Relentless rainfall across Nepal since Thursday (September 24, 2026) has triggered fresh floods and landslips, swept away houses and disrupted road traffic, according to a media report, as the Himalayan country reels from the disaster that killed at least 1,453 people and more than 5,000 remain missing.

The bodies of 1,451 people have been recovered till Saturday (September 26, 2026) a month after flash floods, originating near the Nepal-Tibet border, devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). Two others had died while undergoing treatment.

A total of 13,795 people have been rescued till Saturday, the NDRRMA said.

In Rupandehi district, a part of Lumbini province, floodwaters from the Tinau River swept away six houses along the riverbank in Butwal on Saturday night as the river rose above its danger level, the Kathmandu Post newspaper reported.

A police official was quoted as saying that around 200 houses along the riverbank in Butwal were at risk, with security personnel evacuating about 1,000 people overnight after the Tinau and nearby streams swelled amid continued rain.

Authorities initially moved around 500 residents from Majhuwa, a high-risk area in Butwal Metropolitan City-13, to the Durga Temple holding centre, the report said. They were later transferred to safer locations, in various schools in Butwal-11.

The Tinau River crossed its danger mark at around 8 pm on Saturday, prompting security personnel to begin rescue and evacuation operations.

Rivers cross danger levels

The Rupandehi district administration has urged people living near rivers and streams to remain alert and move to safer areas if water levels rise further.

In Chitwan district of Bagmati province, the Narayani River and the Riu stream crossed their danger levels early on Sunday as rain continued.

At the Devghat gauge station, the Narayani River reached 9.23 metres at around 5.15 a.m., according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. The warning level there is 7.3 metres, and the danger level is 9 metres.

The Riu, which flows along the boundary of Madi and Chitwan National Park, reached 3.92 metres. Its warning level is 3.4 metres, and its danger level is 3.8 metres, the Kathmandu Post reported.

The Riu flows through southern Chitwan before joining the Rapti River near Meghauli and eventually draining into the Narayani.

Heavy rain has also triggered landslips and mudslides at several points in Chitwan, disrupting road traffic.

At Dharapani in Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality-4, part of the road subsided further, and a mud-laden landslip blocked traffic in both directions, a police official said.

A landslip at Simaldhara in the same municipality has also blocked the road in both directions.

Flood and landslip risks also remain high in Karnali, where river levels have continued to rise.

The Thuli Bheri River in Dolpa had reached 3.46 metres, just below its 3.56-metre warning level and 3.76-metre danger level, with the water level still rising.

In Humla, the Karnali River at Sarkegad stood at 2.74 metres, below its 4-metre warning level, but was rising. The river level at Biunhidhanda was 2.42 metres.

The Mugu Karnali stood at 5.1 metres, below its 7.5-metre warning level and 9-metre danger level, with the water level rising.

A landslip has blocked the Nagna-Gamgadhi road at Jharikhola in Mugu, the report said.

In Kalikot, a mudslide at Gagne Khola in Shubhakalika Rural Municipality-1 has blocked the Karnali Highway. The Tila Karnali there stood at 3.27 metres, below its 5-metre warning level and 5.45-metre danger level, with the river level falling.

Landslides have also disrupted traffic along the Karnali Corridor at Khaccha in Sarkegad-1, Gopchegauda in Kharpunath-1 and Yalwang in Namkha-4 in Humla.

In Jumla, water levels in the Tila Karnali and Sija rivers remained stable at 3.74 metres and 2.86 metres, respectively.

With rain continuing, authorities across affected districts have urged residents in flood- and landslip-prone areas to remain alert and move to safety when necessary.

On Saturday, flooding from the Narayani and Saptakoshi rivers inundated 389 houses in Nawalparasi West and Saptari districts, forcing hundreds of families to move to safer locations.

At least 62 people were killed and 90 others sustained injuries in rain-related incidents across Nepal over the past four weeks since the onset of the monsoon season, according to home ministry officials on July 7.

The primary causes of these monsoon-related deaths are landslides, floods, and lightning strikes, they said.

Of the fatalities, 34 people were killed by landslides, while 28 succumbed to floods resulting from incessant rains. Additionally, seven individuals are reported missing in connection with these natural calamities, the officials said.

The heavy rains and subsequent floods and landslides have caused significant property damage as well. At least 121 houses have been inundated, and 82 others have been damaged. The natural disasters have displaced a total of 1,058 households across the country.

In response to the crisis, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has directed all state mechanisms to prioritise the protection of lives affected by monsoon floods, landslides, and inundations.

During a briefing at the Singha Durbar-based control room on Sunday, the prime minister instructed all state agencies to focus on the rescue and relief efforts for citizens impacted by these natural disasters.

He also urged all citizens to remain vigilant against potential disasters and called upon political parties, civil societies, and social organisations to collaborate in mitigating disaster risks and ensuring the safety of the citizens.

Meanwhile, all the gates of Gandak barrage have been opened after the water level in Narayani river rose to above the warning level, MyRepublica news portal reported.

The flow of water in Gandak barrage was measured at 440,750 cusecs at 7:00 am in the morning.

Quoting the Saptakoshi Water Measurement centre, the report said 41 sluice gates of the Koshi barrage have been opened after the flow of water increased to warning levels.

At least two workers building a tunnel at a hydropower project in Nepal were killed and ten injured as heavy rain lashed Kathmandu and other parts of the country on July 5 and 6, officials said.

Two labourers died on July 5 after they were buried in the tunnel of the under-construction Bhotekoshi Hydropower Project in Sindhupalchowk district, 125 km East of Kathmandu.

Their bodies have been recovered.

As many as 12 workers were buried when the dam side tunnel of Jhirpu Electro Power Company Limited, which is under construction in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality, collapsed following heavy rainfall.

The police said 10 workers were injured in the incident. The injured were rescued and admitted to a local hospital for treatment.

Separately, an 18-year-old boy went missing after the Rapti River in the Dang district of Western Nepal swept him away.

However, two other men who were stranded on a tree near the swollen river were rescued by security personnel, according to the police.

A woman has also gone missing in Dolakha district, about 180 kilometres East of Kathmandu, after being swept away by the flooding river.

The police have started a riverbank patrolling after the water level of rivers in the Kathmandu Valley increased alarmingly in the wake of incessant rainfall.

Most places in Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces received light to moderate rain while heavy rainfall occurred in a few places of Bagmati, Koshi, Gandaki and Karnali.

The flood in the Hanumante river in Bhaktapur district near Kathmandu triggered by heavy rainfall has reached above the danger level and started entering the local residential areas.

More than 600 houses are at risk due to the swelling river, said the police.

Dinesh Raj Mainali, the spokesperson at the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, said the police have started patrolling to prevent untoward incidents along the river corridors in the Valley.

“We mobilised police teams on the banks of rivers and streams, considering the possible risks of floods and inundations in the nearby settlements.”

The police vehicles are on constant watch along the riverside — Bagmati, Bishnumati, Manohara and Hanumante rivers, the spokesperson said.
