Young Australia opener Sam Konstas made a remarkable start to his Test career, smashing a fifty on debut in the first innings of the 4th Test against India in Melbourne. He hit a quickfire 60 off just 65 balls, looking comfortable while taking on the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. He became a fan favourite at the MCG after clashing with star India batter Virat Kohli, who had shoulder barged him during his knock in the first innings. He was also seen making gestures after Kohli and Bumrah were dismissed in the second innings.

However, his actions came back to haunt him, according to former Australia batter Michael Hussey. Bumrah cleaned him with a ripper in the second innings when he was batting on 8, and replicated the same celebration made by Konstas in the first innings.

While referring to Konstas’ theatrics in the first innings, Hussey suggested that certain reactions from players always come back to bite them back at some point.

“It always comes back to bite you at some stage. I wonder if Sam Konstas is back in the dressing rooms thinking, ‘I wish I charged him’. It just makes the battle between the two nations all the more spicy,” Hussey said on Fox Sports.

“You don’t see a lot of theatrics from Bumrah, but when Sam Konstas was dismissed, he thought, ‘Yep, I’m here as well,” he added.

Meanwhile, Australia stubbornly battled back to reach 228-9 at the close of play on Day 4, leading by 333 runs in an absorbing fourth Test.

Up by 105 runs on the first innings, Australia were rocked by losing four wickets for 11 midway through the second session to slump to 91-6.

Bumrah scythed through the middle order on day four in Melbourne to record figures of 4-56 off 24 overs and hand India an outside chance of victory in a match the home side have mostly dominated.

However, India’s hopes were diminished by a stubborn, unbeaten final-wicket stand of 55 from 17.5 overs.

Nathan Lyon was at the crease on 41 while number 11 Scott Boland had seen off 65 balls to be 10 not out at the close.

Former Australia batter Mark Waugh and Mike Hussey had contrasting takes on India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant‘s shot selection, which led to his dismissal on Day 3 of the ongoing Boxing-Day Test. Pant’s innings of 28 ended when he over-balanced while attempting a ramp shot off Scott Boland‘s delivery, only to be caught by Nathan Lyon at third man. It was a big moment in the match as Pant and Ravindra Jadeja had put on a decent partnership following India’s late collapse on Day 2.

Pant was criticised for his shot selection by fans and experts, including Australia great Waugh, who questioned his approach especially with his team in a precarious position.

“That’s an awful shot when his team needed him to make an innings. I get it he’s an aggressive player and I want to see him be aggressive but you’ve still got to have some boundaries with the shots you play. There’s got to be a level of restraint and percentages in your favour and that shot falling down,” the former Australia batter said on Fox Sports.

On the contrary, Hussey sympathised with Pant over his shot selection and argued that he won’t change the way how the aggressive batter’s approaches his innings.

It is a difficult situation because it’s not a great shot and it’s not a great look, especially for an Indian team looking to fight hard. But you don’t want to put doubt in his mind, he’s at his best when he’s clear and free and playing his natural way. I’d be disappointed with the shot, I’m sure he’d be disappointed with the shot but I don’t want him to change the way he plays,” Hussey replied.

Waugh, however, sledged Hussey by reminding him that: “That’s why you’re not head coach, just assistant coach”.

“It’s a hard one though isn’t it because that’s the way he likes to play, he likes to play these crazy shots and if you start putting too much doubt in his mind then it might just confuse him more. It is a poor shot, don’t get me wrong,” Hussey added.

Former Australia cricketer Michael Hussey shared his experience the first time he faced a young Jasprit Bumrah in the Mumbai Indians nets during his brief stint with the franchise in 2014 and Hussey revealed that he couldn’t have foreseen the meteoric rise of the wiry pacer, but he wasn’t entirely surprised either. The former Australian batting maestro reflected on his initial encounter with Bumrah, the doubts surrounding his unconventional bowling style, and the stern advice he offered to the young pacer early in his career.

