A two-year-old girl died and her parents were seriously injured after their scooter skidded at a spot where road repair work was underway and they were hit by a tempo, city police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on Dr Ambedkar Road in Parel area around 10.30 am, said an official.

Manoj Shantaram Pawar (32), a resident of Ghatkopar, his wife Vidya (29) and daughter Shravi (2) were heading for the Jijamata Udyan in Byculla on scooter to enjoy the New Year holiday.

The two-wheeler skidded at a spot where repair work was going on. The three fell down on the road and were hit by a tempo coming from behind, said an official.

All three sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the civic-run KEM hospital where Shravi was declared dead on arrival, he said.

Mumbai:

A four-year-old boy has been killed after a speeding car, driven by a 19-year-old man, hit him in Mumbai, police said today. The accident took place near the Ambedkar College in the Wadala area.

Police said the family of the victim, identified as Ayush Laxman Kinvade, lives on the footpath and his father is a worker.

Sandeep Gole, who was driving the Hyundai Creta, is a resident of Vile Parle. Further investigation is underway.

The incident comes days after a driver in Mumbai lost control of the electric bus operated by the civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking and rammed into pedestrians and vehicles, killing seven people and injuring 42 others.

More than 20 vehicles were also damaged in the crash, which took place in Kurla on December 9 and was captured on CCTV.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways last week said Maharashtra was among the states that have witnessed the highest number of road accidents in the last five years.

The report, based on data received from various states and Union Territories, revealed that more than 7 lakh people have died across India in road accidents in the 2018-2022 period.

Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of road accident deaths (1,08,882), followed by Tamil Nadu (84,316) and Maharashtra (66,370).

Mumbai:

A 55-year-old man hailing from Kerala died after being run over by a bus operated by BEST in south Mumbai on Wednesday evening, officials said, in second fatal accident involving a vehicle of the Mumbai civic transport body in three days.

The victim was first hit by a speeding motorcycle and then run over by the bus near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), they said.

The bus driver, Dnyandeo Jagdale, was taken into custody for inquiry, they said.

The accident occurred two days after the horrific bus tragedy in the Kurla area of the metropolis in which an out of control electric bus of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking fatally knocked down seven persons and injured 42 others on Monday night.

“Around 4.30 pm on Wednesday, a motorbiker hit a man in front of Hotel Shivala near the CSMT, due to which he fell on the road. Just then, a speeding BEST bus going towards the Electric House in south Mumbai from Anushakti Nagar ran over him,” a police official said.

The pedestrian came under the rear wheel of the BEST bus and died on the spot, he said.

The person who died was identified by the police as Hasenar Anduhi, a resident of Badaiyabuka Bela in Kasaragod district of Kerala.

Driver Jagdale was taken into custody for inquiry by officials of the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg police station, he said, adding a case was being registered in this connection.

The police have launched a search for the motorcyclist, who hit the pedestrian.

A senior BEST official said the bus belongs to a wet lease private operator, but its driver Jagdale is an employee of the civic undertaking.

In the Kurla crash, the police have arrested Sanjay More (54), who was at the wheel of the ill-fated bus.

Three people were killed after a BEST bus rammed some cars in Mumbai

Mumbai:

Three people were killed and 17 were injured after a state-run bus rammed some vehicles on a busy road in Mumbai’s Kurla (West) on Monday.

The brakes of the BEST bus may have failed, a municipal corporation official told news agency PTI.

The injured people have been admitted to Sion and Kurla Bhabha Hospitals.

The accident happened at 9.50 pm. The BEST bus route number 332 was going from Kurla station to Andheri.

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking, or BEST, provides transport service to the entire city and also extends its operations outside city limits into neighbouring urban areas.

The official said the bus driver lost control and rammed some pedestrians and vehicles. It then crashed into the gates of a residential complex, the official said.
