Indian pacer Mayank Yadav enthralled cricket lovers as he made his T20I debut against Bangladesh in Gwalior on Sunday. After Mayank’s potential breakout season in the Indian Premier League was lost to injury, the 22-year-old stepped onto the crease in India colours for the first time. He was handed the debut cap by former India spinner Murali Kartik, who is working in the series as a commentator. Kartik, however, later highlighted India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s brilliant gesture, in asking him to be the one handing Mayank his debut T20I cap.

“What a memorable day for this Speed Merchant #MayankYadav ..it took me back 25 yrs when I received my cap from Sachin& Kapil paaji… A touching moment for me personally to be asked to present the cap by @GautamGambhir …a wonderful gesture,” Kartik posted on X (formerly Twitter).

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar handed the ball to the young tearaway in the final over of the powerplay. Mayank set his eyes on the opportunity to blow Bangladesh away and delivered a maiden over with his sheer pace and precision.

As Towhid Hridoy failed to garner a single run in the youngster’s over, Mayank became just the third Indian cricketer to bowl a maiden in his first over in the T20I format.

Mayank made waves in his debut with his pace and added a wicket to his name while giving away 21 runs in his four-over spell at an economy of 5.20. As he sent thunderbolts down with his pace, Bangladesh’s experienced all-rounder Mahmudullah became his first T20I victim. After warming himself up in his first over, Mayank brought heat to Gwalior with a scorching 146.1kph delivery.

The pace itself was enough to confuse the experienced star. He danced around the crease, tried to slice the ball and lofted it straight into the hands of Washington Sundar at deep point.

Mayank added to an all-rounder performance from the Indian side and helped the hosts seal a 7-wicket win in the series opener. Bangladesh folded on 127, and India breezed past Bangladesh to chase down the total with a handful of overs to spare.

Former India spinner Murali Kartik was touched after head coach Gautam Gambhir invited him to present Mayank Yadav with his maiden India cap ahead of the T20I series opener against Bangladesh at Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium in Gwalior. Mayank Yadav and Nitish Kumar Reddy bith made their T2OI debut on Sunday against Bangladesh. Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, who was also part of the cap ceremony, presented fellow debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy with his India cap.

Kartik, visibly touched by the gesture, recalled his own India debut when he received his first cap from cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev 25 years ago.

“What a memorable day for this Speed Merchant Mayank Yadav… it took me back 25 yrs when I received my cap from Sachin & Kapil Paaji… A touching moment for me personally to be asked to present the cap by GautamGambhir, a wonderful gesture,” Kartik posted on X.

Kartik made his international Test debut back in 2000 against South Africa at Wankhede. He played eight Tests, 37 ODIs and a T2OI, claiming 61 wickets across the formats.

The former left-arm spinner offered words of encouragement to the young pacer Mayank, a 22-year-old fast bowler known for his ability to clock deliveries at 150 kph. He was making waves after just four matches in the 2024 IPL season. Mayank’s selection into the national team was fast-tracked following a strong recovery from a back injury.

Mayank did not disappoint on his debut. His first over in international cricket was a maiden, and he followed it up by picking his first wicket in his second over, finishing with an impressive 1 for 21 in his spell.

Nitish Kumar Reddy also contributed with an unbeaten 16, displaying composure in his debut outing.

India dominated the first T20I, led by Hardik Pandya’s all-round brilliance. Chasing a target of 128, India cruised to a seven-wicket victory, reaching the target in just 11.5 overs.

As India looked to bundle out Bangladesh’ batting unit early on Day 5 of the Kanpur Test, Mushfiqur Rahim stood between the hosts’ pursuit of quick wickets. The Bangladesh wicket-keeper batter used sweep shot as a weapon to counter the spin threat posed by India’s Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. Rahim did very well in facing India’s spin twins, prompting a discussion in the commentary box, involving Ravi Shastri and Atahr Ali Khan. When former Bangladesh cricketer, Athar Ali, highlighting Rahim’s proficiency in using sweep shots against spinners, Shastri asked him to name one wicket-keeper who doesn’t sweep, hoping his question would only be met with silence.

However, former India cricketer Murali Kartik, who was also in the commentary box with Shastri and Athar Ali, jumped into the conversation and answered Shastri’s question by mentioning MS Dhoni.

