Shai Hope completes the catch of Sanju Samson during IPL 2024© X (formerly Twitter)

There has been a major controversy surrounding Shai Hope‘s catch to dismiss Sanju Samson during the IPL 2024 match on Tuesday. Hope was dangerously close to the boundary line when he completed the catch at long-in and the third umpire ruled in DC’s favour. However, the decision left Samson upset who ended up having an argument with the on-field umpires. Replays showed that there was a chance that Hope could have touched the boundary line while taking the catch and the whole incident split opinions among fans and experts. Official broadcasters Jio Cinema provided a zoomed in picture of the catch and it has provided a new angle to the conversation as it shows that Hope did not touch the boundary line.

DC kept their IPL 2024 playoff dreams alive with a crucial victory over RR.

Samson was fined 30 per cent for “breaching the IPL Code of Conduct” following his argument with the umpires. “Sanju Samson, captain, of Rajasthan Royals has been fined 30 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024,” an IPL statement said.

“Samson committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the statement further read.

RR Director Of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara also opened up about the topic.

“Irrespective of that dismissal, we still should have probably seen that game home,” Sangakkara said at the post-match press conference.

“Losses happen. We had a great run at the start of the season. We bowled brilliantly in this game, especially Ashwin but once you make too many casual mistakes, it becomes very hard. At the end of the day it’s about execution,” he told reporters.

Delhi Capitals kept their IPL 2024 playoff dreams alive with a crucial victory over Rajasthan Royals but the win was not without a bit of controversy. Sanju Samson looked in brilliant form but he was dismissed for 86 and Shai Hope‘s catch to end his innings has sparked a massive debate among both fans and experts. Replays suggested that Hope was quite close to the boundary line when the catch was completed but the third umpire decided to rule in DC’s favour. It result in an argument between the on-field umpires and Samson with DC owner Parth Jindal’s reaction to the incident also going viral.

Following the catch, Jindal meet Samson and in a video posted by Delhi Capitals on their social media accounts, both of them can be seen having a conversation.

Parth Jindal himself reacted to the video and also explained his passionate reaction.

DC rode half-centuries from Abishek Porel and Jake Fraser-McGurk to post a total above 200 and a disciplined bowling attack made sure that RR fell well short of the target.

“I think we had it in our hands, it was like 11-12 runs per over, it was achievable, but these things happen in IPL. Yes, we are doing both the things fine, we will like to stick to what the conditions demand, 220 was 10 runs extra to chase, if we had conceded a couple of less boundaries, we would have made it through.”

“The DC opener (Fraser McGurk) came out and did what he has done through the tournament, we still came back well. We have lost three games but all those games have been really tight, we have been playing remarkably well, we have to do some fine-tuning and make a comeback, we need to keep the momentum going.”

“Yes and No actually, you have to give credit to someone like Stubbs who batted well against Sandeep, who has been bowling very well in the last 10-11 games, he scored 2-3 sixes extra against my best bowlers who are Yuzi Chahal and Sandeep Sharma. We have lost the game, we have to find out where we lost the game and we need to keep moving,” Samson said after the match.

Sanju Samson reacts after his dismissal against Delhi Capitals© BCCI

Delhi Capitals assistant coach Pravin Amre believes that umpire’s decision should be respected when it comes to the controversy over Sanju Samson‘s dismissal during the IPL 2024 match against Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday. Samson, who was playing on 86, played a lofted shot straight down the ground off the bowling of Mukesh Kumar but Shai Hope ended up completing the catch at long-on. However, he was extremely close to the boundary line and replays showed that there was a chance that he touched the boundary line before the catch was completed. The third umpire ruled in DC’s favour resulting in Samson getting involved in a heated argument with the on-field umpires regarding the matter.

There has been a lot of conversations surrounding the matter but Amre believes that it was a close call and considering the technology available, the umpires’s decision is the final decision.

“In IPL some moments are very crucial, and it was a deciding moment in the game. Sanju was batting so well. We have to give credit to the way Hope judged that catch. Umpires are there, and there is so much technology. We also thought from the dugout that he has (touched the boundary) but it (happens) in the game, and the umpire’s decision is the final decision. It wasn’t an easy catch, it was really travelling. After the game also I spoke to him and he said the ball came very, very fast,” Amre told reporters.

