The Pakistan vs New Zealand Champions Trophy 2025 clash officially ended Pakistan’s 29-year-long wait to host an ICC event. It was Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan who won the toss and opted to bowl first at Karachi’s National Stadium on Wednesday. As the two teams returned from their respective dressing rooms to kick off their maiden battle in the tournament, the Pakistan Air Force produced an air show, marking the start of the prestigious ICC Champions Trophy.

New Zealand opening duo of Will Young and Devon Conway prepared to take charge in the middle as planes flew over their heads. Some players even seemed to have gotten scared as the air show began.

The PAF air show was scheduled by the Pakistan Cricket Board as part of the opening ceremony, which was conducted over multiple days in different venues.

Pakistan brought in Haris Rauf for this match after the express pacer recovered from injury in time for the opening match. On the other hand, the Kiwis included Matt Henry in their line-up. Both teams are placed in Group A along with India and Bangladesh

“We will bowl first. Seen the last couple of matches dew comes in later, so want to maximise on that. We are the defending champions so will be in a bit more pressure, but we will treat it like the previous tri-series. Playing in Pakistan will be great as well. Haris Rauf is fit again, so he’s back in,” Rizwan said after winning the toss.

New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner said that the dew will come into play later which does make their task difficult.

“The dew gets on later, but we have a job to do with the bat. Looks like a good wicket. We have a good mix of experience and new faces, and are playing some good cricket as well. We have been lucky to play these guys home and away, so we know each other well. What’s most important is getting used to the conditions here in Karachi. The injuries we’ve had are unfortunate, but are confident with the boys that we have out here. Matt Henry comes back in for us,” Santner said.

Ahead of the start of the ICC Champions Trophy, a fresh controversy was triggered after a video showing the Indian flag being absent from the National Stadium, as per fans on social media, in Karachi surfaced on social media. While the flags of other nations participating in the Champions Trophy were seen at the venue, the Indian flag was missing. The visual left quite a few fans stunned on social media, triggering a debate. While the exact reason behind the Indian flag’s absence isn’t known, it might have something to do with the fact that the Indian team is playing all of its Champions Trophy matches in Dubai.

The Karachi Stadium is scheduled to host matches for New Zealand, South Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and England teams. Just a few days before the start of the event, a video emerged from the venue where flags of the participating nations could be seen, leaving fans wondering why such an act by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was executed.

The Indian team refused to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy and it was this stance that forced the Pakistan Cricket Board and the International Cricket Council to convert the tournament into a hybrid mode.

As part of the settlement, India will play all of their matches in Dubai, including the semi-final and final, if the team qualifies. As part of a compromise that was reached, involving BCCI, PCB and ICC, even the Pakistan cricket team would not play its matches in the ICC events that India will be hosting in the coming years.

The Pakistan Cricket Board, on Tuesday, inaugurated the renovated National Stadium, one of the three venues in the country that will host the Champions Trophy, taking the opportunity to reward the 700 workers who toiled day and night to complete the project. In a video that has gone viral on social media, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi decided to throw a feast for the workers. In the video, the workers could be seen enjoying food provided by the Pakistan board. Naqvi himself also decided to dine with the workers to celebrate the moment.

The stadium will host the inaugural Champions Trophy match between New Zealand and Pakistan on February 19.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi acknowledged the efforts of the workers, including labourers, technicians, engineers and loaders, saying without their persistence it would not have been possible to complete the upgradation on time.

The stadium will also host the South Africa versus Pakistan tri-series match on Wednesday and the final on February 14.

The stadium, which was under renovation for the last four months, has a brand new state-of-the-art building at the far end of the historical venue. Besides, new LED lights, two screens and better facilities for spectators have also been put in place.

The new building houses dressing rooms, dedicated areas for broadcasters and match officials and hospitality boxes.

The stadium, however, retains its old look and the placement of the bigger screen on the ground will block the view of the people sitting in the enclosure.

The project manager, Mohsin Chohan conceded that the new screen will have to be moved to another spot after the tournament.

The PCB had initially budgeted Pakistan Rupees four billion on the renovation of the National Stadium but they appear to have overrun the cost with some work still remaining to be done after the Champions Trophy.

The state of cricket stadiums in Pakistan has sent shockwaves across the global cricketing spectrum, with the slow renovation progress leaving all the stakeholders worried. While India are supposed to play their Champions Trophy fixtures in Dubai, all the other international teams are supposed to set their base in Pakistan. The latest images from the renovation work at the stadium don’t paint a particularly rosy picture. Reports from Pakistan have now claimed that it is ‘impossible’ for authorities to complete the construction work at the stadiums within the deadline.

The Pakistan Cricket Board had promised to complete the renovation work at the stadiums by January 31 but it doesn’t look like that is possible now. Pakistan are also scheduled to play a tri-nation ODI series against New Zealand and South Africa at home, starting February 08. But, the progress of work at the venues has had those involved highly worried.

“it seems absolutely impossible to contemplate the renovation work being completed within the deadline, but the personnel handed the responsibility are beaming with confidence,” a report in Pakistan media outlet Dawn read.

