Defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant and their archrivals East Bengal FC, the two finalists from the previous edition, have been drawn together in the same group as the group stage draw for the upcoming Durand Cup 2024 was unveiled on Thursday. The 24 teams from the ISL, I-League, international teams, and teams from the Armed Forces will fight it out in Asia’s oldest football tournament, scheduled to commence on July 27. Notably, international teams will also feature with Nepal’s Tribhuvan Army FC and Bangladesh Army Football Team, both returning from the previous edition.

This year, Jamshedpur and Shillong join Kokrajhar and Kolkata as host cities, with each hosting group stage fixtures. Kolkata, the main venue, will host three groups, while Jamshedpur, Shillong, and Kokrajhar will each host one group.

The tournament will follow a round-robin league format with knockout stages, culminating in the final at Kolkata’s Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. In total, 43 matches will be played and the top teams from each group, along with the two best second-placed teams, will advance to the knockout phase.

Here are the groups for Durand Cup 2024:

Group A (Kolkata): Mohun Bagan SG, East Bengal FC, Indian Air Force FT, Downtown Heroes FC

Group B (Kolkata): Bengaluru FC, Inter Kashi FC, Indian Navy FT, Mohammedan SC

Domestic season opener Durand Cup football tournament will be held from July 27 to August 31 across four venues with Indian Super League, I-League and other invitational teams competing in it. The 133rd edition of the Asia’s oldest tournament will have 43 matches to be played in a round-robin league-cum-knockout format, with the opening match and the final scheduled at the iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata. The 24 participating teams will be divided into six groups. Eight teams — group toppers and two best second-placed sides — will qualify for the knockout stage.

Like last year, international teams are expected to participate this year too, the organisers said on Tuesday.

Continuing with its commitment to spread the tournament further into the East and North-East, two new cities — Jamshedpur and Shillong — have been added as host venues this year.

Matches will be held in Kokrajhar in Assam for the second consecutive year, besides Kolkata, which has been a host for the last five years.

Kolkata will host three groups while Kokrajhar, Shillong and Jamshedpur will host one group each.

ISL side Mohun Bagan Super Giant are the defending champions, having won the tournament for a record 17th time, the most by any team.

Bipin Singh came to haunt Mohun Bagan once again as a gritty Mumbai City FC rode on the midfielder’s strike to secure a stunning 3-1 comeback win and grab the ISL title for a second time in front of a partisan Salt Lake Stadium crowd in Kolkata on Saturday. In front of 62,007-strong crowd, the home side roared into the lead with Jason Cummings (44th) strike at the stroke of half-time. But the Islanders levelled things up when Jorge Pereyra Diaz (53rd) silenced the crowd from Alberto Noguera’s magnificent straight pass from the midfield.

Their moment of reckoning came in the 81st minute as Bipin came off the bench to score the decisive second goal to help Mumbai snatch the lead.

It was Bipin’s 90th minute strike that had helped Mumbai City FC win their maiden title in 2020-21 when they overturned an identical 1-0 lead to down Mohun Bagan 2-1.

Nine minutes were added to the second-half, and Mohun Bagan had enough time to bring on the equaliser but their forwards lacked the sting and the Islanders nailed the final nail in the coffin with a 90 7th minute strike by subsitute Jakub Vojtus.

It also crushed Mohun Bagan’s dream of becoming the first team to defend the ISL Cup and complete a rare double of winning the League Winners Shield and the title.

Sergio Lobera-coached Mumbai City FC had achieved the rare feat in their memorable 2020-21 season.

But it was not a day for Mohun Bagan’s shrewd 66-year-old Spaniard tactician Antonio Lopez Habas who appeared in a record fourth ISL final.

Three weeks after the Islanders failed to defend the Shield going down to the same team 1-2 at the same venue, the Petr Kratky-coached side dished out a much-improved show right from the start.

They controlled the possession and initiated a flurry of attacks with Lallianzuala Chhangte in the thick of things, and also hit the post twice in the first half-an-hour’s play.

In the 30th minute, Chhangte whipped in a freekick from an angle as it sailed over a scrambling Vishal Kaith, only to hit the crossbar and bounce out.

A couple of minutes later, Chhangte outpaced Subhasish Bose, receiving a through ball.

Instead of shooting, he passed it back into the six-yard box, but there were no Mumbai men to tap the ball in.

Kaith and the Subhasish Bose-led defence stayed under pressure, dealing with Mumbai’s attacking threats.

Suddenly, Mohun Bagan lifted the atmosphere by storming into the lead.

Liston Colaco played a precise pass to Dimitri Petratos who unleashed a thunderous strike from 40 yards out as Lachenpa flapped it back into the six yard box in a sloppy goalkeeping effort.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man, Mohun Bagan’s chief marksman Jason Cummings sprang into action latching onto the loose ball and calmly chipped it over Phurba Lachenpa with his effortless left-footer.