DC kept their IPL 2024 playoff dreams with a crucial victory over RR.

“The way our bowlers executed at the back end was the main positive and it was really good to see. We will try to learn from every game. Even when we lose or win, we will keep our head down and keep moving forward. As always Kuldeep delivered which was great to see. It was close to par and at the same time we were thinking that if we can restrict them to 200 that would be fair and that was the thought process,” DC captain Rishabh Pant said after the match.

After losing to Delhi Capitals by 20 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in IPL 2024, Kumar Sangakkara, the director of cricket at Rajasthan Royals, believes his team should have won the match despite the dramatic dismissal of captain Sanju Samson. Samson slammed a scintillating 46-ball 86, where he was timing all of his eight fours and six sixes like a dream. His fine knock came to an end on the fourth ball of the 16th over in dramatic circumstances when Shai Hope took a screamer of a catch at long-on, balancing himself just millimetres before the boundary ropes off Mukesh Kumar.

The third umpire Michael Gough checked a couple of angles without finding evidence of Hope’s boots coming in contact with the boundary rope, with the decision given as out. Samson had begun walking back after seeing the replays, but on seeing ‘OUT’ flashed on the screen, he walked up to the umpires in protest and even tried to take a review, but it was in vain.

“It depends on replays and angles; sometimes you think the foot has touched. It is a difficult one for third umpire to judge. The game was at a crucial stage; what happens in cricket is you have different perspectives. At the end of the day, you have to abide by the decision third umpire has made.

“If we have some other kind of opinion, we will share and sort it out with the umpires. Irrespective of that dismissal, we should have won the game. But Delhi played really well and fought till the end. They were very smart with their bowling at the back-end,” said Sangakkara in the post-match press conference.

Later on, Samson was fined 30 per cent of his match fees for a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which talks about showing dissent at a decision made by the umpires. “On-field umpires have to go by what TV umpire say. At the end of the day, all the players have to abide by it. There’s a lot of pressure out in the middle on players and officials, so we try to sort it out the best way we can,” added Sangakkara.

Pravin Amre, the DC assistant coach, praised Hope’s athletic effort at the deep to take Samson’s catch. “In IPL, some momentums are very crucial and it was a decider moment in the game. Sanju was batting so well in the game and we have to give credit to the way Hope judged and balanced for the catch.

“Plus, umpires are there, so there’s a lot of technology, and their decision is the final decision. I will give credit to Hope as it wasn’t an easy catch. I spoke to him after the game and he said he anticipated it as the ball came very, very fast,” he said.

With 471 runs in 11 matches, Samson has been consistently amongst the runs for RR, including hitting five half-centuries, to be at third place in the Orange cap race. Amassing runs at a consistent rate was broadly identified as an issue with Samson in past seasons, something which is on display this season, apart from not being dismissed by spin and more importantly, upping his strike-rate whenever needed, as said by Sangakkara.

“The biggest thing about this season for Sanju is, he’s having a lot of clarity about the way he should bat. There are certain stages of the game that he seems to lose a little bit of concentration, which we’ve addressed from past seasons. He’s really bought into it and into his role, not just as a captain but also when he bats just as a batter. (He’s) kind of changed his mindset about the importance of rest and recovery, rather than just training all the time and being tired mentally and physically. So he’s really enjoying that.

“The rest is just his exceptional ability. He’s a very special player and when he is fresh and focused, there’s nothing that he really can’t do. I think his qualities are exceptional. He is a very humble, grounded guy.

“Not much on social media, he likes his privacy. He really cares for the rest of the group. So those are great qualities to have apart from his talent and skill. So, I think, he’d be exceptional in that group going into the World Cup. Again, he’s just exceptionally talented against both pace and spin. High pace doesn’t bother him, turn doesn’t bother him. It’s just the case of focusing and trusting the areas that he scores in and really keeping the intent going.

“It’s not just about the sixes and fours, it’s also about making sure a good ball goes for one or two. But again, he can play any shot in the book. He’s got great power to clear the boundaries, and he’s just exceptionally gifted against spin,” explained Sangakkara.

He signed off by not taking sides in who between Samson and Pant should be India’s main wicketkeeper-batter in the upcoming T20 World Cup. “I think he’s already in the World Cup squad, right? I don’t know, really. That’s really up to Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma and how they see the combination. But he’s made his case, so hopefully he’ll have a good run in the World Cup.”

