Police officials carry out a lathi charge after residents of the ‘Garib Nagar’ slum in Bandra East allegedly pelt stones at police during the second day of an anti-encroachment drive on railway land in Mumbai on May 20, 2026.

Three police personnel were injured after angry residents of a slum in Mumbai’s Bandra East area hurled stones at them as authorities razed an allegedly illegal mosque during an anti-encroachment drive on Wednesday (May 20, 2026), officials said.

At least ten persons were detained for stone-pelting, they said, adding that police resorted to lathi-charge to control the unruly mob, in which some local residents were also injured.

The Western Railway on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) launched a massive anti-encroachment drive in the Gareeb Nagar slum area, clearing several of the 500 illegal huts adjacent to the eastern side of Bandra railway station following the Bombay High Court’s directions.

The authorities plan to clear 5,200 square metres of encroached railway land over five days. Vineet Abhishek, chief Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Western Railway, said almost 60% of illegal structures have been removed so far.

On the second day of the anti-encroachment drive, the authorities started pulling down an alleged illegal three-storey mosque in the slum. Soon, a large number of people gathered at the site, creating tension, the police officials said. The angry residents claimed that authorities did not give them adequate time to remove belongings from houses before the demolition began. To disperse the mob, the police started lathi-charging, an official said, adding that several persons, including women, sustained injuries during the action.

Some people later started throwing stones at the police, in which three personnel were injured, the official said. Ten persons were detained and the police again lathi-charged the unruly protesters to bring the situation under control, he said.

Additional Commissioner of Police Abhinav Deshmukh said the anti-encroachment drive was being carried out under the jurisdiction of Nirmal Nagar police station as per the high court orders. “Some anti-social elements tried to obstruct the work by hurling stones at the demolition squad. The police used appropriate force to disperse them,” he said.

The process of registering an FIR is underway, Mr. Deshmukh said, adding that strict legal action will be taken against the miscreants. According to officials, more than 1,000 personnel were deployed at the site, including around 400 personnel of the city police besides those belonging to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP).

Local MLA and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Varun Sardesai accused the ruling BJP of setting a narrative that the Maharashtra government was acting against illegal Bangladeshi migrants living in the area. “The action was undertaken on a court order. Neither the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation nor the State government was involved in it. The action was taken by the Western Railway,” Mr. Sardesai said.

Mumbai:

Actor Raghu Ram has appeared before the Maharashtra Cyber Department amid a probe into podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia’s controversial remarks on a YouTube show hosted by comedian Samay Raina.

Mr Allahbadia, widely known by his online moniker “BeerBiceps”, sparked massive outrage this week with his remarks about parents and sex during an episode of the now-deleted show ‘India’s Got Latent’, which also featured content creators like Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh and Apoorva Mukhija, who goes by the name “The Rebel Kid” on Instagram.

“Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?” Mr Allahbadia had asked a contestant.

After the backlash, he offered an apology and blamed a lapse in judgement.

Mr Ram, who was on the judges panel in one of the episodes, allegedly told the cyber cell on Thursday that Mr Raina should have edited the abusive language used in the show, sources said.

He also confessed that he regretted using abusive language in the show.

Mr Ram also said that he went with the flow and used swear words, but didn’t intend to hurt anyone’s feelings, sources claimed.

Mr Ram was among at least 50 people who have been summoned to record their statements.

The Mumbai Police have so far questioned eight people, including Apoorva Makhija, Ashish Chanchalani, Mr Allahbadia’s manager and the video editor of ‘India’s Got Latent’, on a complaint filed by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader. The city police have so far not registered any case in this connection.

Mr Raina has also been summoned by Mumbai Police and Maharashtra’s Cyber Department, which is conducting an independent investigation. He had been told to appear within five days but has asked for more time, stating he is currently in the US.

Cops Find Ranveer Allahbadia’s Mumbai Flat Locked

Teams of Mumbai and Assam police on Friday visited Ranveer Allahbadia’s Mumbai residence but found the flat locked. A police officer told news agency PTI that Mumbai law enforcement had initiated an inquiry and went to the apartment, in the city’s Versova neighbourhood, to question him.

On Thursday, Mr Allahbadia had been asked to report to the police station in Mumbai’s Khar to record his statement. However, he later requested that this be done at his home.

His request, however, was denied and after he failed to appear, the cops issued a second summons and then landed up at his home.

The cops from Assam wanted to question the 31-year-old podcaster in a case filed by a city resident, who had accused him of promoting obscene content on an online platform available to all.

