Mundra Port has played a pivotal role in India’s maritime infrastructure.

The Mundra Port operated by Adani Ports and SEZ Limited, said the port reached a “significant milestone” by handling 396 vessels and executing 845 vessel movements in November this year, marking the “highest monthly record in our history.”

The Adani Ports and SEZ Limited made the announcement through an X post.

Mundra Port’s evolution is a testament to its role as a vital commercial gateway, handling nearly 11% of India’s maritime cargo and 33% of the nation’s container traffic. Since its inception, the port has contributed over Rs 2.25 lakh crore to state and national exchequers and created more than 7.5 crore man-days of employment. Its development has attracted investments exceeding Rs70,000 crore, and through the Adani Foundation, community initiatives have benefited over 3.5 lakh people across 61 villages.

In a ceremony in October marking 25 years of Mundra Port, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel released a commemorative postal stamp to honour the port’s contributions to India’s maritime and economic growth.

The event, held on World Post Day, highlights the transformation of Mundra Port from a single jetty in 1998 into India’s largest commercial port and a key global maritime hub.

Mundra Port has played a pivotal role in India’s maritime infrastructure, serving both coastal and hinterland regions, while also expanding globally with operations in Sri Lanka, Israel, and Tanzania. The company’s vision is to become the world’s largest ports and logistics platform within the next decade.

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani addresses students at Jai Hind College

New Delhi:

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani today looked back on the long journey he has taken in building his business and shared details about some key moments from his experience.

“… What you dream, you create. What you think, you become,” Mr Adani said as he addressed students in Mumbai’s Jai Hindi College on Teachers’ Day.

One of the highlights of his address was what he called his “karmabhoomi”, referring to the phenomenal story of how Gujarat’s Mundra Port was developed.

The deep draft, all-weather port is the largest commercial port in India with state-of-the-art infrastructure.

“In 1995, the Gujarat government announced its port-led industrial development plan through public-private partnerships. Around that time, we had been approached by the global commodities trader Cargill. It was a proposal to partner for manufacturing and sourcing salt from the Kutch region. While the partnership did not materialise, we were left with about 40,000 acres of marshy land and approval to build a captive jetty at Mundra for the export of salt,” Mr Adani said.

“What others saw as marshy barren land, we saw as a canvas waiting to be transformed. That canvas is now by far our nation’s largest port. Mundra became my karmabhoomi and made my vision a reality, a powerful testimony to the fact what you dream, you create, and what you think, you become,” he said.

Mr Adani said Mundra today hosts India’s largest port, the largest industrial Special Economic Zone (SEZ), the largest container terminals, the largest thermal power plant, the largest solar manufacturing facility, the largest copper plant, and the largest edible oil refinery.

“And yet, we’re only about 10 per cent of what Mundra will eventually become. It stands as a living monument to the power of integrated business models and the strategic value of adjacencies, challenging the very concept of core competencies that the West advocates,” Mr Adani said.

With deep draft berths and multipurpose terminals, Mundra port efficiently handles the largest bulk carriers in the world. The port has covered and open storage areas with enormous capacity. Excellent cargo evacuation and receiving infrastructure, support smooth cargo movement in and out of the port.

Had a very engaging discussion with Amb Hiroshi Suzuki of Japan, Mr Adani said.

Ahmedabad:

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, said on Wednesday that he met Hiroshi Suzuki, Ambassador of Japan to India, adding that the envoy’s appreciation for India’s culture and his tremendous support for the country are “truly inspiring”.

In a post on X, Gautam Adani said he is grateful for Suzuki’s visit to the company’s Mundra Port and Khavda (in Gujarat) where Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) is developing the world’s largest renewable energy project of 30,000 MW (30 GW) on barren land.

“Had a very engaging discussion with Amb Hiroshi Suzuki of Japan. We are grateful for his visit to our Mundra Port and to Khavda where we are building the world’s largest Hybrid Renewable Energy Park of 30 GW capacity,” said the Chairman of the Adani Group.

“The ambassador’s appreciation for India’s culture, the value he places on our partnership and his tremendous support for India are truly inspiring,” Gautam Adani added.

The world’s largest renewable energy project at Khavda in Kutch is built across 538 sq km and is five times the size of Paris and almost as large as Mumbai city.