Delhi Capitals took to social media to post a picture of Shai Hope‘s controversial catch to dismiss Sanju Samson during their IPL 2024 match on Tuesday. “Shai Pakde Hain,” DC posted on their Instagram handle along with the picture. The catch has led to a massive controversy with fans and experts split over whether Hope was able to complete the catch without touching the boundary rope. Samson, who was batting on 86, slammed the shot straight back to Hope at long-on but replays showed that there was a possibility that the fielder ended up coming in contact with the boundary rope. The third umpire ruled in DC’s favour leading to a heated argument between Samson and the on-field umpires.

Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson was fined 30 per cent of his match fees following a heated argument with the on-field umpires during the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday. Controversy erupted over Samson’s dismissal after he was caught in the deep by Shai Hope but the fielder was too close to the stumps. The third umpire ruled in DC’s favour but Samson was not pleased with the decision and he ended up having an argument with the match officials. The replays showed that the fielder was very close to the ropes and the decision left the fans and experts divided.

“Mr Sanju Samson, Captain, Rajasthan Royals has been fined 30 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024,” the official statement read.

“Samson committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” it further stated.

Coming to the match, Samson’s dismissal proved to be pivotal as DC kept their IPL 2024 dreams alive with a win over RR, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel slammed half-centuries to take DC past 200 and a disciplined bowling attack made sure that RR felt well short of the target.

The IPL 2024 match between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals on Tuesday saw a massive controversy over Shai Hope‘s catch to dismiss Sanju Samson. Samson, who was batting on 86, looked in fine form as he slammed DC pacer Mukesh Kumar straight down the ground. However, Hope was positioned at long-on and although he completed the catch, it looked like he was too close to the boundary ropes. The third umpire ruled in DC’s favour prompting disbelief from the RR camp and Sanju ended up having a heated discussion with the umpires. Former India batter Navjot Singh Sidhu claimed that the fielder touched the boundary rope twice during the catch and even came up with a ‘fly in the milk’ analogy to explain the complete situation.

“The decision that changed the game was Sanju Samson’s dismissal. There could be differences of opinion, but if you look at the side-on angle, it touches the boundary twice. It was pretty clear. Either you don’t use technology, or if you’re using it and the technology is making a mistake, it’s like there’s a fly in milk, and someone asks you to drink it,” Sidhu said on Star Sports.

“It touched the boundary line twice. And after this, if someone says that it’s out… see, I’m a neutral person, so I’ve seen it, it’s not out. That’s why I also kept saying it about Kohli (on his dismissal against KKR, which triggered controversy over potential no-ball). Whatever may be the rule, you can see it from the naked eye; some evidence is very strong not to believe. It’s like finding a trout in a glass of milk. Umpire didn’t do it on purpose, no one is at fault. It’s part of the game. That changed the game,” he added.

Samson’s wicket proved crucial as DC kept their IPL 2024 playoff dreams alive with a crucial win over RR.

]]>

Axar Patel believes that his batting position has been affected by ‘Impact Player’ rule while Mukesh Kumar wants it abolished if there isn’t some meaningful alternate help for the bowlers but Sourav Ganguly thinks that in a 12-a-side game, only the best all-rounders will survive. With Rohit Sharma making it clear that he is not a big fan of ‘Impact Player’ which is a glorified 12-a-side contests which hampers the growth of Indian all-rounders, more and more top national team players are expressing their displeasure.

The ‘Impact Player’ rule, introduced in 2023, allows all IPL teams to substitute a player — batter or bowler — during their respective innings as per the demands of the match, but it has raised eyebrows in the ongoing season.

Axar, who sees himself as an all-rounder admitted that because of the rule, his batting position has been affected. “Whosoever is making the rules, they are thinking that everything will work as per batter’s convenience. Obviously, it has been difficult (for the bowlers). According to me, it’s difficult but obviously you will have the opportunity as well that you can perform well in that situation, if you have the skills then how you can use them,” Axar told PTI during a select media interaction.

“Because of the Impact sub rule, everyone gets one more batsman so they think that they will use the batsman in case, the batting unit doesn’t go well. And whosoever comes to play, they don’t take much time and starts from the first ball because they know that they have a player in seventh or eighth place,” he said.

