An IPL contract might be on top of cricketers’ bucket list, but Mumbai’s teenaged Ranji Trophy hero Musheer Khan is happy that he went unsold during last year’s player auction because it gives him some more time to “understand” the T20 format. The 19-year-old, who became the youngest Mumbai batter to score a hundred in a Ranji final eclipsing the mark of legendary Sachin Tendulkar, was confident of making his mark in the IPL in due course.

“My name is not in the IPL. But I don’t feel disappointed. My father tells me to play Test cricket and play for Team India. IPL will eventually happen, if not today then tomorrow,” Musheer told PTI Video recalling the words of his father and formative coach Naushad.

“It’s good that I got another year to prepare for the IPL. I will understand T20 cricket more, and how I should prepare for this format,” said Musheer, who has so far played just five First-Class matches.

Musheer embossed his name on the Ranji final against Vidarbha recently with a 136 in the second innings that helped Mumbai set a massive target of 538. It eventually helped Mumbai land their record-extending 42nd title in the Ranji Trophy.

Understandably, Musheer drew inspiration from his elder brother Sarfaraz, who made his India debut in the third Test against England at Rajkot last month.

“I am really inspired by my brother because of his dedication and the way he bats. Our batting style is similar. He told me before the game (Ranji final) to think of it as a normal match and not to take too much pressure.” “From outside, it may feel like a normal match but on the field, we feel pressure on the field. He told me to back my skills and follow the process,” he added.

Musheer, who was also the leading run-scorer in the ICC Under-19 World Cup earlier this year including two hundreds, was quite chuffed after Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy triumph after a gap of eight years.

“It’s a matter of pride that we have amassed 42 titles. Many great players have played here (for Mumbai). I feel very proud that I have played for Mumbai and won a championship.

“I also want to thank the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and congratulate them because they have provided us with a lot of support. I hope they continue to back us in the same way,” he said.

The elegant right-hander lauded veteran pacer Dhawal Kulkarni, who retired after the Ranji Trophy final.

“The support he has given to Mumbai cricket, the things he has done for Mumbai, it’s incredible. The speech he gave ahead of the final was a real motivation for all of us.

“It was his last match. We were emotional and we wanted to win the trophy as a gift to Dhawal bhai. We wanted him to leave happily. He took the last wicket (of Vidarbha) of the match and everything came out perfectly,” he noted.

It was an emotional day for Naushad Khan and family as the younger son of the household – Musheer Khan – surpassed Sachin Tendulkar‘s record in Ranji Trophy final. Musheer is the brother of Sarfaraz Khan, who recently impressed during his Test debut. In the ongoing Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha, Musheer has given signs that he could be the star for the future. He scored a knock of 136 in 326 deliveries, consisting of 10 boundaries, helping Mumbai get a massive 500-plus run lead.

Musheer Khan thus became the youngest Mumbai batter to score a century in a Ranji Trophy final.  Sachin Tendulkar, who held the previous record was present at the stands, as the 19-year-old Musheer brought up his exquisitely carved ton in 255 balls.

Musheer, brother of India batter Sarfaraz Khan, is aged 19 years and 14 days, while Tendulkar was just below 22 years of age when he scored twin hundreds in the 1994-95 season final against Punjab.

A day after the feat, Sarfaraz Khan praised his brother’s performance in a series of Instagram stories.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

During the semifinal against Tamil Nadu, Musheer played an important hand with the bat, scoring a valuable 55 in 131 balls, with six fours, before all-rounder Shardul Thakur hit a brilliant counter-attacking century to give Mumbai a 232-run lead. Mumbai won the match by an innings and 70 runs.

During the quarterfinal against Baroda, Musheer converted his maiden first-class century into a double ton, smashing 203 in 357 balls, with 18 fours in the first innings. He scored a quickfire 33 in 25 balls, with five fours in the second innings. Mumbai won on the basis of their first-innings lead after the match ended in a draw.

In three matches so far, Musheer has scored 433 runs at an average of 108.25, with two centuries and a half-century. His best score is 203*.

In the U19 WC tournament, Musheer played seven matches, scoring 360 runs at an average of 60, with a strike rate of over 98. He scored two centuries and a fifty in the tournament, ending as the second-highest run-scorer. His best score was 131.

