Market benchmark indices ended sharply higher on Friday (July 17, 2026) , with the Sensex climbing 964.58 points and the Nifty reaching the 24,330 level, led by buying in blue-chip Reliance Industries, bank and IT stocks.

After a subdued ending in the previous trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex bounced back 964.58 points, or 1.25%, to settle at 78,151.45. During the day, it surged 1,095.68 points, or 1.41%, to 78,282.55. The 50-share NSE Nifty climbed 261.55 points, or 1.09%, to end at 24,334.30.

From the Sensex pack, Tech Mahindra jumped 3.91% after it reported a 28.4% rise in consolidated net profit for the June quarter to ₹1,465 crore, and expressed confidence about the demand environment.

Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, Reliance Industries, Hindustan Unilever, Mahindra & Mahindra, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and Bajaj Finance were also among the winners. Reliance Industries is scheduled to announce its June quarter earnings later in the day. Sun Pharma, Trent, Bharti Airtel and UltraTech Cement were among the laggards.

“There is a shift in market momentum, with strong traction moving toward large-cap stocks, led by the IT and banking sectors. This is supported by optimism around business updates and Q1 earnings expectations,” Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said.

The trend appears to be driven largely by domestic institutional investors rotating out of expensive mid and small-cap stocks and into more attractively valued large caps that offer a better risk-reward profile, he added.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, climbed 1.79% to $85.52 per barrel. “Indian equity markets ended the week on a strong note, extending their recovery as broad-based buying in heavyweight banking, financial, and IT stocks helped benchmark indices outperform weak global cues. Investor sentiment remained resilient despite persistent concerns over elevated AI valuations, ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East (West Asia), and heightened volatility in global markets,” Ponmudi R., CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm, said.

Expectations of healthy quarterly earnings from index heavyweights, including Reliance Industries and leading private sector banks, further supported the positive momentum, he added.

In Asian markets, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai’s SSE Composite index and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index ended significantly lower. Markets in South Korea were closed on Friday (July 17, 2026). Markets in Europe were quoting in negative territory in mid-session deals. U.S. markets ended lower on Thursday (July 16, 2026).

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹4,205.56 crore on Thursday (July 16, 2026), according to exchange data. On Thursday (July 16, 2026), the Sensex edged up 1.44 points to settle at 77,186.87. The Nifty dipped 5.75 points, or 0.02%, to end at 24,072.75.

Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closed almost unchanged on Thursday (July 16, 2026), as profit-taking in blue-chip stocks such as HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries offset gains in IT shares amid geopolitical tensions.

The 30-share BSE Sensex edged up 1.44 points to settle at 77,186.87. During the day, it climbed 394.26 points, or 0.51%, to 77,579.69 but pared gains towards the end of the session. The 50-share NSE Nifty dipped 5.75 points, or 0.02%, to end at 24,072.75.

In Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi tanked 6.37%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index and Shanghai’s SSE Composite index also settled lower, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index ended higher. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, dipped 0.39% to $84.62 per barrel. Fluctuating oil prices and weak Asian market trends also weighed on domestic equities, according to an expert.

“Indian equities concluded largely subdued as investors remained cautious amid geopolitical uncertainties, fluctuating oil prices, and weak Asian market trends,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited. Meanwhile, cooling U.S. inflation eased rate concerns and offered downside support, he added.

Markets in Europe were trading lower. U.S. markets ended higher on Wednesday (July 15, 2026). Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹735.83 crore on Wednesday (July 15, 2026), according to exchange data.

Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty climbed during initial deals on Thursday (July 16, 2026) led by IT stocks and hopes that the U.S. Federal Reserve may adopt a less aggressive monetary policy stance in the coming months following a softer-than-expected inflation data.

The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 185.77 points to 77,400.40 in early trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty went up by 42.15 points to 24,132.60.

Eternal, Bajaj Finserv, Axis Bank, and Bharat Electronics were among the laggards. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, quoted 0.31% lower at $84.69 per barrel.

“With no major changes in crude prices and global markets holding steady, our market is likely to trade in a narrow band with a positive bias. With many companies reporting their Q1 results in the coming days, the market is likely to respond to the results,” V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited said.

In Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi tanked 6.31%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index and Shanghai’s SSE Composite index also quoted lower, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index traded higher.

U.S. markets ended higher on Wednesday (July 15, 2026). “Overnight, U.S. markets finished higher, with the S&P 500 gaining 0.38% and the Nasdaq adding 0.62%, supported by strength in mega-cap technology stocks and softer U.S. wholesale inflation data that eased concerns over further policy tightening,” Rajesh Palviya, Head of Research, Axis Direct, said.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹735.83 crore on Wednesday (July 15, 2026), according to exchange data.

On Wednesday (July 15, 2026), the Sensex climbed 130.49 points, or 0.17%, to settle at 77,185.43. The Nifty went up 26.45 points, or 0.11%, to end at 24,078.50.
