A strange incident took place on the opening day of the pink-ball Test between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval earlier this month. The floodlights at the venue went off twice in the 18th over of Australia’s first innings. Later, Cricket Australia issued a statement acknowledging the disruption and said that it happened due to a “brief internal switching issue”. The detailed reason behind the disturbance has now come to the fore. It was Nathan Lyon‘s request that created the chaos.

Former cricketer and Australian media personality James Brayshaw talked to Lyon about the incident on Day 1 of India vs Australia 3rd Test.

Brayshaw said to Lyon on Seven’s coverage, as quoted by Fox Cricket: “It led back to me that the lights went off twice and you were the reason for that because you’re the nightwatchman and you wanted to go out and have a hit.

“So you said to the bloke, ‘Put the lights on in the nets so I can have a hit’, and he hit the wrong button twice and turned the whole ground lights off.”

Lyon then revealed that the incident involved him and Australian assistant coach Andre Borovec and a security guard.

“I couldn’t believe that. I was actually with our assistant coach ‘Boro’, sitting out there in the dark and the security guard asked us, and we said, ‘If you could put the lights on that’d be great, I need all the help I can get’. Then next minute it went off,” said Lyon.

“I literally said to Boro, ‘I reckon he’s hit the wrong switch’. We sat out in the dark there for about 15 minutes waiting to have a hit. I’ll take that one, getting blamed for someone not knowing how to turn the lights on,” he added.

Talking about the game, Australia registered a 10-wicket win to level the five-match series 1-1.

Muttiah Muralitharan Says No One Will Break His Test Wickets Record, Gives This Reason https://artifex.news/muttiah-muralitharan-says-no-one-will-break-his-test-wickets-record-gives-this-reason-6528361/ Tue, 10 Sep 2024 02:00:11 +0000 https://artifex.news/muttiah-muralitharan-says-no-one-will-break-his-test-wickets-record-gives-this-reason-6528361/ Read More “Muttiah Muralitharan Says No One Will Break His Test Wickets Record, Gives This Reason” »

Legendary Sri Lankan bowler Muttiah Muralitharan has expressed concern about the future of Test cricket. The off-spinner, who holds the record for the most wickets taken by any bowler in Test history with 800, admitted that he does not think his record would be broken by any bowler anytime soon. Muralitharan stated that cricketers nowadays focus on shorter formats, and therefore lack the consistency to near his record. He also expressed worry at decreasing viewership in many countries when it comes to Test cricket.

“I am definitely worried about Test cricket,” said Muralitharan, speaking to English newspaper Daily Mail.

“Every country will play maybe only six or seven Test matches. England and Australia might play the Ashes. But, in some other countries, not many people are watching. There will be very little Test cricket,” he added.

Muralitharan stated a fundamental reason behind why his record may not be surpassed for a long time.

“It’s very hard (for someone to surpass 800 Test wickets), because emphasis has shifted to short-form cricket. Also, we played for 20 years. Careers are shorter now,” he said.

The closest bowlers to Muralitharan’s record are Australian spinner Nathan Lyon (530 wickets) and Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (516). However, Lyon is 36 and Ashwin is 37, and are unlikely to reach Muralitharan’s total before they retire. English fast bowler James Anderson recently retired on 704 wickets, the third-highest of all time.

Among bowlers below the age of 30, South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada has the highest Test wickets, with 299.

“Consistency is the problem. It’s not about how good they are, because they all are talented. The only thing is how can they become experienced? Nowadays, it’s difficult. There are too many tournaments and things in their heads,” Muralitharan added.

Muralitharan’s own country, Sri Lanka, are one of the Test-playing nations who’ve seen a downfall in viewership and performance, particularly after the retirement of stalwarts like himself, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.

In the just-concluded Test series between England and Sri Lanka, hosts England won 2-1. However, Sri Lanka ended the series on a high with an eight-wicket win.

