1. Hardik Pandya not part of leadership group

Whilst Gambhir’s faith in Suryakumar Yadav is not a surprise, what is alarming is the complete omission of Hardik Pandya from any sort of captaincy role. Instead, it is India’s captain in the Zimbabwe tour, Shubman Gill, who has been named vice-captain in both the ODIs and T20Is.

One can only speculate the real reason behind Hardik’s downfall on the captaincy pecking order. Is it Hardik’s disastrous Mumbai Indians stint? Or is it the fact that Hardik’s injury-prone nature means he may not always be a part of the squad? It could also be that Gambhir is firmly looking towards the future, aiming to prepare Gill as India’s next captain in all formats from now itself.

2. Shubman Gill’s Big Promotion

Gambhir seems to have his eyes set firmly on the 2027 World Cup, and it seems like Shubman Gill is his vote as the nation’s future captain in all formats. Gill has been named as the vice-captain in both the T20I and the ODI squads, ahead of Hardik Pandya no less. With Rohit being 37 and Suryakumar 33, Gambhir is looking to mould a future captain right from the start.

3. Abhishek Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav, Ruturaj Gaikwad left out of T20I squad

Despite Kuldeep’s starring role in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup victory – where he picked up 10 wickets in just five games – he has been left out of the T20I squad. The reason behind this could be to manage Kuldeep’s workload, as he still continues to feature in the ODI squad.

Gambhir has also worked in close quarters with Ravi Bishnoi in the past at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and may trust him as India’s lead spinner in T20Is.

Gaikwad has also been left out, despite a fine T20I series against Zimbabwe. He has been left out from both squads, with the likes of Riyan Parag favoured over him.

Abhishek Sharma scored a ton against Zimbabwe but he has also been dropped from the Sri Lanka tour, while off-colour Riyan Parag has been picked for both T20Is and ODIs.

4. Gambhir backs his KKR boys

KKR stars Shreyas Iyer, Harshit Rana (ODIs) and Rinku Singh (T20Is) are all part of Gambhir’s first India squad. Much like Suryakumar, Gambhir’s faith in Shreyas Iyer also does not come as a surprise, after he guided KKR to a third IPL title in 2024. Harshit Rana had an excellent campaign, and could be utilised as a handy lower-order batsman as well in the ODI format.

Here the India squads for Sri Lanka tour –

T20I Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohd. Siraj.

ODI Squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, Harshit Rana.

India cricket star Suryakumar Yadav cackled up fans on social media as he revealed that the “most important catch” of his life was not the one he took to dismiss David Miller in the 2024 T20 World Cup final. Instead, it was marrying his wife Devisha Shetty. The couple shared pictures together of cutting a giant cake as they celebrated the eighth anniversary of their wedding. Suryakumar Yadav – fondly known as SKY – took to social media to make a pun about the situation.

“Yesterday marked 8 days since THAT catch but my most important catch was actually 8 years ago!” captioned SKY on Instagram.

“8 years ago, infinite years to go,” he also added.

The post gained more than 700,000 likes in just six hours of being posted on Instagram, with many fans lapping up the heartwarming caption and wishing the couple.

SKY (33) married Devisha (30) on July 7, 2016. They had first met in 2010.

Suryakumar Yadav’s role in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win

SKY was the world’s no. 1 batter for nearly two years until recently, and was a key cog as India lifted the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA. After notching up two half-centuries earlier in the tournament, SKY produced the catch of a lifetime in the final.

With South Africa needing 16 off the final over, Suryakumar Yadav took an astonishing catch at long-off to dismiss the dangerous David Miller. SKY first had to keep the ball in play, and then came back from outside the boundary rope to claim a stunning catch.

SKY’s catch and a magnificent death bowling effort by Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya led to India winning the final by seven runs, thereby clinching a second T20 World Cup title.

SKY has presently been rested for India’s five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe.