“I actually played a year with him in the IPL when I was with the Mumbai Indians,” Hussey told Willow Talk. “He was just a young kid coming through. I remember facing him in the nets and literally couldn’t get bat on the ball. I felt like I was using a toothpick.”

The Aussie great was left awestruck by Bumrah’s unique action and sharp pace.

“I couldn’t even see the ball, let alone pick it coming out of his hand. His action is so different, so deceptive. My first impression? I honestly didn’t think he’d even make it to the crease. His run-up was staggered and awkward. I remember thinking, ‘Who is this guy?’ And then suddenly, woof—the ball whistles past my eyebrows at 145kph!”

At the time, Bumrah was seen as a white-ball specialist with limited potential for Test cricket. Hussey recalled the conversations swirling in Indian cricket circles back then.

“In India, there was so much scepticism. People said his action and run-up would be too hard on his body, that he wouldn’t last in Test cricket,” Hussey said. “They thought he was made for white-ball cricket alone. But even back then, I could see his skills and ability. I knew that if he had the desire to play Test cricket, he could succeed.”

Hussey was full of admiration for Bumrah’s achievements in the longest format of the game. “Isn’t he doing it bloody well at the moment? It’s just phenomenal to see how he’s grown.”

Hussey also shared an anecdote about a game-changing moment early in Bumrah’s IPL career. It was a match between the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014 when Bumrah dismissed the legendary AB de Villiers.

“He burst onto the scene in the IPL and bowled brilliantly. I remember one game where he got AB de Villiers out. Obviously, AB is one of the greatest, and Bumrah gave him a big send-off. AB wasn’t happy,” Hussey recalled.

The send-off didn’t sit well with Hussey either. After the game, the veteran took the young bowler aside for a word of advice.

“I told him, ‘Mate, you don’t need to do that. You have so much skill and talent. Just getting the wicket is the biggest statement you can make. If you want respect in the game and from your peers, you don’t need send-offs.’”

Hussey admitted it was an uncharacteristic moment for Bumrah, who he described as one of the most humble and down-to-earth cricketers he’s met.

“He’s such a great guy. That send-off was out of character for him. He’s always smiling, always calm, and consistent in his behaviour. He doesn’t get too emotional. It’s one of the reasons he’s such a phenomenal bowler and such a joy to watch.”

Looking back, Hussey marvelled at how far Bumrah had come since those early days. “He’s unbelievable. Watching him grow into one of the best bowlers in the world has been incredible. From a kid in the nets who terrified us to one of the most respected cricketers globally, it’s been a joy to witness.”

The Australian 19-year-old opener Sam Konstas gears up for a potential Test debut in the iconic Boxing Day Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. His call-up, hailed as an “exciting” opportunity by cricket legend Mike Hussey, comes at the expense of Nathan McSweeney, who has been dropped after just three Tests—a decision that has sparked mixed reactions from players and pundits alike. McSweeney’s omission follows a string of underwhelming performances since his debut last month, where he failed to surpass 10 runs in five out of six innings.

While the 25-year-old showed promise, his inability to adapt to the challenges of opening at the Test level, particularly against the moving ball, proved costly.

Head selector George Bailey admitted it was a “really hard decision” to drop McSweeney, especially since he was placed in an unfamiliar position as an opener despite not specializing in that role at the domestic level.

“I get the dream come true, and then it didn’t quite work out the way I wanted,” he told 7 News Adelaide.

“But it’s all part of it, I’ll get my head down and get back in the nets and work really hard, and hopefully be ready to go for the next opportunity. It’s the game we’re in; if you don’t take your opportunity and you’re not performing as well as you want to, your position’s never safe.

“I missed out a few times with the bat and unfortunately wasn’t able to take my opportunity, but as I said I’ll work really hard to make sure if the opportunity comes round again I’m definitely ready.”

The decision to axe McSweeney has divided opinions among Australian cricket legends. Mike Hussey expressed sympathy for the young batter, acknowledging the tough conditions for openers this summer.

