Following his side’s eight-run defeat against Afghanistan in the Super Eights match of the T20 World Cup 2024, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto said that they made poor decisions while batting in the middle overs. Najmul Hossain Shanto displayed a poor performance in the second innings of the match. He scored 5 runs from 5 balls at a strike rate of 100.00. The Bangladesh skipper just slammed 1-four during his time on the crease. Speaking after the match, Shanto said that their plan was to go hard in the first six overs of the second innings. He also accepted that the middle order of Bangladesh’s batting lineup failed to execute.

He further added that the Bangladesh bowling attack performed well throughout the tournament.

“I think we bowled really well, we did lots of good things but as a batting unit, we made poor decisions, especially in the middle overs and that’s what cost us today. The plan was to go hard in the first six overs, if we lost early wickets, the plan was to bat normally, but that didn’t happen and the middle-order couldn’t execute. The whole tournament we have bowled really well, both the pacers and the spinners. Especially Rishad was great, the fast bowlers also did really well. Also, as a fielding group, we did well,” Shanto said.

Recapping the match, after winning the toss Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan decided to bat against Bangladesh.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (43 runs from 55 balls, 3 fours and 1 six) played a stupendous knock for the Afghan side and powered them to 115-5. Ibrahim Zadran (18 runs from 29 balls, 1 four) and Rashid Khan (19* runs from 10 balls, 3 sixes) tried their best in the final stage of the first inning and added some crucial runs on the scoreboard.

Rishad Hossain led the Bangladesh bowling attack after he picked up three wickets and gave 26 runs in his four-over spell.

The second inning of the match was reduced to 19 overs, and the target was 114 runs after rain played a spoilsport in the second inning.

During the run chase, Litton Das (54* runs from 49 balls, 5 fours, and 1 six) was the only standout batter for the Tigers as he scored the highest among his teammates.

Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan picked up four wickets each in their respective spells. Fazalhaq Farooqi and Gulbadin Naib also bagged one wicket each in their respective spells and helped the Afghan side win the match by eight runs.

After the defeat, Mitchell Marsh-led Australia are also out of the tournament. The Aussies ended up in third place in the Group 1 table of the Super Eights with just two points.

India will take on Bangladesh in the Super Eights Match 7 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2024. The game is set to take place at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, on Saturday (IST). India comes into this match with momentum, having defeated Afghanistan by 47 runs in their previous outing. Jasprit Bumrah was the standout performer for India, amassing 101 fantasy points. On the other hand, Bangladesh faced a setback in their last game, losing to Australia by 28 runs via the DLS method. Rishad Hossain was the top fantasy performer for Bangladesh, scoring 72 points.

Head-to-Head

Historically, India has dominated Bangladesh in T20Is, winning the majority of their 13 encounters. The pattern suggests India will likely continue their dominance. India’s batters have generally outperformed Bangladesh, while Bangladesh’s bowlers have been their main contributors.

The last meeting between these teams was in the 1st Semi-Final of the Asian Games Men’s T20I, 2023, where India’s Tilak Varma scored the highest fantasy points (134) and Parvez Hossain Emon led for Bangladesh with 31 points.

Key Players to Watch

Arshdeep Singh (IND)

India’s Arshdeep Singh, a left-arm medium-fast bowler, has been in stellar form, taking 12 wickets in his last five matches.

Hardik Pandya (IND)

All-rounder Hardik Pandya, known for his swashbuckling approach and right-arm medium-fast bowling, has scored 39 runs at an average of 19.5 in his recent three matches and has also taken seven wickets for India.

Mustafizur Rahman (BAN)

Mustafizur Rahman, the left-arm fast-medium bowler from Bangladesh, has taken seven wickets in his last five matches.

Axar Patel (IND)

Axar Patel, another all-rounder from India, has scored 32 runs in his recent five matches. Additionally, his slow left-arm orthodox bowling has yielded five wickets.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib (BAN)

The right-arm medium bowler from Bangladesh, Tanzim Hasan Sakib has taken nine wickets in his last five matches, boasting an impressive average of 7.8.

Shakib Al Hasan (BAN)

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, a left-handed top-order batter, has 100 runs in his recent five matches. His slow left-arm orthodox bowling has also contributed two wickets for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto acknowledged that his batters have been underperforming in the T20 World Cup but promised better showings with the bat in their remaining Super Eights matches including the next one against India. Bangladesh produced their best-ever showing at the T20 World Cup as they won three matches in the group stage to qualify for the Super Eights. But the Tigers were handed a 28-run DLS defeat by Australia in their opening Super Eight fixture. They take on India next.

“The next two matches are important. There is a lot to gain from them. If we can win them, we will be in a better condition. We will play to win every match,” Shanto said at the post-match press conference.

Bangladesh posted 140/8 in their 20 overs in yet another underwhelming batting display.

“Yes, there was big difference in the condition because last match there was a lot of spin and also seam but today the wicket looked flat… a very good wicket to bat and I think we didn’t bat well, so I think that is the big difference, probably we should have targeted 160 to 170.

