Former India batter Navjot Singh Sidhu said that the upcoming Champions Trophy clash between India and Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday is going to be the “mother of all battles”. The veteran commentator added the team that will perform better under pressure has the chance of winning the blockbuster encounter. “It is the mother of all battles. There’s nothing bigger than this. I think it’s the tension that holds everybody together. When 150 crore people expect a win from you, they will never swallow a defeat. There is a culture of retribution. This game is played more between the ears than between the hands – it’s a psychological battle. There’s plenty of nervous energy floating around, but the side that converts it into positive energy is the side that will win,” Sidhu said on a special episode of JioHotstar’s Greatest Rivalry Returns.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also shared his thoughts on the blockbuster match and remembered his first experience of playing against Pakistan in 2003.

“It’s one of the greatest ODI games I’ve played. My friend Shahid Afridi welcomed me with a lot of ‘kind words’ in that game. That was when I truly understood what the India-Pakistan rivalry meant. Watching it on TV was one thing, but playing in it was completely different. I remember the immense pressure, but performing well in that game gave me the confidence to become a better player in the future,” he said.

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi added on the incident and revealed what happened in that match.

“Yuvraj was young at the time, just finding his place in the team. We had the opportunity to play alongside legends like Inzamam-ul-Haq bhai and Wasim Akram bhai, who taught us how to fight on the ground, how to win matches, and how to unsettle the opposition,” he said.

“Our seniors used to tell us, ‘Show the opposition your eyes. Put pressure on them.’ But Yuvraj is the son of a Sardar – he doesn’t take pressure. He came in with confidence, and despite everything we said, he focused on his batting and handled it very well,” the former all-rounder added.

Adding on to the rivalry with India, Afridi termed it a “golden opportunity” for youngsters to shine in the match.

“For a cricketer, an India-Pakistan match is a golden opportunity, especially for youngsters. It was always my dream. Before a match, I couldn’t sleep at night – I would think about my performance and how I couldn’t afford to miss this chance. Even if I hadn’t performed in the last five or six matches, if I did well in an India-Pakistan game, everything would be forgiven. That’s how big this rivalry is,” he said.

Yuvraj added, “No matter the format, an India-Pakistan game always feels like a final- whether it’s a group match, a semifinal, or the championship itself. The pressure is immense. You don’t want to lose because it sets the tone for the tournament. Winning builds momentum and confidence. I remember the last time I played in the Champions Trophy, we beat Pakistan in the first game, but they beat us in the final. So, nothing is guaranteed. But starting with a win on such a big stage, with the whole world watching, is crucial.”

Pakistan lost to New Zealand by 60 runs in the tournament opener while India are taking on Bangladesh in their opening match in Dubai.

Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has criticised the Indian team management’s decision to exclude skipper Rohit Sharma from the pivotal fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Rohit “opted” to rest for the match and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah stepped in as captain for the Sydney Test. He had previously led India to a win in the opening Test in Perth. Sidhu believes captain should never be dropped midstream nor given the option to opt out— as it sends wrong signals. Drawing comparisons to past captains like Mark Taylor and Mohammad Azharuddin, who were retained despite poor form, Sidhu argued that Rohit deserved similar treatment.

“A Captain should never be dropped midstream nor given the option to opt out … sends wrong signals …. Have seen Captain s like Mark Taylor , Azharuddin etc persisted as captain for a year despite bad form …. @ImRo45 deserved more respect and faith from the management … Bizarre coz it happened for the first time in Indian cricket history …. Blunder – for a fallen lighthouse is more dangerous than a reef!” Sidhu posted on X.

Rohit has been under scrutiny following a string of losses as captain. India’s performance had dipped significantly, with the team losing five of its last six Tests under his leadership. The most glaring low point was a 3-0 home series defeat to New Zealand last year, ending a 12-year unbeaten streak on Indian soil.

However, despite these setbacks, many, including Sidhu, believe sidelining Rohit during a slump sent the wrong message to the cricketing community.

However, India’s reshuffled batting lineup struggled against Australia’s seam attack on opening day, managing just 185 runs in their first innings.

Australia ended Day 1 at 9/1, with Bumrah providing a glimmer of hope for India by dismissing Usman Khawaja for just 2 runs.

Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu lauded star India batter Virat Kohli for his match-winning knock in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 against South Africa. After managing just 75 runs in the first seven innings of the competition, Virat stepped up when it mattered the most, scoring 76 in 59 balls, with six fours and two sixes. His runs came at a strike rate of 128.81. His score guided India to 176/7 in their 20 overs, which India defended successfully, restricting SA to 169/8 in a thriller.

Speaking on Star Sports, Sidhu said about Virat, “When it mattered the most, when 1.5 billion Indians were praying for victory and hoping that we do not choke at the final hurdle, he stood like the rock of Gibraltar in the Sea of Ruins. He kept one end intact and delivered the World Cup crown by performing when India’s ship was stuck.”

Sidhu noted that during the tournament, Virat did not let the run-rate drop even once and would be remembered as an “icon and the greatest inspiration” following his T20I retirement.

“In this tournament, even when he scored 38 and 24, he didn’t let the run rate drop. There was a different kind of Virat. Virat Kohli, a man of adversity, a man of masses, a master performer, a genius. For me, he will always be remembered as an icon, as the greatest inspiration, and above all, a cup of joy for billions and billions who watch cricket all over,” he said.

Virat ended the 2024 edition of the tournament with 151 runs in eight innings at an average of 18.87 and a strike rate of 112.68, with one fifty.

In 35 T20 World Cup matches, Virat has scored 1,292 runs at an average of 58.72 and a strike rate of 128.81, with 15 half-centuries. His best score is 89*. He is the highest run-scorer in the history of the T20 World Cup.

In 125 T20I matches, Virat scored 4,188 runs at an average of 48.69 and a strike rate of 137.04. He scored a century and 38 fifties and a best score of 122*. He ends the format as the second-highest run-getter of all time.

Coming to the match, India won the toss and opted to bat first. After being reduced to 34/3, a counter-attacking partnership between Virat (76) and Axar Patel (47 in 31 balls, with one four and four sixes) of 72 runs restored India’s position in the game. A 57-run stand between Virat and Shivam Dube (27 in 16 balls, with three fours and a six) took India to 176/7 in their 20 overs.

Keshav Maharaj (2/23) and Anrich Nortje (2/26) were the top bowlers for SA. Marco Jansen and Aiden Markram took a wicket each.

In the run chase of 177 runs, Proteas was reduced to 12/2, but a 58-run partnership between Quinton de Kock (39 in 31 balls, with four boundaries and a six) and Tristan Stubbs (31 in 21 balls, with three fours and a six) brought back SA into the game. A half-century by Heinrich Klaasen (52 in 27 balls, with two fours and five sixes) threatened to take the game away from India. However, Arshdeep Singh (2/18), Jasprit Bumrah (2/20) and Hardik Pandya (3/20) made a fine comeback in the death overs, keeping SA to 169/8 in their 20 overs.

Virat secured the ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance. Now, by securing their first ICC title since the Champions Trophy in 2013, India has ended their ICC trophy drought.

Former India batter Navjot Singh Sidhu poked fun at star pacer Arshdeep Singh ahead of the T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Barbados. Arshdeep is India’s leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 15 scalps to his name, and will have a chance to claim the top spot on Saturday when take on the Proteas in the T20 World Cup summit clash. Arshdeep needs two wickets to go past Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi (16) in the list of the tournament’s leading wicket-takers. However, ahead of the final, Sidhu trolled Arshdeep over his batting skills.

In a video posted on Instagram, Arshdeep can be seen shuffling across the stumps, trying to aim for a big shot. He left his stumps unguarded in order to oversmart the bowler, but ended up missing his pull. The video of the same was from the match against Pakistan in the group stage of the ongoing tournament.

Sidhu shared a video on Instagram, which read: “Confidence 100 per cent, skills 0 per cent”.

Since Sidhu has been praising has been praising Arshdeep for his exploits with the ball throughout the tournament, there wasn’t any malice intended at the player in the post shared by him.

Arshdeep, who went wicketless in the semi-final against England, will look to return to wicket-taking ways in the all-important final.

Arshdeep attributed much of his success to pace spearhead Bumrah.

“I guess a lot of credit goes to Jassi bhai (Jasprit Bumrah) because he puts a lot of pressure on the batters – he gives, what, three or four runs in an over – so batters are coming hard against me, and I just have to try and bowl my best ball and there are a lot of chances of getting wickets there,” Arshdeep said.