“I really feel for McSweeney. I think it’s tough on him. Tough call,” Hussey said on Fox Cricket.

“I don’t know (if it was the right call). It’s a tough one on him. It’s not easy. The ball’s been moving around quite a lot for the openers. A lot of batters at the top of the order have been battling away.

“Let’s look at the other side, and it’s so exciting for a player like Sam Konstas.”

On the other hand, Michael Clarke was more critical of the selectors, arguing that McSweeney wasn’t given a fair chance to establish himself.

“This could end Nathan McSweeney’s career. They picked him, he deserved the summer. What happens if Usman Khawaja retires in two Tests? Does McSweeney come back, or does he go to the back of the queue?” Clarke questioned on his Beyond23 podcast.

The spotlight now shifts to Sam Konstas, the teenage prodigy who has been rewarded for his stellar performances across all formats. His recent form, including a composed 56-run knock for the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League, solidified his case for national selection.

Hussey, who watched Konstas’ innings live, praised the youngster’s temperament and aggression.

“I was very impressed. It was the first time I’d seen him live,” Hussey said of Konstas’ half-century for the Thunder.

“What an occasion to make your Test debut. Boxing Day Test against India, opening the batting, and he’s only 19 years of age. Wow. What a story,” Hussey said.

Konstas is expected to bring fresh energy and fearlessness to Australia’s struggling top order, which has faced immense challenges this summer.

Former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist believes Konstas’ fearless approach in the BBL match against the Adelaide Strikers clinched his Test call-up.

“It’s that innings that tipped it in his favour. His aggression, his desire to score—it’s been horribly challenging for that Australian top order, and I think he’s ready to take it on,” Gilchrist said on Fox Cricket.

Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir took a jibe at Australia great Ricky Ponting over his criticism of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Ponting was critical of the duo following India’s Test series defeat against New Zealand at home. Ponting went on to say that Kohli’s form was a concern – a comment that did not go down well with Gambhir who asked him to turn his attention to Australian cricket. While reacting on the entire incident on FOX Sports, former Australia cricketer Mike Hussey said that the first Test between India and Australia will show who is correct in their assessment but added that it is not wise to underestimate talented batters like Rohit and Virat even if they are not in the best of forms.

“We will find out in the first Test match where they are at, mentally and from a skill perspective as well. They will be hurt by this, India. They have got a lot of crowd pullers and quality. We just heard from Gambhir talking about Rohit and Kohli not making runs. The silliest thing you can do is to write off champion players. We have seen it so many times in the past – they come under criticism, but they come out and perform really well. So I’m backing them to perform well in Australia. They are proud Indians and proud Test players. But I still feel Australia will start favourites,” he said.

Gambhir fired a shot back at Ricky Ponting for questioning Virat Kohli’s form and place in Indian team, saying the Australian legend should only be concerned about cricket in his country.

“What does Ponting have to do with Indian cricket? I think he should think about Australian cricket. More importantly, I have got no concerns whatsoever for Virat and Rohit,” Gambhir said during an interaction with media before leaving for Australia.

Ahead of the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy, former cricketer Michael Hussey backed star India batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and said that one cannot write off champion players like them. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy will kick off from November 22 in Perth. Adelaide and Brisbane will host the second and third Test matches of the series, respectively. The iconic Boxing Day Test will be played in Melbourne. The final and fifth Test of the series will take place in Sydney from January 3.

Speaking on Fox Sports, Hussey said Aussies will find out where India stand in terms of “mentally and from a skill perspective” only after the first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He added that India have got many players who are crowd-pullers.

“We will find out in the first Test match where they are at, mentally and from a skill perspective as well. They will be hurt by this, India. They have got a lot of crowd pullers and quality. We just heard from Gambhir talking about Rohit and Kohli not making runs. The silliest thing you can do is to write off champion players,” Hussey said.

He added Rohit and Virat come under criticism but they always perform.

