Four-time Grand Slam champions Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka will go head-to-head in the first French Open women’s night match in three years on Monday (June 1, 2026), as a host of men’s players eye a maiden major quarterfinal.

World number one Sabalenka will likely face a stern test in her bid to win a maiden Roland Garros crown after suffering an agonising loss to Coco Gauff in last year’s final.

A resurgent Osaka has powered into the French Open last 16 for the first time in her career, looking more at home then ever before on the Parisian clay.

It will be only the fourth meeting, all at the last-16 stage of tournaments, between two of the biggest stars in the sport.

Osaka edged their first encounter en route to the 2018 US Open title and then they never met again until this year.

Sabalenka saw off her Japanese opponent in straight sets in Indian Wells, before fighting back from a set down to win at the Madrid Open.

They renew their rivalry with a quarter-final against either former Australian Open champion Madison Keys or Russia’s Diana Shnaider up for grabs.

“It’s great, great to see her back on her level. Maybe not at her best level, but she’s back, she’s fighting, she’s building her level,” said Sabalenka of Osaka, who took a break from tennis in 2023 to give birth to her daughter.

“It’s nice to see her. She’s a great player, great person. I feel like I really enjoy our battles. It’s high-level matches, and I really enjoy when somebody pushes me to the limit.”

Osaka struggled initially for form after rejoining the tour, but reached the US Open semi-finals last year, the first time she had made the second week of a Grand Slam event since winning her second Australian Open title in 2021.

“I really wanted to make it a goal to do really well on clay and grass,” said Osaka, who has never got past the third round at Wimbledon.

“I don’t want this to be my last round. I want to keep going. I just want to keep focusing on every match.”

Osaka has been wearing a sequined, gold dress in Paris, which she likened to the Eiffel Tower at night, but has said she may switch things up for the night session.

The last remaining French player Diane Parry will be hoping to emulate last year’s surprise semi-finalist Lois Boisson and continue her dream run, going up against Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska.

Austrian 28th seed Anastasia Potapova looks to back up her win over defending champion Coco Gauff when she faces Anna Kalinskaya.

Wide-open men’s draw

World number six Felix Auger-Aliassime is the highest-ranked player left in the top half of the men’s draw after the shock exit of Jannik Sinner and an early defeat for Ben Shelton.

The Canadian will bid to reach his first French Open quarter-final when he plays Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, in the last 16 of a Slam event for the first time.

World number 85 Zachary Svajda had only won two Grand Slam matches before this tournament, but even he took notice of Sinner’s loss.

“When I saw Sinner was out, I try to stay present and stay positive and just take it day by day, match by match,” said the American, who takes on Italian 10th seed Flavio Cobolli.

“I knew the draw was open, but I just tried to keep doing my routines, keep doing what I’ve been doing, and just see what happens.”

Former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini targets his first Slam quarter-final since 2022 when he goes up against Sinner’s conqueror Juan Manuel Cerundolo on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Frances Tiafoe, who lost to Lorenzo Musetti in the last eight 12 months ago, plays another Italian in Matteo Arnaldi.

Naomi Osaka continued to shine in the City of Light as she beat American teenager Iva Jovic 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (3/7), 6-4, in the French Open third round on Saturday (May 30, 2026).

On Court Suzanne Lenglen, the Japanese star once again made an eye-catching entry, wearing a gold jacket and a voluminous gold train, an outfit, bracketed by pink tennis sneakers and a black sponsor’s visor.

She shed the outer layers to play in another variation of her gold tennis dress, which shone in the blazing sun of the fading Paris heatwave.

After the match, Osaka refused to reveal if she had more outfits lined up in her hotel room.

“I think it’s a surprise every time,” she said.

The No. 16 seed continued what is already her longest Roland Garros run.

“I was a lot calmer than in my first matches,” said Osaka, who has won the Australian and US Opens twice each.

“In a slam the further I get the calmer I am. It such an honour to be here. It’s the furthest I have ever been here.”

She will next face either women’s No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka or unseeded Australian Daria Kasatkina.

In a match dominated by the serve, Osaka gained the decisive break in the 10th game of the third set. Jovic, seeded 17, opened the game with a 162kph ace, but after that, faltered when Osaka returned, finding the net twice and then hitting long on the first match point.

The players exchanged breaks early in the first set and midway through the second before both went to tiebreaks.

Osaka edged the first. Jovic, 18, raced away to win in the second.

The 28-year-old Osaka said her serve had been crucial against her young opponent.