“On the other end they see the runs are not coming and the asking rate is going high, so they take more risks against me. [There’s a] chance always of getting a wicket there. So a lot of credit for my wickets goes to Jassi bhai,” he added.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) bagged six wins on the trot to reach Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs but were undone by Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Eliminator on Wednesday. The elimination meant that it was the same old story for the Bengaluru franchise, that has failed to bag an IPL title for 17 seasons in a row. Seeing RCB bow out of the competition, former India cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu analysed the team’s campaign in his own ‘poetic’ style, with some special words for Virat Kohli too.

Kohli ended the campaign with over 700 runs to his name, while also holding the Orange Cap which will most likely remain on his head by the time the tournament concludes. Sidhu, in a video shared by Star Sports, admitted that it was the battle of survival between RCB and RR, where Sanju Samson‘s team emerged victorious.

“Aar paar ki ladai thi, jeevan Maran ki ladai thi, swabhimaan ki ladai thi aur astitva ki ladai thi. Yahan doosra mauka nahi milega. Aapne kitne saare mauke gawaye hain aur uski wajah se Rajasthan Royals are deserved winner. Aur Kohli ka dil bada hai dost! Iss babbar sher ke andar dil ek boht bada hai. Dariya ke jaisa behta hai. Mubarakbaad dete hue. Deserved winners kehte hue. Prayas poora kiya lekin kuch cheezen aapke bas ke bahar hain (It was a battle for survival, a battle for self-respect, a battle for existence where no second chance was available. You wasted all opportunities, and hence, Rajasthan Royals were deserved winners. But, Virat Kohli’s heart is huge. He congratulated the opponents, lauded them for their deserved win. He tried everything he could but some things are outside your control),” he said in the video.

To conclude, Sidhu had no qualms in admitting that RCB ‘choked’ yet again, as their trophy-less continues in IPL.

“What cannot be cured has got to be endured. RCB raafta raafta chalte gaye aur ant me aa ke, they choked (RCB progressed step by step and choked in the end),” Sidhu had further said.

The IPL 2024 match between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals on Tuesday saw a massive controversy over Shai Hope‘s catch to dismiss Sanju Samson. Samson, who was batting on 86, looked in fine form as he slammed DC pacer Mukesh Kumar straight down the ground. However, Hope was positioned at long-on and although he completed the catch, it looked like he was too close to the boundary ropes. The third umpire ruled in DC’s favour prompting disbelief from the RR camp and Sanju ended up having a heated discussion with the umpires. Former India batter Navjot Singh Sidhu claimed that the fielder touched the boundary rope twice during the catch and even came up with a ‘fly in the milk’ analogy to explain the complete situation.

“The decision that changed the game was Sanju Samson’s dismissal. There could be differences of opinion, but if you look at the side-on angle, it touches the boundary twice. It was pretty clear. Either you don’t use technology, or if you’re using it and the technology is making a mistake, it’s like there’s a fly in milk, and someone asks you to drink it,” Sidhu said on Star Sports.

“It touched the boundary line twice. And after this, if someone says that it’s out… see, I’m a neutral person, so I’ve seen it, it’s not out. That’s why I also kept saying it about Kohli (on his dismissal against KKR, which triggered controversy over potential no-ball). Whatever may be the rule, you can see it from the naked eye; some evidence is very strong not to believe. It’s like finding a trout in a glass of milk. Umpire didn’t do it on purpose, no one is at fault. It’s part of the game. That changed the game,” he added.

Samson’s wicket proved crucial as DC kept their IPL 2024 playoff dreams alive with a crucial win over RR.

Virat Kohli’s strike-rate has been a big subject of debate among fans and experts© AFP

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stalwart Virat Kohli minced no words as he blasted those criticising his strike-rate and inability to get going against spinners in the middle overs. Kohli moved into offense with the mic in his hand after the Bengaluru side defeated Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash on Sunday. With Kohli himself scoring 44-ball 70, he ripped into those making ‘expert comments’ while sitting in the commentary box. After the match, Kohli found the backing of former India all-rounder Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Sidhu, who has been working as a pundit on Star Sports for the IPL 2024, slammed those targeting Virat over his strike-rate. The former cricketer-tuned-commentator highlighted the technical aspects of Kohli’s game, coupled with his exceptional career, that make him the player he is today.