“We have seen it so many times in the past – they come under criticism, but they come out and perform really well. So I’m backing them to perform well in Australia. They are proud Indians and proud Test players. But I still feel Australia will start favourites,” he added.

Earlier on Monday, while addressing the media before departing for Australia for the BGT series, India head coach Gautam Gambhir responded to questions regarding the form of Kohli and Rohit. Terming Ponting’s opinions on Indian cricket ‘irrelevant’, the former batter affirmed that both the big guns have a lot of passion and hunger for the team.

“Not at all…Ricky Ponting should think about Australian cricket, what concerns he has for Indian cricket? Virat and Rohit are incredibly tough men. They’ve achieved a lot for Indian cricket and they will continue to achieve a lot,” Gambhir said on Monday.

“They still work really hard. They’re still passionate. They still want to achieve a lot more and that is something which is very important. The hunger in that dressing room is incredibly important for me and for the entire group of people as well in that dressing room. I feel there’s a lot of hunger, especially after what has happened in the last series,” he added.

So far in 2024, both Kohli and Rohit have struggled to find their best form, attracting scrutiny following India’s recent 0-3 series loss against New Zealand. Rohit has accumulated 588 runs from 11 matches this year, averaging 29.40 with two centuries and two fifties. Meanwhile, Kohli has managed just 250 runs from six matches (12 innings), averaging 22.72 with just one half-century.

Their form is a significant concern as India prepares to face Australia, needing to win the series 4-1 to secure their spot in the World Test Championship Final (WTC). The performance of Kohli and Rohit will be crucial for India’s chances to progress to their third consecutive WTC final.

As IPL 2024 is nearing its conclusion, the talk about MS Dhoni‘s retirement plans is also picking pace once again. Speculations were rife last year that Dhoni would call time on his IPL career but the then Chennai Super Kings captain, instead, expressed desire to continue playing for the side. While reacting to a question regarding the retirement plans of Dhoni, former CSK batter and its current batting coach Michael Hussey said that he himself has no idea about it. Hussey gave the statement while speaking to Around The Wicket podcast. He added that Dhoni likes to “build the drama a little bit as well”.

When asked if Dhoni would be back next year, Hussey said, “Your guess is as good as mine at this stage.

“He keeps his cards very, very close to his chest. We are hoping he does keep going.

“He is still batting so well. He does prepare well – he gets into the camp very early and hits a lot of balls. He has been in good touch all season really.”

Dhoni has been coming lower down the order to bat this season as he is suffering from a knee issue.

“I guess we just got to try to manage him from the body side of things. He had a knee surgery after the last season. So he has been managing that from the initial stage of the tournament,” said Hussey.

“From a personal point of view, I hope he keeps going for another couple of years. But we will just have to wait and see. He is the only one who will make that call. And he likes to sort of build the drama a little bit as well. So I wouldn’t expect a decision anytime soon,” he added.

CSK are still alive in the race to IPL 2024 playoffs. Their last league match is against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 18.

Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey on Sunday felt that the decision to give Ravindra Jadeja out for obstructing the field could have gone either way. Jadeja became the third batter in IPL history to be adjudged out for obstructing the field after a miscommunication with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad during their chase against Rajasthan Royals. As Jadeja refused to go for a second run though the all-rounder was halfway down the pitch, the third man hurled the ball to wicketkeeper Sanju Samson, who aimed the ball at the bowler’s end. The throw hit Jadeja, RR appealed, and the third umpire was convinced that Jadeja knew in which direction the ball was heading.

“Didn’t look closely at it. He did try to turn around, so he changed his angle a little bit. But he didn’t change his angle while running straight,” Hussey told reporters during the post-match interaction.

“I can see both sides of the story. I can understand the umpire making the decision. The rule says you cannot change your line, so maybe, it was a fair call.”

The contest was low-scoring, in which the hosts prevailed by five wickets to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Commenting on the wicket, Hussey expressed his satisfaction as it allowed an even contest between the two sides.

“Towards the back end of the tournament, the pitches tend to get a bit slower. But I loved the game today — it was one of those close contests,” he stated.

