The United States of America on Tuesday successfully defended the lowest-ever total of 122 in a non-curtailed ODI match to beat Oman by 57 runs in a their Cricket World Cup League 2 match. It is the lowest successfully defended totals in men’s ODIs and excluding matches with a revised target or reduced overs. In conditions heavily favouring spin, it was the metronomic work of Nosthush Kenjige that led the American charge, with the left-arm spinner claiming 5/11 from 7.3 overs to sink the hosts for just 65.

According to ESOPN Cricinfo, the previous lowest total defended in a full ODI was India’s 125 against Pakistan in 1985. India won the game by 38 runs in Sharjah.

Milind Kumar’s off-spin (2/17) claimed the key wicket of Oman captain Jatinder Singh (7) and the men from the Sultanate showed little resolve in their chase.

Harmeet Singh (1/25) and Yasir Mohammed’s 2/10 complimented Kenjige, who wrapped up proceedings by trapping No 11 Siddharth Bukkapatnam (0).

The score of 65 all-out is also Oman’s lowest in the men’s international format.

While the surface at the Oman Cricket Academy has shown more zip in previous years, most notably at the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup, the recent ODI tri-series which forms part of Cricket World Cup 2027 qualification has seen conditions suit slower bowlers.

Not a single over of pace was bowled in the match, with Oman’s five-pronged spin attack matched by USA’s Milind Kumar, Harmeet Singh, Yasir Mohammad and Kenjige.

Electing to bowl in the hope of emulating their spin success against Namibia two days prior, the hosts stifled Monank Patel’s side, with the skipper (0) being one of the five batters to fall inside the first 13 overs.

Aaron Jones (16) and Sanjay Krishnamurthi (16) fought in spite of the elements, though it was Milind (47*) on a solo mission, hitting six boundaries to move the score past three figures.

The Americans lasted just 35.3 overs with Shakeel Ahmad’s 3/20, the best for the Omanis, though the effort would be usurped by their opposition’s spin quartet.

India-born USA cricketer Milind Kumar has added a rather unique record to his name. He has become the first-ever batter in ODI cricket history to finish an innings with a score of 155. Playing for USA against UAE, Milind smashed 155 off 110 balls, helping him register this strange record. Till date, there have been 63 separate instances of a player scoring between 150 and 159 in an ODI innings, but Milind’s knock is the first that has ended at exactly 155.

In the 53-year history of ODI cricket, across 4,773 ODIs, since the first-ever ODI was played in 1971, no other player has ever managed to do so.

Milind is no slouch with the bat. He averages nearly 50 in first-class cricket, most of which he played in the competitive Indian domestic scene. Once a player for Delhi and Sikkim in the Ranji Trophy, he ended the 2018-19 Ranji season as the highest run-scorer (1331). Milind has even been a part of two different IPL franchises, being a part of the Delhi Daredevils 9DD) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

The 33-year-old batter was also a part of the USA squad that created stunned everyone during the 2024 T20 World Cup by reaching the Super 8s.

Milind played his knock of 155 in the ICC Cricket World Cup League Two stage, the second-level in the path to qualification for the Cricket World Cup. His knock helped USA to a massive score of 339/4 in 50 overs. UAE fell short in response by 136 runs.

USA currently sit second in the ICC CWC League Two table, ahead of more experienced nations like Netherlands and Scotland. They are only two points behind league leaders Canada, despite playing three games less.

With 14 teams in total hunting for a spot in the 2027 Cricket World Cup, USA have an outside chance of making the main stage.

Former Delhi batter and 2018-19 Ranji Trophy top run-getter Milind Kumar found a place in the United States of America squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, starting June 1. The USA, a co-host of the event alongside the West Indies, announced its 15-member squad to be led by Gujarat-born Monank Patel. Right-handed batter Milind, who scored 1331 runs in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season, had before that played seven seasons for Delhi and then migrated to the USA in search of better opportunities.

Milind, a Delhi-born cricketer, played for the state, Sikkim and Tripura in the Indian domestic before migrating to the US.

The 33-year-old batter also played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

During the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, he finished as the highest run-scorer for the season playing for Sikkim before making his cricketing debut in the US in 2021 with The Philadelphians in the Minor Cricket League.

Former Mumbai left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh has also made it to the side.

The 31-year-old Mumbai-born featured for the Indian team during the 2012 U-19 World Cup, besides playing for Rajasthan Royals in 2013 and state cricket for Tripura.

He made his US cricketing debut in 2021, leading Seattle Thunderbolts in the Minor League Cricket.

Saurabh Nethravalkar, another Mumbai-born pacer, played in the 2010 U19 World Cup, the batch that saw stars like KL Rahul, Jaydev Unadkat and Mayank Agarwal going on to represent the senior Indian team.

However, a couple of renowned Indians and members of the 2012 U-19 World Cup-winning team — Unmukt Chand (skipper) and Smit Patel (wicketkeeper) — failed to find a spot in the squad.

Another well-known face in the squad is Corey Anderson, a former New Zealand all-rounder who represented the Black Caps in the 2015 ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cups in 2014 and 2016.

He moved to the US in 2023 and made his debut with the side last month in a T20I against Canada.

Pakistan-born pacer Ali Khan is also an inclusion in the squad, who was recruited by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2020.

USA will start their campaign against neighbours Canada here on the opening day, having also been clubbed alongside India, Pakistan and Ireland in Group A.

USA squad for T20 World Cup: Monank Patel (c & wk), Aaron Jones (vc), Andries Gous, Corey Anderson, Ali Khan, Harmeet Singh, Jessy Singh, Milind Kumar, Nisarg Patel, Nitish Kumar, Noshtush Kenjige, Saurabh Netravalkar, Shadley Van Schalkwyk, Steven Taylor and Shayan Jahangir.