Besides Mr Allahbadia and Mr Raina, others named in the case in Assam are Mr Chanchlani, Mr Singh and Ms Makhija.

Mumbai:

The 31-year-old man who was detained in Chhattisgarh as a suspect in the Saif Ali Khan case earlier this month said the police action has cost him his job and a marriage proposal, brought immense disrepute to his family, and left him with an “unbearable dangerous feeling”.

In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Akash Kanojia, who was briefly detained and interrogated, said his photograph was widely circulated despite having no involvement in the crime. “Why was my photo made viral? I want justice,” he said, threatening to move court if his photograph was not brought down by all those who shared it across various online platforms.

He also sought to know if police would have acted in a similar way had a VIP or a millionaire’s son been a suspect in the case.

On January 18, Mr Kanojia was detained from Mumbai Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Kolkata Shalimar Jnaneswari Express at Chhattisgarh’s Durg station by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) after a tip off from Mumbai police, two days after Mr Khan was stabbed by an intruder at his residence in Bandra.

He was released a day later, with Mumbai Police officials saying he was just a suspect. Days later and after over 70 hours of an intense manhunt, a 30-year-old man, who was later identified as a Bangladeshi national, was arrested in connection with the attack.

Mr Kanojia, however, said the police action had severe repercussions and left him and his family traumatised.

He said he lost his job as a driver. He said his marriage was fixed but the prospective bride’s family called it off after he was detained in the case. He added that his relatives and friends are hesitant to meet or maintain ties with him and his family.

“Whatever happened to me should not happen to anyone else. I am a poor man, and that’s why I had to see such days. What if there was a VIP or a millionaire’s son in my place, what would they (police) have done? Such things happened to me today but they should not happen to anyone tomorrow. After such treatment, that dangerous feeling you get is unbearable,” he said.

“I was defamed so much. It is a question of someone’s life. I was not wrong. I had not committed any crime. Then why was my photo made viral? I am not capable of committing such crimes,” he added.

He requested all those who circulated his photograph across platforms to delete it. “Otherwise there is only one last stop – court. I’ll have to knock on the court’s door,” he said.

Mr Kanojia recalled the events that led to his detention. He said he was travelling on the Mumbai Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Kolkata Shalimar Jnaneshwari Express when he was cornered by the RPF men. “They showed me my photograph. I told him I am Akash Kanojia. They asked me to get off the train. When I asked them why, they said the Mumbai Police have asked them to locate me. Since I knew that the RPF was doing its duty, I agreed to go with them,” he said.

“After this, the RPF took me with them. They told me that they would not ask me anything or initiate any action against me. They asked if I was just running away? I asked them why would I run? I told them that if they think I have done something wrong, then they should call the Mumbai cops. As the cops came, I was interrogated. I told them I did not commit the crime,” he said.

Mr Kanojia said he asked the cops to take him to the actor to verify if he had carried out the attack. “I said that if he (Mr Khan) says that it was me who attacked him, then the police can blame me for all the crimes that took place in Mumbai that day. Why should I accept something that I have not done. After this, I was allowed to go home,” he said.

Mr Kanojia’s father, Kailash, earlier criticised the cops for “ruining my son’s life”.

“The police detained my son without verifying his identity. This mistake has ruined his life. Now, due to the mental trauma, Akash is unable to focus on work or communicate with his family. He has become withdrawn, doesn’t talk properly, and has lost all motivation,” he told PTI.

“People are saying there is no resemblance between my son and the actual accused. He lost his job and his marriage was called off. Who is responsible? The behaviour of the police has destroyed Akash’s future,” he added.

Speaking to reporters earlier, Mumbai police sub inspector Pradeep Fude said: “We can detain anyone for inquiry. We had been insisting he was just a suspect. There has been no mistake on our part. We had told the media that we would share authentic details but some went ahead and declared him an accused.”

On January 16, Mr Khan suffered grievous injuries, after he was stabbed six times reportedly by Islam, during a failed burglary attempt at the actor’s 12th floor residence in “Satguru Sharan” building in upscale Bandra.

Multiple teams of the police and the crime branch worked on several inputs and analysed footage from several CCTV cameras to track down the actor’s attacker.

Days later on January 19, Sariful Islam, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested from near Hiranandani Estate in Kasarvadavali in Thane, about 35 kilometres from Mr Khan’s house in Bandra. He was subsequently remanded in police custody.

Islam’s father, however, said his son is being framed for reasons unknown to him.