Also, he has played 14 Youth ODIs, scoring 554 runs at an average of 61.55, with two centuries and two fifties. With 13 wickets, Musheer is also a useful spin-bowling all-rounder.

Recently, his elder brother Sarfaraz Khan also made his much-anticipated international debut against India in the third Test against England at Rajkot. He scored twin half-centuries in his debut match. He ended the series with 200 runs in five innings at an average of 50.00, with three half-centuries.

A fine century by U19 cricket star Musheer Khan and a commendable half-century by Shreyas Iyer guided Mumbai to a 537-run lead over Vidarbha in the final of the ongoing Ranji Trophy, setting the visitors a mammoth target to 538 runs to capture their third title at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday. At the end of day three, Vidarbha was 10/0, with Atharva Taide (3*) and Dhruv Shorey (7*) unbeaten. Mumbai started the day three at 141/2, with Musheer (51*) and skipper Ajinkya (58*) unbeaten. They had a lead of 260 runs. Mumbai reached the 150-run mark 54.2 overs. They could add only 23 runs more to their total before skipper Rahane was undone by Harsh Dubey, caught behind by Akshay Wadkar for 73 in 143 balls, with five fours and a six. The 41-time champions were 164/3 and the 130-run partnership between Musheer and Rahane was broken.

Shreyas Iyer, another batter struggling for form, was next up on the crease. Iyer played his attacking brand of cricket, unfazed by talks around his form while Musheer held the other end steady. 200-run mark was up for Mumbai in 71 overs after a cracking boundary by Iyer on a Yash Thakur delivery.

Iyer reached his half-century in 62 balls, with six fours and two sixes.

Mumbai crossed the 250-run mark in 82.3 overs, with Iyer smashing Karun Nair for a four over long-on.

The duo brought up their century stand in 157 balls.

Musheer delivered yet another quality knock on the big stage, reaching his second first-class century in 255 balls. This marathon effort was laced with six fours. He also brought his side’s 300-run mark up in 91.4 overs with a boundary.

The 168-run partnership between the duo ended as Iyer was dismissed by Aditya Thakare for 95 in 111 balls, with 10 fours and three sixes, caught by Aman Mokhade at long-off. Mumbai was 332/4.

Following Iyer’s dismissal, Mumbai lost wickets at regular intervals, with Musheer falling to Dubey for 136 in 326 balls, with 10 fours. Shardul Thakur, who had hit a hard-hitting 75 in the first innings, was also clean-bowled by Dubey for a duck. Shams Mulani held the other end all this while, scoring an unbeaten 50 in 85 balls, with six fours.

Mumbai was all-out for 418, gaining a lead of 537 runs.

Harsh Dubey was the pick of the bowlers for Vidarbha, taking 5/144 in 48 overs. Yash also took 3/79 in 22.2 overs. Aditya and Aman also took a wicket each.

Chasing 538 runs, openers Atharva and Dhruv guided their side through the remainder of the day without any loss of wicket.

Legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s presence on the second day served as a huge motivating factor for 19-year-old Mumbai batter Musheer Khan, whose patient 136 turned the Ranji Trophy final result into a mere formality with hosts out-batting Vidarbha by third day itself. The batting legend was present for the morning session on the third day as Musheer piled up his second century in the three knockout games of this season’s Ranji Trophy to help Mumbai extend their advantage. Musheer’s ton on the third day, came after his splendid 203 not out in the quarterfinal against Baroda and a vital 55 against Tamil Nadu in the semifinal, helping Mumbai set a mammoth 538-run target for Vidarbha.

“I did not even know that Sachin sir was here,” Musheer told the media after the end of play on Day 3.

“But when I was batting on 60, I saw on him on the big screen and (thereon) I batted with the motivation that he is watching today and I have to impress sir,” he said.

Tendulkar’s along with India captain Rohit Sharma’s presence at the Wankhede, also underlined the growing importance of domestic red-ball matches.

Musheer said sharing time in the middle with Test veteran like Rahane and a senior international like Iyer helped him learn a lot.

