The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 final between Islamabad United and Multan Sultans was hit by a massive controversy as Imad Wasim was pictured smoking inside the dressing room at the National Stadium in Karachi. Wasim, who took a five-wicket haul for Islamabad United, was caught on camera smoking during the Multan Sultans innings and the video led to a lot of criticism from fans on social media. The controversy did not stop there as after Islamabad United clinched the trophy with a narrow win, Imad celebrated with a smoking gesture – leading to more conversations online.

Resilient Islamabad United snatched a last-ball thriller to beat Multan Sultans by two wickets in the final in Karachi on Monday, winning the Pakistan Super League title for a third time.

Young Hunain Shah pushed the final delivery of the last over for a boundary towards backward point as United overhauled a modest 160-run target at the National Stadium.

United needed eight runs off the 20th over bowled by Mohammad Ali and Hunain’s elder brother Naseem Shah hit a boundary off the second delivery but with a single needed off the last two deliveries he fell caught behind.

However, Hunain kept his cool to give Sultans defeat in their third successive finals.

Earlier, Sultans managed 159-9 in their 20 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat.

They were guided by a 40-ball 57 by Usman Khan and 26 by skipper Mohammad Rizwan.

Khan hit seven boundaries and a six but once he fell in the 16th over, Sultans lost five wickets for just 13 runs, slumping to 127-9. Left-arm spinner Imad Wasim was the chief destroyer with 5-23 while Naseem grabbed 3-32.

It was Iftikhar Ahmed who revived the innings with a whirlwind 20-ball 32 not out with three sixes and as many boundaries, scoring 31 in the last two overs. United were also derailed from 121-4 to 129-7 but Wasim guided late order batters with a calm 17-ball 19 to help them cross the finish line.

United, Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators qualified for the play-offs while Karachi Kings and defending champions Lahore Qalandars were knocked out in the first round of the ninth edition of the League.

The ninth season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is about to reach its conclusion with two games left to play, including the summit clash. The Mohammad Rizwan-led Multan Sultans have booked their place in Monday’s final after beating Babar Azam‘s Peshawar Zalmi in the Qualifier. However, fans have raised concerns over the subdued atmosphere in Karachi for the PSL playoffs. On Friday, Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators faced off in Eliminator 1 in front of an almost empty National Cricket Stadium.

While the tournament saw almost packed scenes during the games in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan, there has been little to no attendance throughout the Karachi leg.

In fact, the subdued atmosphere in Karchi has become even more noticeable with the onset of Ramzan. According to ESPNcricinfo, the PSL officials have decided against relocating the remaining games.

Former Paksitan captain Wasim Akram said he was “embarrassed” to see no fans in Karachi for the playoffs.

“It was embarrassing to see no crowd in Karachi. There was no crowd, literally no crowd for last night’s match,” Akram said on A Sports.

Here’s how Internet reacted:

For the unversed, this will be the first time a PSL final will be played on a Monday. All the previous eight editions saw the conclusion of the tournament on the weekend.

However, the PSL 2024 has a rest day on Sunday.

On Friday, Islamabad United defeated Quetta Gladiators in Eliminator 1. They will now take on Peshawar Zalmin in Eliminator 2 for a place in the final.

Schedule of remaining PSL matches

March 16, 2024, Eliminator 2 (Islamabad United v Peshawar Zalmi), National Bank Stadium

March 18, 2024, Final, National Bank Stadium

England batter Jason Roy and Pakistan all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed were involved in an ugly spat during a Pakistan Super League (PSL) match between Quetta Gladiators and Multan Sultans on Tuesday. The incident took place during the second ball of the third over of Gladiators’ run-chase after David Willey trapped Roy LBW. As Roy walked towards his opening partner Saud Shakeel to discuss a possible review, he got tangled in an altercation with Iftikhar Ahmed.

Before the matter could escalate, both players were separated by Shakeel and Iftikhar’s teammates. Roy was fuming over the incident as he threw his bat and helmet in anger after reaching the dugout.

