Former India batter Mohammad Kaif feels there is no reason why Mahendra Singh Dhoni should not play the next season of the IPL, given his form, fitness and ability to play big shots with ease.

Speculation has been rife that Dhoni, who has led CSK to five IPL titles, could have played his last IPL season.

The former CSK skipper, who had undergone surgery to treat a knee injury issue last year, scored 161 runs in 73 balls at a strike rate of 220.55 this season. He was also good behind the stumps.

Kaif thinks Dhoni has enough left in the tank to keep playing.

“Personally, I don’t think he’s done, he could not win the game (last league match against RCB). In the last over after hitting a six, he got out. You could make out seeing his body language that he seemed very disappointed not winning the game for CSK,” Kaif, a cricket expert and commentator with the official TV broadcaster of IPL 2024, Star Sports, told PTI Videos.

“Why he should not come back? He is fit, he is scoring runs and hitting sixes, and there’s no reason to stop playing… it’s up to him, we can’t say with Dhoni what’s his plan,” added Kaif, regarded as one of India’s greatest fielders.

The 43-year-old also said that Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Shreyas Iyer had been a revelation with his calm demeanour, and attributed the team’s success this year to his leadership qualities.

Two-time IPL champions KKR entered their fourth final with a thumping eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 1. They had also topped the league stage with 20 points.

“He (Iyer) missed the whole IPL last year and KKR probably missed his captaincy in 2023. The way he is changing the bowlers, and picking his playing XI, he looks very calm under pressure.

“In a tournament like the IPL, you have to be very composed, you have to know what’s happening in the game and Iyer has come a long way. He has become a much better captain now,” opined Kaif.

Experts are also attributing KKR’s success this season to Gautam Gambhir returning to the side as the team mentor but Kaif said the team’s superb run had got a lot to do with how Iyer marshals his boys on the field.

“We always talk about (Gautam) Gambhir, but he can’t enter the field… in the rope with the players. Iyer has been there with the players and it will help him grow as a person and player.

“He missed out on the (T20) World Cup this year (beginning in the US and West Indies next month), but certainly it’s great learning for him, captaining the team, leading it to the finals. He has a great future ahead,” said Kaif.

Kaif said KKR were the overwhelming favourites to lift the IPL trophy this season given that they have quality bowlers and a balanced side, the two ingredients required to win.

“I think KKR is a very well-balanced side. Tournament-winning team has to have good bowlers, KKR has got the bowlers. You saw how (Mitchell) Starc bowled against (SRH in Qualifier 1), it’s a balanced side. KKR has got all bases covered in terms of batting and bowling. They are the team to beat in IPL, they are way ahead.”

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has backed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to come out on top in their crunch IPL 2024 clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Sunday. RCB and CSK face off in Bengaluru with a place in the IPL 2024 playoffs on the line. According to Kaif, CSK are team for the big occasions, highlighting the IPL final last year when they beat Gujarat Titans after Ravindra Jadeja hit boundaries on the last two balls.

Kaif suggested CSK tend to do well in do-or-die matches, and former captain MS Dhoni‘s presence will be a boost for the team.

“CSK are a team for big matches and they know how to win, know how to win knock-out matches. The last time they won the IPL in 2023, they were losing the final – 2 balls, 10 runs. It was almost over and [Ravindra] Jadeja hit four and six to win the match. Dhoni himself is in form this time with the bat, and whoever bats with him usually plays a matchwinning knock, especially in a do-or-die game,” Kaif said on Star Sports.

Kaif highlighted how Dhoni makes very few mistakes and his ability to read the game will help CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in the crunch game against RCB.

“Dhoni’s formula in crunch games is – don’t panic, take a breath and only he has this art in crunch matches. Lots of IPL captains came, but Dhoni’s alertness in the crucial moment of the game is unmatched. He makes very few mistakes, and that’s why they are a champion team [Dhoni galtiyan kam karte hai isliye CSK champion team hai]. Because of this, CSK are favourites against RCB in the crucial league match,” he added.

Historically, CSK have done well against RCB, winning 22 of their 33 matches. The defending champions had also won the reverse fixture back on the opening day of IPL 2024 in Chennai.

The race to the playoffs of IPL 2024 is now picking pace. While Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have already sealed the berth for themselves, a total of five teams are still in race for the remaining two spots. Chennai Super Kings, SunRisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants are the teams fighting for the top-4 finish. Among the remaining crucial games will be the RCB vs CSK match in Bengaluru on May 18.