Mumbai:

Mumbai Police has collected blood samples of actor Saif Ali Khan and the clothes he was wearing on January 16 in connection with the case related to the knife attack on him. Besides, the clothes the accused, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, was wearing on the day of the crime were also seized.

The accused’s clothes have blood spots which will be matched with the actor’s blood samples, police sources said.

Blood samples and clothes of the actor and the accused have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to find out whether the blood on the accused’s clothes was that of the actor.

On Friday, Saif Ali Khan recorded his statement with the Mumbai Police in which he said that the accused demanded Rs 1 crore and attacked the nanny, and when he tried to stop him, Shehzad escaped after stabbing him multiple times.

The actor suffered stab injuries after the intruder entered his home for an apparent burglary through a duct. A preliminary investigation had established that the accused broke into the apartment with the motive of robbery.

Shehzad, who had illegally entered India from Bangladesh last year, was arrested from Thane near Mumbai on January 19.

Fingerprints collected from Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra flat matched those of Shehzad’s, the police said.

However, Shehzad’s father, Md Ruhul Amin Fakir, told IANS that the person captured in the CCTV footage from Saif Ali Khan’s home does not resemble his son.

The incident has drawn reactions from political bigwigs and the Bollywood industry. While those in Bollywood wished the actor a quick recovery and expressed concern over the security situation, Opposition leaders used it to attack the Mahayuti government.

Adding fuel to the controversy, Maharashtra Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane has raised serious doubts over the attack on Saif Ali Khan, asking if he was stabbed with a knife or was it just an act.

Mumbai:

Mumbai police on Tuesday recreated the crime scene with the accused arrested for the knife attack on Saif Ali Khan at the actor’s residence in upscale Bandra, an official said.

A team of 20 officials reached the Satguru Sharan building in four police vans around 5.30 am and were on the premises for an hour, the official said.

He said the police team entered the building through the front gate with the accused, Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir. Later, they also took him to the Bandra railway station, from where he had taken a train to Dadar, and to a place outside a garden where he had slept after the attack.

Mr Khan (54) was stabbed repeatedly by the intruder inside his 12-floor apartment in the building on January 16, necessitating surgery. The police on Sunday arrested Fakir, a Bangladeshi national who was staying in India illegally after changing his name to Vijay Das, from neighbouring Thane city.

The official said after recreating the crime scene and going to places the accused had visited while on the run, Fakir was brought back to Bandra police station, where officials will interrogate him.

The metropolitan magistrate’s court in Bandra has remanded the accused in five-day police custody.

Mumbai:

The man who stabbed Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his Mumbai residence early Thursday morning had also threatened his domestic staff before the alleged attack. In a police statement, Mr Khan’s domestic staff said the knife-wielding attacker – who is on the run and was seen near the Bandra railway station hours after the incident – also demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore.

Saif Ali Khan was stabbed six times, including in his neck, at his apartment in the posh Bandra West neighbourhood around 2:30 am. He is said to be out of danger following an emergency surgery at the Lilavati Hospital where he was reportedly rushed by one of his sons – Ibrahim Ali Khan – in an auto-rickshaw after his car was delayed.

Eliyama Philip – a nurse caring for Mr Khan’s four-year-old son Jehangir (also known as Jeh) – and another staffer were also injured in the attack.

Intruder Enters Saif Ali Khan’s House

Saif Ali Khan and his family members – his wife and fellow actor Kareena Kapoor, and their two sons, Jeh and eight-year-old Taimur – were home in the 12-floor apartment along with their five house helps when the attacker entered the house.

In a statement to the police, Ms Philip, who claimed she has been with the Khan household for four years, said she was the first to spot the intruder – who was between 35-40 years old – at Mr Khan’s apartment on the 11th floor.

She said she had been woken by noises in the house around 2 am – three hours after Jehangir had been put to bed. She told the police the attacker first entered Jeh’s room.

Ms Philip said she saw the bathroom door ajar and the light on and first assumed that Ms Kapoor Khan was checking in on her younger son.

“… then I went back to sleep but, again, I realised something was wrong. So I woke up again and saw a man come out of the bathroom and go into the boy’s room.”

“I quickly got up and went to Jeh’s room. The attacker then put his finger near his mouth and said “Don’t make any noise, nobody will go out” in Hindi,” Ms Philip said.

When I rushed to pick up Jeh, the man – who was armed with a wooden stick and a long Hexa blade – ran towards me and tried attacking me, she said.

“I tried to block the attack by putting my hand forward, but the blade hit me near the wrists of both my hands and on the middle finger of my left hand,” she said.

