The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 campaign produced some fiery clashes on the field, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru superstar Virat Kohli taking on Lucknow Super Giants’ Naveen-ul-Haq. The clash between the two spiralled on beyond the match, with LSG coach Gautam Gambhir also throwing himself in the altercation. Gambhir and Kohli had a heated argument that prompted forced their teammates to intervene. Now, Lucknow spinner Amit Mishra has revealed what exactly was the reason behind such an explosive clash that season.

In a chat during a podcast on YouTube, LSG’s veteran spinner Amit Mishra revealed that the story started a few matches before in Bengaluru when Lucknow mentor Gautam Gambhir had done the ‘finger on mouth’ gesture towards Bengaluru fans.

“It all started in Bengaluru where we (LSG) won the game and Gambhir expressed his aggression. The public was going mad so Gautam gestured them to keep quiet. Probably Virat Kohli didn’t like that. We thought the matter ended with the game but not for Kohli,” Mishra said.

Kohli, according to Mishra, was probably not happy with Gambhir’s gesture and started to abuse LSG players when the two teams met again. Mishra said that Virat could’ve avoided certain things but he chose not to.

“He started abusing our players (in the LSG vs RCB rematch in Lucknow). He didn’t have any grudges with Kyle Myers but he abused him as well. Naveen-ul-Haq was bowling, he would abuse him too. Bohot cheezein avoid ho sakti thi but Virat Kohli ne nahi ki (a lot of things would have been avoided but Kohli chose not to).

Kohli even had an altercation with Mishra when he was batting with Naven in the middle. As Mishra tried to calm things down, Virat told him to explain the same to Naveen, not him.

“When I was batting with Naveen, I asked Kohli, ‘Who are you even talking to He’s just a youngster and not even close to your stature. Whatever happened has happened.’ He answered back, saying, “You make him understand that, not me.”

As per Mishra, Virat didn’t calm down even after the match concluded and continued to abuse Naveen, this is when Gambhir decided to intervene.

“But the problem began after the game. He (Kohli) started abusing him again during the customary handshakes. That’s when Gambhir intervened, questing why are you starting it again when the game has ended and you guys have won. I moved Gambhir away but Naveen later came to the dressing and said that Kohli started abusing again,” he added.

While Kohli and Naveen seemed to have buried to hatchet, having played against each other on multiple occasions since the incident, Mishra doesn’t thing the Afghanistan pacer will ever respect the Team India batter again.

“For social media, it all seemed to be over between them. But do you think Naveen will respect Kohli ever again? What about the youngsters who saw the incident where a big star was abusing others,” Mishra wondered.

Australia Test stalwart Usman Khawaja expressed his sadness at Afghanistan not being able to play in Australia, as he congratulated Afghanistan’s historic 2024 T20 World Cup win over his own country. Earlier in the year, Cricket Australia had cancelled a bilateral series against Afghanistan over the country’s “marked deterioration” in the treatment of women and children, following the rise of the Taliban regime. While the Afghanistan cricketers remain puzzled over the decision, Khawaja stated that the Afghanistan side was an inspiration.

Replying to a tweet by Rashid Khan celebrating Afghanistan’s 21-run win over Australia, Khawaja said:

“Well done Brother. Better team on the day. You boys are an inspiration for so many back home and abroad. So sad we can’t see you all play in Australia.”

In 2023 and 2024, Cricket Australia had cancelled a planned bilateral series against Afghanistan. The decisions came following restrictions imposed by the ruling Taliban, which did not allow women and girls to access higher education and public property like parks and gyms.

Needing a win to stay alive in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Afghanistan posted a total of 148 in 20 overs. However, the Aussie opening pair of Travis Head and David Warner failed to fire.

It looked that much like the 2023 World Cup clash between the two nations, Glenn Maxwell would take the game away from Afghanistan. However, he was dismissed in the 15th over, with Australia lying at 106-6.

Gulbadin Naib was the unlikely hero with the ball, picking up four wickets: Maxwell, the in-form Marcus Stoinis, Tim David and Pat Cummins.