“I am really glad it was working,” said Osaka. “Against some players you need to put your serve in and she was very aggressive on my second serve,”

Naomi Osaka advanced to the third round of the French Open for the first time in seven years on Thursday (May 28, 2026) with a 7-6 (7/1), 6-4 win over Croatia’s Donna Vekic.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka will next take on American teenager Iva Jovic as both players attempt to reach the last 16 at Roland Garros for the first time.

Osaka, seeded 16th, retrieved an early break against Vekic and then broke back again when her opponent was serving for the first set.

The Japanese star dominated a tie-break and came up with the decisive break late in the second set to put away the 72nd-ranked Vekic.

Osaka’s run to the US Open semi-finals last year is the only time she has made the second week of a major since her last Grand Slam triumph at the 2021 Australian Open.

The former world number one returned to the courts in early 2024 after a year out following the birth of her daughter.

* Osaka, who wore a sequined waistcoat blouse and black ‌mesh train over her layered ‌yellow-brown and gold match dress in the opening round, arrived for the contest with Vekic in a white floor-length flared train over her outfit.

* On ‌another blazing day in Paris, the Japanese player traded breaks freely with Vekic in the opening set on ‌Court Simonne Mathieu, before finding her best form during the tiebreak to prevail for the loss of only one point.

* Down a set, Paris Olympics silver medallist Vekic began to ‌deploy a series of drop shots to trouble Osaka early in the second set but her challenge fizzled out as she surrendered her serve in the ninth game.

* Osaka saved ‌a break point in the next game to close out the win in one hour and 50 minutes, reaching the third round for the first time since 2019.

* She will face 16th seed Iva Jovic in ‌the third round, after the American beat compatriot Emma Navarro 6-0 6-3 earlier.

Aryna Sabalenka avoids Madrid Open virus scare and Osaka upset; Coco Gauff and Rybakina lose https://artifex.news/article70914921-ece/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 06:40:00 +0000 https://artifex.news/article70914921-ece/ Read More “Aryna Sabalenka avoids Madrid Open virus scare and Osaka upset; Coco Gauff and Rybakina lose” »

Tennis players are facing an unknown opponent at the Madrid Open.

A stomach virus or food poisoning has affected Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Marin Cilic and a few others, causing some concern.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka avoided an upset by Naomi Osaka on the court on Monday and said she’s trying to avoid illness by sticking to a simple diet of chicken breast, rice and salad.

The rumor among the players was bad shrimp tacos were to blame.

Sabalenka knocked on wood and said, “So far, so good. I heard that I have to avoid those tacos (laughing). I stick to the same food, same meal that I’ve been having since the very beginning of the tournament.”

Sabalenka said she was spending as little time as possible on site at the Caja Magica tennis complex.

“I try not to stay for too long,” she said. “Extra vitamin C, I guess, extra IM8, and I’m good to go, hopefully.”

Gauff vomited on the court on her way to a victory over Sorana Cirstea on Sunday. The American didn’t show signs of illness on Monday in her 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5) loss to Linda Noskova, last year’s runner-up to Sabalenka.

“I’ve heard there is some virus going around,” six-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek said after withdrawing from her match in Madrid on Saturday. “I’ve been feeling terrible.”

Cilic couldn’t play his match against João Fonseca on Friday.

“Unfortunately, I got food poisoning,” Cilic said. “After trying to recover all night my body is unfortunately exhausted and not at the proper level to get into the battle.”

Sabalenka rebounded from a set and a break down against Osaka in their fourth round contest.

She prevailed against No. 15 Osaka 6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-2 in 2 hours, 20 minutes to reach the quarterfinals and stay on track to defend her title.

“Oh my God, that was an incredible level,” Sabalenka said. “She played incredible tennis. I feel like I just got lucky in a couple of shots in the third set, that’s why it went that fast. I’m happy she brought that fight, I had to fight through to level up my game.”

Sabalenka won her 15th straight match and advanced to her 17th consecutive quarterfinal. She hasn’t lost before that round since February 2025 in Dubai. The Belarusian said her team kept pushing her to “keep fighting, keep going.”

“I’m really happy that I didn’t give up and I was pushing until the very last point,” Sabalenka said.

Sabalenka will next face American Hailey Baptiste, who defeated Belinda Bencic 6-1, 6-7 (14), 6-3 after losing the second set in the longest tour-level regular tiebreaker since 2024, according to the WTA.

Baptiste broke the racket on her leg in frustration after the loss in a set in which she wasted six match points, including five during the tiebreaker.

The 32nd-ranked American was able to rebound and clinch the victory in 2 hours, 42 minutes.

World No. 2 Elena Rybakina lost in straight sets to lucky loser Anastasia Potapova in a Monday night match.