“I got to learn a lot during the partnerships. It is a matter of pride for me that I got to bat with two Test players, it becomes easier for me too. Everyone in their team was trying to get Ajju dada (Ajinkya Rahane) out and it becomes easier for me,” Musheer said.

The teenager said that it was a dream come true for him to have scored a century in the final of India’s premier domestic tournament.

“It was a dream for me to score a century in the Ranji Trophy final. We (Iyer and Musheer) had a good partnership, we communicated well and (Iyer) bhai was insisting that we have to bat for long period and take the game as far as we can,” he said.

Musheer said there was no risk involved in his tendency to move down the line of deliveries since he has practised a lot for it.

“When I was dropped from the Ranji Trophy (squad) last year, I got to learn a lot about the (need to) work on the technique. I have done a lot of preparations with abbu, there still is a lot to do,” Musheer said.

“There are some wickets where the ball keeps coming straight at you but one odd-delivery cuts (from the pitch), hence I try to not let the bowler settle down and find the right spot to bowl at.” For Musheer, there is risk even while one is defending instead of going on the offensive.

“Risk is there in everything. There is risk in defending too — what if there is a bat-pad situation to get out. But I have a lot of confidence with it; I have done a lot of preparation and practise by moving in the front,” Musheer said.

“I am also ready for the bouncer. If someone bowls that, I can duck too. I move in the front but not with the intent to hit unless I get a half volley,” he added.

Musheer, who is now the youngest to have scored a century for Mumbai in a Ranji Trophy final bettering Rusi Modi’s record, revealed that his brother and India player Sarfaraz Khan asked him to forget the first-innings failure and back himself in the second.

“I had spoken with bhai earlier and he told me that this is a good opportunity for me in the final, with everyone watching. If I would make runs here, it would be better for me in the future,” said Musheer, who joined his brother in scoring a century in the final of Ranji Trophy.

“When I got out (for cheap) in the first innings, (he told me) it’s okay, back yourself in the second innings and play your game. He told me to bat the way I found was comfortable,” he added.

Skipper Ajinkya Rahane bucked the trend of poor scores with a timely unbeaten 58 as Mumbai took a 260-run lead against Vidarbha at close on day two of the Ranji Trophy final on Monday. While young Musheer Khan reined in his aggression to make a gritty 51 not out, Rahane negotiated the Vidarbha bowling attack with utmost patience and precision to put Mumbai, who are aiming for a record 42nd Ranji title, in pole position. At stumps, the hosts were 141 for 2 in their second innings. Having being shot out for a meagre 224 in the first innings on the first day, Mumbai came roaring back in the first session to take a 119-run lead as Vidarbha, resuming at 31/3, were dismissed for 105 in the first innings.

Rahane and Musheer came together after Mumbai lost openers Prithvi Shaw (11) and Bhupen Lalwani (18) early in their second dig, with the game delicately placed shortly after lunch.

Shaw was cleaned up when Yash Thakur got one to nip back as the ball sneaked between the India player’s bat and pads. Lalwani was caught at midwicket off Harsh Dubey (1/46).

Old warhorse Rahane and Musheer were clinical as they frustrated the opposition for more than three hours to ensure the game tilted heavily in their favour when stumps were drawn.

Rahane, who has averaged just 12 runs this season, began cautiously but grew in confidence to bring up only his second fifty of the tournament, reaching 58 not out off 109 balls with the help of four boundaries and a six.

At the other end, Musheer kept committing himself on the front foot, meeting most of the deliveries with a dead bat to consume 134 balls for his unbeaten 51 with three fours.

The two right-handers took their time to build the unbeaten third-wicket stand of 107 runs from 232 balls.

A bit of luck favoured Rahane late in the day when Harsh Dubey pinned the batter in front of the wickets to get an on-field call for a leg-before. But Rahane quickly took the DRS, which showed the ball had kissed the inside edge of the bat before hitting the pads.

Musheer followed the team’s instruction to a tee by dropping anchor, tiring out the opposition bowlers.

Mumbai’s cause was also aided by the fact that Vidarbha’s ace spinner Aditya Sarwate was under-bowled owing to an injury.

Earlier, Vidarbha showed no conviction or game plan as they were skittled out for just 105 in their first essay.

