The government has handed over the security of the visiting Sri Lankan team to the Pakistan Military forces after they agreed to continue the tour on the intervention of Army chief Asim Munir after a serial bomb blasts rocked Islamabad.

The chairman of PCB and Federal Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi said that since state level security is now being provided to the visiting team their security is now being looked after by the army and rangers in conjunction with the police.

Mr. Naqvi also told the media in Rawalpindi on Thursday (November 13, 2025) night when he met with the Pakistani and Sri Lankan players at the stadium that the Sri Lankan government and board had shown great support for Pakistan cricket by continuing with the tour.

He confirmed that some Sri Lankan players wanted to return home due to security concerns after the terror attack in Islamabad.

“The positive outcome was only achieved through sustained engagement between Pakistani and Sri Lankan leadership,” he said.

He also confirmed that Army Chief Munir had assured Sri Lankan Defence Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon of the team’s safety.

“The Field Marshal himself spoke to the Sri Lankan Defence Minister and Secretary and I am grateful the players showed great bravery to decide to remain in Pakistan,” he added.

Mr. Naqvi said that he himself had held a long meeting with the Sri Lankan players to assure them their safety and well being was the responsibility of the Pakistan government.

“They had many concerns, but we tried to allay all of those,” Mr. Naqvi said, highlighting that Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake spoke with his country’s team to convince them.

The New Zealand team had abandoned their white ball tour of Pakistan in September 2021 after getting creditable intel about security threats to them in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated that there are no concerns about BCCI secretary Jay Shah becoming the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman.

Earlier, Jay Shah was elected unopposed as the ICC Chairman. Mr. Shah was the sole nominee for the chairmanship after current chair Greg Barclay decided not to seek a third term. Mr. Naqvi opened up about Mr. Shah becoming the ICC chairman and the next Asian Cricket Council meeting.

“We are in touch with Jay Shah, there are no concerns about his becoming ICC Chairman. The ACC meeting is on September 8 and 9,” Mr. Naqvi said, as quoted from Geo News.

Mr. Naqvi confirmed that he won’t be present at the meeting and said, “I will not be able to attend the meeting, and Salman Nasir will attend. The meeting will finalise matters related to the new President.”

Mr. Shah will assume this prestigious role on December 1, 2024. He is the youngest person to lead the ICC. He also joins the likes of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar as Indians who have led the ICC in the past.

Pakistan will play host to next year’s ICC Champions Trophy. Karachi National Stadium, Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, and the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium are under renovation work for the marquee event.

Before the marquee event, Pakistan is struggling to find the form and produce positive results. In Jason Gillespie’s first assignment as Test head coach of Pakistan, the Shan Masood-led team hit rock bottom after enduring a whitewash against Bangladesh on their home soil. Following the defeat, Pakistan dropped to eighth position in the ICC Test rankings, their lowest ranking in the format since 1965, barring the period where they did not have a place in the rankings due to an insufficient number of matches. Pakistan Cricket Board’s incumbent chairman Mohsin Naqvi is set to become the next president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) later this year as per its rotation policy.

The matter of the president’s post was discussed at a recent ACC meeting with Naqvi in line to become the next head.

“When the ACC meets later this year, it will confirm that Naqvi will be the next president for a two-year term,” a source said.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah is the incumbent ACC president, having got one-year extension in January this year for a third consecutive term.

“When Shah steps down the PCB chief will take over,” the source added.

The ACC has recently awarded the hosting rights of the Asia Cup 2025 to India as the tournament will be held in T20 format and the 2027 edition in ODI format to Bangladesh.

This implies that two major events are scheduled in 2025 — the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February-March followed by the Asia Cup — which will serve as a precursor to the T20 World Cup 2026.

The two events are again likely to ignite discussions and speculations on whether India would travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, or whether Pakistan will travel to India for the Asia Cup.

Pakistan travelled to India last year for the ODI World Cup after visiting the country 2011 for the ODI World Cup and in 2016 for the T20 World Cup.

India has not visited Pakistan since 2008 when they last toured for the 50-overs Asia Cup.