AGEL has surpassed 10,000 megawatts (MW) of operational portfolio, delivering reliable, affordable, and clean power to the national grid that will power more than 5.8 million homes and help avoid about 21 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Meanwhile, with cargo volumes of 180 MMT (more than 16 per cent YoY growth) in FY24, the flagship Mundra port is well placed to cross the 200 MMT mark in FY25. Mundra Port, the flagship of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), has just created yet another record by welcoming the largest container ship ever to call at an Indian port.

New Delhi:

The docking of the largest container ship ever at an Indian port highlights Mundra’s unmatched capabilities and a testimony to the company’s nation-building efforts, Karan Adani, Managing Director, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), said on Sunday.

The company earlier announced that the docked vessel, MSC Anna, has a length of 399.98 metres and is among the largest container ships.

“Our crown jewel Mundra Port welcomed MSC Anna, the largest container ship ever to dock at an Indian port,” Karan Adani posted on X.

MSC Anna’s arrival draft is 16.3 metres, which can be accommodated only at Adani Ports, Mundra, as no other port in India is capable of berthing a deep-draft vessel.

In July 2023, Adani Ports, Mundra created a record by berthing MV MSC Hamburg, one of the longest container ships in the world, with an overall length of 399 metres and a capacity of 16,652 TEUs.

Mundra Port celebrated 25 years of path-breaking operations

New Delhi:

Commemorating a landmark journey, Mundra Port celebrated 25 years of path-breaking operations, highlighting its expansion and evolution as one of the largest ports globally. Since berthing its first ship, MT Alpha on 7 October, 1998, the port has consistently demonstrated a visionary approach, unwavering ambition and impeccable execution, positioning itself as one of the premier and technologically advanced ports on the global map.

Commenting on the occasion, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani said, “Mundra, for me, is much more than just a port. It is the beachhead of a horizon of possibilities for the entire Adani Group.”

“25 years ago, when we started the journey, we dreamt of a beacon that would represent India’s march forward. The heartbeat of this commitment resonates not just in Mundra but throughout the nation and echoes in the confidence of every stakeholder who had the faith to sail on this journey with us,” he said.

“As we mark our silver jubilee, Mundra stands as a testament to the wonders that can unfurl when foresight, tenacity and a united community converge. Along with our employees and partners, we did not merely construct a port; we sculpted an emblem of global excellence, transforming an entire region and crafting new blueprints. Our confidence has never been higher and Mundra will continue to trailblaze, setting benchmarks on the global canvas,” Mr Adani said.

Emerging as a crucial trade gateway, Mundra Port has grown into a multimodal hub that drives trade and fortifies economic progression. From its modest inception, it has ascended to prominence and has contributed over Rs 2.25 lakh crore to the state and national exchequer in the past 25 years, emphasising its central role in India’s economic framework. Also, it has generated employment exceeding 7.5 crore man-days since inception.

“Today, Mundra is a showcase of world-class infrastructure – and anyone who sees Mundra will agree that it is a very visible tribute to the vision and the determination of pioneering entrepreneurs like Gautam Adani, who refused to stop thinking big and thinking long-term,” CEO and Whole Time Director Karan Adani said in a statement.

“We see this multidimensional transformation of Mundra, in just 25 years, as the Adani Group’s humble contribution to nation-building. What was once barren is now India’s EXIM gateway and an extraordinary global hub for trade and commerce. I would say, very confidently, that we have succeeded in creating a powerful catalyst for India’s growth – and I also believe that our journey has just begun,” Karan Adani said.

From a handful of tonnes in 1998, Mundra went on to handle 100 MMT in 2014, the first in India to do so. Today, the port handles over 155 MMT (again the first in India), which constitutes nearly 11 per cent of India’s maritime cargo.

Mundra is also the EXIM gateway for container traffic. In fact, 33 per cent of India’s container traffic flows through the port across a dedicated freight corridor that offers the unique facility of double-stack containers from the northern hinterland to Mundra.

Mundra Port serves the vast northern hinterland with seamless multimodal connectivity. As the nation’s largest commercial port, spread over 35,000 acres, Mundra boasts of state-of-the-art facilities including the largest coal, natural gas, and auto terminals.

Its deep draft and all-weather capabilities ensure efficient cargo evacuation and minimal turnaround time. Its strategic advantages and superior facilities have made it the preferred choice for major global shipping lines.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), a part of the globally diversified Adani Group, has evolved from a port company to an Integrated Transport Utility providing an end-to-end solution from its port gate to customer gate.