Having lost three wickets overnight, including two key batters in Dhruv Shorey and Karun Nair, Vidarbha began cautiously but failed to stem the slide despite the pitch conducive for batting.

The lack of initiative was evident with Vidarbha neither succeeding in striking enough boundaries not being able to rotate the strike.

Nightwatchman Aditya Thakare (19 off 69 deliveries) though performed his role admirably, holding one end up while Yash Rathod (27 off 67 balls) looked appealing.

Dhawal Kulkarni added one more wicket to his tally to return figures of 3/15, while Mumbai spinners Shams Mulani (3/32) and Tanush Kotian (4.3-1-7-3) ruled the roost in the first session.

Kulkarni bagged the first scalp of the day when he had opener Atharva Taide caught behind for a 60-ball 23.

Mulani persistently troubled a resolute Thakare until he pinned the batter down leg-before, ending his 69-ball vigil.

Left-arm spinner Mulani ensured a short stay for Dubey (1), getting him caught bat-pad, which was confirmed by the review.

Tanush Kotian had Yash Rathod chopping one onto his wickets. The spinner did not waste time in getting Yash Thakur (16) and Umesh Yadav (2) caught by Tushar Deshpande to wrap up the tail.

Brief scores: Mumbai 224 & 141/2 in 50 overs (Musheer Khan 51 batting, Ajinkya Rahane 58 batting; Yash Thakur 1/25) lead Vidarbha 105 in 45.3 overs (Yash Rathod 27; Dhawal Kulkarni 3/15, Shams Mulani 3/32, Tanush Kotian 3/7) by 260 runs.

Mumbai were ahead by 257 runs in the first innings after Musheer Khan struck an unbeaten 203, with Baroda reaching 127/2 in reply by the close of play on day two of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal on Saturday. Bhargav Bhatt toiled to return a seven-wicket haul but Musheer worked his way to a fine unbeaten double hundred, powering Mumbai to 383 in the first innings at the BKC Ground.

The visitors were then jolted early in their first innings with opening batter and India U-19 World Cup player Priyanshu Moliya (1) cleaned up by Shardul Thakur, followed by Shams Mulani striking soon to dismiss Jyotsnil Singh for 32.

Baroda were reduced to 65/2 in the 23rd over when the pair of Shashwat Rawat and skipper Vishnu Solanki got together to take their side to the end of play without any further damage.

Rawat was batting on 69 from 88 balls with the help of nine boundaries, whereas Solanki reached 23 not out from 38 balls with a couple of hits to the fence while putting on unbeaten 62 runs for the third wicket.

However, the limelight of the day was once again hogged by Musheer, who converted his maiden first-class hundred into a big score while laying down the foundation for a strong first innings total for Mumbai.

Musheer reached 203 not out from 357 balls with the help of 18 boundaries as his contribution was vital for the home team to get closer to the 400-run mark from 99/4 at one stage on the first day.

The 18-year-old right-handed batter formed a crucial eighth-wicket stand for 181 runs with wicketkeeper-batter Hardik Tamore (57), who himself struck a fine half-century under pressure.

Tamore faced as many as 248 balls and hit only three boundaries to keep the Baroda attack at bay and worked with Musheer to take Mumbai from 142/5 to 323 when the pair was separated.

The hosts were were bowled out for 383 from 140.4 overs with Bhatt adding three more wickets to his first day haul, finishing with 7/112 from as many as 42.4 overs.

Ninad Rathva also shared a heavy bowling workload, returning 38-4-86-3 to account for the remaining wickets.

Brief scores: Mumbai 383 in 140.4 overs (Prithvi Shaw 33, Musheer Khan 203*, Hardik Tamore 57; Bhargav Bhatt 7/112, Ninad Rathva 3/86) lead Baroda 127/2 in 35 overs (Jyotsnil Singh 32, Shashwat Rawat 69*; Shardul Thakur 1/25) by 257 runs.

Sai Kishore, Indrajith, Kumar hand Tamil Nadu lead vs Saurashtra

Skipper R Sai Kishore led by example before Baba Indrajith and Boopathi Kumar struck useful half-centuries to hand Tamil Nadu advantage in their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Saurasthra in Coimbatore on Saturday. Thanks to their efforts, Tamil Nadu reached 300 for six at stumps on the second day of the match, giving them a lead of 117 runs with four first-innings wickets in hand.