While the winner of the game will get closer to IPL 2024 playoffs, the losing side will be eliminated from the tournament. Former India stars Irfan Pathan, Ambati Rayudu, Mohammad Kaif and ex-Australia players Matthew Hayden and Tom Moody told Star Sports as quoted by Hindustan Times that it will be CSK and not RCB, who will make it to the playoffs.

“Kolkata, Rajasthan, Hyderabad and… Chennai Super Kings are my picks. Because I feel CSK will find some or the other way to make the Playoffs. They are a legacy team,” said Irfan Pathan.

Meanwhile, former CSK star Ambati Rayudu said, “My top four predictions for now will be KKR at the top, followed by Chennai Super Kings at second. RR and SRH the other two.”

Mohammad Kaif, who also holds the experience of playing 29 IPL matches, said, “At the top for me would be KKR. At No. 2 would be (Rajasthan) Royals. At third would be (Sunrisers) Hyderabad and at the 4th position I would bank on CSK because they know how to perform in the big matches.”

“My top four, in no particular order, are… well, one has actually qualified. KKR are certainly there. I’m going to go with Rajasthan Royals. They have to beat this poor slump that they find themselves in (losing three matches in a row). Then I’ll pick Sunrisers Hyderabad since they have their matches back home and then CSK to win that derby against RCB on May 18,” said former CSK player Matthew Hayden.

“My top four in the Playoffs would be KKR at first place, Rajasthan Royals in the second position, Sunrisers Hyderabad at third and just falling into that fourth position, Chennai Super Kings,” said ex-SRH coach Tom Moody.

Mathematically, five teams are fighting for two remaining spots in the IPL 2024 playoffs, with Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals already assured of the other two spots. Practically, though, the fight is between three teams – Chennai Super Kings, SunRisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are in with a good chance. Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants are too far away on Net run-rate. LSG were in with a good chance but their loss to Delhi Capitals on Tuesday means that advancing to the playoffs is almost improbable.

Former Indian cricket team star Mohammad Kaif was not happy with Rahul’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss in Delhi.

“Take the video analyst’s computer and throw it away. They didn’t go with any numbers. 200 has not been chased here at all. I am telling you this year’s numbers. In all four matches, the team batting first has won. You won the toss and said you would field first,” Mohammad Kaif said on Star Sports.

“The biggest mistake was the decision at the toss… So, there will be a question mark on the bowling as well. Lucknow had everything to gain from this match… I believe it was an absolute flop show from Lucknow.”

Another former Indian cricket team star Aakash Chopra was also not happy with the way Lucknow Super Giants went about their chase.

“When Lucknow came to bat, what batting are you doing? Quinton de Kock‘s bat is not striking the ball and KL Rahul got out for five. After that, (Marcus) Stoinis came and he was left stranded in the middle. Deepak Hooda got out for zero. What are you doing?” questioned Chopra while speaking on his YouTube channel.

KL Rahul has not been in the nest of form lately. He was also not selected for the Indian squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has lashed out at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain KL Rahul after the loss at the hands of Delhi Capitals (DC) in their IPL 2024 match on Tuesday. Kaif lambasted Rahul for opting to bowl on a batting first pitch, while also questioning the role of the video analysts. Abhishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs slammed half-centuries as DC posted 208/4 after being invited to bat first at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In reply, LSG were restricted to 189/9, despite a half-century each from Nicholas Pooran and Arshad Khan.

While analysing the match, Kaif didn’t mince his words and criticised Rahul for opting to bowl on a pitch where teams batting second are yet to win a game this season.

“Take the video analyst’s computer and put it away. They didn’t go with any numbers. 200 has not been chased here at all. I am telling you this year’s numbers. In all four matches, the team batting first has won. You won the toss and said you would field first,” the former DC assistant coach said on Star Sports.

Kaif lavished praise on all-rounder Arshad Khan for salvaging some pride for LSG. Arshad hit 58 off just 33 balls to keep LSG in the hunt till the last over.

“If you leave aside Arshad Khan’s knock, it was a very bad defeat. Arshad saved your pride a little. I believe it was a horrible decision not to bat first here. KL Rahul disappointed a lot as a captain. You said you would play positive but you need to make positive decisions as well,” he added.