“You needed to show some skills (on this wicket). The way the Rajasthan bowlers bowled, particularly the spinners, summed up the conditions and bowled accordingly.” There were a total of 90 dot balls during the tie (45 in each innings).

“Although the pitch was slow, it wasn’t unplayable. We’re chasing a low total and did not have to take too many risks, which resulted in so many dot balls,” he added.

One of the standout CSK performers tonight was pacer Simarjeet Singh, who finished with his best IPL figures of three for 36.

Remarking on his performance, Hussey credited the depth of talent in the team.

“That’s the exciting thing for us; we’ve got some really good talents. He hasn’t been able to get the opportunities because we have so many good bowlers up-front.

“So happy for him to get the opportunity, and he has shown how good he is. He has been training hard, and he has been excellent whenever he has got the chance.”

Had Jadeja run straight, it wouldn’t have been a problem: Sangakkara

When asked about Jadeja’s dismissal, RR’s Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara said that it is how the law works.

“The law says that if a batter changes his direction and gets in the way of the throw, it is considered an obstruction. The rule was changed for the same reason a few years back,” he articulated.

“Even if you are (running) in the middle, and if the ball hits your body, it’s considered out. Had he (Jadeja) run straight on the side where he stopped, it wouldn’t have been a problem at all.”

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are back to seeing MS Dhoni do what he does best, which is finishing the innings in style. The wicket-keeper batter, who handed over the team’s captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad at the start of the campaign, has been in scintillating form with the bat, scoring runs at an exceptional pace in the death overs. CSK’s batting coach Michael Hussey took a deep dive into Dhoni’s preparation for the IPL 2024 campaign, as well as his mindset as he looked to explain the reason behind the Thala’s rich form.

Dhoni, so far this campaign, has scored 87 runs from 5 innings, and he is yet to be dismissed. He has struck at a strike rate of 255.88, proving to be the sort of batter at death that once bowlers feared.

“He’s just in a wonderful place in his career. He’s at a place where he’s comfortable, he’s happy, and he’s enjoying his cricket,” Hussey said on the eve of CSK’s home game against the Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday.

“He’s practiced and prepared really well coming into the tournament. Of course, bowlers are coming up with different plans against him because he’s probably the greatest finisher of all time.”

Standing tall at the age of 42, Dhoni has reinvented himself as a batter. If Hussey is to be believed, the CSK stalwart will ‘continue to evolve’ even at this stage of his career. Does that mean Dhoni will continue to play beyond this season? His form and mindset certainly isn’t ruling that out.

“The bowlers need to come up with different ideas. So that’s one of the wonderful things about MS. He’ll continue to evolve and continue even at this stage of his career to make himself better and make it harder for the bowlers to bowl to him,” he added.

As far as CSK’s remaining campaign is concerned, Hussey is happy to have three consecutive games at home, which certainly boosts the team’s chances of a finish in the playoffs.

“Of course, it is going to be really important. The closer you get to the back end of the tournament, the win becomes really important. Wins are important at any time of the tournament. We got off to a pretty good start, and we have a very good record at home,” Hussey said.

“If we can play well in the next three games, it gives us a really good chance. However, it is also dangerous for us to think it is just going to happen, and it is dangerous for us to think too far ahead as well,” he asserted.

Following his side’s win over Gujarat Titans (GT) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey lauded newly-appointed skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, saying that he is a very “smart, cricket-savy” guy who is doing a great job, especially in rotating the bowlers and placing fields. The fortress at Chepauk stood untouched as the Chennai Super Kings registered a comprehensive 63-run win over the Gujarat Titans on Monday in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Speaking after the match, Hussey was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo, “I think he (Ruturaj) been fantastic. He is very well prepared. Him, Flem (head coach Stephen Fleming), MSD – they get together and talk tactics before the game. But I think the way Rutu changes the bowlers around… the fields are very good. He seems very clear. The messaging to the bowlers is very clear as well.”