Afghanistan bundled out Australia for 127, registering their first win over the Aussies in T20 World Cup history.

If Afghanistan beat Bangladesh in their final Super 8 clash, and Australia lose to India, then Afghanistan will take a spot in the 2024 T20 World Cup semis.

No longer the ‘minnows’, Afghanistan pulled off an upset of epic proportions as they shocked Australia by 21 runs in the T20 World Cup 2024. Thanks to Gulbadin Naib’s four-wicket haul, Afghanistan nullified Australia skipper Pat Cummins’ hat-trick, producing one of most memorable days in Afghan cricket. As fans and cricket experts took to social media to share reactions on the big upset in T20 World Cup, Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq shared a cryptic post, targeting the critics of his team, as well as the lack of support.

Naveen took to social media to lambast the lack of support his team got during tough times, in comparison to the greetings it is getting now.

Afghanistan defended their total of 148 for six for their first-ever win over Australia in international cricket. Australia were all out for 127 in 19.2 overs and they are now staring at early elimination from the World Cup. Australia now must win their match against India on Monday and also hope that Afghanistan lose to Bangladesh in their next match.

Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (60) and Ibrahim Zadran (51) forged a 118-run partnership setting up base for a challenging total but Pat Cummins registered his second successive hat-trick spread across two overs to restrict Afghanistan to a manageable total.

“Massive win for us as a team and as a nation. Great feeling. It’s something we missed in last two years. Really happy with the win and super proud of the guys. Quite important for us that we went back with the same playing XI. We’re reading the opposition bowling lineup and selecting XI accordingly. 140 was a good total on this wicket. We didn’t finish as well as we should have. Opening partnership gave us best start. On this wicket, anything 130-plus, we were capable of defending it as long as we kept calm and had the belief.

“That’s the beauty of this team, having allrounders and having options. The way Gulbadin bowled today – the experience he has, it came good today. The way Nabi started – the wicket of Warner – was also pleasing to see. It’s so important for us back home and around the world. I’m sure they’re proud and would’ve enjoyed the game,” Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan said after the game.

Thanks to the win, Afghanistan remain alive in the T20 World Cup 2024, giving their T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final hopes a big boost.

Packed streets of Afghanistan after T20 World Cup Super 8 win vs Australia.© X (Twitter)

For a nation facing many problems, cricket has often been a uniting factor for people in Afghanistan. And the nation’s historic victory over Australia in the Super 8 stage of 2024 T20 World Cup has created a fanatic frenzy back home. The win – which avenges the defeat from the 2023 ODI World Cup – has put Afghanistan in a great position to qualify for the semi-finals. And the joy among the players was multiplied back home, as several videos went viral, showing streets in Afghanistan packed with thousands of people celebrating the historic win.

Multiple videos showed that transport had come to a standstill. For as far as the eye went, people were on the streets. Loud fireworks went off into the sky almost every second, as people celebrated Afghanistan’s first-ever win over Australia in T20 World Cups.

In another video that was by from Khost province of Afghanistan, people were celebrating the win over Australia with great enthusiasm.

The game has put Afghanistan right in the mix to qualify for their first-ever T20 World Cup semis. With Australia facing an in-form India and Afghanistan facing a downbeat Bangladesh, the race to the semis is now wide open.

The game was also sweet revenge for Afghanistan. Back in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Afghanistan had lost from a winning position. In that game, Australia won after being 90-7, as Glenn Maxwell scored a double century in one of the greatest ODI knocks of all time.

This time around, Maxwell made another half-century [59 (41)], but Afghanistan held on. Gulbadin Naib was the unlikely star with the ball, running through the Australia middle order. Outspoken pacer Naveen-ul-Haq also got three wickets.

As the Afghanistan team bus jammed to bowling coach Dwayne Bravo‘s song “Champion” after the win, the streets of Afghanistan went berserk in elation. A cricket fairytale is being written in the West Indies.