Kaif also pointed out how LSG squandered a golden opportunity to boost their playoffs hopes by making one mistake at the toss.

“You checked the pitch and felt that it had moisture. There was no moisture – 200 is scored here. The biggest mistake was the decision at the toss. After that, you allowed them to score 200 even after dismissing Jake Fraser-McGurk. So there will be a question mark on the bowling as well.

“Delhi will not gain anything from this. They got two points but their net run rate has not improved much. Lucknow had everything to gain from this match. They had to lose or gain. If they had won, they could have reached 16 points. I believe it was an absolute flop show from Lucknow,” Kaif went on to add.

LSG are all but out of the play-off race. They would first need to win their last match by a very big margin and then hope two of CSK, SRH and RCB lose their games by very big margins.

Virat Kohli once again rose the tallest, but this time with an impressive strike-rate of 195, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured a 60-run victory against Punjab Kings on Thursday. Kohli’s 47-ball 92 was the cornerstone of RCB’s innings as he starred in two partnerships — 72 off 32 balls with Rajat Patidar (55 off 23 balls) and 92 off 46 balls with Cameron Green (46 off 27 balls) to propel RCB to 241/7. Virat’s knock also settled the enraging debate around Virat’s strike-rate and intent. Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif feels the fact that Kohli got out while trying to hit a six at 92, ends the debate around his intent in the shortest format of the game.

“Virat Kohli 92 for 47 ball gets out trying to hit a six in the 18th over. Strike rate and intent debate around the team man should stop now,” Kaif posted on X (formerly Twitter)

Kohli, who was dropped on 0 and 10, timed the ball nicely, used his feet and wrists to bring up his sixth IPL fifty this season. He reached his mark in 32 balls, before slamming another 40 in his next 15 balls. He cracked seven fours and six maximums.

Patidar, who was also given two lives, provided the early momentum as he slammed six maximums and three fours during his 23-ball 55.

After Patidar’s dismissal, Kohli and Green continued the onslaught to take RCB past the 200-mark. Green hit five fours and a six before being caught in the final ball as RCB scored 77 in last five overs.

Pacer Vidhwath Kaverappa (2/36) picked up two wickets in the powerplay on his IPL debut but his figures could have been much better had the fielders not dropped three catches off his bowling.

Kohli was dropped in the third ball but Kaverappa dismissed Faf du Plessis (9) and removed Will Jacks (12) but PBKS couldn’t create pressure as Sam Curran (1/50) and Harshal Patel (3/38) leaked runs.

Patel, who had dropped Patidar, conceded three boundaries in his first over as RCB scored 56 in the powerplay.

It started raining sixes thereafter as Kohli and Patidar slammed a maximum each to spoil Kaverappa’s bowling figures.

Patidar then creamed spinner Rahul Chahar for three mighty maximums before depositing Arshdeep and Sam Curran for two more sixes, the last one bringing up his fifty in 21 balls.

With Patidar on fire, RCB crossed 100 in the ninth over. Curran, however, got rid of Patidar in the 10th over, when rain halted play for a brief while.

After resumption, Kohli completed his fifty and hit Livingstone for two fours.

Green brought up the 150 with a four off Patel. Kohli then went berserk as he slog swept Livingstone for a six, while Curran was deposited over mid-wicket for a 94-metre maximum. He sent one over long-on for another maximum.

Dinesh Karthik (18) played a cameo before Patel claimed three wickets in last over.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star batter Virat Kohli has been piling up runs in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), despite criticism over his strike-rate. The former RCB captain is second in scoring charts with 500 runs in 10 matches, only nine runs behind current Orange Cap holder Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, his knocks have been often overshadowed by his debatable strike-rate. Amid criticism, Kohli has found the backing of former India cricketers Irfan Pathan and Mohammad Kaif.

Irfan and Kaif slammed his critics for showing double standards with the interesting example of SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter Travis Head.

For the unversed, Head has been in sensational form in the IPL himself. The Australian opener has scored 396 runs in nine matches, striking at over 194.

However, during SRH’s game against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Thursday, even Head struggled to time the ball. At one point, he was batting on 25 off as many deliveries, and ended up scoring 58 off 44 balls with a strike-rate of 131.8.

Speaking on Head’s knock, Irfan and Kaif suggested that if Kohli had played a similar knock, everyone would have been talking about his strike rate for days.