“That is why I am not a big fan of impact player rule, because as an all-rounder I know that they will either take a proper batsman or a bowler, not an all-rounder.” Axar said he had already aired his views with DC skipper Rishabh Pant on the rule. “We (Rishabh), Dada (Sourav Ganguly) and Ricky (Ponting) have talked about it. I can play early, but if you want to give the chance to young player, then you have to give them their position, but because of that (Impact Sub rule) I have to come down the order.” Australia great David Warner feels the ‘Impact Sub’ rule has diminished the role of an all-rounder to some extent from T20 cricket.

“Well, the game is evolving, right. So I think people are just trying different things. If you got 15-16 people on the bench, you know you want to maximise as much as you can. Is the game going to change a lot in the next 10 years? It probably will. “I feel like it’s taken the all round option out now. We are adapting as cricketers, so we’re enjoying that and and it’s also tactically when you’re sitting on the bench, you know, if you’re not scoring runs, then you can put that batsman in,” Warner said.

Pacer Mukesh Kumar feels the rule is an unfair one for bowlers as there is no respite even if you get four batters out quickly.

“If 12 players are not playing at the international level, then what is the need of it in IPL? With 12 players, even if four wickets are down the next player is not scared of getting out or making the team stable, they come and play their shots. So either the nature of tracks should be changed or 12 should not be allowed.” Former India captain and DC mentor Sourav Ganguly and chief coach Ricky Ponting, however, thinks otherwise, saying a good all-rounder will always make it to the playing eleven.

“Little bit (affected) but good all-rounder still play, isn’t it? Hardik Pandya is still playing. You look at Rashid, he’s playing. He’s in the 11th straight away, so good ones will always play. Glenn Maxwell played, obviously, he’s taken a bit of a break, Mitch Marsh played for us, although he didn’t get enough runs for us. But good ones will always be apart because they contribute either with the bat or with the ball,” Ganguly said.

“I don’t think it diminishes the all-rounder’s role but then for average all-rounders you have the option of bringing in a better batsman and a better bowler, but the good ones will always find a place in the side.” Ponting too agreed with Ganguly on the much-debated subject.

“I think it’s a bit of both. I think the batting skills have gotten better as well. I think the mindsets have changed a little bit. So when you put all those three things together, that’s why we’re seeing these 250 plus scores being made. You know what we saw in our game the other night was incredible, you know, for a team to get 125 in the power play.

“We were doing some good things as well, but the impact player is definitely helping. You can stack your batting at the top. You can allow your batters to go out and play with freedom, and then if you get in trouble you can bring in a batsman to try and fix things up. So it’s definitely helping but it’s not ideal for a coach (to comment) and it’s probably not. I’m not sure if it’s good for all-rounders or bad for all-rounders but it seems to be leading to more runs,” Ponting concluded.

As the cricketing world prepares for the highly anticipated T20I World Cup 2024, India will be hoping to have their best fast bowling talents in top form ahead of the tournament. While Mohammed Shami is injured and won’t be a part of the squad, Jasprit Bumrah is a nailed on certainty considering he’s one of the best pacers in the world across formats at the moment. However, the remaining pace bowling spots in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 are up for grabs and here we look at the contenders who are vying for the pace bowling positions.

Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep Singh has been one of the star bowlers in IPL 2024, demonstrating his ability to swing the ball while maintaining remarkable lines and length. The Punjab Kings pacer has nine wickets in IPL 2024 and has shown the ability to pick up wickets at regular intervals. He also has 62 wickets in 44 international appearances for the Men in Blue and while Arshdeep has shown himself as a legitimate wicket-taking option for India in T20 cricket, his habit of surrendering runs in the death overs of late is a major issue.

Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj has not been in good form for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2024 and his chances of making India’s T20 World Cup squad aren’t great. He has taken four wickets in IPL 2024 with an economy rate of 10.41, which doesn’t make for kind reading. Although his T20I numbers for India aren’t the worst having taken 12 wickets at an average of 27.83, Siraj’s propensity to go for runs at the death and his current form does not bode well for his selection chances.

Avesh Khan

Avesh Khan has been in excellent form for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024 having demonstrated his pace and ability to induce steep bounces off the pitch. His aggressive bowling style and ability to take up early wickets have made him a formidable force in the powerplay overs. Avesh has collected seven wickets in seven IPL matches this season and also has a decent T20I record, having taken 19 scalps in 20 outings. If Avesh continues to pick wickets at crucial junctures while remaining economical in IPL 2024, he has an outside chance of making India’s T20 World Cup squad.

