The Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match between Mohammedan Sporting and Prime Bank on Thursday witnessed a massive controversy over a female umpire officiating in the match, according to a report by The Daily Star. Shathira Jakir Jessy scripted history by becoming the first female umpire from Bangladesh to officiate in a DPL match after she was recently added in the ICC development panel. However, the occasion was marred by controversy as team officials from both sides were unhappy with the decision taken by Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) to appoint a female umpire. The incident went viral  and players like Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim were criticised for their involvement.

“More than the players, the team officials were vocal regarding this,” a BCB source said.

“Yes, they were unhappy that BCB had appointed a female umpire but the match had to go on,” BCB umpires’ committee chairman Iftekhar Ahmed Mithu told The Daily Star.

“They made comments regarding their unhappiness [regarding appointment]. They did not make the complaint to me but did so with CCDM. It’s unfortunate since our Prime Minister is a woman. We should encourage these appointments,” he added.

Things got worse when Mushfiqur Rahim was caught in the deep by Abu Haider Rony but replays showed that his foot was over the boundary rope when the catch was completed. However, no video reviews were available in the match and the on-field umpires decided to rule against Mushfiqur.

Later, in an interview with The Business Standard, Iftekhar Ahmed said that the clubs did not register a formal complaint and the issue was regarding the umpire’s experience and not gender.

“There was no formal complaint to us from either club. Some are suggesting the players were reluctant, but that’s completely wrong,” Iftekhar Ahmed told TBS.

“Prime Bank’s manager, Shikdar Abul Hashem Kankan, and Mohammedan’s Tarikul Islam Tito have admitted that they expressed dissatisfaction due to inexperienced umpires, not because they were female. Primarily, they were unhappy because they were given inexperienced umpires to officiate such an important match,” he added.

As Bangladesh collapsed to a disappointing defeat against Netherlands in their World Cup match on Saturday, a fan was seen beating himself up with a shoe at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Bangladesh fans had made a short trip across the border to support their team, which is also scheduled to play Pakistan at the same venue on Tuesday, October 31. As frustration creeped in on the faces of the Bangladesh supporters, a fan took his anger out by slapping himselft with his shoe.

The video was shared by a user on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which has now gone viral.

The Dutch stunned Bangladesh to register their second win of the tournament, having pulled off an upset against South Africa earlier in the tournament.

Bangladesh had the Netherlands in trouble at 63-4 but paid the price for dropping skipper Scott Edwards twice in three balls when he was yet ti open his account.

Edwards went on to finish as top scorer with 68.

Chasing a modest 230-run target, Bangladesh folded for just 142 in 42.2 overs against some accurate Dutch bowling led by Paul van Meekeren (4-23) and Bas de Leede (2-25).

Bangladesh are ninth in the 10-team table with games remaining against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan said his team’s 87-run loss to the Netherlands in Kolkata was their worst-ever World Cup performance.

India take on Bangladesh in their World Cup 2023 match at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune. While India are unbeaten after three games, Bangladesh have lost their last two games, having kicked off their campaign with a win. India and Bangladesh have squared off four times in ODI World Cups, with India winning three of those matches. Bangladesh’s only win against India came during the 2007 World Cup in West Indies. However, Bangladesh have won three of the last four ODIs against India, including an Asia Cup Super Four Clash last month.

4. KL Rahul: India’s KL Rahul has made 116 runs in 3 matches so far. The right-handed batter has a strike rate of 80.56. The middle-order batter has scored one half-century with his best score being 97 not out, came against Australia.

5. Mehidy Hasan Miraz: Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan has scored 95 runs in 3 matches so far. The right-handed batter averages 31.66 and has a strike rate of 75.39. The top-order batter has notched up one half-century in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. India vs Bangladesh head-to-head record in ODIs

India and Bangladesh have faced each other 40 times so far in ODIs with the Men in Blue enjoying a major advantage in the head-to-head record. However, in the last five matches, Bangladesh have registered three wins while India have only won two. Bangladesh also won the last ODI match against India in the Asia Cup 2023.

India vs Bangladesh ODI records

Highest score: India posted 418/5 against West Indies in 2011, which stands as the highest score for the Men in Blue in the ODIs. For Bangladesh, the highest ODI score of 349/6 came against Ireland in 2023.

Lowest score: For India, (54) the lowest score came against Sri Lanka in 2000. Bangladesh posted the lowest score of 58 against the West Indies in 2011.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 points table

India are ranked first in the points table of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with 6 points and a net run rate of +1.82. They have won all of their 3 matches.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, are seventh with 2 points from 3 matches. They have won 1 match and lost 2, with a net run rate of -0.699.

India vs Bangladesh prediction

Team India are in sublime form having won all their three previous matches comfortably. The Rohit Sharma-led team has played as a unit and looks like a settled side. The batters have found their touch while the bowlers are hitting an impeccable line to trouble the opposition batsmen.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh started the campaign with a win over Afghanistan, but have since lost ground following defeats to England and New Zealand in the last two matches. A shock win over India will boost their campaign, however, it might be a far-fetched thought considering the form India are in. India will go into the match as favourites to register another resounding triumph in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup.

Bangladesh have always been a competitive side in the white ball formats but face a huge reality check as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 begins on Thursday, October 4. Like some of their rivals, Bangladesh too would have liked to face that pleasant problem of plenty but right now they are dealing with plenty of problems from injuries to in-house fights. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has been at loggerheads with opening batter Tamim Iqbal, and branded the former skipper as “childish”. Considered the backbone of Bangladesh’s golden generation, Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah are expected to make their swansong at the World Cup.

Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim got dismissed in a bizarre manner that left the social media stunned during the third one-day international against New Zealand at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday. During the 16th over of the Bangladesh innings, Mushfiqur chopped a delivery from Lockie Ferguson towards his stumps and in desperation to stop himself from getting dismissed, he decided to kick the ball away. However, before he could complete the save, the ball crashed into the stumps and he ended up disturbing them even more with his boots. There was slight confusion regarding the nature of the dismissal but it was given bowled by the umpires.

Earlier, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bat.

New Zealand eye their first series win in Bangladesh in 15 years, having taken a 1-0 lead in the series thanks to their 86-run win in the second match on Saturday.

The first match was washed out by rain.

Bangladesh initially rested key players, but with the series at stake, they brought back stalwarts Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Shoriful Islam.

Liton Das, who led in the first two matches, was rested while Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, and Mustafizur Rahman were left out.

New Zealand handed over an ODI debut to Dean Foxcroft for Chad Bowes, and brought Adam Milne for Kyle Jamieson in their two changes.

The match is last for both teams before the World Cup starts in India on October 5.

Bangladesh: Najmul Hossain Shanto (capt), Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Zakir Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed.

New Zealand: Lockie Ferguson (capt), Finn Allen, Tom Blundell, Dean Foxcroft, Trent Boult, Cole McConchie, Henry Nicholls, Rachin Ravindra, Ish Sodhi, Will Young, Adam Milne.

Bangladeshi batsman Mushfiqur Rahim will skip Friday’s Asia Cup Super Four match against India to spend time with his wife and newborn daughter, the cricket board said Wednesday. Bangladesh is already out of the race for the September 17 final after India defeated Sri Lanka by 41 runs in Colombo on Tuesday, in the tournament that is a prelude to the upcoming ODI World Cup in India. Mushfiqur had returned to Bangladesh for the birth of his second child, born on Monday. He was initially expected to rejoin the team for the India match in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo. He will now remain in Dhaka, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said.

“Mushfiqur has informed us that his wife is still recovering, and he needs to be by her side and with their children,” BCB operations chief Mohammed Jalal Yunus.

“We fully understand his situation, and have decided to permit him to skip the game.”

Skipper Shakib Al Hasan, who also returned home with Mushfiqur after their defeat against Sri Lanka on September 9, rejoined the team in Colombo on Wednesday.

They will wrap up the campaign with the India game, before preparing for a three-match series against New Zealand at home next week.

Survival will be foremost in Bangladesh’s mind whereas Sri Lanka will aim for a winning start when they cross swords in the second Super 4 match of the Asia Cup on Saturday. A seven-wicket towelling at the hands of Pakistan in the Super 4 opener in Lahore has made a victory mandatory for Bangladesh against the Lankans, assuming that the weather remains dry enough for the match to take place. A defeat will almost certainly put an end to their Asia Cup campaign. Batting is their main concern, and they will have to address it immediately.

They did make 334 for 5 against Afghanistan riding on hundreds by Najmal Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the league phase.

But they came a cropper against more capable bowling units of Sri Lanka and Pakistan, making meagre totals of 164 and 193 respectively.

That propensity to go flat against top-class opponents will worry them going into the match against Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankans have a set of bowlers like Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana etc who can inflict high damage, and Bangladesh know it first-hand.

The pace-spin combination of Pathirana and Theekshana had taken six wickets among them to restrict Bangladesh to a sub-200 total in a Group B league match at Pallekele on August 31.

Sri Lanka are better placed in that department and pacer Kasun Rajitha had also played a handy role in their narrow win over Afghanistan in the last league match of the Asia Cup in Lahore on September 5.

Even though he went for a lot of runs, Rajitha’s four-wicket haul helped Lanka score a narrow 2-run victory in that match, along with the Afghans’ unawareness of the run equation.

But the hosts too have their own worries.

The way Afghan batters piled up 289 runs in just 37.4 overs will serve as a timely reminder to the Lankan bowlers about the need to stay focused on the task.

Hence, Bangladesh will be eager to see their frontline batters rising to the occasion.

But they will not have the services of Shanto, who has been ruled out of the Asia Cup with a hamstring injury as Litton Das joined the side ahead of their match against Pakistan but failed to score too many.

Das could not play the first match of the tournament due to viral fever.

So, they will require heavier runs from captain Shakib Al Hasan, who made an 18-ball 32 against Afghanistan but scored half-century in a losing cause against Pakistan.

In turn, Sri Lanka will hope that their captain Dasun Shanaka will be able to deliver on the morrow.

Shanaka can be a handy customer with both bat and ball, but he has been going through a modest run the whole of this year. While their batters have been well below-par on most occasions, Bangladesh bowlers too do not have much to rejoice about.

They never really threatened both Pakistan and Lanka, while it was Afghanistan’s urge to score quickly spelt their doom than any real skilled spell by Bangladesh bowlers.

The likes of Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam can be nagging customers, but then it has not shown in this tournament yet.

So, it could turn into a fascinatingly tight contest between two teams who have their own little perturbations.

Teams: Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (captain), Anamul Haque Bijoy, Litton Das, Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Nasum Ahmed, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Naim Sheikh, Shamim Hossain, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Tanzim Hasan Sakib.

Sri Lanka: Dasun Shanaka (captain), Pathum Nissanaka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Janith Perera, Kusal Mendis (vice-captain), Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Matheesha Pathirana, Kasun Rajitha, Dushan Hemantha, Binura Fernando, Pramod Madushan.

Match starts at 3 PM IST.