“According to his ability, you have never seen him play like this. No matter what you say that there was good bowling and everything, but every cricketer should be treated equally,” Irfan said on Star Sports.

Kaif echoed his sentiments, and added: “You are right, if this was Virat Kohli, I can guarantee that people would have said only 58 runs in 44 balls? What is this? They would say it is low and there would have debates about his strike rate. But I believe that this was a good innings by Head.”

Irfan further explained how Kohli has been carrying RCB with his batting, especially with the franchise languishing at the bottom of the points table.

“But if there was Virat Kohli instead, people would have stuck to the strike rate but here we are talking about taking responsibility for team’s victory, so please treat everyone equally,” Irfan added.

Kohli had also addressed the debate surrounding his strike-rate. He had taken a swipe at his critics after the match against Gujarat Titans and said: “All the people who talk about [my] strike rate and me not playing spin well are the ones who love to talk about these things. But for me, it is just about winning the game. There’s a reason why you do it for 15 years. Because you do this day in and day out and won games for your team,” said Kohli after the Gujarat Titans game.

“I am not sure if you haven’t been in that situation, to sit and speak about the game from the box. I don’t think it is the same thing. I am just doing my job. People can talk about their own ideas and assumption on the game (sic),” he added.

Kohli will have the chance to reclaim the Orange Cap when RCB take on GT on Saturday.

Harshit Rana bowl the debatable delivery to Virat Kohli© Twitter

Was it a no ball or legal delivery? That seems to be the biggest debate since Virat Kohli‘s debatable dismissal during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday. The point of contention is that whether the full toss by Harshit Rana was above Virat Kohli’s waist height or not. Kohli was furious after he was caught and bowled by Rana on that delivery and later was fined 50 per cent of his match fees for showing dissent on umpire’s decision.

Former Indian cricket team star Mohammad Kaif, who has played 125 ODIs and 13 Tests, said in a video that Harshit Rana should have apologised for the beamer (a delivery which is aimed at the body of the batter).

“You can dismiss a batter in 10 different ways with a single ball and with six deliveries you have 60 ways to get a batter out. There are only 10 ways to get a batter out but now Virat Kohli has been dismissed by a beamer which is a new one,” said Kaif in the video that he posted.

“Giving Virat Kohli out off a beamer is a terrible decision because how can you control a ball that is coming at you in that trajectory. That is not legal. The ball which slipped out of Harshit Rana’s hand, came at a particular trajectory and no ball should have been given, Harshit Rana should have apologised and said sorry to Kohli for the ball slipping out of his hands. Instead, Kohli was given out, this is a terrible decision.

The batter always looks down at where the ball is supposed to be pitching, no one can be ready for a delivery like that. It was a bad decision to give Virat Kohli out,” he said.

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif slammed the umpire’s decision to deem Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Virat Kohli out against Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Kohli was in blistering form as he smacked two towering sixes in his knock of 18 off 7 balls during RCB’s chase of 223. He was caught and bowled following a full toss from Harshit Rana which initially appeared to be a beamer in the third over at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Kaif gave his take on the decision and stated that the ball was an “unplayable beamer” and it was “poor umpiring” while giving a reference to the decision which fell in favour of MS Dhoni during the Chennai Super Kings clash against Lucknow Super Giants when the ball passed under Dhoni’s bat but the delivery pitched outside the line.

“Clear unplayable beamer gets Kohli out and a ball that passed under Dhoni’s bat declared wide. Cameras, replays, technology but still such mistakes being made. Poor umpiring,” Kaif wrote on X.

Not amused after being given out by the on-field umpires, RCB’s marquee batter referred the decision to the third umpire.

After going over the replays, the third umpire upheld the on-field decision, giving him out. Furious at being adjudged out, Virat was seen remonstrating on the field and started walking off in anger as the Knights rejoiced.

Before walking back in a huff, Virat was seen charging at one of the on-field umpires and contesting his dismissal. As he stormed back to the pavilion, the batter was seen smashing his willow on the ground and hitting a trash can with his gloves, causing it to tumble.

After Kohli’s dismissal, RCB lost skipper Faf Du Plessis (7) early as well while chasing 223. A 102-run partnership between Will Jacks (55 in 32 balls, with four boundaries and five sixes) and Rajat Patidar (52 in 23 balls, with three fours and five sixes) helped RCB bounce back. But their efforts weren’t enough to seal off the game for RCB.