“At that time, I asked him, “What do you want?”. Then he said, “I want money.” I asked, “How much do you want?” Then he said in English, “One crore”,” 56-year-old Philip recalled in her police statement.

Saif Ali Khan’s Encounter With Intruder

Hearing Ms Philip’s scream, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan rushed out of their room. When Mr Khan asked him “what do you want?”, he attacked him with a wooden object and the hexa blade, Ms Philip said in her police statement.

“Saif Sir somehow managed to get away from him and we all ran out of the room and pulled the door of the room,” she said, adding that everyone then went to the upper floor of their home.

The intruder later managed to escape, she said.

According to police sources, there was no sign of forced entry, nor was anyone captured on CCTV entering the premises in the two hours before the attack.

According to police sources, the intruder – who entered the actor’s home to commit burglary – had scaled the wall of an adjacent compound to enter the premises. Officials said the intruder was familiar with the layout of the building and took the stairs on the rear side of the building to reach the floor where the actor lives.

He then entered Mr Khan’s home through the fire escape.

Mumbai Police has formed 20 teams to arrest the accused, who was captured on CCTV cameras on the sixth floor while fleeing.

Actor Saif Ali Khan, who underwent surgeries on Thursday after an attacker stabbed him at his Mumbai home, is out of danger and recovering well, doctors at the Lilavati Hospital said. The police have formed 20 teams to arrest the accused.

Here are the latest updates on attack on Saif Ali Khan:

  1. Saif Ali Khan sustained serious injuries after he was stabbed six times by an intruder at his residence in Mumbai’s Bandra area in the early hours of Thursday. The incident took place when the accused allegedly entered Mr Khan’s house on the 11th floor of the Satguru Sharan building for a burglary.
  2. Mr Khan’s spinal fluid leaked out after shards of the attacker’s knife lodged into his spine. According to the doctors at the Lilavati Hospital – where the actor is undergoing treatment – they repaired the spinal injury and performed plastic surgeries on the actor’s hand and neck.
  3. Officials said the attacker’s breaking in at Mr Khan’s house lasted for nearly 30 minutes. He was first spotted in Mr Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s younger son Jeh’s room.
  4. Jeh’s nanny Eliyama Philip, who was in the same room, was the first to spot the intruder. “I saw the bathroom door ajar and the light on…first I assumed Kareena Kapoor was checking in on her son. I went back to sleep but soon realised something was wrong. I got up again to check when I saw a man come out of the bathroom and go into Jeh and Taimur’s room,” the nanny narrated. At this point, she confronted the attacker, following which he demanded Rs 1 crore.
  5. The 56-year-old nanny tried to fight the intruder off but ended up suffering injuries to her wrists and hands. The second nanny who was in the same room, rushed to Mr Khan’s room to wake him up. When Mr Khan tried to confront the intruder, he was attacked multiple times. The attacker immediately ran from the house and was later spotted near Bandra railway station. He likely took the first local train in the morning, officials said.
  6. According to the initial investigation, the attacker, who is currently on the run, possibly sneaked inside Mr Khan’s house at some point earlier in the night. Officials suspect that the accused was familiar with the layout of the building and used the shaft and stairs to reach the 11th floor.
  7. The police have registered a case under sections of robbery, trespassing, and “grievous hurt caused while committing lurking house-trespass”. 20 teams have been formed to arrest the accused and the police are questioning two people who were doing flooring work on the terrace of the actor’s house, officials said. The police have also recovered a 2.5-inch portion of a knife that was taken out from Mr Khan’s spine.
  8. Police said that the suspect was last seen running away on the sixth floor of the building and was not captured in the lobby’s CCTV cameras while entering or exiting. After the sixth floor, the suspect was nowhere to be seen, nor was he caught exiting through the main entrance.
  9. Hours after the incident, Kareena Kapoor Khan, in a post on Instagram, said that the constant scrutiny during an “incredibly challenging day” is overwhelming. “As we navigate this difficult time, I respectfully and humbly request that the media and paparazzi refrain from the relentless speculation and coverage. While we appreciate the concern and support, the constant scrutiny and attention are not only overwhelming but also pose a significant risk to our safety. I kindly request that you respect our boundaries and give us the space we need to heal and cope as a family,” she said.
  10. The incident has triggered a political squabble, with the BJP-led state government under fire from the opposition and members of the film fraternity. Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi questioned, “If celebrities are not safe, who in Mumbai is?” Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also targeted the BJP on the issue. However, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said what happened was “unfortunate, but it would not be correct to say that Mumbai is unsafe”.