But the lead did not last long as Mumbai equalised soon after the break.

A special mention should go to Spaniard Alberto Noguera for his pinpoint accuracy in delivering a sublime pass from the midfield straight into the box.

The Mohun Bagan defence was caught off guard by it as the Argentine forward seized the opportunity, effortlessly bypassing Manvir Singh without Anwar Ali to contend with. With a deft left-footed touch, Diaz calmly slotted the ball past Kaith, who stretched out his left leg in a desperate attempt to save, but to no avail.

Three years after he struck the winner in a close-door final at Margao, Bipin once again made the difference after he came on the field replacing Noguera in the 69th minute.

Chhangte dodged past Joni Kauko and took a weak shot, but Bipin’s second attempt deflected off Hector Yuste and into the net, securing the decisive goal.

Jakub capitalised on Bipin’s hold-up play, receiving the ball and calmly passing it to Vikram Pratap Singh, who then set up Bipin for a shot blocked by Anwar.

However, Jakub pounced on the rebound and fired it past the fallen defender to seal the issue.

MBSG and MCFC LIVE: What is MBFC’s strategy for the game?

Asked about this strategy, Habas said: “To finish it in 45 minutes.” “Obviously we don’t want to go to extra team. It’s hot out there so better to finish it in 90 minutes.” The 66-year-old, who has two ISL titles, one Winners Shield making him the most successful coach of the top-tier league, futher said he’s in the fag-end of his career.

  • 17:14 (IST)

MBSG and MCFC LIVE: Here’s what Habas said –

“Statistics have no relevance. We have to continue playing well and complete the circle,” 66-year-old Spanish tactician Antonio Lopez Habas said in the pre-match media interaction. Three years back, Mohun Bagan had squandered a 1-0 lead to suffer a 1-2 defeat against the same team at the ISL final held in Margao, which was played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But revenge is not on Habas’ minds. “I’m not about revenge; that’s stuff you see in movies or with the mafia. It’s just another game against tough opponents, and it’s going to be a great show for the ISL,” Habas said.

MBSG and MCFC LIVE: Mohun Bagan eye massive feat

As per noted football statistician Hari Prasad Chattopadhyay, the last time Mohun Bagan won three titles or more was more than 23 years back when they had won the erstwhile National Football League (NFL), Federation Cup, Calcutta Premier Division League, Sikkim Gold Cup and Bordoloi Trophy. The coach was India captain Sunil Chhetri’s father-in-law Subroto Bhattacharyya. Mumbai City FC have done it before in 2020-21 and the stage will be set for Mohun Bagan to follow suit.

Mohun Bagan will look to cap off their fairytale season with a historic treble as they face Mumbai City FC in the ISL summit clash at Salt Lake Stadium, with 62,000 partisan fans expected to cheer their guts out and paint the stands in green and maroon, creating an electrifying atmosphere here on Saturday. The season began with the Mariners winning the Durand Cup for the first time after 23 years. Having slipped to fifth in the table at midway stage, Antonio Habas took over from Juan Ferrando and led them to their maiden League Winners Shield.

Two weeks after they defeated Mumbai City FC 2-1 to win their maiden Shield, the two teams will return to the same venue of Salt Lake Stadium with an aim to complete a rare double in the ISL and a hattrick of titles in one season.

“Statistics have no relevance. We have to continue playing well and complete the circle,” the 66-year-old Spanish tactician said in the pre-match media interaction.

Three years back, Mohun Bagan had squandered a 1-0 lead to to suffer a 1-2 defeat against the same team at the ISL final held in Margao, which was played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But revenge is not on Habas’ minds.

“I’m not about revenge; that’s stuff you see in movies or with the mafia. It’s just another game against tough opponents, and it’s going to be a great show for the ISL,” Habas said.

The target however is to finish the game in “45 minutes”, said Habas making it clear that he will go allout in attack with Anirudh Thapa, Jason Cummings, Dimitri Petratos and Manvir Singh.

Asked about this strategy, he said: “To finish it in 45 minutes.” “Obviously we don’t want to go to extra team. It’s hot out there so better to finish it in 90 minutes.” The 66-year-old, who has two ISL titles one Winners Shield making him the most successful coach of the top-tier league, futher said he’s in the fag-end of his career.

“I’m in the final stage of my coaching career and it’s a proud moment for me.” Mohun Bagan’s attack will be boosted by a fit-again India midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad who came off the bench to strike the winning goal against Odisha FC in the return leg ISL semi-final.

While Sahal will be fit, Armando Sadiku will miss the match.