Mukesh Kumar

Another pacer with an outside chance of making India’s T20 World Cup squad, Mukesh Kumar may not have been considered for the India T20 World Cup selection a month ago, but his performance in IPL 2024 has certainly put him on the radar. Mukesh has eight wickets in four IPL matches this season and the right-arm medium pacer has also taken 12 wickets in 14 outings for India. Mukesh’s performances in IPL 2024 has helped Delhi Capitals gain some form of late and if he continues to produce strong displays for DC, the 30-year-old might just be one of India’s pacers at the T20 World Cup in 2024.

Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar is another pace option for India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. He has 31 wickets at an average of 24.09 and an economy of 8.30 in T20Is for India. However, his lack of consistency makes it unlikely that he will join the Men in Blue squad. Deepak’s main competitor, Arshdeep, is a death-over specialist with greater international experience than him. Arshdeep also has an edge as a left-arm pacer. Chahar can only force his way into selection contention if he has a highly successful IPL 2024 season. At present, he has taken four wickets in four IPL 2024 games, which is insufficient for him to push his way into the selection reckoning.

Delhi Capitals (DC) assistant coach Pravin Amre justified his team’s decision to use Lalit Yadav in the powerplay during a clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Saturday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. An all-round SRH overcame a scare from Jake Fraser McGurk and secured a 67-run win over DC in the IPL 2024. SRH’s opening pair Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head with their extravagant batting carnage from smoked Lalit in the first over of the game, gathering 21 runs with the help of two boundaries and 2 maximums.

Delhi captain Rishabh Pant gave Lalit the ball to bowl another over during the powerplay, and the off-spinner conceded 20 runs in the fourth over as SRH raced to 83 for no loss in only four overs. In the fourth over, Abhishek struck Lalit Yadav for two sixes and Head hit him for one six. Lalit Yadav did not bowl another over in the game, finishing with no wickets and 41 runs in two overs.

The DC coach claimed that the team’s management intended to deploy Lalit on the powerplay due to his expertise in the local conditions.

“SRH’s strength was the openers. The other teams also could not control it. We thought that Lalit Yadav was a local, Delhi boy, so we took a chance on that. We have to give credit to Abhishek, for the way he handled the spinners. Lalit can be useful because he is a local boy and that’s why we gambled on that.” Amre said in a post-match presentation.

“We were thinking on righty-lefty. We saw dew last time but it was unfortunately not there today but credit to their batting as they put on a record 125 in powerplay. Credit also to Natarajan for taking wickets in such a good batting track.

Sunrisers once again relied on the outstanding power-hitting of openers Head and Abhishek, who helped them set a record 125 for 0 in the powerplay, the highest in men’s T20 cricket. Head’s 32-ball-89 and Abhishek’s 46 off 12 balls, sealed SRH’s match-winning total of 266 for 7 in their 20 overs.

“Credit to the way Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma batter during the powerplay. The intent we have shown was incredible. We have also seen how Jake Fraser-McGurk can bat in his innings. If he had batted 2 more overs, we would have had a chance. Abishek Porel is a finisher but we wanted to use him in powerplays also,” said Delhi Capitals assistant coach.

In the match, SRH was put on the field first by DC. Head (89 in 32 balls, with 11 fours and six sixes) and Abhishek (46 in 12 balls, with two fours and six sixes) put on an explosive stand of 131 runs in 6.2 overs. Later, contributions from Shahbaz Ahmed (59* in 29 balls, with two fours and five sixes) and Nitish Kumar (37 in 27 balls, with two fours and two sixes) came in handy to take SRH to 266/7 in their 20 overs.

Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for DC with 4/55. Mukesh Kumar and Axar Patel also got a six.

In the run chase, DC managed to keep up with SRH’s run rate in the first half of their innings despite losing wickets. Knocks from Jake Fraser McGurk (65 in 18 balls, five fours and seven sixes) and Abhishek Porel (42 in 22 balls, with seven fours and a six) kept the Capitals alive. However after their dismissal, DC lost momentum and despite skipper Rishabh Pant’s fighting (44 in 35 balls, with five fours and a six), the Capitals were restricted to 199 in 19.1 overs.