Rohit Sharma Having The Freedom To Walk Out And Bat Will Be Beneficial For Mumbai Indians: Aaron Finch https://artifex.news/rohit-having-the-freedom-to-walk-out-and-bat-will-be-beneficial-for-mi-finch-5251319/ Sat, 16 Mar 2024 15:08:55 +0000 https://artifex.news/rohit-having-the-freedom-to-walk-out-and-bat-will-be-beneficial-for-mi-finch-5251319/ Read More “Rohit Sharma Having The Freedom To Walk Out And Bat Will Be Beneficial For Mumbai Indians: Aaron Finch” »

With the burden of captaincy off his shoulders, Rohit Sharma will be able to play with a lot of freedom which will help five-time champions Mumbai Indians, reckoned former Australia T20 skipper Aaron Finch. Hardik Pandya will lead MI this season, replacing Rohit who has led the side to five IPL titles. “I think for Rohit, the challenge would be just walking out and opening the batting as he’s done so many times for India and Mumbai over the years. This might be a wipe off for his shoulders,” Finch said during Star Sports’ Show Game Plan.

“When you are captaining a team constantly, everywhere you go you are captain of the team. You can get engrossed a lot in that, so now having the freedom to walk out and bat will be beneficial for him personally and Mumbai Indians.”

Two-time former champions Kolkata Knight Riders had finished seventh in the last edition and Finch hoped they will be able to put up a good show this time after the addition of Australia pacer Mitchell Starc.

“I think KKR will improve on their last year (performance), they weren’t at their best last year. But Shreyas (Iyer’s) injury cloud would be interesting to see how much of an impact he has throughout the tournament,” said Finch, who featured for as many as eight IPL teams, including the Kolkata Knight Riders.

“When you add Mitchell Starc to any T20 team you are going to be better, his ability with the new ball to swing it upfront will provide very valuable wickets… and in the power play, which is so important for the game. And, his death bowling is obviously exceptional as well.” Former India allrounder Irfan Pathan felt Sunrisers Hyderabad could give the captaincy reins to Pat Cummins this season following his exploits for Australia.

Cummins led Australia to the 50-over World Cup title last November and also earned the World Test Championships crown for his country.

“Sunrisers Hyderabad taking punt on Pat Cummins’ momentum which is especially good for him from last two seasons, be it the ICC 50-overs World Cup and WTC final and the way he is performing at the international level,” he said.

“My doubt is only that his IPL numbers are not that great, eight-and-half economy in the IPL which is quite high for a premier quality fast bowler.

“Hopefully that can change in one season, so Sunrisers Hyderabad will be hoping he will able to come and lead the side to victory, which they haven’t got for some time now. But I certainly think that T20 cricket is a different form of game compared to 50 overs and Test cricket.”

Australia’s Tim David scored 31 not out off 10 balls against New Zeland in first T20I.© X (formerly Twitter)

Tim David and Mitchell Marsh starred in Australia’s nail-biting six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20I in Wellington on Wednesday. Chasing a target of 216, Australia needed 12 runs off the final three balls. David smashed New Zealand pacer Tim Southee for a six to fine leg. On the next delivery, the right-handed batter managed to steal a couple. Australia needed 4 runs to win off the final ball and David took them home by whipping the ball between the deep mid-wicket and long-on fielders for a boundary.

Watch the thrilling finish from 15:23 –

Having been set 216 to win, Australia skipper Marsh hammered 72 off 44 balls before batting partner David (31 not out off 10) sealed a thrilling last-gasp victory.

The three-match series is the last for both teams before the T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies in June.

Rachin Ravindra had earlier put New Zealand in the driving seat by hitting 68 runs off 35 balls to claim his first half-century in the format as the hosts finished on 215 for 3.

Marsh finished with best bowling figures of 1 for 21 before leading the charge with the bat, hitting seven sixes and two fours in his unbeaten knock.

The captain steadied his side after they lost openers Travis Head and David Warner early on.

Marsh built a partnership of 42 for the third wicket with Glenn Maxwell, who was clean-bowled by Lockie Ferguson on 25 to leave Australia 111-3 after 10 overs.

New Zealand’s fielding let them down in the 12th over as Southee missed a catch off Josh Inglis, then Phillips dropped Marsh next ball on the boundary.

Inglis was dismissed with three overs left and Australia on 172-4 when he skied his shot to Ravindra at deep backward square leg. Inglis made 20.

The game went to the wire after New Zealand seamer Adam Milne was smashed for 19 runs in the penultimate over.

Australia needed 15 from the last six balls, but David held his nerve by smashing a six before sending the final ball of the night to the boundary past a diving Phillips.