Mumbai City on the other hand will bank of Vikram Pratap Singh and Lallianzuala Chhangte, while their Dutch midfielder Yoell van Nieff will miss out because of suspension.

“For last four years, ISL battle is all about Mumbai and Mohun Bagan who are fighting for this Shield and Trophy. The recipe for our success has been to stay together and play together. When the season began, we were a group, now we have become a family and we have to play like one.” Mohun Bagan have frequently struggled to maintain their lead and have conceded goals due to defensive lapses, a vulnerability that Mumbai City FC head coach Petr Kratky will surely be mindful of and seized the momentum.

“Players want to play in front of packed stadium, I think it will be an extra motivation to do well,” he said.

He further said losing the Shield was difficult. “We knew what was at stake, it’s always hard. We tried to regroup put ourselves together. A couple of training sessions the spirit was little down, but now we are good to continue.”

Mohun Bagan produced one of their finest displays of the season to crush arch-rivals 3-1 in their Indian Super League return leg clash at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday. Cleiton Silva missed from the spot in the 14th minute but since then it was a one-way traffic for Mohun Bagan who scored the goals through Jason Cummings (27th minute), Liston Colaco (36th) and Dimitri Petratos (penalty – 45 3′) to cruise to 3-0 lead at the half time break. Saul Crespo (53rd) struck his maiden goal of the Indian Super League to pull one back for East Bengal but Mohun Bagan were back at their dominant best and ensured that there was no more blip to hold on to the 3-1 scoreline.

The win took Mohun Bagan past Mumbai City in the lead spot of the standings on goal difference and to the playoff spot.

Both sides now have 36 points each but Mohun Bagan have one match in hand and remain firm favourties for the Shield.

With the loss, East Bengal are out of play-off race.

Mohun Bagan had an early chance in the 8th minute when Petratos slotted a cross in for an unmarked Cummings from the left, but his header was wayward.

In the 13th minute, East Bengal were awarded a penalty after Vishal Kaith tripped Cleiton who had the ball possession. But as it turned out, Kaith produced a beauty of a save, outstretched to his left to save the Cleiton spotkick.

Out of nowhere, Cummings found himself in perfect position from the edge of the box to score from a rebound off East Bengal goalkeeper to give Mohun Bagan the much-needed lead.

It was Joni Kauko who initiated the move from the midfield before Sahal took the possesion but a misclearance from an East Bengal defender saw the ball in the path of Petratos.

The Australian was quick to fire the shot but only to be pushed away by a diving goalkeeper. Cummings was quick to take control of the ball and score off a right-footed strike to the top left corner.

Within 10 minutes, Colaco extended Mohun Bagan lead in a similar fashion like the previous one. This time the ball ricochetted off the post from a Petratos strike only to come back to him again.

The Australian then gave it back to an unmarked Colaco on the far post with a first touch as the Indian midfielder does the needful to give Mohun Bagan a 2-0 lead.

Sahal was tripped by Nandha Kumar in the first-half injury time as Mohun Bagan got another penalty and this time Petratos got it right to make it 3-0 at halftime. PTI TAP PDS PDS

Super Cup champions Odisha FC revived their AFC Cup campaign with a 6-1 demolition of Maziya Sports & Recreation of Maldives at the Kalinga Stadium on Tuesday. After defeats against Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Bashundhara Kings, Odisha finally got points on the board in Group D, keeping their hopes of progression to the knockout stage alive. It was a flurry of action from the opening whistle with Odisha needing only three minutes to take the lead when Lalthathanga Khawlhring scored on the half-turn, after Mourtada Fall had won a header from a corner kick.

Maziya, however, caught their hosts by surprise in the 13th minute from a corner kick of their own. Branimir Jocic met Hamza Mohamed’s delivery with a looping header that caught Odisha custodian Amrinder Singh off guard.

The parity lasted just two minutes as Odisha regained the lead with Carlos Delgado producing an incredible header to guide the ball past Hussain Shareef from an Ahmed Jahouh free-kick.

The Kalinga Warriors went on to increase their lead in the 19th minute when Delgado turned provider, setting up Fall for another header.

After a breathless end-to-end start to the game, the match endured a calmer period and it was only after half-time the intensity picked up once again.

Maziya went close to reducing the gap in the 48th minute when the dangerous Hamza created space by cutting in from the left but his goal bound shot was pushed out by Amrinder.

Instead, it was the home side who would score again 10 minutes later, with Maziya’s failure to deal with yet another corner set-piece allowing Amey Ranawade to score through a glorious long range curler into the bottom corner.

Isak Vanlalruatfela made it 5-1 in the 62nd minute, finishing from close range after Diego Mauricio had beaten the offside trap to square the ball to his teammate. Sahil Panwar scored the sixth goal in added time (90+5th) to cap the resounding win.

The two teams will meet again on November 7.