It has not been a good campaign for Virat Kohli in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 but he recreated his famous six to leave fans thrilled during the Super 8 match against Afghanistan on Thursday. During the fifth over of the Indian innings, Kohli capitalised on a short and wide delivery from Naveen-ul-Haq and slammed the ball straight down the group for a massive six. The video of the shot quickly went viral on social media with fans comparing it to his famous six off Haris Rauf during the famous win over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2022. On that occasion, he similarly slammed Rauf for a mammoth six straight down the ground before guiding his team to a victory with an unbeaten knock of 82 off 53 deliveries.

Virat was ultimately dismissed by Rashid Khan after scoring 24 off 24 balls.

Earlier, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat.

Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav replaced fast-bowler Mohammed Siraj in the Indian cricket team playing XI. India have met Afghanistan eight times in T20Is and have never lost to them in the format.

“Looks alright at this moment, looks like a good track. No grass on the pitch, I guess it will get slower. It’s better than New York. We have to adapt to the conditions quickly. We have been here for a couple of days, we have played a lot of cricket. It’s about understanding what we need to do in conditions like these. It’s an early start. Usually starts in the evening elsewhere. We enjoy playing here,” Rohit said.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan said batter Hazratullah Zazai comes into the playing eleven in place of Karim Janat. Zazai came into the squad as a replacement for injured spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

“We would have liked to bat first. It’s more about how you play the game in T20s. Happy with our preparations and how things have gone. We are facing good teams, need to control our emotions, and play our natural game. It does help to get used to the conditions. We have to play good cricket,” he said.

Playing XIs:

India: Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah.

Afghanistan: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Najibullah Zadran, Hazratullah Zazai, Gulbadin Naib, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan (c), Noor Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi.

England achieved the unwanted record of losing to all 11 Test-playing nations at the Cricket World Cup after they were stunned by Afghanistan on Sunday. England are the first team ever to achieve this feat as they were completely outplayed by Afghanistan in the Cricket World Cup 2023 encounter in New Delhi. In the first two editions of the tournament, England lost to Australia in 1975 and then to West Indies in the 1979 final. In 1983 and 1987, they suffered losses at the hands of India and Pakistan respectively. In 1983, they were also defeated by New Zealand in a shock result.

In 1992, they faced their first loss against Zimbabwe and in 1996, they were defeated by eventual champions Si Lanka as well as South Africa. Bangladesh defeated England in a much upset in 2011 and in the same tournament, Ireland pulled off one of the best chases in World Cup history.

With the Afghanistan loss, the defending champions have now lost against all Test-playing nations.

Afghanistan caused one of the biggest upsets in the history of Cricket World Cup as they outclassed defending champions England by 69 runs in New Delhi on Sunday.

The Afghans’ epic triumph against the overwhelming favourites, one of the game’s traditional heavyweights, was a reflection of the spirit and courage of the battle-hardened tribe from the country ravaged by years of war and internal conflicts.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz gave early impetus while Ikram Alikhil provided the final flourish to guide Afghanistan to a competitive 284 all out after being put into bat.

The Afghan bowlers then thrived under lights, dishing out a collective effort to bundle out England for 215 runs in 40.3 overs and register just their second World Cup win, eight years since their last against Scotland in Australia.

While this was Afghanistan’s first win in the ongoing tournament after two losses, England slumped to their second defeat from three games.

Rashid Khan (3/37) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (3/51) were the pick of the Afghan bowlers.

Harry Brook (66 off 61) was the only shining light in what was a dismal batting display from England.

It has been an interesting journey for Afghanistan fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq when it comes to fan support in India during the Cricket World Cup 2023. The pacer was taunted constantly during the initial games of the competition as a result of the on-field spat he had with Virat Kohli during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Chants of “Kohli Kohli” filled the stadium every time he came to bowl and even on social media, his every move was scrutinised. However, the two cricketers put an end to their spat as they hugged each other during the India vs Afghanistan game and the mood among the Indian cricket team fans has made a complete U-turn. During the match against England in New Delhi on Sunday, the crowd was firmly behind Afghanistan and Naveen received loud cheers from them throughout the game.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, the crowd can be seen cheering massively as Naveen dismissed England’s Jos Buttler en route to a famous victory against the defending champions.