Athar Ali highlighted how Mushfiqur is a good example of how sweep shots can help batters nullify spin threats. This is when Shastri said, “Name me one keeper who doesn’t sweep.”

But, Kartik’s mention of Dhoni left Shastri stunned. As a matter of fact, Dhoni is a bottom-handed player who hardly tried to play sweep shots against spinners. Instead, he would use his feet to advance down the track in order to tackle tricky spinners.

Despite not possessing a weapon like a sweep shot in his armoury, Dhoni is widely seen as one of the finest batters against spinners.

Rahim was eventually dismissed by pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who delivered an off-cutter to uproot the Bangladesh wicket-keeper batter’s middle stump. In the process, Team India secured a 7-wicket victory against Bangladesh to clean sweep the series 2-0. India head earlier won the first Test by a whopping margin of 280 runs.

However, the win in the Kanpur Test was extra special considering the total play possible was less than 2 days.

Former Indian spinner Murali Kartik revealed on Saturday that the out-of-form Bangladesh all-rounder is suffering from discomfort in his spinning finger and shoulder. The all-rounder bowled seven overs on day three after skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto brought him into the attack, but was hit by Rishabh Pant for six fours and two sixes in a poor spell. This year has been tough for the veteran, having scored just 295 runs in 18 innings across all formats at an average of 19.66, with one fifty. He has also taken just 18 wickets at an average of 39.88 with the best figures of 4/35.

Kartik, handling the broadcasting duties in the match, was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo that Hasan has had a finger surgery on his bowling finger.

“Having seen him and known him for such a long period of time, I did go up to him and ask the reason why he has not bowled enough. And the thing which he said to me is something I completely resonate with. He has had a finger surgery on his bowling finger, which is the point of his finger of his left hand. It is swollen, it is rigid, there is no movement, no suppleness to it. So he feels he is not getting any feeling out of it. As a spinner you need the feeling. Also he is having issues with his shoulder so it is a combination of both and it’s tough to bowl in Test cricket where you need that feel as a spinner,” said Kartik.

Shakib faced a left index finger injury during the match against Sri Lanka in the 50-over World Cup last year, which kept him out of action for a few months. He also had an eye problem, which delayed his return to the Bangladesh team, having made his return in March this year.

Former Bangladesh captai Tamim Iqbal said that if Bangladesh picked up Shakib despite his injuries, they are playing a bowler short.

“Murali Kartik said that Shakib is having trouble gripping the ball due to this finger injury. If that is the case, Bangladesh are playing with four frontline bowlers. The team management should inform whether they knew about this injury or not,” Tamim said.

However, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief physician Dr Debashish said that they are not aware of any discomfort to Shakib due to an injury.

“Shakib had a fracture in his finger from the World Cup in India. Before that, he had an infection from another finger injury a few years ago. Shakib,, though has not recently complained about a finger or shoulder injury. A broken finger however can cause discomfort,” he concluded.

Former Indian cricket team spinner Murali Kartik faced a lot of criticism on social media for his on-air comments on Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Yash Dayal during the IPL 2024 match against Punjab Kings on Monday. Dayal ended up conceding five sixes in five balls against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL – an unwanted feat that had an immense impact on the young cricketer. However, he was picked by RCB for Rs 5 crore at the IPL 2024 auction and while speaking about the move, Kartik said – “Someone’s trash is someone’s treasure”. The comment wasn’t taken positively by many social media users.

“How do you say someone’s trash is someone’s treasure? You just called Yash Dayal Trash on air! Like what even?,” comedian and television host Danish Sait posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The Royal Challengers Bangalore took to social media to give a befitting response to Kartik over his on-air comment.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has surpassed Suresh Raina to become the Indian player with the most catches in the men’s T20 format.

Kohli made the record during clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS).

The 35-year-old took PBKS batters Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan‘s catches to complete his 174th in the T20 format.

He went past former India cricketer Suresh Raina who has 172 catches to his name. India skipper Rohit Sharma is in the third spot with 167 catches in his kitty. India batters Manish Pandey and Suryakumar Yadav are in the fourth and fifth spots with 146 and 136 catches respectively.

Overall in international T20 cricket, former West Indies cricketer Kieron Pollard is at the summit with 362 catches to his name.

South African batter David Miller is in the second spot with 290 catches to his name. Former West Indies batter Dwayne Bravo is in the third spot with 271 catches in the T20 format.