Reacting to the ugly war of words between Roy and Iftikhar, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram slammed the English batter for his “useless anger”.

Akram said that Roy must not forget that he is playing in Pakistan, adding that the England opener has a knack of getting himself into such fights on a regular basis.

“Just gets angry unnecessarily. Jason Roy must know he is in Pakistan. He has to respect our players and our culture. Why was he angry after getting out? It was his own mistake, and his anger was useless. He does this regularly,” Akram said on A Sports.

Meanwhile, Roy recently pulled himself out of the upcoming season of the T20 tournament due to “personal reasons”.

Roy had joined KKR ahead of last season after Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan had confirmed his unavailability for the season.

As his replacement, KKR have roped in another Englishman in Phil Salt, who was released by Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.

“Kolkata Knight Riders have named Phil Salt as a replacement for Jason Roy after the latter pulled out of the upcoming IPL 2024 owing to personal reasons. Having remained unsold in the auction after representing the Delhi Capitals last year, this will be Salt’s second season in the IPL.”

KKR bagged Salt for his reserve price of Rs 1.5 crore.

“Bought at his reserve price of INR 1.5 crore, the aggressive wicket-keeper batter from England scored two consecutive T20I centuries against the West Indies in December last year. His 48-ball century in the 4th T20I at Trinidad is also the joint-fastest for England,” it added.

Shaheen Afridi To Be Axed As Pakistan’s T20I Captain After Just Five Games? Star Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi has come under scrutiny amid Lahore Qalandars poor show in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) campaign. After leading the franchise to back-to-back titles in the last two campaigns, Shaheen has not been able to inspire Lahore Qalandars this season. The franchise’s performance has been subpar this season, winning only one match and finishing at the bottom of the points table. According to Cricket Pakistan, Shaheen is all set to lose his place as captain of Pakistan’s T20 team.

According to the report, Shaheen is too young to carry the responsibility for now.

“PCB’s new chairman Mohsin Naqvi has been receiving suggestions for a change in captaincy. Some believe that 23-year-old Shaheen is too young for this responsibility and needs more maturity,” the report claimed.

Pakistan are set to take on New Zealand in a T20 series next month, and the call on Shaheen’s future as captain will be taken by Naqvi before it, keeping the upcoming T20 World Cup in mind.

“On the other hand, some board members believe that a decision to change leadership close to the World Cup might not be wise as it could negatively impact the team’s performance. The final decision will be made by the chairman,” the report added.

It is also worth mentioning that wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan could be appointed as the new captain, with former skipper Babar Azam‘s name also in discussion.

“In case of a change, there is a higher possibility that Muhammad Rizwan will be appointed for the role. However, Babar Azam will be in contention too,” the report further suggested.

For the unversed, Shaheen took charge as Pakistan’s T20 captain after Babar stepped down from his role after the ODI World Cup in India last year.

Babar had relinquished his role after Pakistan failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.

Shaheen had led Pakistan in a five-match series in New Zealand earlier this year. However, the visitors lost the series 1-4, winning the final game of the series.

On the other hand, both Rizwan and Babar will look to guide their respective franchises to the PSL title.

Rizwan’s Multan Sultans ended the group phase at the top spot, having won seven of their 10 matches.

Peshawar Zalmi also qualified for the playoffs on Monday, beating Karachi Kings in a crunch game, with Babar scoring a fifty.

Babar is the leading scorer in the tournament so far with 498 runs in nine matches.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday fined Islamabad United pacer Naseem Shah 10 per cent of his match fee after he breached Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) code of conduct during a match against Multan Sultans at the Pindi Cricket Stadium. Naseem who features for Islamabad United on Sunday kicked the stumps after the final ball of Multan Sultans’ innings.

PCB released a statement to confirm that Naseem was charged with violating Article 2.2 which deals with abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings. The charge on Naesem was imposed by on-field umpires Ruchira Palliyaguruge and Muhammad Asif.

