A father and son pleaded guilty in a German court Tuesday over a plot to blackmail the family of Michael Schumacher by threatening to release images of the Formula One legend. The men from Wuppertal in western Germany made the admission at the opening of their trial in the city, a court spokeswoman said.  The men, identified only as Yilmaz T. and Daniel L., allegedly threatened to release private photos and videos of Schumacher and demanded 15 million euros ($15.7 million) from his family. These purportedly included images of the seven-time Formula One champion before and after a 2013 skiing accident, which left him with a serious brain injury.

Schumacher, 55, has not been seen in public since.

A third man, who is accused of supplying the photos to the other two defendants, also went on trial for his alleged part in the plot but made no admission of guilt.

The man, identified as Markus F. from the western German town of Wuelfrath, worked as a security guard at the Schumacher family residence in Switzerland until 2021.

Prosecutors accuse the suspect of selling images of Schumacher, acquired during his work, to the father and son for a “five-figure” sum.

According to prosecutors, Yilmaz T. rang an employee of the Schumacher family several times in June this year to demand money.

The employee demanded proof of the images, which was delivered from a new email address, said to have been set up by the suspected blackmailer’s son.

The court has scheduled a total of five hearings until mid-February.

Mick Schumacher, son of Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher, opened up about the challenges and inspirations that have defined his racing career. Mick, who has been following in his legendary father’s footsteps, revealed how he had to “find his own feet” in Formula 1 after his father’s skiing accident curtailed the guidance and support he once had.

Michael Schumacher, the seven-time Formula 1 champion, suffered life-altering injuries in a tragic skiing accident in December 2013 when Mick was just 14. The accident changed their lives, leaving Mick to navigate much of his professional racing journey independently. But even now, years later, Mick follows lessons his father instilled, often recalling both his father’s competitive spirit and his challenging guidance.

“I was a crazy kid – everything my dad did, I did,” Mick said in the latest insights shared through Matt Whyman’s new book, Inside Mercedes F1.

“My dad was always very open to me trying out whatever I wanted to do, and racing is all I wanted to do, because I enjoyed it the most.”

Mick described the balance his father struck between encouragement and demanding excellence, recounting a memorable karting race where he attempted a bold late brake to save time. Michael’s response wasn’t just praise, but a challenge. “’Yes, but you should have braked like that in every corner!’ Such moments, Mick said, taught him the importance of commitment and precision in racing. Whenever he felt like I was not taking it seriously, he would say, ‘Mick, would you rather go and play football with your friends?’ If so, we do not need to do all of this. I insisted that I wanted to race, and he said, ‘Okay, then let’s do it properly.’”

However, everything changed in 2013, the year before Mick entered Formula classes. With his father no longer able to guide him through the critical transition from karting to more competitive racing, Mick faced new challenges. “Then my dad had his accident,” he shared. “I started racing in the Formula classes the year after, and from that point onwards, I had to find my own feet.”

Mick’s talent and resilience eventually led him to F1, where he joined the Haas team in 2021. He made his F1 debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix, finishing 16th. Over two seasons, Mick gained invaluable experience but found himself navigating the tough realities of the sport alone.

After his stint with Haas, he became a reserve driver for Mercedes, while simultaneously pursuing opportunities in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine. He continues to use his father’s teachings, drawing from the technical insights and resilience he learned from Michael.

Despite his drive and achievements, Mick’s hopes of a 2024 return to F1 were recently dashed when Sauber, now owned by Audi, selected 18-year-old Gabriel Bortoleto over him.

After his life-threatening skiing accident in 2013, Formula One legend Michael Schumacher’s life has changed immeasurably over the years. Since then, details about his health condition have been kept confidential. It has been reported in the past that Schumacher has been residing in Switzerland. However, European media recently reported that Schumacher made his first public appearance in over a decade, having attended the wedding of his daughter Gina this week.

The ceremony took place at a villa in Mallorca, Spain. The report also added that the guests were not allowed to take pictures of the venue.

Elisabetta Gregoraci, wife of current Alpine F1 team supervisor Flavio Briatore, has made a heartbreaking revelation about how Schumacher communicates.

“Michael doesn’t speak, he communicates with his eyes. Only three people can visit him and I know who they are. They moved to Spain and his wife has set up a hospital in that house,” Gregoraci said on Italian reality TV show ‘Grande Fratello’, as quoted by Express.co.uk.

According to reports in local media, Schumacher’s wife Corinna bought the luxury villa from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

A few months ago, former world champion Sebastian Vettel, who is close to Schumacher and his family, recently revealed that the F1 legend “is not doing well”.

Schumacher’s lawyer, Felix Damm, however, has revealed that the former F1 driver’s family has decided not to make his final health report public due to privacy concerns.

“It was always about protecting private things. We considered whether a final report about Michael’s health could be the right way to do this,” Damm told German media outlet LTO, as quoted by SI.com.

Damm also stated that Schumacher’s family would have come under pressure from the media to release timely health updates, had they released the final health report.

“But that wouldn’t have been the end of it and there would have had to be constantly updated ‘water level reports’ and it would not have been up to the family when the media interest in the story stopped.”

“They [the media] could pick up on such a report again and again and as ‘and what does it look like now?’ one, two, three months or years after the message,” he added. “If we then wanted to take action against this reporting, we would have to deal with the argument of voluntary self-disclosure,” he added.

Michael Schumacher is one F1 driver who has transcended the sport. The seven-time F1 world champion met with a life-threatening skiing accident in 2013 at the French Alps. Since then little has been known about his health condition. According to reports, the 54-year-old has been residing privately in Switzerland, and details about his health have been kept confidential. However, fresh reports in European media suggest that the F1 great was ‘seen in public’ first time since the accident for his daughter Gina’s wedding with her boyfriend Iain Bethke at the family’s luxury villa in Mallorca, Spain.

Metro.co.uk reported that “the wedding is believed to be the first time Michael has been allowed in public since his accident”. The report was titled “Michael Schumacher ‘seen in public for first time in 11 years'”

German publication BILD also said that it was “quite possible. Even very likely” for Schumacher to be present at the ceremony though not in the garden where people apart from ‘close guests’ were present.

The guests were reportedly asked to submit their phones so that photos may not be leaked of the event, according to multiple reports.

The family of German former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher said Thursday they won a legal action against a tabloid magazine which printed a fake AI interview with the 55-year-old. Magazine ‘Die Aktuelle’ had in April 2023 claimed it had an interview with the motorsport legend — the first since he suffered a serious brain injury in a 2013 skiing accident in the French Alps. But the article headlined “Michael Schumacher, the first interview” in fact contained quotes which had been generated by artificial intelligence.  A spokesperson for the Schumacher family confirmed to AFP on Thursday that the legal action was “successful”, but declined to comment any further.

German tabloid Bild reported on Thursday that the family was awarded 200,000 euros ($220,000) in compensation, an amount the family spokesperson did not confirm.

The publisher of the magazine had previously made a public apology to Schumacher and his family.

Anne Hoffmann, the editor in chief of Die Aktuelle, was fired as a result of the article.

Germany’s press council (DP) criticised the interview, saying the “serious misleading of the readership is likely to damage the credibility of the media.”

Schumacher has not been seen in public since suffering the injury and has been in care at the family home in Switzerland since.

The German, who retired in 2012, won seven Formula One driver’s championships, the equal best mark which he shares with Britain’s Lewis Hamilton.