After the worrying pictures and videos that have emerged on social media, the PCB’s promise of ‘world class experience’ has been exposed. Even getting basic facilities ready in time seems like a challenge at present.

“Look, the stadiums will be in a shape to host matches but the question is the PCB has promised everyone a world-class experience at these renovated venues for the Tri-series and Champions Trophy and whether they can deliver on that promise remains to be seen,” news agency PTI quoted a source as saying.

“Everything is under control and the stadium will be ready by the 31st,” the PCB’s director for the project at the National Stadium in Karachi, Bilal Chauhan, told the media outlet.

“When the chairman shared with us his ambition, our first reaction was that it was impossible to complete the task in the given time,” said Bilal. “But how he gave us full backing inspired belief that we could do it.”

Amidst fears that the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 may not be properly hosted by host nation Pakistan due to the existing state of underdeveloped stadiums, Pakistan-based journalist Farid Khan has shared a video showing the work in progress at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Earlier, a report had emerged stating that stadiums in all three cities – Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi – are still under construction, with just over a month till the Champions Trophy gets underway. However, the visual shared by the journalist shows the extent in which work is being done at the Gaddafi Stadium.

The visuals paint a picture that the stadiums are indeed being constructed, almost from scratch. Bricks, ladders, cement and construction tools and vehicles can all be spotted in the video.

As per the social media post by the journalist, more than 250 workers are on-site in order to complete the stadium construction before the given deadline of January 25.

Watch: Construction is underway at Pakistan’s Gaddafi Stadium

Following a report by The Times of India, where a source stated the underprepared nature of the Pakistani stadiums, it was said that a “miracle” would be needed from both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) to pull off the construction work in time.

The Gaddafi stadium was stated to be in particularly bad state.

“The weather is not ideal for construction and finishing work to happen at a rapid pace. At Gadaffi, even the plaster work isn’t completed yet. And most of the time is taken by finishing work because we are talking about dressing rooms etc. They just can’t be random rooms/enclosures for an ICC event. ICC has a checklist which needs to be met. National Stadium (in Karachi) has decided to not completely finish the new enclosure because there is no time,” the source had said.

Meanwhile, in light of the situation, the PCB responded by shifting the venues of Pakistan’s upcoming tri-series against South Africa and New Zealand.

While the majority of the tournament will be played in Pakistan, all of Team India’s matches, as well as the semi-final and the final, will be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, if India do not qualify for the final, the Gaddafi Stadium will host the summit clash.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is in a scramble to complete the renovation work of the National Stadium ahead of next month’s Champions Trophy, and has moved all matches scheduled at the venue to other places. The stadium will play host to the opening match of the ICC marquee event between Pakistan and New Zealand on February 19. “Due to the ongoing construction and renovation work it was decided against holding any matches at the NSK as it would only further delay the work and also disturb the players,” one official said.

The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final, the premier first-class event in Pakistan, began on Thursday at the smaller UBL Complex here after getting shifted from the National Stadium.

The PCB has also announced that the two-Test series against the West Indies later this month would be held in Multan after scheduling the first Test in Karachi after continuing delay in the renovation work remained a cause of concern.

Some of the construction work, which was scheduled for a December 15 finish, was completed at the deadline and fresh instructions have been issued to the construction company to push the job schedule.

The PCB is carrying out massive construction work worth Rs 12 billion at all three venues scheduled to host the Champions Trophy including Lahore and Rawalpindi.

It includes renovation of the main NSK building, new dressing rooms, media centres, hospitality boxes and board offices.

A new electronic scoreboard is also being installed along with new chairs in enclosures and the fencing around the ground is also being replaced from scratch.

The ninth season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is about to reach its conclusion with two games left to play, including the summit clash. The Mohammad Rizwan-led Multan Sultans have booked their place in Monday’s final after beating Babar Azam‘s Peshawar Zalmi in the Qualifier. However, fans have raised concerns over the subdued atmosphere in Karachi for the PSL playoffs. On Friday, Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators faced off in Eliminator 1 in front of an almost empty National Cricket Stadium.

While the tournament saw almost packed scenes during the games in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan, there has been little to no attendance throughout the Karachi leg.

In fact, the subdued atmosphere in Karchi has become even more noticeable with the onset of Ramzan. According to ESPNcricinfo, the PSL officials have decided against relocating the remaining games.

Former Paksitan captain Wasim Akram said he was “embarrassed” to see no fans in Karachi for the playoffs.

“It was embarrassing to see no crowd in Karachi. There was no crowd, literally no crowd for last night’s match,” Akram said on A Sports.

Here’s how Internet reacted:

For the unversed, this will be the first time a PSL final will be played on a Monday. All the previous eight editions saw the conclusion of the tournament on the weekend.

However, the PSL 2024 has a rest day on Sunday.

On Friday, Islamabad United defeated Quetta Gladiators in Eliminator 1. They will now take on Peshawar Zalmin in Eliminator 2 for a place in the final.

Schedule of remaining PSL matches

March 16, 2024, Eliminator 2 (Islamabad United v Peshawar Zalmi), National Bank Stadium

March 18, 2024, Final, National Bank Stadium