“Islamabad United’s Naseem Shah has been fined 10 per cent of match fee for a level 1 breach of the HBL PSL’s Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel during his side’s HBL PSL 9 fixture against Multan Sultans at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi on Sunday,” PCB said in a statement.

The statement further confirmed that there was no need for a formal hearing as Naseem pleaded guilty to the charge and accepted the sanctions which were proposed by match referee Roshan Mahanama.

Along with this Multan Sultans were fined for maintaining a slow over rate. During the match, the Sultans were ruled to be one over short of their target by match referee Roshan Mahanama. As a result, each player in the team was fined 10 per cent of the match fees.

“As such, and in accordance with Article 2.22 of the HBL PSL Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, each player was fined 10 per cent of his match fee,” PCB said in a statement.

Coming to the match, after Islamabad won the toss and opted to field, Multans managed to put up a mammoth score of 228/4 on the board. Usman Khan struck an unbeaten 100 while Johnson Charles played a brisk knock of 42(18) to propel Multans to a massive score.

In reply, Colin Munro struck a quick-fire knock of 84 off 40 deliveries. Skipper Shadab Khan supported Munro in his onslaught and Imad Wasim added the finishing touches with 30 in just 13 deliveries. Their combined efforts helped Islamabad clinch a three-wicket victory.

Sikandar Raza fined

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) fined Lahore Qalandars all-rounder Sikandar Raza for showing dissent at the umpire’s decision during their clash against Quetta Gladiators. Raza has been fined 10 per cent of his match fee for a Level 1 breach of PSL’s code of conduct for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.

During the game, Raza on three different occasions raised his arms, shook his head and gestured that the delivery should have been called a wide ball.

His actions lead to a violation of article 2.8, which deals with a player showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during a PSL game.

PCB released a statement to announce the fine imposed on Raza which read, “Lahore Qalandars’ Sikandar Raza has been fined 10 per cent of his match fee for a Level 1 breach of HBL PSL’s code of conduct for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.”

On-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Rashid Riaz leveled the charge against Sikandar Raza while match referee Ali Naqvi imposed the fine.

Coming to the match, Qalandars won the toss and opted to bat. Abdullah Shafique‘s 59* and skipper Shaheen Afridi‘s heroics with the bat which saw him score 55 off 34 deliveries powered Qalandars to 166/4.

In reply, Saud Shakeel‘s 88* singlehandedly propelled his team to chase down the target comfortably. He got some support from Khawaja Nafay but overall it was a single-man show which saw Gladiators emerge triumphant with a six-wicket win.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) began on February 17. Several high-profile international cricketers have pulled out of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) due to the overlapping of dates with other franchise-based tournaments and many cricket boards denying permission to their players to compete in domestic T20 competitions. All the six franchises have been hit hard with several players opting for the Bangladesh Premier League, ILT20 and SA20 leagues.

PSL side Multan Sultans have lost several players they had initially signed up for the upcoming season, with England pace bowler Reece Topley being the latest to pull out due to an injury.

In the absence of international stars, a lot of the attention in on the Pakistan stars. Former Pakistan cricket team captain Shoaib Malik is playing for Karachi Kings in the PSL and recently in a match against Multan Sultans, he top-scored for his team with a 35-ball 53. Despite his half-century, Karachi Kings lost the match by 55 runs. In attendance in the match was Shoaib Malik’s wife Sana Javed. The two recently got married. Their marriage news was widely shared on social media as Shoaib Malik had split with Indian tennis Icon Sania Mirza.

Talking about the tournament, a PSL franchise owner has asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to revisit the tournament window, as it is not possible to get big players when three leagues are happening on after the other.

“The SA20 ended recently and the ILT20 concludes on the day the PSL begins, so it is getting difficult to sign big players now,” he said on condition of anonymity.

He also pointed out that January-February is a busy season for international cricket series. Sri Lanka are playing a series against Afghanistan, South Africa are in the middle of a two-Test series against New Zealand while West Indies are playing a series against Australia.

“There is an acute need to change the PSL window, else it will lose its charm if we don’t get big overseas names,” he added.
