India pace bowler Arundhati Reddy was on Monday reprimanded for giving an aggressive send-off to Pakistan’s Nida Dar during their Women’s T20 World Cup contest. Reddy had taken three wickets in India’s six-wicket win over the arch-rivals on Sunday. She let emotions get the better of her after castling Dar in the 20th over of the Pakistan innings as she gestured in the direction of the pavilion.

“Reddy was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match’,” said the ICC in a statement.

“In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Reddy’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.” Reddy admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction.

On-field umpires Eloise Sheridan and Lauren Agenbag, third umpire Jacquline Williams and fourth umpire Claire Polosak levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

When a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned.

After conceding a six-wicket defeat against India, Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana on Sunday said that they weren’t up to the mark with batting in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 game. Fatima Sana played a 13-run knock from 8 balls at a strike rate of 162.50, She slammed two fours during her time on the crease. Speaking after the match, Sana said that Pakistan fell short of 10-15 runs. She also hoped that they could do well in the upcoming matches of the ICC tournament.

“Weren’t up to the mark with batting. We were at least 10-15 runs short. Hopefully, next match we can do well. I enjoyed playing against the Indians, and enjoyed my time here,” Sana said after the end of the match.

Recapping the game, Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat against India in the seventh match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Nida Dar (28 runs from 34 balls, 1 four) and Muneeba Ali (17 runs from 26 balls, 2 fours) were the only top batters for the Women in Blue as propelled their side to 105/8 in the first inning.

The Indian bowling attack displayed a stunning performance and was successful in picking crucial wickets in the first inning.

Arundhati Reddy led the Indian bowling attack after she picked up three wickets in her four-over spell at an economy rate of 4.80. All the Indian bowlers managed to get wickets in the game. However, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side displayed a poor performance while fielding as they missed plenty of catches.

During the run chase, Shafali Verma (32 runs from 35 balls, 3 fours) and Harmanpreet Kaur (29 runs from 24 balls) helped India clinch a massive six-wicket win over Pakistan.

In the 18th over, India crossed the 100-run mark after Kaur smashed a four through the extra cover.

In the 19th over, when India came closer to winning the crucial match, Skipper Harmanpreet suffered a neck injury which forced her to walk off the field.

S Sajana came in place of Kaur and slammed the ball to the left of mid-off for a four to end the match in favour of the Women in Blue.

Arundhati Reddy was named the Player of the Match after she displayed a stunning performance with the ball in the first inning.

The Indian bowling unit fired in unison against a clueless Pakistan, restricting the arch-rivals to a lowly 105 for 8 in their second group league game of the Women’s T20 World Cup on Sunday. Having conceded 160 against New Zealand on a slow track under lights in their opener, the Indian bowlers read the pitch well, and more importantly, took the pace off deliveries to make stroke-making all the more difficult. Such was their control that Indian bowlers were able to deliver 58 dot balls.

Seamers Renuka Singh Thakur (1/23) and Arundhati Reddy (3/19) neither erred in line nor in length while off-spinners Deepti Sharma (1/24) and Shreyanka Patil (2/12) got enough grip and bounce to keep the Pakistani batters on tenterhooks. Reddy even gave Pakistan’s Nida Dar an angry send-off.

Leg-spinner Asha Sobhana (1/24) went for a few boundaries but got rival skipper Fatima Sana with a big leg-break after the batter was brilliantly snapped by Richa Ghosh behind the stumps.

Renuka bowled a tight first over and her inswinger had Gull Feroza (0) bowled through the gate.

Deepti, who gave a much better account of herself, albeit against an inferior batting lineup, decreased the pace of her deliveries and also flighted a few.

Sidra Amin (8 off 11 balls), who wanted to get a move on, tried to slog sweep one but the ball bounced off her pads and rolled onto the stumps.

Pakistan managed only 29 for 2 in the powerplay and the Indian bowlers increased their stranglehold on the opposition batters.

Arundhati was unlucky as Asha dropped a dolly when opener Muneeba Ali’s (17) ramp scoop was there for the taking. Reddy, however, had Omaima Sohail in the same over when the right-hander’s uppish drive was easily taken by Shafali Verma at mid-off.

The left-handed Muneeba was dismissed when she tried to give Shreyanka the charge and the off-spinner cleverly shortened the length and also got the ball to turn enough for Richa to complete the stumping.

Tottering at 41 for 4 at the halfway stage, Pakistan batters were unable to even push the ball in the gaps, and it was veteran Nida Dar’s 28 off 34 balls that took them past 100-run mark.

Former Pakistan women’s cricket team skipper Nida Dar took to social media to praise the Indian men’s cricket team for winning the T20 World Cup and even hailed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli – two star players who retired from the format following the competition. However, the problem is that it came more than two months after the final took place. India defeated South Africa to clinch the T20 World Cup trophy on June 29 and the performance was lauded by both fans and experts alike. As a result, her social post caught everyone by surprise and users were quick to troll her.

“Congrats to India on winning the @T20WorldCup 2024! A special shoutout to @ImRo45 @imVkohli for their immense contributions to world cricket. Your leadership, skill, and dedication have inspired millions around the world. Happy retirement, legends!,” Nida’s post read.

The post had pictures of Virat and Rohit along with the trophy and another one of Rahul Dravid.

However, she deleted the post from her social media account.

Meanwhile, in men’s cricket, Pakistan dropped two places in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings, falling to eighth position following a 0-2 series defeat at home to Bangladesh.

This is Pakistan’s lowest rating points in the Test rankings since 1965, excluding a brief period when they were unranked due to insufficient matches.

Pakistan was ranked sixth before two-match series against Bangladesh, however, back-to-back losses on home soil have seen them slide below the West Indies, now sitting with 76 rating points.

This decline underscores a worrying trend for Pakistan in home Tests, where they have failed to secure a victory in their last ten matches, dating back to February 2021.

In that period, Pakistan has lost six matches and drawn the remaining four, with series defeats against Australia, England, and now Bangladesh.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has named 22-year-old Fatima Sana as their captain, replacing Nida Dar for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in UAE from October 3-20. The 37-year-old Nida is going through a lean patch and the team under her suffered T20I and ODI series defeats in England before making a semi-final exit in the Women’s Asia Cup last month. The selectors however have retained Nida in the squad that has at least 10 players who appeared in the last edition of the global showpiece.

Bowling allrounder Fatima, who has featured in 41 ODIs and 40 T20Is, has previously led Pakistan emerging and domestic sides.

She also captained Pakistan to a famous ODI win against New Zealand in a Super Over in Christchurch, in December 2023.

Pakistan have been clubbed with Australia, India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Group A.

The selectors have also recalled right-handed batter Sadaf Shamas, who was also part of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa in place of wicketkeeper-batter Najiha Alvi, who will travel as a reserve player.

Squad: Fatima Sana (captain), Aliya Riaz, Diana Baig, Gull Feroza, Iram Javed, Muneeba Ali (wicket-keeper), Nashra Sundhu, Nida Dar, Omaima Sohail, Sadaf Shamas, Sadia Iqbal (subject to fitness), Sidra Amin, Syeda Aroob Shah, Tasmia Rubab and Tuba Hassan Traveling reserve: Najiha Alvi (wicket-keeper); Non-traveling reserves: Rameen Shamim and Umm-e-Hani.
