Mohali on Tuesday. Batting first, UP bowlers were bang on target as Gujarat managed a below-par 127 for 8 in 20 overs. UP crossed the target with eight balls to spare and never looked under pressure with Rana smashing unbeaten 71 off 49 balls.

Bhuvneshwar, who has now been out of national reckoning for more than a year, gave nice exhibition of seam and swing bowling to pick up 3 for 21 in four overs while the lanky left-arm fast bowler Mohsin pegged the Gujarat batters back with pace and bounce to end with figures of 2/13.

Kartik Tyagi, one of the fastest pacers in the Indian domestic circuit, also regularly breached the 140 clicks to take 1 for 27. Saurav Chauhan (32 off 21 balls) was the only notable scorer for the losing team.

In reply, UP quickly lost a couple of wickets to be reduced to 22 for 2 at start of the fourth over but Rana along with Sameer Rizvi (30 off 39 balls) added 81 runs in 12.1 overs to put the team on the cusp of victory.

Rana’s innings had seven fours and two sixes — one each off pacer Chintan Gaja and off-spinner Arya Desai.

It was Dhruv Jurel (13 not out), who ended the proceedings, hitting a four and a six off left-arm pacer Arzan Nagwaswalla, best known for being one of Indian Test team’s regular net bowlers.

Brief Scores: Gujarat: 127/8 in 20 overs (Saurav Chauhan 32 off 21 balls, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/21, Mohsin Khan 2/13).

UP: 130/4 in 18.4 overs (Nitish Rana 71 not out off 49 balls, Sameer Rizvi 30 off 39 balls, Ravi Bishnoi 2/29).