Afghanistan pulled off one of the greatest Cricket World Cup shocks on Sunday when they defeated defending champions England by 69 runs in New Delhi.

Chasing 285 to win, after opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz had hit a blistering 80, England were bowled out for 215 despite Harry Brook‘s 66 with spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan claiming three wickets each.

“It’s a very proud moment to be here in the World Cup beating the last champions, it is a good moment for the whole nation and the team. A wonderful performance for the bowlers and the batters,” said Mujeeb.

The stunning upset gave Afghanistan just their second World Cup win to add to a lone victory over Scotland at the 2015 tournament.

They came into Sunday’s clash having lost their opening two games in India and on a 14-match losing World Cup streak.

Star India pacer Virat Kohli and Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq put their recent differences behind them with a warm embrace during their World Cup 2023 match in Delhi on Wednesday. Earlier this year, Kohli and Naveen were involved in a war of words during an IPL 2023 match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants. Following the aftermath of that incident, Naveen was often targetted by fans with pro-Kohli chants wherever he has played in India.

While many had expected another face-off between the two players, Kohli and Naveen made sure that there were no more controversy for the viewers.

Naveen ran up to Kohli for a hand shake in the middle of India’s successful chase at New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, before the two shared a hug and smile.

Notably, this came after Kohli urged the crowd not to target Naveen by chanting his name. Naveen acknowledged the same and went on to shake hands with him.

After the match, Kohli and Naveen were seen having a chat.

For the record, this isn’t the first time that Kohli has asked the crowd not to target a player.

During the 2019 World Cup in England, Kohli’s sportsmanship was also on display after he asked the fans not to mock Australia star Steve Smith.

For instance, Smith was banned from cricket for a year over his involvement in a ball tampering scandal.

Smith was playing his first tournament since the incident, and was greeted by the fans with loud jeers and boos.

The India vs Afghanistan match was perfect for the Rohit Sharma-led team in many sense. The India skipper scored his seventh World Cup ton while Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets. It has set the Indian cricket team nicely for the mega clash against Pakistan on Saturday in Ahmedabad. However, one incident stood out during the course of the match, the image of which has gone viral on social media. Virat Kohli and Naveen ul Haq hugged out each other in a clear signal that all is well between them.

In the IPL 2023, during a match between Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore and Naveen Ul Haq’s Lucknow Super Giants, the two players were involved in an ugly spat.    But now things are normal. Th two again came face to face at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, where there is a stand named after Virat Kohli.

“An interesting development took place when Rohit Sharma was dismissed and Shreyas Iyer was coming out. This is what happened. Naveen-ul-Haq, and Virat Kohli shaking hands with each other. And this is good. The crowd loved it. You might have your things to say in the heat of the moment, but this is absolutely great to see,” Ravi Shastri, who was commentating during the match, said on Star Sports.

He followed that up with a witty remark. “Whatever happens, Naveen has to go back to the Virat Kohli pavilion,” he said.

On Wednesday, chants of ‘Kohli Kohli’ welcomed Naveen when he came into the bowl. During India’s chase of 273, the two players were seen enjoying a lighter movement. For Naveen, the matter never went beyond the boundary ropes.

“Crowd will chant for their home cricketers and that is what they did. It is his (Kohli’s) home ground. He is a nice guy, a good player and we shook hands.

“It (what happened) was always in the ground, it was nothing outside the ground. People make it big. They need that stuff for their followers. He said (today) ‘we are done with that and I said yes we are done with that. We shook hands and hugged,” Naveen said.

The 24-year-old has only played nine ODIs and he plans to retire from the format following the World Cup.

Talking about his retirement plans, Naveen said: “To be honest more international bowlers will opt out of ODI cricket because there is not much balance between bat and ball. I wish I would have played more ODI cricket but it is what it is.”