Rybakina said on Sunday she had no trust in the electronic line-calling system in Madrid. She complained to the chair umpire after her opponent, Zheng Qinwen, was awarded an ace in the second set. Rybakina said the mark on the court was out. The umpire refused to inspect the mark and backed the system. Rybakina eventually won in three sets on Sunday.

“Well with this thing, I won’t trust it at all,” Rybakina said. “Because there was no mark even close to what the TV showed.”

She felt it was a similar situation to what happened to men’s player Alexander Zverev last year in Madrid, where he ended up grabbing his cell phone and taking a photo of a mark of an alleged wrong call. Zverev was warned for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“You can’t not see it,” Rybakina said. “It’s kind of a stolen point. I understand it was her serve and she was serving really well, but it’s really frustrating.”

Daniel Mérida lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-2 and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina lost to defending champion Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-1 on Monday, leaving 19-year-old Rafael Jódar as the only Spaniard left in the tournament.

Jódar, one of the promising stars on tour, needed three sets to get past Fonseca, another teen sensation.

World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, Spain’s current top player, withdrew from the home tournament because of a right wrist injury.

There was an unusually long rally in the Rudd vs. Davidovich Fokina match when the Spaniard resorted to 15 straight lob shots to the back of the court.

The high returns in the 32-shot rally kept Rudd from attacking until one shot came up a little short and allowed him to power a forehand and take the point.

In the match between Francisco Cerundolo and Luciano Darderi, Cerundolo won a point after reaching over the net to get to a high return that spun back into Darderi’s side of the court. Cerundolo won the match 6-2, 6-3.

Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, in January to instead play for Japan in the United Cup. The four-time major winner had agreed in September to start her 2026 season in Auckland, where she reached the final earlier this year.

She contacted Auckland tournament director Nicolas Lamperin to say she had changed her mind and would instead begin her preparation for the Australian Open in Australia.

Former No. 1-ranked Osaka will combine with Shintaro Mochizuki in the Japan team for the January 2-11 United Cup in Perth. Japan is drawn to play Britain and Greece in group play.

The Australian Open, the first tennis Grand Slam event of the year, starts on January 18 at Melbourne Park.

A “very hot-headed” Novak Djokovic produced a vintage display to join Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev in the Australian Open last 16 on Friday, but Naomi Osaka’s bid for a third Melbourne crown is over with injury. Also on day six, women’s defending champion Aryna Sabalenka “pushed to the limit” to set up an intriguing showdown with teenage talent Mirra Andreeva. Red-hot Coco Gauff was an emphatic winner once again to underline her title credentials. Djokovic, who is chasing a record-extending 11th Melbourne title and historic 25th Grand Slam crown, is on a collision course with Alcaraz in the quarter-finals.

Both kept that tantalising prospect alive with ruthless victories.

Under new coach and old rival Andy Murray, the 37-year-old Djokovic needed four sets in both of his opening two matches.

But not this time, swatting aside Czech 26th seed Tomas Machac 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 and letting out a roar at the end.

Djokovic also pointed to his ear and then someone in the Rod Laver Arena crowd.

“I am very hot-headed right now,” said the fiery Serb, but added: “This is definitely the best match I’ve played in the tournament.”

Djokovic, who needed a medical break in the second set and used an inhaler, faces 24th seed Jiri Lehecka next.

Spain’s Alcaraz, who raced into the last 32 for the loss of just 12 games, suffered a wobble in the third set against Portugal’s unseeded Nuno Borges.

But the third seed, who has won four majors but never been beyond the quarter-finals in Melbourne, regained his focus to ease through 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-2.

The 21-year-old knows how he plans to celebrate if he wins the tournament for the first time.

Alcaraz, who is sporting a new buzz cut in Melbourne, vowed to get a kangaroo tattoo if he goes all the way.

“It’s a kangaroo, that’s for sure. That’s my idea,” he said.

Germany’s second seed Zverev also booked his place in the second week with a methodical 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Britain’s Jacob Fearnley.

Zverev has not dropped a set in three matches so far and faces French 14th seed Ugo Humbert.

Jakub Mensik, the Czech teenager who shocked sixth seed Casper Ruud in round two, crashed out in five sets to Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Men’s defending champion and world number one Jannik Sinner plays Marcos Giron of the United States in the third round on Saturday.

‘It sucks’

Top-ranked Sabalenka was made to work hard behind a faltering serve before beating Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the third round on Rod Laver Arena.

Sabalenka was broken four straight times at the start of the match but found her groove to win 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 after more than two hours of attritional tennis.

“I’m just super happy that I was able to just stay in the game and I was able to push myself, honestly, to the limit to get this win,” said Sabalenka, who is chasing a third Melbourne title in a row.