Resuming the day at 23 for one, night-watchman Sai Kishore (60) and opener Narayan Jagadeesan (37) managed to put on a 54-run partnership for the second wicket before Parth Bhut trapped the latter leg-before with the team score reading 63.

The hosts were in a spot of bother at 85 for three when Pradosh Ranjan Paul (13) fell to Parth Bhut, but Sai Kishore and Indrajith (80) added 49 runs for the fourth wicket to steady the ship.

Sai Kishore, who grabbed five wickets in Saurashtra’s first innings, brought up his third first-class half-century before being dismissed by Jaydev Unadkat.

Boopathi Kumar (65), along with Indrajith, then stitched an impressive 119-run stand for the fifth wicket to put their team in control.

Indrajith was looking good for what would have been his 17th first-class hundred but Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, the visitors’ highest wicket-taker of the season, got rid of the seasoned TN batter, with the team score reading 253 for five.

For the addition 14 runs, Boopathi was cleaned up by Yuvrajsinh Dodiya.

Vijay Shankar (14 batting) and Mohamed Ali (17 batting) saw the day out as Tamil Nadu finished the day with their nose well ahead.

For Saurashtra, it has been a collective effort from their bowling unit with all five bowlers finding themselves among wickets.

Brief scores: Saurashtra 183 trail Tamil Nadu 300-6 (Baba Indrajith 80; Parth Bhut 2/76) by 117 runs.

A collective bowling performance helped Madhya Pradesh stage a remarkable fightback and extend their overall lead to 83 runs at stumps on the second day of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Andhra in Indore on Saturday. The 2021-22 winners MP resumed the day at 234 for 9 and they lost their last wicket without adding any run to their total. They had squandered a perfect start to their first innings when openers Yash Dubey (64) and Himanshu Mantri (49) put on 123 for the first wicket.

For Andhra, KV Sasikanth took 4 for 37 while Nithish Kumar Reddy returned with figures of 3/50. Shoaib Mohammed Khan and Girinath Reddy also chipped in with a wicket each as Andhra had a platform set to capitalise on the game.

But Madhya Pradesh bowlers joined forces to pull off a remarkable performance, bowling out Andhra for a mere 172 in their first innings to hand their side a 62-run lead.

None of the Andhra batters could make a mark against a probing MP bowling line-up. Andhra skipper and current Ranji season leading run-scorer Ricky Bhui was dismissed for 32 (53 balls, 5x4s, 1x6s) by Kulwant Khejroliya.

The damage, however, was done at the top by MP and India bowler Avesh Khan who removed Andhra opener DB Prashanth Kumar for a four-ball duck and also accounted for No. 3 Ashwin Hebbar for just one.

Anubhav Agarwal trapped K Revanth Reddy leg-before for 22 and also pinned India batter Hanuma Vihari for 14 in front of the wickets.

Late in the innings, Agarwal accounted for the dangerous Shoaib Mohammad Khan for 22 to return with a fine 18-6-33-3.

Left-arm spinner Kumar Kartikeya also got into the act to return 3/41 from his 19 overs, accounting for the highest-scorer of the innings Karan Shinde (38), Nithish (7) and Sasikanth (12).

The visiting side were bowled out for 172 in 68.3 overs, following which Madhya Pradesh reached 21 for no loss at stumps on the second day with an overall lead of 83 runs.

Dubey was batting on six while wicketkeeper-batter Mantri reached 50 not out with the help of three fours to make it MP’s day on Saturday.

Brief Scores: Madhya Pradesh 234 in 81.1 overs (Yash Dubey 64, Himanshu Mantri 49, Saransh Jain 41 not out; Nithish Kumar Reddy 3/50, KV Sasikanth 4/37) and 21/0 in 7 overs (Himanshu Mantri 15 not out) lead Andhra 172 in 68.3 overs (Karan Shinde 38; Anubhav Agarwal 3/38, Kumar Kartikeya 3/41) by 83 runs.