“People think Kohli is God. He is a human, so will play like a human too. Rather than nitpick, why don’t we look at the fact that the guy has 80 centuries. That’s his strength and weakness, he has none. And if you look carefully, today he played off the backfoot and lofted the spinners. Tell me how many can do that? Hitting a left-arm spinner against the spin… how many can do that? So Kohli has a presence, he cherishes his wicket too. What else is he supposed to do?” Sidhu said.

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif, who has been defending Kohli against strike-rate critics for a long time, once spoke against the strike-rate chatter.

“All I hear about these days is strike-rate. People are after Kohli. Boss, between overs 7 and 15, it’s obvious to slow down. The economy-rate of a spinner is lower than a fast bowler. Why? Because they bowl the middle overs,” Kaif said.

With win against Gujarat, Bengaluru have kept their playoffs hopes alive. But, for the team to qualify for the next stage, there still remains a long journey to cover.

The competition for the wicket-keeper’s spot in the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2024 arguably is the most fierce among all positions. The likes of Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Sanju Samson have emerged as the top contenders for the spot behind the stumps, with there being no outright favourite. Experts and fans continue to differ in their opinions on the matter while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee also seems yet to finalise their No. 1 choice. As far as former India all-rounder Navjot Singh Sidhu is concerned, however, it’s Samson who is his numero uno pick.

Sidhu, who is working as a pundit on Star Sports for the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), hailed Samson’s rise, calling him a ‘different’ player than he was maybe one or two years ago.

“No. 1 is Sanju Samson, on form. This is a different Samson. If India finds themselves in situations where they need a spare opener or No. 4 batter or at No. 6, they you have KL Rahul, who is also in form. But I will still prefer Samson, followed by Rishabh Pant. He is coming out of an injury. Now, do you consider him as a white-ball specialist? His form is a bit patchy and scratchy, but he has survived the test so far. My preferences are these three,” Sidhu opined.

Samson was brilliant with the bat for Rajasthan Royals against Lucknow Super Giants, scoring 33-ball 71, earning the player of the match award. After the game, Samson credited his role behind the stumps as wicket-keeper as a contributing factor behind his knock.

“I am very lucky to be behind the wickets. There was some purchase with the new ball and then was a good wicket to bat on. The guys who came in and bowl one over in the power-play do an important job. There has been a lot of planning behind the scenes. The start and the end of the innings was good. We gave away a few in the middle overs. Form is temporary in this format.

“We have seen Jurel in Tests. We believe in him. He has been batting one hour and two hours at times in the nets. We have been doing really well. We have been a little lucky as well. We need to keep the process right. At the team meetings, we talk about ticking the processes. One game at a time for us,” he said.

In less than one week’s time, India’s T20 World Cup squad will be out. For a team, that last won an ICC trophy back in 2013, the 2024 T20 World Cup is a great opportunity for Rohit Sharma and Co. to end a long drought. Several experts have been giving their opinion on what the ideal 15-member India squad should look like. There is also 100 per cent consensus about two players who should be in the playing XI – Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah.

Former Indian cricket team star spinner Harbhajan Singh had an interesting suggestion regarding Virat Kohli’s batting order, depending on situation.

“I believe Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma should open for India, and Virat Kohli should come at no.3,” Harbhajan Singh told Star Sports.

“I would like to see a left-right combination at the top. If 6-7 overs are played, and if we have a player like Shivam Dube, he can walk in at no.3. Kohli can then walk in at 4. We have to take the horses-for-courses approach here, and there’s no disrespect in that. Kohli is a great player, whether he plays at no.3 or 4, the team comes first. Even if you ask him this question, he will say the team comes first.”

Another former India star Navjot Singh Sidhu advised Indian cricket team coach Rahul Dravid and the BCCI selectors to pick three spinners and as many quality fast bowlers.

“My straight advice to Rahul Dravid is that if you want to win this tournament, have five wicket-taking specialist bowlers, simple. The collapse of a team’s character stems from the compromise point. You have three spinner in Bishnoi, Kuldeep and Jadeja, who picks himself. Mayank Yadav if he is fit, walks into this side. Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Mohsin Khan should be the fast bowlers. ” Sidhu said on Star Sports.

“India have a lot of options and they shouldn’t compromise and pick guys who can bat and bowl a bit. You think of all the World Cup winning captains, they would’ve gone for quality bowling options. That’s the secret. If seven batters can’t win you the World Cup, even the 8th cannot do anything.”