Her win puts her into a clash against highly rated 17-year-old Andreeva, the 14th seed, who beat Poland’s 23rd seed Magdalena Frech in three sets.

Andreeva beat Sabalenka in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last year.

Two-time Melbourne champion Osaka was on course to clash with third seed Gauff in the next round.

But the former world number one needed treatment on her stomach during the first set against Belinda Bencic and called it quits after losing the opener on a tiebreak.

Osaka, who retired from the final in Auckland with an abdominal injury in the lead-up to Melbourne, said: “If I could have served, then I could have potentially won and I could have maybe gone far in the tournament.”

She added: “It sucks.”

Bencic will face Gauff after the American eased to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Canada’s 30th seed Leylah Fernandez.

Gauff is yet to drop a set this season in eight matches, having won all five of her singles at the United Cup.

Seventh seed Jessica Pegula, the US Open finalist last year, was a surprise straight-sets loser to Serbia’s Olga Danilovic.

Second seed Iga Swiatek plays Emma Raducanu, a clash between former US Open champions, in the pick of the women’s matches on Saturday.

Naomi Osaka said on Monday she was struggling to keep focused at the Australian Open with the deadly and massive wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles “three blocks” from her house. The two-time Melbourne champion defeated France’s Caroline Garcia 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round and afterwards said: “I was watching the fire map and the fire is three blocks from my house. I had someone go get my daughter’s birth certificate.” The 27-year-old former world number one, who has a young daughter named Shai, represents Japan but lives in Los Angeles.

After setting up a second-round meeting at Melbourne Park with Czech 20th seed Karolina Muchova, Osaka said “honestly I don’t think I’ve been doing the greatest keeping focus”.

“It is really difficult for me because, I don’t know, I think it’s tougher now because I find now my home is more of a home because I have memories with my daughter.

“There’s so many things, keepsakes and stuff like that. Obviously you can’t hoard them all when you’re asking them to go to your house and just grab stuff. So it is really tough in that sense.”

At least 24 people have been killed in the blazes that have ripped through the United States’ second-largest city for the past week.

Whole communities have been scorched to rubble and thousands left without homes.

Osaka said everyone in her family was safe but she is “checking the wildfire map any chance that I get just to see what’s happening”.

“I also feel like in a way it’s tough because I don’t think I’ll go back to L.A immediately after. I don’t feel like it’s safe enough to go back there,” she said.

“It’s kind of a little bit in a limbo, but also motivating me to hopefully stay here as long as I can.”

Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka says she and her American rapper boyfriend Cordae have split up just days ahead of the Australian Open. The couple have been together since 2019 and share a young daughter, Shai. “Hi everyone, just wanted to say that Cordae and I are no longer in a relationship,” the four-time Grand Slam champion wrote on Instagram late Monday. “No bad blood at all, he’s a great person and an awesome dad. Honestly really glad our paths crossed because my daughter is my biggest blessing and I was able to grow a lot from our experiences together.”

She ended the post with a red heart emoji, without saying when they parted ways.

Osaka reached her first WTA final since 2022 at the Auckland Classic over the weekend.

But she pulled out with an abdominal injury after taking the opening set 6-4.

The 27-year-old was not thought to be badly hurt, with the Australian Open starting on Sunday.

Four-time major champion Naomi Osaka used a rain break to her advantage to power to a straight-sets win in the second round of the Auckland Classic on Wednesday. The Japanese star shook off some early mistakes to beat unseeded Austrian Julia Grabher 7-5, 6-3 and book a place in Friday’s quarter-finals at the Australian Open warm-up tournament. The first set went with serve to 5-5 before rain forced the players off court for just over an hour, allowing Osaka a chance to address a “nervous” start. She consulted coach Patrick Mouratoglou, the former mentor of Serena Williams. “I got some great advice from a great coach,” Osaka, a former world number one, said.

“I just tried to focus on my bullet points and go out swinging if I had to go out, but thankfully I’m here to play another round.”

The 27-year-old emerged to break late in the first set and early in the second to take control of the match in cool, windy conditions.

Osaka’s serving was her strength, landing five aces and winning more than 80 percent of her points on second serve.

While the world number 57 wasn’t broken, she struggled with her return of serve against Grabher, particularly in the first set.

“She was a really tough opponent to play against,” Osaka said.

“I just felt I had to concentrate on myself a lot and try not to be as nervous as I felt.”

Osaka has battled for consistency since returning to the court a year ago after the birth of daughter Shai in July 2023.

She said in the lead-up to Auckland that she was confident of revisiting her former glories.

Osaka climbed to world number one in early 2019 after winning the first of her two Australian Open titles.

The first Grand Slam of the year starts on January 12.