“So I think he is taking to the job brilliantly at the moment; I know he has some good support around him but he is a very smart guy and a very cricket-savvy guy, you know; he understands the game well. He has got a good team to work with as well, which helps as well, but I think he has been fantastic so far,” Hussey concluded his point.

The former Australian batter was also very appreciative of all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, the Kiwi star who has provided explosive starts to his team with knocks of 37 in 15 balls and 46 in 20 balls, respectively so far. Hussey said that Rachin is trying to soak up as much knowledge as he can and the crowd gives him more energy.

“He is just trying to soak up as much knowledge as he possibly can. I think he really feeds off the crowd a bit as well. And yeah, once you have got a couple of good shots away earlier, I think his confidence grew and he believed that ‘I can perform on this stage and grow from there.’ I think he has just gone out there with a clear mind and a nice positive attitude and got off to a good start. There is not a lot to work on with these level of world-class players,” said Hussey.

One of the biggest surprises of the match was a cameo by 20-year-old Sameer Rizwi, in which he scored 14 in six balls with two sixes. A key highlight was him smoking T20 superstar Rashid Khan for a massive six on the very first ball of his IPL career and launching another big hit on his fourth ball.

Hussey said that Rizwi has natural hitting ability, especially against spinners.

“Well, he has got a lot of natural ability and natural hitting ability. We have seen it at practice, you know, especially against the spinners. I mean, he can hit a long way and he can hit the ball very cleanly,” said the coach.

“But it is still a big ask for a young player to come in for his first IPL game against arguably the best T20 bowler of all time, Rashid Khan and hit the first ball that you face for six. I mean, that is just crazy, is not it? So we are very excited for him,” he added.

Hussey said that Rizwi was excited to play in front of the packed Chepauk crowd and it was his youth and fearlessness that helped him play with freedom. The batting coach lauded the think-thank for promoting the up-and-coming batter ahead of MS Dhoni.

“He was excited to play, especially here at Chepauk, with such a great crowd. And I think that is the great thing about youth, they have no fear so they can come out and just play with that complete freedom, right? It was also a bit of a masterstroke from the think tank as well,” said the former Aussie great.

“Because I think we were all expecting MSD to come out and play those last sort of a few balls. But they realised that he [Rizvi] has got some natural power against spin and that is why they wanted to send the youngster out. And, you know, he delivered two sixes at the end, which was great for his confidence,” concluded Hussey.

Lastly, Hussey said that it has been a directive from Fleming to “keep pushing the game forward”.

“With the Impact Player rule coming in, we have basically got an extra batsman and an extra bowler throughout the game. So the batting order keeps lengthening. I think we have MSD at number eight. Which is crazy, you know, and MSD is batting really well at the moment as well,” said Hussey.

“So, because we have got so much depth in our resources there, it means the players up the order [are not] in two minds, take the positive route and they will certainly have the backing from the coaches and the captain that we would prefer you to keep trying to push the game forward. If you get out while doing so, that is fine. You will never be criticised for that. Flem’s talk is about playing fast. We want to keep playing fast,” concluded Hussey.

Coming into the match, GT put CSK to bat first. Fiery knocks from Rachin Ravindra (46 in 20 balls, with six fours and three sixes), skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (46 in 36 balls, with five fours and a six) and Dube (51 in 23 balls, with two fours and five sixes) took CSK to 206/6 in 20 overs.

Rashid Khan (2/49) and Spencer Johnson (1/35) were among the picks of the bowlers for GT.

In the run-chase, GT kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Sai Sudharsan (37 in 31 balls, with three fours), Wriddhiman Saha (21 in 17 balls, with four boundaries) and David Miller (21 in 16 balls, with three fours) tried to put up a fight, but it was just not enough. GT were restricted to 143/8 and lost by 63 runs.

Tushar Deshpande (2/21), Deepak Chahar (2/28) and Mustafizur Rahman (2/30) were the top bowlers for CSK.

Dube took home the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