“I think as a player we had to adjust but we couldn’t execute with that new ball, especially in the power play and we couldn’t finish last five-six overs, so we lost too many wickets, so if it ended well, we could have scored a proper 160 or 170,” he added.

Expectations were after their pre-tournament series loss to USA, but they made it out of a difficult group.

Asked why the team is struggling in batting, Shanto said, “It is difficult to say why we are not able to play. I think everyone has the capability, people have played well in different places in the past.

“But I do not have an answer to why this is not happening. Everyone has the freedom to play their natural game and they will try to play as they want, but somehow it is not happening.”

Premier pacer Pat Cummins grabbed the tournament’s first hat-trick and spinner Adam Zampa showcased his artistry to fashion Australia’s 28-run win over Bangladesh via the Duckworth Lewis (DLS) method in their Super Eights fixture of the T20 World Cup in Antigua. If Zampa (2/24) operated with precision in the middle overs, Cummins (3/29) claimed three wickets off successive balls at the back end, as Australia restricted Bangladesh to 140 for eight after Mitchell Marsh opted to bowl first in the rain-interrupted game.

Veteran opener David Warner (53 not out off 35 balls) then hit a scintillating half-century, a knock that was studded with five fours and three sixes.

Australia were in a hurry to finish the game with openers Warner and Travis Head (31) going hammer and tongs from the very first ball.

The pair raced to 60/0 before rain interrupted play. Once play resumed, the Aussies lost a bit of momentum as Rishad Hossain (2/23 in 3 overs) got into the act.

The young leg-spinner removed Head and Mitchell Marsh (1) in quick succession.

Despite the twin blows however, Australia never looked in trouble as Warner went about his business.

Playing his last T20 World Cup, he brought up his fifty with a majestic six.

When rain stopped play for the second time, Australia were 100 for two in 11.2 overs, 28 runs ahead of the DLS par score of 72.

Earlier, left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc expectedly gave Australia the early breakthrough as he got Tanzid Hasan in the first over to become the leading wicket-taker in World Cups (95), moving past Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga.

Liton Das (16) and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (41) repaired the innings by stitching a 58-run stand.

Shanto smacked Josh Hazlewood for a six over long on in the fourth over. He then took on Starc, hitting a couple of fours in the fifth over.

But when Zampa had the ball he immediately put an end to the partnership, trapping Das leg before wicket in the ninth over.

Australian spinners Zampa and Glenn Maxwell tightened the noose around Bangladesh who could only muster 26 runs from the ninth to the 13th over while losing Rishad Hossain (2), and the key wicket of Shanto, who was dismissed by Zampa.

Hridoy (40 off 28) took Bangladesh past the 100-run mark and tried hard to inflate his side’s total. He smashed back-to-back sixes off Marcus Stoinis.

But any chance of a strong finish by Bangladesh was dashed by Cummins who made a significant impact at the fag end of the innings.

The pacer took wickets off consecutive balls in the end of the 18th over. Mahmudullah attempted a pull shot but ended up playing the ball back on to his stumps. Cummins then had Mahedi Hasan caught by Zampa.

The pacer returned in the last over to send Hridoy packing with his first ball to complete the hat-trick.

Bangladesh stormed into the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup 2024, with a thumping victory over Nepal. Asked to bat first, Bangladesh had a terrible outing as they got bundled out for just 106 as Nepal’s entire bowling unit equally contributed. However in the second innings, the tables turned completely in the favour of Bangladesh as they bowled out Nepal for 85 and won the game by 21 runs. Nepal, who were already knocked out from the Super 8s race, now ended their T20 World Cup campaign with a humiliating defeat.

On a lighter note, a wild celebration from a Nepal fan caught everyone’s attention. During Bangladesh’s innings, Nepal skipper Rohit Paudel dismissed Towhid Hridoy for 9, who was caught by Sandeep Lamichhane at short-fine leg.

As Hridoy walked back to the dugout, the camera shifted towards the stands, where a Nepal fan could not hide his excitement and jumped into a pool to celebrate the wicket.

Pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib‘s career-best figures of 4 for 7 with an astounding 21 dot balls headlined Bangladesh’s dominant bowling performance as they entered the Super Eights of the T20 World Cup.

Having nearly shocked South Africa in their previous game, Nepal bowlers were again on target, bowling out Bangladesh for 106 but Tanzim along with seasoned Shakib al Hasan (2/9) and Mustafzur Rahaman (3/7) bowled out Nepal for 85 in 19.2 overs.

Nepal were on course at 78 for 5 at one stage before losing their last five wickets for seven runs as a determined Bangladesh team used all its reservoir of experience after a disappointing batting show.

“As a bowling unit we bowled really well. We could have done better with bat. The top order could have batted tighter. Bangladesh bowled really well with the new ball. Losing 4 wickets in the powerplay put us under a lot of pressure. They were always challenging us, they bowled really well in the powerplay,” said skipper Paudel after the match.

“As a batting unit we need to step up, we need to know where to score runs and how to assess conditions. We’re up to the mark with our bowling and fielding. This team has great potential, we need to back each and every player, I feel we will do very well in the next World Cup,” he added.