‘Shoaib Bashir Should Look At Nathan Lyon’s Bowling,’ Advises Geoffrey Boycott https://artifex.news/shoaib-bashir-should-look-at-nathan-lyon-s-bowling-advises-geoffrey-boycott-6421017/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 11:58:39 +0000 https://artifex.news/shoaib-bashir-should-look-at-nathan-lyon-s-bowling-advises-geoffrey-boycott-6421017/ Read More “‘Shoaib Bashir Should Look At Nathan Lyon’s Bowling,’ Advises Geoffrey Boycott” »

Geoffrey Boycott, the former England opener, has advised young off-spinner Shoaib Bashir to learn from Nathan Lyon’s bowling videos, as he believes the Australia veteran is the most superior off-spinner in the cricketing world. In seven Tests since his debut on this year’s tour of India, Bashir has picked 29 wickets, but went wicketless in second innings of series opener against Sri Lanka at Manchester, as the batters used their feet to unsettle his lines and lengths. “Shoaib Bashir has talent and can get better. He is tall with a fluid high action that will create occasional bounce on hard pitches together with a natural loop. My impression is he is not clear on what line he should be bowling so he tries all sorts of deliveries searching for a wicket.

“At the moment the best off-spinner in world cricket by a long way is Nathan Lyon, with 530 wickets at 30 runs each. My advice would be go and look at film of Lyon bowling. He gets close to the stumps so he can find a touch of drift away from the batsman with his action but he aims to pitch outside off stump to spin back and hit the stumps.

“His straight-on ball brings slip in play and he has a short square leg for the bat/pad nick. That way he can beat right-handers inside and outside of the bat. All great bowlers have to match line with length. Line is good, but if too short or too full then it is hittable. Great length but wrong line, such as being too straight, gives easy runs on the leg side,” wrote Boycott in his column for The Telegraph.

He also thinks Bashir must develop a stock ball to use in Test cricket to keep the batters quiet. “I think Shoaib has to learn that he can’t always go searching for wickets, admirable as that is, because it can become expensive.

“Sometimes when two opposition batsmen get set on a flat batting pitch the seamers are given the best end and the spinner the worst end. They are asked to bowl uphill or against the wind to do a holding job, keeping the batsmen quiet and runs to a minimum. That is why he needs a good stock ball.”

England now have a 1-0 lead in the three-match series against Sri Lanka and will play the second Test at Lord’s on August 29, followed by the series-ending game at The Oval on September 6.

Australia’s experienced spinner Nathan Lyon disclosed that his biggest weapon is the bounce that he is able to extract from the surface following his heroics with the bat and ball in the first Test against New Zealand on Saturday. Lyon starred with the bat following his influential knock of 41 as a nightwatchman. Efforts from the 36-year-old with the bat propelled Australia’s score to 164 and helped them set a total of 369. He went on to showcase his skills with the ball as he bagged crucial wickets of Tom Latham (8) and Kane Williamson (9) to reduce the Kiwis to 111/3 at the end of Day 3 in Basin Reserve.

On his second ball on Day 3, Lyon got off the mark by dismissing Latham with a short and wide delivery. After the end of the day’s play, Lyon talked about his plan to deal with the opposition batters.

“My biggest weapon and it’s no secret is my bounce all around the world. So I’ll continue to try and put some over spin on the ball and try and get the bounce and try and hit the stickers on the bat and challenge the guys’ defence on the crease. I’ve got a fair understanding of what their plan is going to be. So it’s a good opportunity for me tonight to reset some goals and reset some plans and we’ll go from there,” Lyon said.

Apart from his remarkable craftsmanship with the ball, earlier in the day, Lyon showed his resilience with the bat with his knock of 41 off 46 deliveries which was laced with six boundaries.

While his knock drove Australia’s scoreboard the rest of the batters failed to leave their mark in the second innings. Glenn Phillips removed Australia’s five out of the first seven batters. Lyon admitted that the batters would be frustrated with the way they lost their wickets.

“I dare say so. But I’ll never criticise our batters the way they go about it because they’ve been exceptional for a number of years now. But then you’ve got to give credit to the bowlers and this is my big thing. Bowlers are actually there to bowl good balls. And it’s not always the batters’ fault getting out and bowlers are allowed to come up with plans and execute and take wickets. No doubt there will be some frustration in there,” Lyon added.