India U-19 World Cup star Musheer Khan came to Mumbai’s rescue with his maiden first class hundred as the hosts recovered from a precarious position to reach 248 for five on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Baroda in Mumbai on Friday. The 18-year-old Musheer, who was among the leading run-scorers in the recently-concluded U-19 World Cup in South Africa, was at the forefront of Mumbai’s recovery who were jolted multiple times after electing to bat here at the BKC Ground.

Musheer raised a well-calculated 128 not out off 216 balls, studded with 10 fours, while putting on two crucial partnerships to lead the recovery for Mumbai who were reeling at 99 for four at one stage.

Musheer, the younger brother of India batter Sarfaraz Khan, came into the playing eleven as a replacement for the injured all-rounder Shivam Dube.

Baroda veteran Bhargav Bhatt (4/82) struck thrice to jolt Mumbai early in the contest, accounting for Prithvi Shaw (33), Bhupen Lalwani (19) and Ajinkya Rahane, whose ordinary form with the bat persisted.

The swashbuckling Shaw appeared to be in his usual elements cracking six boundaries to get 33 from just 46 balls, but he was stumped by Baroda wicketkeeper Mitesh Patel off Bhatt in the 14th over.

Shaw seemed to have done his job, having taken Mumbai off to a confident start, while putting on 57 runs for the first wicket with Bhupen Lalwani but once they were separated, it all went south for the home side playing in favourable conditions.

Baroda did not have to wait longer for further inroads as Mumbai’s in-form opener Lalwani perished for just 19 from 41 balls with three fours, caught by Shivalik Sharma off Bhatt.

Rahane’s ordinary run with the bat continued when the Mumbai captain was cleaned up by Bhatt for a mere 3, whereas Ninad Rathva piled up further pressure on the 41-time champions by removing all-rounder Shams Mulani (6) for cheap.

Coming in to bat at No. 3, Musheer did well to stem the flow of wickets for Mumbai with a 43-run stand for the fifth wicket with Suryansh Shedge (20), followed by a splendid unbeaten 106-run stand for the sixth wicket with Hardik Tamore.

Mumbai wicketkeeper-batter Tamore dropped anchor to play a perfect second fiddle to Musheer, scoring a mere 30 runs not out off 163 balls in their unbeaten century stand.

Earlier in the day, the players observed a two-minute silence on the passing away of former Maharashtra chief minister and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Manohar Joshi.

Mumbai players also took the field wearing black armbands in his memory.

Sai Kishore bags five as Tamil Nadu demolish Saurashtra for 183

Tamil Nadu skipper R Sai Kishore continued his fine run in Ranji Trophy, scalping five wickets to help his side dismiss defending champions Saurashtra for 183 on day one of the quarterfinal match in Coimbatore on Friday.

With 43 wickets, the 27-year-old spinner has become the highest wicket-taker in the tournament so far this season.

In reply, Tamil Nadu were 23 for 1, with Saurashtra ahead by 160 runs.

The visitors opted to bat after winning the toss and almost immediately suffered a setback with Kevin Jivrajani (0) falling prey to Sandeep Warrier.

Opener Harvik Desai (83) and Sheldon Jackson (22) added 47 more to the total before the latter was cleaned up by Sai Kishore.

Cheteshwar Pujara (2), Saurahstra’s highest run-scorer this season, was sent back by Ajith Ram, with the score reading 61 for three.

Desai and Arpit Vasavada (25) then stitched a 44-run stand for the fourth wicket. However, the hosts ensured the partnership did last too long for comfort, with Ajith Ram trapping the latter leg before.

Thereafter, Saurashtra failed to get any proper partnership going, barely managing a couple of 30-plus stands.

Sai Kishore got rid of Dharmendrasinh Jadeja (0), Chirag Jani (0), skipper Jaydev Unadkat (1) and Yuvrajsinh Dodiya (0) to bundle out the visitors for 183. Prerak Mankad remained unbeaten on 35.

Besides Sai Kishore, Ajith Ram and Sandeep Warrier also played their part in bowling, grabbing three and two wickets respectively.

Tamil Nadu too had an inauspicious start, losing Vimal Khumar (5) to Chirag Jani with just nine runs on the board.

Sai Kishore walked in next as the night-watchman, managing to bat out the remaining six overs for the day, as the hosts finished at 23 for one, trailing by 160 runs.
