Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stalwart Virat Kohli minced no words as he blasted those criticising his strike-rate and inability to get going against spinners in the middle overs. Kohli moved into offense with the mic in his hand after the Bengaluru side defeated Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash on Sunday. With Kohli himself scoring 44-ball 70, he ripped into those making ‘expert comments’ while sitting in the commentary box. After the match, Kohli found the backing of former India all-rounder Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Sidhu, who has been working as a pundit on Star Sports for the IPL 2024, slammed those targeting Virat over his strike-rate. The former cricketer-tuned-commentator highlighted the technical aspects of Kohli’s game, coupled with his exceptional career, that make him the player he is today.

“People think Kohli is God. He is a human, so will play like a human too. Rather than nitpick, why don’t we look at the fact that the guy has 80 centuries. That’s his strength and weakness, he has none. And if you look carefully, today he played off the backfoot and lofted the spinners. Tell me how many can do that? Hitting a left-arm spinner against the spin… how many can do that? So Kohli has a presence, he cherishes his wicket too. What else is he supposed to do?” Sidhu said.

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif, who has been defending Kohli against strike-rate critics for a long time, once spoke against the strike-rate chatter.

“All I hear about these days is strike-rate. People are after Kohli. Boss, between overs 7 and 15, it’s obvious to slow down. The economy-rate of a spinner is lower than a fast bowler. Why? Because they bowl the middle overs,” Kaif said.

With win against Gujarat, Bengaluru have kept their playoffs hopes alive. But, for the team to qualify for the next stage, there still remains a long journey to cover.

Former India all-rounder Mohammad Kaif heaped praise on Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s stalwart batter Virat Kohli and weighed down the recent criticism on his strike rate after his blitz along with Will Jacks left Gujarat Titans dazed at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), Virat Kohli completed 500 runs for the seventh consecutive time as RCB emerged victorious with a 9-wicket win. Kohli stood out with his quick-fired 70* played a significant role in RCB’s triumph and brushed off the recent debate around his strike rate.

Kaif praised the experienced star and pinpointed the importance of Kohli by recalling the six that he struck in Haris Rauf’s over during India’s clash against Pakistan in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup.

During the game, the ‘chase master’ Virat Kohli achieved a landmark feat during RCB’s clash against GT.

In his unbeaten knock of 70 runs from 44 balls, struck at a massive strike rate of 159.09, Kohli completed 24 half-centuries while chasing a target, he now stands second in the list. Dhawan holds the third place with 23 fifty-plus scores. Meanwhile, David Warner stands in the top spot with 35 half-centuries while chasing a target.

The fiery 133-run partnership between Virat Kohli and Will Jacks also etched the record books. It was the highest partnership scored against Gujarat Titans in the history of the IPL. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals’ Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag’s 130-run partnership holds second place on the highest partnership scored against the Gujarat-based partnership.

Kohli also equalled David Warner’s record of most 500-plus runs in IPL seasons. Both Kohli and Warner have crossed the 500-run mark seven times in an IPL season.

Coming to the match, after putting GT to bat, Sai Sudharsan (86*) and Shahrukh Khan’s (58) blitz powered the hosts to a competitive total of 200/3.

In reply, after skipper Faf du Plessis’s dismissal, Kohli and Jacks rattled GT’s bowling unit with their 166*-run stand to clinch a 9-wicket win for RCB.

Since Sunday, the one incident which has been talked about the most in the IPL is Virat Kohli‘s dismissal off Harshit Rana‘s bowling in Kolkata. In a match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders, Kohli was caught and bowled by Harshit Rana. There is big ambiguity on whether the ball was legal or not. Kohli was convinced that the full toss was a no-ball nd the former RCB captain even vent out his frustration by shouting at the umpire. Kohli has been fined 50 per cent of his match fees following the act.

Though Kohli went for review, the replays showed that the ball was dipping and as Kohli was standing outside his crease, the ball would have ended up dipping below his waist if he was standing at his normal batting position.

After the incident, former Indian cricket team star Mohammad Kaif took to Instagram to slam the umpiring in IPL 2024.

“Clear unplayable beamer gets Kohli out and a ball that passed under Dhoni’s bat declared wide. Cameras, replays, technology but still such mistakes being made. Poor umpiring,” he wrote in a post on Instagram. The post was liked by Virat Kohli too.

Commenting on Virat Kohli’s punishment for showing dissent, the IPL said in a release: “Mr Virat Kohli, Batter, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been fined 50 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024.

“Kohli committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.”
