Stalwart Virat Kohli went level with former captain and batting maestro Mohammad Azharuddin for the record of completing most catches as a fielder for India in the ODI format. Virat achieved the feat during India’s Champions Trophy opening clash against Bangladesh in Dubai on Thursday. Virat completed two catches to take his tally to 156 in the ODIs, the joint-highest by an Indian as a fielder, joining Azharuddin at the top. However, Virat achieved the feat in 298 matches, 36 games less Azharuddin (334).

Virat needs to take one more catch in the format to go past Azharuddin and script the record solely to his name. With the former skippers occupying the top spot, ‘Master Blaster’ Sachin Tendulkar comes next in the list with 140 catches in the ODIs. The ‘Wall’ Rahul Dravid is next in line with 124 catches, followed by Suresh Raina with a tally of 102.

The 36-year-old didn’t have to wait much to see the first opportunity come flying his way. On the fourth ball of the second over, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto chased down Harshit Rana‘s fullish delivery.

He chased it successfully but failed to keep his cover drive in contact with the ground. Virat, stationed at a shortish cover point, jumped in the air and completed a catch above his head.

Virat had to wait for the second chance to come his way. In the 43rd over, Mohammed Shami outfoxed Jaker Ali by operating on the wider side of the pitch. Jaker couldn’t resist and backed himself to clear the boundary rope. He caught the ball with the toe end of his bat and skied it in the air. With eyes glued on the ball, Virat pouched the ball clean to go level with Azharuddin.

Along with Virat, Shami etched his name in the history book after completing 200 ODI wickets. Shami bowled his full quota of 10 overs and looked in a nice rhythm. He ended his spell with mouth-watering figures of 5/53 in 10 overs, dismissing Soumya Sarkar, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Jaker Ali, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Taskin Ahmed.

Former Pakistan batter Basit Ali has recalled ex-India captain Mohammad Azharuddin‘s words praising Tilak Varma, following the youngster’s heroics in the second T20I against England on Saturday. Tilak is thriving in his new role as India’s designated no. 3 in T20I. On Saturday, he hit a brilliant 55-ball 72 not out, laced with four boundaries and five sixes, to help India chase down 166 with two wickets and four balls to spare. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit recalled how Azharuddin spoke highly about Tilak, who had not made his India debut back then.

“When I interviewed Mohammad Azharuddin, he took the name of Tilak Varma when he was nothing, playing only in IPL. He said, ‘There is Tilak Varma, watch him [play]’ and now it’s come true,” Basit said on his YouTube channel.

Sharing his views on Tilak’s performances at no. 3, Basit credit India head coach Gautam Gambhir for using the left-right combination wisely.

“Duniya ek numbari to Tilak Varma teen nambari (If the World No.1, then Tilak Varma is No. 3.) You’ll ask what did I say? It’s because he is performing back-to-back since he’s come at No. 3. You saw [in the match], that Gautam used the left-right combination [well]. (Varma) Played well, what a match,” he added.

Since being promoted to no. 3 during the tour of South Africa last year, Tilak smashed two consecutive centuries against the Proteas.

After his knock against England in Chennai, Tilak admitted that India captain Suryakumar Yadav giving him the number three position has been the turning point of his batting career in the shortest format.

His stats as a number three batter now read as 419 runs in 11 innings with an average of 69.83 and strike-rate of 171.02.

“When Surya bhai gave me that No.3 position in South Africa, it was a turning point for me. So, I would like to congratulate and thank Surya bhai for that. As for this series, there is a left-right combination going on, so wherever I am needed, I am there. The flexibility is good, and I am adapting well to it. I am always ready,” said Tilak.

Mr Azharuddin has been an MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad.

New Delhi/Hyderabad:

Former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin, late folk singer Gaddar’s daughter GV Vennela and ex-MPs Madhu Yashki Goud, Ponnam Prabhakar and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy were among the prominent names in the second list of 45 candidates announced by the Congress on Friday for the November 30 Telangana assembly polls.

Komatireddy Raj Gopal Reddy, who quit the BJP on Wednesday and rejoined the Congress today has been fielded from Munugode which he had represented earlier.

Mr Reddy’s resignation from Congress to join the BJP led to a bypoll in Munugode last year which he had lost.

Mr Azharuddin, who had represented Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh in Lok Sabha earlier, will contest from the posh Jubilee Hills constituency in Hyderabad.

Former MPs Madhu Yaskhi Goud and Ponnam Prabhakar would be contesting from LB Nagar in Hyderabad and Husnabad in Siddipet district respectively, while Gaddar’s daughter Vennela would be making her electoral debut in Secunderabad Cantt-SC constituency.

Former minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, who had recently quit the ruling BRS and joined the Congress, will contest from Khammam.

Former MP Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, who had also resigned from BRS and joined the Congress, has been fielded from Palair.

With this, the party has so far declared 100 candidates for the Telangana assembly polls.

The state has 119 assembly constituencies.

Earlier in the day, the Congress leadership deliberated upon the names of candidates for the Telangana assembly polls at a crucial meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee in Delhi.

Chaired by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the meeting was attended by former party chief Sonia Gandhi, besides members of the committee and Telangana leaders, including PCC chief A Revanth Reddy. The Congress had also held a meeting of the CEC for Telangana on Wednesday.

The Congress is seeking to replace the BRS government in the state.

In the earlier list, the party fielded Pradesh Congress chief Anumula Revanth Reddy from Kodangal assembly seat while CLP leader Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu from Madhira-SC seat.

Revanth Reddy is currently the sitting Lok Sabha MP from Malkajgiri parliamentary constituency.
